A real master piece of storytelling and all of humanity‘s emotions compressed in one adventure. Love it, can‘t recommend it enough.

This game really surprised me with its narrative and dark tone (in a good way). At first I wasn’t a fan of its art style but it grew on me. It’s about 4 hours long and there are some interesting little choices you get to make, but nothing that significantly impacts the story. One such choice floored me! Be prepared for some pretty upsetting subjects that are rarely addressed in video games. That’s what makes this game so exciting though! Expand

Welcome to Elk is a game that’s hard to quantify. Hell, it’s hard to even accurately describe. Somehow, it manages to be moving, mystifying, upsetting, intriguing, stressful, confusing, enlightening, and probably a dozen other contradictory things. Welcome to Elk doesn’t provide satisfying answers or endings. There are few, if any, likable characters. You’ll experience more trauma than you probably want to in just a few, short hours. And at the end of it all, you’re left clutching at the sharp, jagged shards of other people’s emotions, wondering… what do I do now?

Overall, Welcome to Elk! has a lot to say about the stories that make up our lives, told through charming character designs, clever writing, and a delightful soundtrack full of acoustic guitars, banjos, and other rural sounds that make spending time in Elk feel nice even when it gets sad or uncomfortable. Characters like Beth and her daughter Freddie are memorable, and moments such as the fate of Beth’s husband will likely stick with me for a long time. Frigg’s experience feels genuine and grounded even during moments of whimsy. At the end of the day, the game’s message is that sometimes a good story is just that: a good story. It really doesn’t need to be anything more.
