Aug 5, 2024Volgarr the Viking II is, quite simply, one of the best 2D action platformers on Switch, or any other platform for that matter. It improves upon the original in just about every conceivable way, introducing neat ways to ease newcomers into its relentless brutality, vastly improving the visuals, and adding a soundtrack that is destined to go down as one of the all-time greats. Minor quibbles with the UI aside, Volgarr the Viking II is an absolute must-play if you can stomach the intense difficulty.

Aug 8, 2024For those who enjoy a tough but fair platformer, Volgarr the Viking 2 is a must-play. It’s a game that demands and rewards mastery, offering a sense of accomplishment. Whether you’re a veteran of the first game or a newcomer to the series, Volgarr the Viking 2 is a thrilling adventure that will test your skills and keep you coming back for more.

Aug 13, 2024While I know some Volgarr fans are slightly put off by the lengthier stages, I think by and large Volgarr the Viking II will go down well with those who enjoyed the workmanlike challenge of the original game. It doesn’t mess with the formula too much, and its one concession to those who were frustrated by the first one has a sufficient cost to preserve the core ethos of the series. A well-made, no-nonsense action game that might just be the remedy you’re after.

Sep 5, 2024Unlike the first Völgarr (which, frankly, put me at risk of transforming into Völgarr himself, shouting “GRAH!” and wanting to throw my Switch on the floor to stomp on it) I found myself blissfully unaware of time as I played through Völgarr the Viking II over the course of several flights. Those who enjoyed the first Völgarr or other hardcore action-platformers similar to it will find Völgarr the Viking II to be a nice shot in the arm. However, without more fundamental improvements, the end result is an experience that feels more like DLC than a proper sequel.

Sep 16, 2024Volgarr The Viking II is a fun, but flawed, platformer. There’s a lack of communication that leaves one guessing as to the terms of play. It’s meant to be punishing, and the zombie option helps, but things could benefit from difficulty options or a better restart system.
