I really looked forward to this game, and I feel like there is a good game here somewhere, but it just doesn't work very well on the tiny Switch screen (in handheld mode). 70% of the screen is just black all the time due to the darkness in the caves - and seeing the subtle cues the enemies give off before they attack you can be tricky just due to the miniature size of them. I like a difficult game (loved Hollow Knight and Rain World, for instance), but it feels a bit overdone here, in my opinion. Especially when you need to fight more than one enemy at a time, you're going to struggle massively to stay alive - and while the monsters can kill you with one or two hits, you usually need to stick a good few more into them for them to die. It just feels unbalanced to me, which caused me to give up on the game relatively early (after many, many attempts). The load time it takes to give it another go doesn't do any favours for the game, and adds to the frustration. You can slow down the speed of the game to help you react quicker, but in the end, it just causes your character to slow down a whole lot too, so it doesn't really help much.

The artwork is brilliant though, the animations are nice, and there's a lovely atmosphere in the game. I'd easily give this another spin if it ever got anything like an "easy"-mode - as the way it is now, it just feels too damned punishing.

Unto the End does a great job at capturing the struggle of survival and returning home, but is the struggle worth it? There isn’t a huge epic within Unto the End. There is no dialogue and the story is simple. The actual game in length is fairly short, but the repeated deaths due to brutal combat significantly lengthens the experience, if you even finish it. The story’s depth comes from the player’s emotions as they struggle to master the gameplay mirroring the hero’s struggle to make it home. But not everyone plays a video game to feel that kind of frustration. I sure don’t and though there were aspects to like about Unto the End, the combat was overall what ruined the experience for me.

The audio-visuals are great, as is the atmosphere, but everything else is pretty terrible, especially the frustrating gameplay and technical issues. And, what’s more, the handheld mode on the Switch is basically unplayable.

I understand why someone would enjoy Unto The End. I’m sure that some players out there like being kicked in the teeth with their hands tied behind their back. That, personally, sounds like a bad time, much like Unto The End wasn’t a good time. If I wanted to play a game that didn’t function as described, I would at least play a game that kind of wanted me to like it.
