This game is really a hidden gem on the switch. If you like twists and puzzle adventures, buckle up! The surreal world is endearing and played deadpan. The spectacular and odd will become your bread and butter as you puzzle your way through a deeply emotional narrative.

Some puzzles are a little unintuitive or require a bit of backtracking, but for the most part this adventure flows very consistently and leaves the door open with mysteries that entice replayability and an absolute banger of an action mini-game.

Prepare to traipse a dream-like world as you throw shrimp all over the floor because you have the power to and god help me I must abuse it.

With some help from the said traffic light you do begin to piece some fragments together, in part through the discovery that you’re able to see moments of the past by touching objects in the environment. There’s no doubt it’s odd, but then relatively quickly some shocks and glimpses of a terrible incident pop into view and it’s hard not to get a bit hooked. It’s the game’s mixing of oddities like you befriending a traffic light or conversing with a penguin with some regularity but then veering into some pretty dark territory as well that help it stand out, but for those same reasons it won’t be for everyone.

Unreal Life is an absolute triumph when it comes to atmosphere and non-linear storytelling. The game’s impressive pixel design, loveable cast of characters and simple gameplay loop all work in conjunction to provide a thoroughly satisfying experience. Yes, sometimes the game’s puzzles felt a tad obtuse and the gameplay isn’t anything special, but these minor gripes didn’t take away from the absolute joy I had on this emotional journey with Hal and my new favourite talking traffic light.

Unreal Life is a charming indie game filled with story, adventure, discovery and a talking traffic light. It’s unique as you’ll be comparing timelines to discover what happened to the protagonist Hal on one fateful night. It’s a game that invokes curiosity and keeps the player intrigued through storytelling and puzzle, presented in a gorgeous pixel art of blue hue. Although feeling like it ended abruptly, there is a lot within Unreal Life to invoke emotion.

Unreal Life is a special sort of adventure game. It’s hauntingly beautiful, with a story that is more touching than you might expect. Especially when some of its primary cast members are an amnesiac young woman, an AI traffic light, and a anthropomorphic penguin. But it’s very much a tale of personal growth and discovery, with the journey to the truth of the situation being an emotional and weighty one.
