Uncanny Valley’s desire to hark back to the simpler days of survival horror is commendable, especially in those early moments where you’re flitting between abstract nightmares and a security job that feels increasingly isolated. However, the sheer openness of its non-linear plot means it’s all too easy to jump large sections of the story as you stumble on one of the game’s secrets too early on. Still, with a strict consequence-based system that rewards and punishes you in equal measure, Uncanny Valley has a lot of potential. It’s just a shame it doesn’t fully live up to it.

What I did play seemed frustrating and unfun by design; simple actions like interacting with an item (say, moving a bookshelf or checking a car door) caused unpredictable consequences, from the loss of other seemingly unrelated items (“I don’t need these any more”) to instant death. I love a game that asks you to explore and learn through consequences, but I never had a clue what I might even try to do next, everything I could try was a DEAD ending, and the game didn’t give me enough feedback to discern whether anything I was experiencing was intentional (the horror movie trope that the car won’t start) or a glitch (nope, the safe really should have opened). But I couldn't find it. What I found was a confused mess and plenty of bugs. I played it twice thinking maybe I was missing something. Maybe I have missed something, but both playthroughs ended in the exact same way. It's an ending… of sorts, I suppose. But I never got a gun (despite there being controls for a gun…), and I never got any keycards (even though there are inventory slots for keycards…), I picked up a fire extinguisher that there never seemed to be a use for, and I picked up an "AI Reconfigurator" that didn't seem to do anything no matter what I tried it on. After two attempts that have ended the same way I've given up any hope of unlocking any more of this game and have uninstalled it. There are much better games out there, don't waste your hard-earned cash on this one. Full Review »
