Jun 4, 2024I’ll certainly give Inti-Creates some credit here. Umbraclaw is trying some things outside of the developer’s usual wheelhouse, and they are interesting things. It almost gets there, but it ultimately feels caught between being some kind of roguelite and being a more linear action game. I also think the way the difficulty works here is a bit too manipulative in a way that doesn’t feel good. With all that said, Umbraclaw is still a nice-looking game that is very playable, and even if it fails trying something I will at least commend it for trying.

May 31, 2024Even though I managed to return Kuon to the world of the living and her loving owner, I found myself a bit disappointed with Umbraclaw. While it’s a novel and fascinating adventure, it’s also held back by some poorly utilized systems, frustrating save functionality, and often inconsistent and overwhelming difficulty. While I enjoyed it overall, it failed to stand out from recent spectacular entries from Inti Creates.

May 30, 2024I love the idea behind Umbraclaw and its character designs. However, the demanding nature and restrictions I place on myself while playing and some design choices keep me from savoring it as much as other platformers. The idea of growing stronger via deaths for second changes is so refreshing, though, and people who really enjoy a challenge may relish the chance to see how far they can go without faltering.
