However, after half an hour, it becomes impossible to let go.
When it comes to the quality of writing, the immediate comparison that comes to mind is none other than Firewatch and the relationship between Henry and Delilah.
The emotion is present but never sinks into pathos.
In terms of gameplay, The Wreck operates on simple ideas (a looped accident scene + memories to "explore"). It's nothing revolutionary, but it works well.
Furthermore, the game demonstrates enough inventiveness in its presentation to avoid monotony.
In the middle of the game, there is a powerful gameplay sequence where a character's grief is materialized through a series of slide-like images that you navigate forward or backward using the trigger to indicate the passage of time. The lighting effects are extraordinary.
It deeply moved me.
So, yes, perhaps The Wreck doesn't possess the same level of gameplay efficiency as Florence, another narrative game that I greatly enjoy, which skillfully incorporates small games to support its narrative.
However, The Wreck's story is much deeper.
At times, The Wreck becomes too verbose, with a few lengthy stretches towards the end. I found myself less affected by Juno's relationship with her mother, and some expected themes were addressed too quickly to resonate with me.
