Coming back to the family hotel after years, a young woman finds herself trapped with the ghosts from her past and an old cellular telephone as the only way to unveil a terrible truth.

1993 - LEWIS & CLARK COUNTY, MONTANA, US

Ten years ago, teenager Nicole and her mother left the family hotel after discovering her father Leonard's affair with, and pregnancy of Rachel, a girl her own age who eventually committed suicide.

Now that both of her parents have passed, Nicole hopes to fulfill her mother's last will to sell the hotel and make amends to Rachel's relatives. With the will and determination to put that chapter behind her, she returns to the hotel with the family's lawyer to audit the decaying structure.

As the weather unexpectedly turns for the worst, Nicole has no way to leave the large mountain lodge, and finds support in Irving, a young FEMA agent, using one of the first radio telephones ever built.

With his help, Nicole starts to investigate a mystery far deeper than what people in the valley thought. A story of love and death, where melancholy and nostalgia melt into a thrilling ghost tale.

The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a tense, thrilling experience for anyone who picks it up. If you are searching for something similar to PT, but without the horror aspect, then this is for you. But if you're looking for something to unleash a scream too, this may not be the title for you. Either way, if you want to understand the truth behind the suicide, then delve right in.

The Suicide of Rachel Foster is well constructed when it comes to design and mechanics, but is let down if you stop to examine the plot for a moment. The deeper into the game you get, the more it feels like it’s trying to shock rather than effectively engage with serious topics.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It won't be for everyone. If you like the slow, narrative driven but linear games than worth a try (especially if it's on discount). The graphic is OK (sometimes a bit too dark), the voice acting is good enough and the story as well. No big twist at the end but at the last few "rooms" there are a few very goosebumpy scenes (like the mannequins). The game will give you the necessary amount of help. The whole gameplay is approx 3 hrs (or maybe less) but have a good enough atmosphere to try it. Way better game than you imagine it after read the critics. Expand

I was surprised to learn that this is a new(ish) game because it plays like an older one (granted, with better graphics). The gameplayI was surprised to learn that this is a new(ish) game because it plays like an older one (granted, with better graphics). The gameplay reminded me a lot of Gone Home (first released in 2013). Some of the mechanics are awkward; possibly more due to porting to the Switch than anything else. Like Gone Home, you are exploring a big empty house/hotel and trying to piece together 'what happened', and pick up clues along the way and gain access to more and more of the building as you go.

As the title suggests, the story here is adult and heavy. I don't find that the overall story hangs together in a consistent way, and find that irksome.

Overall, it was a fine way to spend a rainy afternoon, but I wouldn't go out of my way to play it.

But due to the technical deficits and the weak implementation of the controls, much of the horror and charm of the game is lost. The storyline and its progression are very reminiscent of a good movie. So you should think twice before buying the new version of the game "The Suicide of Rachel Foster" for the Nintendo Switch. Thankfully, while this title doesn’t shy away from dealing with some creepy and/or disturbing circumstances over your character’s journey the title act seems to be given the gravity it deserves… just understand there are some dark revelations delivered along the way. Playing as a walking simulator, the pacing can be uneven and sometimes a bit frustratingly slow as you are awaiting new revelations to advance what you understand of the underlying story, but if you have the proper patience and tolerance for darkness this isn’t a bad ride.
