    The core mechanics hold old ties from the classic arcade shooter Super Pang where you shoot vertically, but with modern day twists. You are Harry, a brash and tenacious exterminator who has a knack for decimating bugs.
    Harrys current assignment takes him to the infested futuristic research facility on planet Zoit. The surviving and dwindling number of scientists employed him for his slaughtering skills. Harrys mission: survive until the decontamination of the building is complete, hoard coins like his life depended on it, and protect the scientists at all costs. Watch out for the spiders as they have a particular fondness for rubber encased scientists. After landing, you will move from room to room through the facility blasting rockets, lasers, and wielding the power of lighting upwards at anything not human.    … Expand

    The Bug Butcher is a spiritual successor that is very much possessed by its muse. This isn’t a subtle nod, it is soaked in Pang and it’s great because of it. The ability to play the game endlessly to beat your own score will keep you coming back. The fact that you can do it with a friend is just an even bigger incentive. The Bug Butcher isn’t reinventing anything, but it is a damn fine version of a classic game.

    The Bug Butcher feels like Earthworm Jim and Alien Hominid met in an arcade to play Space Invaders and the residual DNA collected from their shared joystick and button usage was used to genetically engineer The Bug Butcher. Its frenetic pace and creative arsenal create a humorously fun experience full of equal parts mirth and mayhem.

    The Bug Butcher is an absolutely solid homage to classic arcade shooters. It nails the shooting mechanic and provides a gradual level of difficulty that doesn't veer too much into impossible territory. Though it's a short game, there's enough to keep people interested for more than an afternoon, and it's a good fit on the Switch thanks to the short levels and co-op gameplay for endless mode. This is another indie port to Nintendo's console that's worth checking out.

    The Bug Butcher is a fun Pang-style romp that works in bursts or in longer play sessions—I found it a good game to play while catching up on TV shows. If you like this arcade game style, The Bug Butcher should definitely be on your radar.

    The Bug Butcher draws on the much beloved 2D shooters of the 1980s and 1990s to deliver an experience that is not only visually marvelous but also brings simple and fun gameplay mechanics and a completely absurd and well-written humour. The game is set to be enjoyed for a long time and any fans of the genre and beyond should definitely check out this piece of work.

    The game offers excellent controls and many weapons to kill all the enemies that appear on the screen. However, it also has some small gameplay bugs.

    Presentation-wise, it’s okay, but not great. The art style harkens to Saturday morning cartoons, but the alien designs are bland and unoriginal. It’s also jarring how the enemies are generic aliens/monsters rather than resembling the titular bugs. The sarcastic dialogue between the Butcher and the Scientist gives our protagonist a little more personality and the Animal Crossing-inspired chibi sounds they make in place of words render it that bit more amusing. Overall, The Bug Butcher is enjoyable but forgettable.

Głównym bohaterem jest Harry – tępiciel robali, który przylatuje na pomoc placówce badawczej na odległej planecie. Gra przypomina klasyczny tytuł arcade – Pang z Amigi – w którym strzelaliśmy w balony, które po trafieniu rozdzielały się na mniejsze. Gra austriackiego Awfully Nice Studios jest przeniesieniem tamtego mechanizmu rozgrywki w nowoczesne realia.

    Zamiast balonów są obślizgłe robale z różnymi właściwościami ataku, które poruszają się w przeróżny sposób (latają, skaczą, chodzą po suficie). Opisywany tytuł to przedstawiciel gatunku arcade.

    Harry aby wypełnić zadanie i wytępić szkodniki ma arsenał broni do wykorzystania. Począwszy od karabinu maszynowego po różne rakiety, lasery i bomby zamrażające. Dodatkowo co jakiś czas pojawiają się bonusy przyspieszające wystrzał i ochraniające bohatera. Głównym zadaniem poza wybiciem robali jest ochrona naukowców, którzy co jakiś czas atakowani są przez chodzące po suficie pająki. W grze zawsze strzela się do góry, więc robale muszą przelecieć lub przepełznąć nad bohaterem.

    Gra oferuje trzy tryby gry:

    ARCADE
    W trybie Arcade do przejścia jest 30 kilkuminutowych misji podzielonych na pięć pięter po sześć zadań na każdym z nich. Jest to też mini fabuła z dawką humoru do zaliczenia, z zapisem postępu bohatera. Przechodzimy tu kolejne poziomy, zbieramy kasę, ulepszamy broń i kombinezon Harrego.

    Jeśli chodzi o plansze na których gramy to tak naprawdę mamy ich tylko pięć (piętra), a urozmaicenie w misjach polega na różnej kolejności pojawiania się szkodników i wyniku punktowego jaki należy osiągnąć. Oczywiście ostatnia misja na piętrze to również walka z bossem w windzie. Poziomy na wyższych piętrach różnią się tym, że mają dodatkowe blokady, które trzeba uruchomić lub zestrzelić. Za wykręcenie odpowiednich rekordów w misji możemy zdobyć od jednej do trzech gwiazdek, a bonusem może być osiągnięcie odpowiednio wysokiego combo. Oczywiście im wyższy mnożnik, tym lepszy wynik więc perfekcyjne tępienie robali przekłada się na więcej punktów. Gdy Harry zostanie dotknięty przez robala lub trafiony jego pociskiem to traci pasek życia i mnożnik punktów.

    Zadania są kilkuminutowe i mogą skończyć się szybciej gdy robactwo zaatakuje naukowca. Jeśli nie wytępimy wszystkich insektów w określonym czasie to również gra się kończy zagazowaniem pomieszczenia. Szybsze unicestwianie wroga szybciej wywołuje kolejną falę co pozwala zmieścić się w z góry określonym czasie. Niech Was nie zmyli kilkuminutowe zadanie bo będziecie je powtarzać kilkanaście a nawet kilkadziesiąt razy jeśli będziecie chcieli osiągnąć po trzy gwiazdki w każdym z nich. Polecam takie podejście do tematu, bo jest to tytuł arcade i liczy się najwyższy wynik, najwyższe combo a nie tylko zaliczenie zadania.

    PANIKA
    Kolejnym trybem gry jest Panika – czyli nic innego jak horda. W kolejnych falach atakują nas przeciwnicy, których należy wytępić. Na tabeli wyników prezentowany jest nasz High Score, który jest tym wyższy im większa ilość przebytych fal, pokonanych robali i jednostajna gra jednym ciągiem. Co falę można zakupić pewne udoskonalenie za zdobyte monety, ale gdy przegramy wszystko trzeba zaczynać od nowa. Plansze są te same co w trybie Arcade, wybieramy tylko piętro – czyli odpowiedni styl graficzny/układ pomieszczenia i strzelamy.

    CO-OP
    Ostatnim trybem gry jest co-op dla dwóch graczy. Dzieląc się Joy-Conami można wspólnie przejść tryb paniki – bo tym właściwie jest. Różnicą jest tylko możliwość ratowania kolegi gdy dostanie obrażenia i przez kilka sekund wzywa pomocy. Tytuł jest mocno grywalny i po zgonie chce się pobić swój rekord, przejść dalej i kontynuować. Wmawiasz sobie „jeszcze raz” a później znów „ jeszcze raz” i tak w kółko.

    I tym właśnie jest The Bug Butcher. Prosty mechanizm arcade jest łatwy do zrozumienia ale do opanowania wymaga już zaangażowania i umiejętności. Zmiana klimatu ze strzelania do balonów w anihilację robactwa na stacji badawczej to także fajna zagrywka. Gra ma ładny kreskówkowy styl i animację. Obrzydliwe, a zarazem fajnie wykreowane robactwo, ostrą muzykę i przede wszystkim mechanizm rozgrywki. Tryb misji zaliczyłem w około 4-5 godzin, ale to dlatego, że zrobiłem go na wszystkie gwiazdki.

    Tępiciela robali polecam, bo ma spore pokłady rozgrywki, a tryb misji to tylko dodatek aby poznać mechaniki gry, przeciwników i broń… Później to już tylko eksterminacja kolejnych fal robactwa solo lub w duecie.

    Nice game. Old Pang clone, with future insects/aliens scenario. Perfect for to players. Lot o fun and frustration.

The major pluses are hectic gameplay, tight controls, and blasting large groups of aliens with powerful special weapons feels REALLY satisfying! On the downside; this is a short game (only 30 levels, 2-3 minutes per level), the backgrounds and monsters are fairly repetitive, and the "boss fights" are not really very memorable at all (which feels like a missed opportunity). I enjoyed my (short) time with The Bug Butcher - it is certainly worth a look if you like shooting games.… Expand

    You more from level to level with a lot of enemies, each one having it's predictable pattern. This predictable pattern approach is the key of the game where you anticipate what is on screen and move accordingly. This is very pleasant and part of the addictive approach. If you loose, it's on your own.

    Solo arcade mode is the main "campaign" with a tiny story. You move levels, win money, buy new power ups and repeat. This progression system is fine tuned, after a moment, levels become harder and you can try to improve your score on previous levels, and because you have new power up, previous levels become easier to beat, improving your score and money to win new gear for harder levels. This allow you to still discover new possibilities after few hours.

    There is a 1 player and 2 players mode where you need to beat improve your world wide score in a continuous level. You win money, buy power ups to beat stronger waves.

    Each run is around 2/3 minutes which is a perfect timing for intensive action.

    I noticed some bugs in character animation (when under power up) but that doesn't impact the gameplay. When there are a lot of coins (when a wave is over), random coins are not catch when you walk on them. Some coins and item fall, near the borders and can't be catch. This doesn't appear often but it distract you from the action.

    My main concern about this Switch version is some (few) random big frame rate drops that can happen is some intense action moment and you could lost a point for this (like 10 frames drop). It's a real shame because the game very smooth all along and then, at some random moment: Frame drop.

    I wanted to give this game a 8 but it lost a point because I lost some lives in intensive fight because of the frame drop. We can hope devs will fix those and I will increase my score.

    EDIT: Increasing to 8 as I still play and enjoy it, depicts the frame drops.    … Expand
