    Synaptic Drive feels slightly too expensive and bare-bones and feels almost 'early-access' quality in some regards. That's a real shame, since the core gameplay is solid and lots of fun if you have friends to make the most out of it. The game will most likely improve over time, with ongoing updates and new content downloads promised, but since we can only review what is currently on offer, we're only able to recommend this to the most die-hard fans of Custom Robo who find themselves constantly longing for a new entry in this niche franchise. This isn't quite on the same level yet, but it should scratch the itch nonetheless.

    It may not be the most refined fighter but Synaptic Drive's highly configurable mechanics and retro aesthetic make it worth playing.

    Went into this thinking it'd be the next Custom Robo (GCN) but it falls short on so many levels. The tutorial introduces the fundamentals off the bat, but there is little presented to guide players through a process of learning the functionality of weapons beyond the barebones arcade mode, which presents several challenges to the player that are rated by score. The nice thing about past CR games was that they provided an inviting means of learning in the form of a story mode which is entirely absent here. Mechanics are a bit of a step up; the Wire is a nice improvement over the bomb. But navigating the UI is a chore... the text descriptions serve to tell very little about how weapons will actually perform, and setting loadouts feels clunky.
    Like, most of all, if I want to invite my friends to play along with me the issue of providing any sort of interface or features that actually invite them to want to participate as a new player will certainly still their interest.    … Full Review »
