Even without any Dragon Quest familiarity, The Hero is a total blast to play in Smash. And you can be sure Mr. Sakurai got his depiction just right! [Issue #41 – September 2019, p. 16]

Hero creates an entirely new archetype in a game that already features 74 unique characters (76 including Pokemon Trainers’ individual Pokemon), one that’s heavily influenced by RNG and a player’s ability to quickly identify the best of four options presented in a menu in the heat of battle, and that’s kind of astounding. It’ll be very interesting to see how the competitive community reacts to a character so focused on luck, but on a casual to intermediate level, Hero feels like a great (if uneven) addition to the fray.

The fighter included here is "Hero"; a selection of four Dragon Quest protagonists that you can swap between through alternate costumes (withThe fighter included here is "Hero"; a selection of four Dragon Quest protagonists that you can swap between through alternate costumes (with each character having two colours each). What is perhaps Hero's most notorious element is the character's "Command Selection" move, which generates a menu of random moves for him to use. Each special move uses up a certain amount of "MP". If you have insufficient MP, you can't use the move (MP regenerates over time though). These factors make Hero largely a risk/reward character, which is an interesting and certainly unique approach.

The included stage is good, but the music selection is disappointing, consisting of only eight tracks with no new remixes. The weakest Challenger Pack thus far then, but still worth a purchase for the uniqueness associated with Hero.
