Super Mario Party is a party game – a digital board game that is also a collection of minigames, as well as a few other modes that are also, in effect, collections of minigames, such as the cooperative River Race as well as the Sound Stage area, which is a party rhythm game.

Super Mario Party is a party game – a digital board game that is also a collection of minigames, as well as a few other modes that are also, in effect, collections of minigames, such as the cooperative River Race as well as the Sound Stage area, which is a party rhythm game.

The board game is the “heart” of Super Mario Party, and here, there are actually two closely related board games. The objective of each game is to collect stars, but there are two ways to play – as single players, and two teams of two. The individual player mode has you moving around a fairly linear board with a few branching paths, while the team mode has you moving around on a rectangular board with various features interrupting the flow through the board. In either case, your goal is to get enough coins and then to land on the star space, which allows you to buy a star, which then causes the star to move afterwards to a new location.

This mode is chaotic but reasonably okay. There’s some strategy involved – each character has special dice, which can be rolled instead of a normal six-sided die, with various dice giving less random results or more extreme results (Bowser, for example, has a die with 0, 0, 1, 8, 9, and 10 on it, while Shy Guy has 0, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4), but as the rolls are random, there’s only so much control you have over where you land. Various spaces have various effects, and while you can control what area of the board you’re aiming for, you have no guarantee of actually landing on critical spaces. The team game gives you a bit more control, as the players roll dice and have them added together to determine the team’s movement, and the board gives you more control over where you’re going. There are allies around the board (player characters who you aren’t playing as), which can give you additional movement as well as access to their dice. The team mode gives you more control over getting these, but both modes give you at least some access to them.

The minigames are ultimately at the heart of the game, and are where players make most of their coins. Some of these have the players competing against each other as individuals, while others have them paired randomly into teams (sometimes with your allied characters following you around a well!). These games are much more skill-based, which is both a good thing (more skilled players have an advantage) and a bad thing (it’s entirely possible for better players to literally never lose at the minigames).

All in all, this is an okay game, but it’s nothing particularly special; I wouldn’t play it very much, and it isn’t worth the asking price of $60.

The Sound Stage mode is a pretty generic rhythm game with Mario theming, which is cute enough, but very limited in scope.

The River Cruise mode has you paddling a raft down a river as a team while completing a series of team minigames against the clock to try and get more time. This mode is actually really easy, so while it is kind of nice to cooperate as a group, you’re going to succeed every time, which means that repeated trips can get boring after a while, especially as there isn’t all that much variety in what the actual river trip brings.

Finally, there’s Challenge Road, where you play through all 80 minigames back to back to try and get to the end of it. You can quit whenever you want and come back to it, but it is still nothing particularly exciting or special.

All in all, Super Mario Party is what it is – a mediocre party game. It is chaotic enough to create some potentially interesting moments, but ironically, the minigames may be *too* skill based, making it less random and thus making me wonder whether it’d be better to just play a game like Super Smash Bros. or Super Mario Kart, which are more fun as actual *games*.

If you can rent this from the local library for some short term dumb fun, that’s not a bad choice, but I can’t really say this would be worth buying – if you play it much at all on your own, you’ll get too good at the minigames to really be able to play it as a fun party game. The game itself is rather repetitive, so it isn’t something you want to play a ton of, and after about 17 hours or so, you’ll have seen literally everything the game has to offer many times over.

While I applaud (and enjoy) the extra modes and changes to the system (e.g. the individual dice is great, but could use a little balancing) that Nintendo has added, it feels that it comes about at a loss of development towards the original game itself. I think that they should have made (and hoping they will in DLC) bigger boards in addition to the current boards offered. It really feels skimmed down. The wife likes this Mario Party (her first) and I am happy with that. But, personally, after playing most of the previous installments, I'm left wanting.

Let's bring a stop to shamelessly approving everything Nintendo makes and offer valid criticism and complement to their titles.

Introduction: Super Mario Party is the 11th main series entry in the long-running franchise of board games meet mini-games. Most games in this series consist of heavy competitive gameplay against friends as you try to become the superstar, except for the mostly butchered Mario Party 9 and 10. Does this game live up to the past games of fun competition or is this game not very super?

Party Mode: The standard mode for most Mario Party entries. Nintendo changes up the formula this time by making smaller maps and smaller dice rolls. Each character has 2 dice blocks, one standard 1 through 6 dice and a special character die that has certain number rolls depending on what character you have chosen. I think this is a nice addition to the series, as it makes for more strategic gameplay and high risk, high reward moves. That’s sadly where my praise has to end due to the unbalanced nature of everything else. The coin economy in this game is straight broken. Coins are given out in abundant with very little chances of losing any. When losing coins, its only 5 or 10 coins max. Stars only cost 10 coins, mixing that in with players receiving too many coins and the map being small makes it so that everyone is getting an equal amount of stars most of the game. Items cost very little, between 2 to 5 coins, with the most overpower item, an item that sends you straight to the star being only 10 coins and easy to get. There are also these spaces in the game called ally spaces, which give you one random character that is not being used to play on the board. These allies give you their character block and roll an addition 1 to 2 dice roll on top of your dice roll. These can infinitely stack and can help someone get a star almost every turn they play. So you either have the problem of everyone being able to get the star all the time or the problem of only one person being able to get all the stars due to stacked allies since coins will never be an issue, everyone will always have enough coins for a star 90% of the time. At the end of each game, bonus stars are awarded for mostly trivial things that will give the win to some who failed at most things throughout the match. I like some of the concepts that Nintendo was going for in this new rendition of Mario Party, but it all fell flat due to balancing issues.

Partner Mode: Very similar to Party mode except it a 2 vs 2 with combine dice roll. You get to move around the board in any direction you like and movement is set up like an RTS Fire emblem kind of way. I feel like this mode is a bit more balance since you have to strategically land on the star space to get one, eliminating some of the problems I had with party mode.

River Survival: A co-op game where every player is in a boat going downstream. You work together to get more time, by popping balloons to activate mini-games for everyone to play, by making choices on which routes to take and, by helping each other avoid obstacles. This mode is the best mode in the game. It’s defiantly a fun mode to play with your friend, especially to defuse tension after playing the mess of party mode.

Sound Stage: Think of Rhythm Heaven mix with Wario Ware and motion controls. Matches of this mode only go on for 5 to 10 minutes. It’s a nice, short bust of fun but everyone playing it will get bored after 1 or 2 rounds of it.

Challenge Road: A single player mode with not much to offer. Can only be unlocked by playing all the multiplayer mode first (pretty ironic, if you ask me) and you have to play it to unlock 2 of the 4 locked characters. The only thing you do in this mode is complete a series of challenges within the games 80+ mini-games. Got pretty bored of this mode just wanting to unlock the character behind this wall.

Mini Games: I should talk about the mini-games since they make almost half of what makes a Mario Party game special. The mini-games make great use of the Switch's gimmicks. Some are a little boring and dull but most have that Mario Party charm. Even with the badly designed boards, most will have fun playing these mini-games.

Technical: The game looks great and blah, blah, blah… It’s a Nintendo game, it’s going to look and run great. The soundtrack is a little generic and not as memorable as some of the Mario Party games of the past. The UI in the game looks weirdly clean and not fitting for a Mario Party game.

Veridic: Super Mario Party has some cool ideas but at the end of the day, there is nothing super about it. Its main mode is a mess due to the new additions, co-op is the best part, which is pretty funny since that was the worst part of 9 and 10. Single player should have never been a thing but at least Nintendo still knows how to make some fun mini-games. I like the direction they were going for but this game ultimately fails at what makes Mario Party fun, competitive, and the series that we love so much.

Though I like the idea of having this small hub area, where you can choose which game mode you want to play, it feels a bit empty. But I’m a big fan of hub areas, which evolve through progression. It is a nice touch, that the more crystals you collect, the day goes by and the music gets more intense. There are more than enough playable characters and it’s nice to have bowser’s minions also included.

Except for some new mechanics, you can say that the mario party mode is the one from the older games. But there are still some things, which bother me. Overall this mode was pretty cool and fun to play, but like many people already mentioned, 4 boards are a bit too few and the board themselves are too small. With some good luck and some partners you can almost run through the whole board in one turn. I don’t have a problem with the individual dice every character has, but they aren’t really balanced. The partners are in my opinion a bit too powerful, since you get a 1-2 added to your count for every partner in your team. Another problem I have with this mode is the amount of coins you get during a party. Even if you lose a 2v2 minigame you still get 2 coins. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the stars only cost 10 coins. So you almost have no chance of missing a star, because of the huge amount of coins you are given. Not even the shop is more expensive. You can get a golden pipe, which brings you directly in front of the star, for 10 coins only. Also, the lucky and unlucky fields seem to be a bit useless, since the events that can happen aren’t that fascinating. The chance of landing on an unlucky field already is pretty low and the chance of losing a star there is even lower. Otherwise the boards are well made. Every board has its unique theme and special events, where you can get coins or stars. For the most time the soundtrack is also pretty good.

The rafting mode is pretty cool, but they could have added some more minigames, because they get repetitive after playing some rounds.

The partner party uses the mechanic of star rush, which isn’t necessarily bad. The concept is fun, but, like in the normal mario party, it’s almost impossible to land on an unlucky field, because you can easily land on an item or lucky field almost every time.

Sadly, the online mode was a big disappointment. Instead of playing a normal mario party you can only play a total amount of ten minigames and that’s it.

The minigames were overall enjoyable. 80 minigames is an acceptable amount in my opinion, even if there could have been some more rafting minigames. The minigames, which uses the HD Rumble, work almost perfectly and are really cool.

To conclude, this game isn't perfect, but it’s one step closer to the right direction. It’s definitely better than MP 9 and MP 10, that’s for sure.

The reason that I'm giving this game a 0 is that I've never seen a boardgame that solely depends on such skill (because of the minigames). The game itself revolves around coins. And the minigames are the game changer. Also the cpu's are the worst teammates in group based minigames, the cpu's programming is awful.

I don't see why this game gets a lot of hate. sure it's not what people wanted and yes it isn't the best Mario party ever but I don't see why it's bad just because of that. I have to agree the online isn't any good but if your playing locally with a friend it's a blast! also it's the only Mario party on the switch.... for now.

One problem is the maps are small and so few in number. The fact stars only cost 10 coins makes it too easy to get them and the random placement of the star location on small maps make this game 100% luck based. This results in a game where no matter how far ahead you are though playing well in mini games or how lucky you've been, the game can going to anyone at anytime for no reason other than complete chance. This has always been the case but not this extreme and unfortunately it makes the main Party mode unenjoyable after a few games.

On the positive side the game looks fantastic and is very well polished. The mini games themselves are super fun and some may even been the best in the series. There's actually a number of other game modes people don't know about aside from the main Party Mode. River survival is a path based game where you work as a team and play mini games to gain more time. This was a surprisingly fun and I would recommend it. Another fun mode is Sound stage which involves rhythm base joy con controls. Each of these 2 extra modes have their own pool of mini games which is a fantastic idea.

Over all I'd say this is defiantly a worth while title as a family game or a good drinking game to play with friends on a night in, but would say to save your money if you're buying it to play single player or at least wait until its down to around £35. Hope to see DLC in the future.

You get tired of same 4 Boards super fast. Mini games are fun and use the HD rumble and gyro control on the Joy cons very very well. One of the best party games for the switch no doubt !

I think Nintendo should make Mario characters for this game like how Rosalina was made for Mario Galaxy. I thought Pom Pom should of had Boom Boom also side her in the game but whatever. The boards for me were two small and simplistic. I do like the Beach and Mine boards but the last board is honestly so boring for me. The items were not even enough and some of the items you couldn't get unless you landed on a item space. The red space count was low, and the battle system was kinda dumb to be honest. Also the bad luck spaces were lame and weren't a good substitute for Bowser Spaces. The mini games were amazing as usual. I found that a lot of them were enjoyable and very creative. I felt that the developers of this game spent about an equal amount of time on all 5 modes because it didn't feel like Mario Party was the main mode of this game, it felt the popular mode instead. I know that Nintendo saw the reception of this game and definitely we will be seeing a great Super Mario Party 2. Expand

This game isn't bad, but it isn't good either. There are a very limited number of boards to play on, and the game itself feels largely luck based. There stars aren't even worth enough coins to make playing the minigames worthwhile. It's completely possible to lose every minigame and still win the overall game

Challenging and Interesting board game levels? Nope, each of the 4 total boards was lacking depth and imagination. The very last board game for example, runs in such a small loop that everyone gets a star and there's no chance whatsoever as to how the session will end up. There is no strategy in this game, it's all pure luck. What I enjoyed about the previous board games, was the inspiration they took from the Super Mario Universe. This one was all about banality and cookie cutter cliches.

Mini Games? Yeah they were not too bad, but nothing really that special. I missed the cut throat nature of the previous mini games. This one's a bit too family friendly. The biggest sin of this game is that they force you to use the mini controllers per player from the switch - which really ruins the entire experience of the game. There is no option to use a full size controller.

Replayability? zero - see board game gripe above.

Overall, this felt like a money grab from Nintendo. I expect quality when I play a Nintendo game, and this one really fell short. To add to this, I can't understand why anyone is rating this highly, I would put this up there with Bethesda's failing with Fallout 76. Don't buy this game, it's not even worth $20.00 They should have called it "Below Average Mario Party".

Stars are super easy to get, hardly an accomplishment, and with the big dice rolls and small levels you can some times get 2 stars in a round. Other games had a little more skill element, this one feels a lot more luck based. Coins feel a lot less valued, in regards to bonus stars, there is no Coin star or reward for saving coins. You can ONLY use joy cons, which honestly sucks. Many of the games use tilt controls, which sometimes fun, but often times frustrating and messy. There arent a lot of stages. The alternate game modes are fun maybe the first time around but are not rewarding in the slightest. Theres maybe ONE thing is this game to unlock. Why! Like give me a reason to keep playing. What really bothers me is no story mode. I get it, mario party is a party game, but this game has ZERO value played a lone, where as some of the older games in the series had single player modes that I really enjoyed.

Honestly this is a good game, if you're a baby. But i'd rather play any mario party from mario party 1-6. This game isn't trash, but its not worth the hefty price tag. I think mario kart, or the jack box party pack, or mario vs rabbids, would be a better muitiplayer/party game than this.

Un buen juego pero no para jugarlo solo, si estas con otros 3 amigos, les asegura una gran experiencia, los diferentes dados para cada personaje le agregan una capa de complejidad agradable. 1. There are ONLY FOUR BOARDS! I remember playing Mario Party games on Game Cube that had way more variety. That was a decade ago. Given the advancement in technology, there should be MORE boards, not less.

    2. You can't play boards online. Not even with your friends in a private match. Instead you are forced to play a small set of mini-games, over and over again. I bought a Nintendo Online Subscription specifically for this game when it came out. I cancelled it after a month.

    3. So many features in this game just seem poorly balanced. Numerous items are completely useless to buy, while others are over-powered. Stars are waaay too cheap. After only a couple turns, there isn't even a risk of not being able to afford one. The random mini-game wheel seems to heavily favour playing the same games over-and-over again. Certain characters' dice are just awful compared to others.

I can't believe Nintendo is still selling this lackluster game for full price. It's been out for almost two years, and despite many complaints, they haven't updated it at all.

I figured I could spend some quality time with my mom, play a 15 turn game like we're sharing a living room, you know? I mean, the technology we have is more than capable. But no. Less engaging and addictive than what came before it on the wii, and it's a pity since there is a lot of possible fun and variety from the minigames. But the pace is a bit slow and there are few stages and you don't get to play as many minigames as you could and the result is more random than it should be

The games are fun but they seriously destroyed the mario party franchise with the beyond terrible selection of maps. Only 4 maps and they are all just variations of a boring square

This game COULD be decent. But there's a dealbreaker for me. The AI turns are sooooo agonizingly slow. It seems like it takes forever to get through their turns. All the dialogue, the slow animations. It really drags the pace of the game down to where I'm staring at my phone more than playing the game. It's that bad.

Very disappointed in the lack of boards for free for all Mario Party mode (4 player no teams). 3 boards are available at start with only one unlockable board.

The team vs team mode uses the previous boards with some variations.

Highly recommeded for anyone who's looking for a game to play with their family (if their family mostly consists of non-gamers). It's a fun, casual game for the most part with a fantastic selection of minigames.

However, there are elements of game design in the game that I for the life of me cannot understand. Why would you ever put random elements (completely out of the players

Why would you ever put random elements (completely out of the players controls) at the end of a board game that decides who actually wins? It's absolutely ridiculous and something that should never have been implemented.

Not enough maps you only get four that are recycled to make it seem like eight. There's mainly a bunch of mini games. Somehow this went from a Mario board game to a Mario themed mini game. It sucks its nothing like they used to be. I'll never buy another Mario party again

It's empty, void of personality, and sterile. There's only four boards, but every one of them plays exactly the same. The mini games are forgettable, and lack variety. This is by far the worst Mario Party to date. NDcube shows no idea of the direction the franchise is going, and at this point I don't care if they want to change the formula or stick to the original one, but for the love of god, they NEED to commit to a direction instead of delivering this half assed attempt at OG Mario Party.

Only redeeming qualities are the graphics quality, and the potential fun the side modes can provide during the first times you play them.

There was also some fun modes outside of the main course. The roster also have a variety of characters to play as without being too repetitive. There are a few let downs though, first, there’s only 4 game boards in both the Team Party and Mario Party modes. The Power Stars cost is too low and should have been a way to increase the price for difficulty or turn purposes. The Bonus Stars at the end aren’t as special as they were too. But there’s always one thing that will always be entertaining. A minigame called Slaparazzi. Where you take pictures of beating up your favorite (maybe even least favorite) Mario characters. And of course you can use them for meme pictures if they were taken at the right moment. Expand

Super Mario Party attempts to bring Mario Party back to it roots; or at least that is what NdCube tried to do. If anything, Super Mario Party is more like Diet Mario Party, it has a plethora of issues that you can look up on your own, or you'll immediately notice if you're a veteran Mario Party fan.

Trash. Absolute trash. Spend your money on literally anything else. I once spent half as much money as the cost of this game on a bottle of tequila that tasted awful and gave me heartburn, and it was still a better purchase than this travesty.

Too many modes, not enough boards and items. Character roster is great, though. We're slowly but surely getting closer to another great Mario Party game.

For now, this is good. Just please make the next one not make me use a hecking Joy-Con.

Super Mario Party goes back to its roots and delivers just like it should. The vast number of different modes, really prevents any to shine the brightest, but the entire game is a small step back that greatly leaps forward. It makes us only more excited for the next entry. Something we haven't felt with the Mario Party series in ages...

Both players and critics agreed that in the last couple of years Mario Party’s quality has been dropping. Nintendo decided to go for broke this time and I hope slapping “Super” in front of the title heralds the restart of the franchise, because SMP finally delivers what we expected. [12/2018, p.51]

Complex and unpredictable board game, numerous mini-games and being able to play as your favorite character – those are the three pillars of Mario Party’s success. Neither of these elements was polished to perfection over the years, but together they offer a very enjoyable experience. [Issue#234, p.72]
