It's not perfect, but I've owned and played all the console Mario Partys - and this is the best one. It really is the most accessible, and the graphics are gorgeous. Mini Games are mostly great, some stellar ones, some that are a little meh, but always lots of laughs in the room for each.

By the way, my 9 score is as a 4-player game. As a solo 1 player game, it's probably a 6 or 7.

Super Mario Party is fun, but it leaves me a little bit conflicted.

I (and many others from what I can tell) prefer this style of gameplay to the 'all moving in a vehicle' from Mario Parties 9 and 10. The other modes are nice additions too, and really take advantage of the Switch's versatility.

However, on the other hand, you're forced to use a single Joy-Con controller for each player. If you want to play Super Mario Party in handheld mode, with a Pro Controller, or with two Joy-Con via the Joy-Con Grip, you're out of luck. Since I find holding single Joy-Con awkward, this was a let-down for me, despite the many ways the controller is used (it's too small to play with comfortably in my opinion).

Still, control issues/limitations aside, Super Mario Party is a welcome return to form. It seems that fewer (if any) minigames this time are luck-based, which is a plus for me (I prefer games to be more skill-oriented).

Would be a great game to play with friends, if they don't mind the arguably awkward controls.

-Forced to use joycons? What about my pro controllers? Lame.

-Can't play in handheld. Why is this even on the Switch then?

    -Can't play full game online.

-Only 4 maps and they're small and boring.

    Shame on you, Nintendo. Shame.

It's a good game. Not so many mini-games, boards... really tiny (the stars moves often really close to the character who took the star just before).
But it works, all ppl i've played with are full of joy, laughing, asking to continue to play; even sometimes refusing to play at first and loving it ! It's really nice game but not much more.

Sure, not all of them are masterpieces, but I never really felt like any of them were that bad. A complaint I see often about this game is that there are only 4 maps, and I agree with it to a point but it never really mattered to me. If you like a lot of variety in your maps, don’t expect a lot from this. The regular party is great and all, but where the game really shines is with the other modes. River Survival is only a LOT of fun when playing with friends, but otherwise not that bad. Partner Party is great because you have a lot more freedom in where you move around the map and it’s just pure party fun. You’ll have a great time playing this one with friends. Challenge Road is probably my favorite, you complete all 80 minigames with a certain objective to complete (I.e. complete this in 10 seconds, beat the rival team) and it even includes an expert mode once finished with the normal mode. Now it’s time to talk criticism. The only reason I gave this game an 8 out of 10 instead of a 9 or a perfect 10 is because of the Online Mariothon. You can only play about 10 of the minigames and in its current state it is unplayable. There are way more than 10 4 player minigames and it even would’ve been nice to add in a few of the 2v2 or 1v3 minigames. But besides that, I was happy with my purchase, and I would recommend any Switch owner to get this game. Expand

I've played this game for about 5 hours so far.
Positives - The car is gone! Lots of action, huge character selection, and lots of game modes. Best Mario Party in years by far.

I would like to have the ability to change the price for stars, and motion sensor mini games off. This is not yet an option. Like most nintendo games lack of online play is frustrating.

Even with the negatives I do see them as fixable with future updates. I enjoy it very much, and playing with friends is a blast. Pick it up for yourself but maybe wait a few months to see how serious the devs take the updates.

The game really gets your heart beating and makes you forget about all the stress at the back of your head and it's just simple to teach people who are new to Mario Party how to play. The first Mario Party game I got was Mario Party 8 for the Wii, but many years later I find myself buying this game. I may sound biased towards Nintendo but that's because I grew up in a Nintendo household and Nintendo takes up half of my childhood, and they make original titles and creative new ways to play. Great game! I recommend this to people who are having family troubles or getting back together with longtime friends.

The Mario Party format will always make it a favorite for friends gathering together. However this was one of the few Nintendo Switch games that I felt did not live up to its predecessors. This game does not add anything of significance new to the series, and offers a disappointing 4 total maps. This iteration feels like its missing a significant DLC update.

Quite fun to play, better than previous Mario Parties and more in line with some of the classic ones. Having an online option is also good, would've been perfect if the online was strenghtened and had more options too.

While the amount of boards is very small, it’s still a decent game. If dlc comes with new boards I’ll rate higher. The character roster is decent. It’s better than the 9 and 10 games, but falls a bit short with 8 and earlier.

I was skipping the last Mario party games, because i was not enjoying the new direction Nintendo was taking on them. Thankfully for this one, they opted to sticky with the old (and best) N64 board formula. Sure, there's some other party modes apart from that, but honestly, the only thing I could care, is to play a Mario Party the way it's supposed to play. Like previous games, this still sucks if you're going for single play. Just forget it if you don't have anyone to play with. Don't count on it as well if you're planning online play. That sucks too! It's limited to play a few mini-games and it's very laggy. However, if you could arrange 2 or 3 more friends to play with, that's another story, but still, I feel Nintendo could have done a bit better on this.

The mini-games are very good for the most part, but there's only 4 boards and I'm not sure about this compact format they have now, but that's not even my biggest complaint. I fell that now is too easy for anyone to get stars, it only cost 10 coins (instead of 20 from previous games) and even players who didn't get the first place on mini-games receives coins. That's a bit unfair to players who strive the most to win mini-games. Also, each board match takes longer than before, damaging the match pace. Mostly because of the overdone characters animations. From simple actions like rolling the dice to Toaddete (who is now the star keeper) taking foverer to move to one place to another. Everything moves so slow! Also you cannot skip cpu actions. Why making us watch the whole sequence of the cpu talking to the shop seller? It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it really damages the match flow.

Thankfully, it's something really easy to fix on a DLC. If Nintendo does it, I will upgrade my score to an 8, maybe 9 if they add more boards to it.

In conclusion, it's still not the perfect Mario Party we were hoping for, but that's the right way. Never get rid again from the N64 formula. Never!

I did over play it when it first released; I believe coming back to it and playing it a year later, the biggest thing that sticks out to me, negatively, would be a lack of boards. Although, it is definitely a fun party game played in small bursts. The controls work well and the motion related controls tend to work most of the time.

Pre release had hyped this up as a more return to the original formula i.e. no cars (didn't even bother playing those) but couldn't have been further from the truth. This turned out to be a a major disappointment for various reasons as many other people have noted in reviews.

    - There's only 4 boards. These 4 boards can barely be considered boards as they have a small grid like structure. It's almost as they tried doing some kind of grid like formula, scratched it, and said well heres 4 let's make it work. They are painfully pathetic, aesthetically and playability.

-Economy is bad. Stars are now 10 coins reduced from 20 of the original. Everyone gets coins from mini games also.

-Golden warp pipe is broke. This ties in with last point but a golden pipe is 10 coins which can be farmed to buy over and over and then buy 10 coin star. Don't remember much of the other items but not good.

-Dice block only goes to 6. No idea why they would change this but I'm sure it has to do with tiny boards for making this decision.

-Ally characters also impede flow of game. If someone gets one, two, three or even four, (don't know how many you can get) they are able to lap the entire board it makes no sense. Now had they done it where you get an ally and can use their special dice ability, that would have been fine as that idea is the only decent new addition to the game. But it doesn't work that way they roll extra dice on the turn allowing for more travel on the tiny maps with broken economy.

-Online support was a joke. This made it sound like, and I'm sure most people agree, that online meant you could play the maps online with others. Not the case of-course. You're allowed to compete in FIVE mini games online to see who wins.

    - And my least favorite I saved for last, motion controls & Joy Con. This is the worst aspect in that you cannot use the pro controller or even two joy cons. You have to use one joy con but it gets worse...there's motion control. I hated that about the Wii (least favorite NINTENDO console ever) but now you have to give high fives and other motion BS. Don't get me started on the motion control specific modes I'm sure as F*** not getting up pretending I'm in a marching band.

And there you have it for reasons that ruin the game. But why 4 /10? Well, realistically I'm sure some kids and people out there will enjoy so even though I overall don't like it, I can see where some may enjoy it. Especially kids who never played originals. As an adult who grew up on the originals and probably too old for my age to be playing Mario party (F*** it) there's bound to be some young kids or dumb adults who will enjoy it. I, however, would not recommend this Mario Party.

The minigames are fun but they could have been a bit more competitive like in the first 3 games. The starts are too cheap (10 coins) and this can lead to easily rack up stars when they appear in convenient places right in front of the previous star for example. Overall i think it's definitely better game than most of the latest installments in the series but it feels short in content and it would benefit loads by added DLC content (especially game boards). A decent but flawed party game in the Mario Party series. It got a bit better after Nintendo updated it to support online play.

    PROS:

    - A boatload of minigames.
    - Accessible and fun.
    - Nice motion controls.

    CONS:

    - Just a few boards.
    - Requires one joy-con per player.
    - Nintendo didn't give it much support, and already replaced it with another Mario Party game on the Switch.

Weak and dissappointing, mostly due to few minigames being played in a standard game and a small selection of minigames.

The rhythm games section is the best part, and being able to play the tutorial for minigames without entering some kinda special practice mode is a great idea. Hope they use both in the next installment, where the game is actually fun.

Both players and critics agreed that in the last couple of years Mario Party’s quality has been dropping.
