For this game to return to the old formula, it has started great. If the future entries of the mario party franchise follow this then nintendo is heading in the right direction. It is a little boring for playing a long time at a time (2-3 hours) But i had a lot of fun when family came around and played this. It just needs more boards, mini-games etc

Love it! It's an amazing game!
I don't get why it's getting so much hate, it's clearly better than MP 1, 2, 4 and 7 (like duh)

at first the game seems great, but after 4 hours of gameplay you find out you have played all the boards. Nintendo is never going to make new dlc's - they have gotten greedy like with Mario kart Tour, and the games will show.... unfortunately.

Like seriously, its been almost a year, and they added nothing into this unfinished game, like seriously? There is only 4 tiny maps, and you dont have any options to customize your game

This game isn't bad, but it isn't good either. There are a very limited number of boards to play on, and the game itself feels largely luck based. There stars aren't even worth enough coins to make playing the minigames worthwhile. It's completely possible to lose every minigame and still win the overall game

I was kind of embarrassed to have this be my girlfriends first experience with the franchise, luckily the game idea itself is good enough to draw her i but we both feel the same. I also don't like how this version seems so scaled down from the good versions. Small dice rolls and coin amounts make it feel lame. Expand

The Mario Party format will always make it a favorite for friends gathering together. However this was one of the few Nintendo Switch games that I felt did not live up to its predecessors. This game does not add anything of significance new to the series, and offers a disappointing 4 total maps. This iteration feels like its missing a significant DLC update.

Actual fun mini games and fresh new ideas are what make the game enjoyable marking the first good mario party game in years. But main thing is shell shocked deluxe was added.

Be prepared for brainless NPC's, time wasting animations, but aight minigames. It can be fun to play with 3 other humans, but only for so long. My favorite is the minigame-only mode.

The game gets rid of the car formula ( thank goodness ) for classic mario party mixed with the party formula ftom star rush on the 3DS which is where this game shines. And the river survival sub game is good but with not al of minigames and boards mario party does get dull after a while. If dlc were added however this game could become a great party game Expand

The Modes are fun, and ill main the new Partner Party Mode, in this you play with a friend as a team, against an other 2 people team. I also liked the minigames, they are more competitive, and the fact that the allies mechanic since from N64 leaves me satisfied.
The Online is a great idea, but you can only play minigames online.
I still don't recommend you guys buy the Online service until Mario Maker 2.

SO...I GIVE THIS GAME A...well if you actually don't see the nine there...welp, I give a 9 out of 10

I actually think that this is better for a party gameplay, not a solo gameplay I mean, Mario party is meant to be for friends right?? well its written in the box "party".

Any ways, the solo gameplay is...kinda ok but is like...
is not too big the "story mode" its not certain type of a actual STORY MODE...you just need to play all modes, all maps and when you play all the maps in a mode you win a gem.
well I guess I gotta go...

I really enjoy the minigames, but it feels like Nintendo just focused on minigames, as the online mode and the thing that people bought the game for, the party mode, is very lacking.

In the online mode you can only play some minigames, you cannot play the party mode on online, which I can kind of see, but for the most part it doesn't make sense. I want to play some classic online Mario Party with some of my friends overseas, but it turns out I can only play minigames against them.

The party mode is also fairly lacking, as it only has 4 boards, is lacking in terms of dices, and the fact that you can simply buy an item to get you right beside a star makes the game really boring as a round is done in around 20 minutes.

A lot of the characters are also, strange, but the biggest problem I have about them is the fact that they have their own unique dices. None of the dices are even, in fact it is easy to see which dices are better than others, for example the Goompa is definitely better than Wario, and Rosalina is pretty much better than Donkey Kong.

At least it's better Mario Party 9-11, so there is that to it.

A decent but disappointing Mario Party game. The boards are meh, and there's only 4 of them. The game's items are also boring and it is too easy to get stars. The minigames are great though, and it does a better job at living up to the N64 Mario Party's than 10.

I was skipping the last Mario party games, because i was not enjoying the new direction Nintendo was taking on them. Thankfully for this one, they opted to sticky with the old (and best) N64 board formula. Sure, there's some other party modes apart from that, but honestly, the only thing I could care, is to play a Mario Party the way it's supposed to play. Not that we all move together on a s*** car!

Like previous games, this still sucks if you're going for single play. Just forget it if you don't have anyone to play with. Don't count on it as well if you're planning online play. That sucks too! It's limited to play a few mini-games and it's very laggy. However, if you could arrange 2 or 3 more friends to play with, that's another story, but still, I feel Nintendo could have done a bit better on this.

The mini-games are very good for the most part, but there's only 4 boards and I'm not sure about this compact format they have now, but that's not even my biggest complaint. I fell that now is too easy for anyone to get stars, it only cost 10 coins (instead of 20 from previous games) and even players who didn't get the first place on mini-games receives coins. That's a bit unfair to players who strive the most to win mini-games. Also, each board match takes longer than before, damaging the match pace. Mostly because of the overdone characters animations. From simple actions like rolling the dice to Toaddete (who is now the star keeper) taking foverer to move to one place to another. Everything moves so slow! Also you cannot skip cpu actions. Why making us watch the whole sequence of the cpu talking to the shop seller? It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it really damages the match flow.

Thankfully, it's something really easy to fix on a DLC. If Nintendo does it, I will upgrade my score to an 8, maybe 9 if they add more boards to it.

In conclusion, it's still not the perfect Mario Party we were hoping for, but that's the right way. Never get rid again from the N64 formula. Never!

First Ill list the positives. There are some cool mini games, the dice rolling system is kind of fun, the graphics are good. But thats about it.

Stars are super easy to get, hardly an accomplishment, and with the big dice rolls and small levels you can some times get 2 stars in a round. Other games had a little more skill element, this one feels a lot more luck based. Coins feel a lot less valued, in regards to bonus stars, there is no Coin star or reward for saving coins. You can ONLY use joy cons, which honestly sucks. Many of the games use tilt controls, which sometimes fun, but often times frustrating and messy. There arent a lot of stages. The alternate game modes are fun maybe the first time around but are not rewarding in the slightest. Theres maybe ONE thing is this game to unlock. Why! Like give me a reason to keep playing. What really bothers me is no story mode. I get it, mario party is a party game, but this game has ZERO value played a lone, where as some of the older games in the series had single player modes that I really enjoyed.

Honestly this is a good game, if you're a baby. But i'd rather play any mario party from mario party 1-6. This game isn't trash, but its not worth the hefty price tag. I think mario kart, or the jack box party pack, or mario vs rabbids, would be a better muitiplayer/party game than this.

There are too few maps... I want alot more than 4 maps considering the price of this game. The maps given are too small. You cannot see characters special dices when choosing characters which make the game entirely unbalanced. Since every character has a specific dice... some are ALOT better than others which again only advanced players would know. The partner mechanic... which makes it so that you get a partner on the board, additional dice roles and sometime help in mini games makes the game excessively unbalanced. The prices of stars are too low (10 coins instead of 20) making it so that it is too easy for the lead character to get mulp stars. Despite the amazing looking maps, and fun mini games... the unbalanced problems outweighs the good... this is a poorly thought out game! Expand

Challenging and Interesting board game levels? Nope, each of the 4 total boards was lacking depth and imagination. The very last board game for example, runs in such a small loop that everyone gets a star and there's no chance whatsoever as to how the session will end up. There is no strategy in this game, it's all pure luck. What I enjoyed about the previous board games, was the inspiration they took from the Super Mario Universe. This one was all about banality and cookie cutter cliches.

Mini Games? Yeah they were not too bad, but nothing really that special. I missed the cut throat nature of the previous mini games. This one's a bit too family friendly. The biggest sin of this game is that they force you to use the mini controllers per player from the switch - which really ruins the entire experience of the game. There is no option to use a full size controller.

Replayability? zero - see board game gripe above.

Overall, this felt like a money grab from Nintendo. I expect quality when I play a Nintendo game, and this one really fell short. To add to this, I can't understand why anyone is rating this highly, I would put this up there with Bethesda's failing with Fallout 76. Don't buy this game, it's not even worth $20.00 They should have called it "Below Average Mario Party".

Super Mario Party goes back to its roots and delivers just like it should. The vast number of different modes, really prevents any to shine the brightest, but the entire game is a small step back that greatly leaps forward. It makes us only more excited for the next entry. Both players and critics agreed that in the last couple of years Mario Party’s quality has been dropping. Nintendo decided to go for broke this time and I hope slapping “Super” in front of the title heralds the restart of the franchise, because SMP finally delivers what we expected. [12/2018, p.51]

Complex and unpredictable board game, numerous mini-games and being able to play as your favorite character – those are the three pillars of Mario Party’s success. Neither of these elements was polished to perfection over the years, but together they offer a very enjoyable experience. [Issue#234, p.72]
