Really fixed the series. Things are back to the way they should have always stayed. But more than that it has made the game more skill based, by making the dice have lower numbers and special numbers. Each turn has an important decision to make about where you will likely land.

Best Mario Party game I've ever played (I've played Mario Party and Mario Party 2). There is a nice balance of skill and luck when it comes to determining the winner. Very welcoming to newcomers and veterans alike. The online component could be expanded, but what's currently there is a nice add-on. Pro-controller support would be a nice addition in a future update. This game is veryBest Mario Party game I've ever played (I've played Mario Party and Mario Party 2). The game really gets your heart beating and makes you forget about all the stress at the back of your head and it's just simple to teach people who are new to Mario Party how to play. The first Mario Party game I got was Mario Party 8 for the Wii, but many years later I find myself buying this game. I may sound biased towards Nintendo but that's because I grew up in a Nintendo household and Nintendo takes up half of my childhood, and they make original titles and creative new ways to play. Great game! I recommend this to people who are having family troubles or getting back together with longtime friends.

It made no sense all four characters could move at the same time on the same path, it gets out any kind of strategy you can have and just that, a boring thing (yes, I am talking about that ****** car).

Apart from that, there are much more characters to select from and more game modes than ever before. The only thing I would put as a 'con' is that just 4 simple maps like those ones are not enough, but let's hope future games can change this.

The new personal dice mechanic is outstanding, gives so much perspective to the game. Of course it seems like some dice are stronger than other, but that depends on the map and mode you are playing. The only turn down for me is the lack of maps, 4 doesn't seem enough and I am hoping for more in the future. The maps are much smaller, which I am having mixed feelings about, it's definitely not bad, there is so much going on with each turn, so many stars acquired. When I first saw that 20 turns is the max on most maps I felt that it will be too casual again, but they are trying to deliver a new dynamic, which I believe was a hard job to do and I can surely say they did well. 1-2 hours per game feels more than enough. I can't even describe how much I love the allies, another entirely new mechanic we are getting in MP. Then again, we have partner party, for the first time ever I am enjoying playing doubles. In the past it felt just like they are eliminating the 1v3 games, but now there is so much strategy involved, you can combine dice combos for better movement or income. And last but not least the river survival. For the first time a fully cooperative mode for all 4 people, each and every one of the co op games is a lot of fun. The river itself it's easy to beat, but nevertheless it's fun. Ready.... YEAH!
People are complaining about online mode being restricted only to minigames. Are you serious people? This is the first MP that even has online mode, maybe they will add more in the future. This new game has offered so much in one title, not like any other so far. My final thoughts on this game is that as I said, this is the first good mario party we are getting since 7, it's been 13 long years. I can easily say this Mario Party is in the TOP 5 of the franchise, maybe even TOP 3.

It's not perfect, but I've owned and played all the console Mario Partys - and this is the best one. It really is the most accessible, and the graphics are gorgeous. Mini Games are mostly great, some stellar ones, some that are a little meh, but always lots of laughs in the room for each.

Any ways, the solo gameplay is...kinda ok but is like...
is not too big the "story mode" its not certain type of a actual STORY MODE...you just need to play all modes, all maps and when you play all the maps in a mode you win a gem.

The river rafting and music modes are a lot of fun as well. My main complaints are the lack luster single player mods (beat it in 2 hours) and I was hoping for more from the shop. I love earning little extras for playing, and I was super excited to see 7 or 8 different categories of things I can buy, but when I unlocked all of the categories, there were really only 3 categories split up into sections. I (and many others from what I can tell) prefer this style of gameplay to the 'all moving in a vehicle' from Mario Parties 9 and 10. The other modes are nice additions too, and really take advantage of the Switch's versatility.

However, on the other hand, you're forced to use a single Joy-Con controller for each player. If you want to play Super Mario Party in handheld mode, with a Pro Controller, or with two Joy-Con via the Joy-Con Grip, you're out of luck. Since I find holding single Joy-Con awkward, this was a let-down for me, despite the many ways the controller is used (it's too small to play with comfortably in my opinion).

Still, control issues/limitations aside, Super Mario Party is a welcome return to form. It seems that fewer (if any) minigames this time are luck-based, which is a plus for me (I prefer games to be more skill-oriented).

Would be a great game to play with friends, if they don't mind the arguably awkward controls.

If you're a fan of Mario Party games then this is one of the best installments in this storied franchise and will not disappoint. If you're looking for a game loaded with dumb fun that's made to be played with friends then you could do a lot worse than this especially when it eventually goes on sale. And with the addition of a 2v2 coop mode, a first for this series, this makes for a great date night game for anyone out there looking for something to play with your plus one! Me and my wife have been enjoying this every evening since this came out, and seeing as we haven't filed for divorce yet I'd say this game is getting this mode right! Expand

Ever since the infamous fall that is Mario Party 9, the series has not seen stable ground for a while. All this is my personal opinion, but 10 attempted to give 9's gameplay another chance, but that still fell short. Island Tour was a stranger turn for the series that still felt weak in my eyes. Star Rush was a step in the right direction and lasted longer than the other three and the Top 100 was a nostalgic rush that was executed rather poorly. So what of Super Mario Party? Where does that stand? Hopefully my thoughts help with that.

Let's start with the gameplay... it's finally back. They have finally done away with the car and brought back the individual moving turns with coin collecting and star hunting. I'm sure this is what fans have been waiting for. And I for one did indeed enjoy it. I've played a few matches of the main game and I did thoroughly enjoy myself and the friends I played with can say the same. While I did love the Top 100, this is the first core, home console game I've fully enjoyed since Mario Party 8 and that alone boosts my spirits. The gameplay is there, but is is a bit simpler than the first 8 core titles. There is the game's own unique spaces, such as Ally Spaces, but outside of that, the basics are mostly the only other things; Blue and Red for coins, Happening for events, Item for items and Lucky/Unlucky spaces for a bit of random spice. I can't fault this simple approach, even if I myself prefer the diversity of the originals. But Super Mario Party also does one thing that only one other title has ever done; the character you play as has a much bigger impact on the game. In a similar vein to Mario Party 7's Character Capsules and identically to Star Rush, each character has their own dice block, each with a different variety of faces that can either move you farther than a normal dice block, not move you at all or give/take away coins. There's a bit more strategy to dice rolls and even if the character has a bad looking dice, it can still be useful under the right circumstances. My only true gripe with the mode is the lack of boards. There are only four, two less than the average game. And the boards themselves are very small, small enough that, with a stacked team of allies, someone can cover half the board in a turn and get multiple stars if they're lucky. It feels a bit too compacted in my opinion, but it's still fun if you have a nice group to play with.

The mini-games are the next topic and they do a great job of showcasing what the Joy-Cons can do. I didn't play 1-2 Switch, but I feel this game trumps it without even lifting a finger. The games can rely on motion controls, standard button inputs or even the Joy-Con's rumble features, which are a bit more unique, even compared to the GameCube titles. They are a great set of mini-games and while I haven't played all of them, the ones I have played are pretty great.

Sadly I haven't played many modes outside of the main party so I can't say much there. I may expand on this review later on when I have. But for now, Super Mario Party is the step the series has desperately needed. Perfect? I wouldn't say that, but it's fun in it's own unique way and is still a great improvement from the previous titles. Perhaps in the future, Nintendo will fully go back to the expansive style of the first 8 games, but for now, I can safely say this is another series Nintendo has improved upon. Super Mario Party is straight up fun and I'm glad I can say that. And in my eyes, there's only one franchise left that can use a proper fixing. Paper Mario, here's hoping you're next.

It's a good game. Not so many mini-games, boards... really tiny (the stars moves often really close to the character who took the star just before).
But it works, all ppl i've played with are full of joy, laughing, asking to continue to play; even sometimes refusing to play at first and loving it ! It's really nice game but not much more.

I guess my only complaint is that there's only 4 boards. I can see our gaming group plowing through those rather quickly, so I hope DLC is on it's way to enhance the selection. Then I could easily give this game a 9.

I think Nintendo should make Mario characters for this game like how Rosalina was made for Mario Galaxy. I thought Pom Pom should of had Boom Boom also side her in the game but whatever. The boards for me were two small and simplistic. I do like the Beach and Mine boards but the last board is honestly so boring for me. The items were not even enough and some of the items you couldn't get unless you landed on a item space. The red space count was low, and the battle system was kinda dumb to be honest. Also the bad luck spaces were lame and weren't a good substitute for Bowser Spaces. The mini games were amazing as usual. I found that a lot of them were enjoyable and very creative. I felt that the developers of this game spent about an equal amount of time on all 5 modes because it didn't feel like Mario Party was the main mode of this game, it felt the popular mode instead. I know that Nintendo saw the reception of this game and definitely we will be seeing a great Super Mario Party 2. Expand

Sure, not all of them are masterpieces, but I never really felt like any of them were that bad. A complaint I see often about this game is that there are only 4 maps, and I agree with it to a point but it never really mattered to me. If you like a lot of variety in your maps, don’t expect a lot from this. The regular party is great and all, but where the game really shines is with the other modes. River Survival is only a LOT of fun when playing with friends, but otherwise not that bad. Partner Party is great because you have a lot more freedom in where you move around the map and it’s just pure party fun. You’ll have a great time playing this one with friends. Challenge Road is probably my favorite, you complete all 80 minigames with a certain objective to complete (I.e. complete this in 10 seconds, beat the rival team) and it even includes an expert mode once finished with the normal mode. Now it’s time to talk criticism. The only reason I gave this game an 8 out of 10 instead of a 9 or a perfect 10 is because of the Online Mariothon. You can only play about 10 of the minigames and in its current state it is unplayable. There are way more than 10 4 player minigames and it even would’ve been nice to add in a few of the 2v2 or 1v3 minigames. But besides that, I was happy with my purchase, and I would recommend any Switch owner to get this game. Expand

The "history mode" to say it like that it's no big deal but that's not the focal point on this kind of game so it's just nice for Nintendo to put it there.

Since I didn’t play MP Star Rush and MP: The Top 100 I was really excited to get this game. The first trailer already looked promising, because the system of the older games returned.

Though I like the idea of having this small hub area, where you can choose which game mode you want to play, it feels a bit empty. But I’m a big fan of hub areas, which evolve through progression. It is a nice touch, that the more crystals you collect, the day goes by and the music gets more intense. There are more than enough playable characters and it’s nice to have bowser’s minions also included.

Except for some new mechanics, you can say that the mario party mode is the one from the older games. But there are still some things, which bother me. Overall this mode was pretty cool and fun to play, but like many people already mentioned, 4 boards are a bit too few and the board themselves are too small. With some good luck and some partners you can almost run through the whole board in one turn. I don’t have a problem with the individual dice every character has, but they aren’t really balanced. The partners are in my opinion a bit too powerful, since you get a 1-2 added to your count for every partner in your team. Another problem I have with this mode is the amount of coins you get during a party. Even if you lose a 2v2 minigame you still get 2 coins. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the stars only cost 10 coins. So you almost have no chance of missing a star, because of the huge amount of coins you are given. Not even the shop is more expensive. You can get a golden pipe, which brings you directly in front of the star, for 10 coins only. Also, the lucky and unlucky fields seem to be a bit useless, since the events that can happen aren’t that fascinating. The chance of landing on an unlucky field already is pretty low and the chance of losing a star there is even lower. Otherwise the boards are well made. Every board has its unique theme and special events, where you can get coins or stars. For the most time the soundtrack is also pretty good.

The rafting mode is pretty cool, but they could have added some more minigames, because they get repetitive after playing some rounds.

The partner party uses the mechanic of star rush, which isn’t necessarily bad. The concept is fun, but, like in the normal mario party, it’s almost impossible to land on an unlucky field, because you can easily land on an item or lucky field almost every time.

Sadly, the online mode was a big disappointment. Instead of playing a normal mario party you can only play a total amount of ten minigames and that’s it.

The minigames were overall enjoyable. 80 minigames is an acceptable amount in my opinion, even if there could have been some more rafting minigames. The minigames, which uses the HD Rumble, work almost perfectly and are really cool.

To conclude, this game isn't perfect, but it’s one step closer to the right direction. It’s definitely better than MP 9 and MP 10, that’s for sure.

Mario Party matches tend to last 1 hour or longer so if someone quits out it can ruin the rest of the game or end it but at the same time you could just replace a quitter with a computer. You add computers playing locally anyway. For the local play I give the game a 10 but the fact that it misses what is, for me, a long awaited feature in the series I rank it a 8. Truly disappointing that there isn't full play online. Expand

A true return to what made this series so great, oh, so long ago. With fun boards and fantastic mini-games, the real Mario Party 8 is here, and it doesn't disappoint.

I've so far enjoyed Super Mario Party to a massive degree. There is nothing really holding it back from being a success in my eyes, after all I've acumulated 135 hours of this game because I enjoy playing this game with my Dad.It does get repetitive and I wish there were more boards, they are already quite small and it worsens the experience when there is only 4 boards. Also online is pretty terrible , only giving you minigames to play but no parties. Don't get me wrong this is still a good game at heart ( at least better than Mario Party: Island Tour, Mario Party: The Top 100, and Mario party: ds). Expand

Super Mario Party kinda falls short when it comes to the creativity (and number) of boards.

However, the minigames are refreshing, it's very hard to keep on going after so many iterations of this franchise and still come up with new, fun ideas for minigames. It's very enjoyable to play with friends.

Super Mario Party wants to renew the saga which since 2013 has been fumbling a little bit on the rails, wanting to be more focused on cooperation than competition, this opus stands out with lots of nice game modes but forgetting a little the content of the fundamentals.

A gigantic improvement from the last few Mario Party games from 9 up to The Top 100. The original concept is kind of almost back. The minigames were also a lot more entertaining. There was also some fun modes outside of the main course. The roster also have a variety of characters to play as without being too repetitive. There are a few let downs though, first, there’s only 4 game boards in both the Team Party and Mario Party modes. The Power Stars cost is too low and should have been a way to increase the price for difficulty or turn purposes. The Bonus Stars at the end aren’t as special as they were too. But there’s always one thing that will always be entertaining. A minigame called Slaparazzi. Where you take pictures of beating up your favorite (maybe even least favorite) Mario characters. And of course you can use them for meme pictures if they were taken at the right moment. Expand

The minigames are amazing, it reuses the old formula where you collect coins and buy stars, the graphics are beautiful and the music is great. It's on the same level as 5 and 8. One of the best Mario Party games I've ever played. Expand

Super Mario Party goes back to its roots and delivers just like it should. The vast number of different modes, really prevents any to shine the brightest, but the entire game is a small step back that greatly leaps forward. It makes us only more excited for the next entry. Something we haven't felt with the Mario Party series in ages...

Both players and critics agreed that in the last couple of years Mario Party’s quality has been dropping. Nintendo decided to go for broke this time and I hope slapping “Super” in front of the title heralds the restart of the franchise, because SMP finally delivers what we expected. [12/2018, p.51]

Complex and unpredictable board game, numerous mini-games and being able to play as your favorite character – those are the three pillars of Mario Party’s success. Neither of these elements was polished to perfection over the years, but together they offer a very enjoyable experience. [Issue#234, p.72]
