    FULL REVIEW:
I’ve never played a party game. Due to my long-time connection to Nintendo, however, I wanted to give the Mario Party franchise a shot. Luckily, Super Mario Party offers a solid refresh to the series. The title’s primary game mode includes five boards in total, and while they are all linear, its only goal is to use coins and obtain stars, the winning currency. Each playable character comes with a unique dice block, and despite some blocks being less useful than others, it doesn’t affect gameplay too much. After each round of turns rolling the dice, players must compete in a minigame, earning them coins to use towards stars depending on where they finish. After ten to twenty rounds, a player is chosen as the victor after the game supplies star freebies to whoever struggles to get them throughout the game. In its defense, it makes the family-friendly gameplay much more forgiving if you are inexperienced or have bad luck. However, it does remain an annoyance to more experienced players.

Super Mario Party also includes a few other game modes. River Survival is a co-op mode where four players get as far as possible in a riverboat before the timer runs out. Players increase their timer by completing minigames. Partner Party has two sets of two players on nonlinear versions of the Mario Party’s boards. It makes sense, as it's essentially the same game mode but instead focusing on teamwork. Sound Stage is a rhythm game, Challenge Road is a single-player mode similar to one found in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, and Toad’s Rec Room includes some minigames that look similar to a few from Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics. Lastly, Free Play, Mariothon, and Square Off all focus on minigames in their own ways. One of the issues with Mario Party seems to be redundancy, and I’m not sure if it’s good or bad.

Unfortunately, Super Mario Party does come with some issues. The lowest number of rounds in the primary game mode takes about an hour to finish, making it difficult to play if someone’s under a time crunch. The prerequisites for each locked character are rather ominous because of what players must do to unlock them, which the game never explicitly hints at. I find it surprising because of its family-friendly nature, causing the title’s long-term gameplay to become more time-consuming than enjoyable. Many locked characters in Nintendo’s games unlock simply by playing them, and Super Mario Party decided to go in a different direction. While the title is a great party and minigame experience, it includes some avoidable flaws that need ironing out.

Instead of blindlessly picking Yoshi every game, you think about the board layout and whether your character's dice will help you on the way. Each dice block is perfectly balanced (except for Daisy's and Donkey Kong's) and provides for a strategic take that refines the gameplay. Plus, though many shrugged them off as 'meh they're fine', the minigames are FANTASTIC, and even better than Mario Parties 4, 5, 9, 10 and Superstar's excellent ones (My favourite being Fuzzy Flight School). However if you're not looking to play the boards over and over and want to face some other new challenges, Mario opens his gloved palm and offers you a buncha more fun side modes, but I won't spoil it for you. If you like Mario Party, or you want to be the attractive guy who pulls out a Switch OLED, Joy-Cons and a copy of this game from your pocket, this is a must play.

No.1 choice for party game. No others games can warm up the party like this dude do. The brilliant game design along with clever adoption of joy-cons really makes it a damn good party game.

It might not be rich in contents and might not be suitable for single players. But it is perfect for parties.

To some people these drawbacks is a huge deal, but on my case, I have a family at home that can pick this game and enjoy altogether in front of a TV without any problems playing 80 mini-games using the single joy con per player. It is still very much a fun party game and not bad at all, it really depends on your situation; so if you live alone and prefers to use pro-controller then definitely this game is not for you.

It is an extremely rare scenario that you wont have 10 coins at any point during the game. You'll almost never be in a scenario where you make it to a star and can't afford one.

This in turn makes minigames trivial. Since the value of a coin is next to nothing now, the importance of actually winning minigames to earn coins plummets. The main appeal of Mario party now has little to no relevance to the board game.

In previous installations of the series the game required a combination of minigame prowess, coin management, and a little bit of luck. Now the game requires little more than praying to RNGesus so you can stamepede around collecting as many stars as you can; limited by nothing more than your ability to roll high numbers. Previously this wasn't a viable strategy because you needed to ensure you had 20 coins before passing over a star.

Example, after coming in 3rd place in the first mini-game, I bought a star on turn 2. In another game on turn 5, after losing every single mini-game, and rolling 1s. I used items and rolled a 15. I earned 3 stars in a single turn, buying 2 stars in one turn, and getting one from a hidden block. Boards are tiny and there are no interesting tiles to land on. All the usable items are lackluster. Mini-games are solid however.

Normally buying two stars in a single turn would require some form of achievement. This is not the case in Super Mario Party. As far as I'm concerned this game is just the participation trophy of the franchise.

Joy cons, terrible terrible controllers that get drift in a matter of months which eliminates the only usable controller for this game, thank goodness Mario party super stars uses pro controllers. Birdo was still missing but luckily she came back for Superstars. I like that each character has their own unique dice block, which can influence what character you want to choose. The minigames are mostly fun with some of my favourites being Sizzling Stakes, Trip Navigator and Pie Hard (love that name). I do like that you can practice minigames on the control screen now which is a nice feature. Now the negatives, There are only four boards in this game! That is far too low and on top of that none of them are even that good. That alone brings the score down a lot. Stars only cost 10 coins now instead of 20 which is a downgrade from before. The side modes in this game were fine but they get boring after a while, like River Survival and Sound Stage. And they kinda take away from the focus of the main game. They finally introduced an online mode for Mario Party but they took way too long to add it when it should have been there from the beginning. This game is an upgrade from the ones ND Cube made before this, but still not nearly as good as the classic Mario Party games. If they had focused more on adding more boards and less on the side modes, it could have been better. Luckily we got Superstars afterwards which made up for it! Expand

A decent but flawed party game in the Mario Party series. It got a bit better after Nintendo updated it to support online play.

    PROS:

    - A boatload of minigames.
    - Accessible and fun.
    - Nice motion controls.

    CONS:

    - Just a few boards.
    - Requires one joy-con per player.
    - Nintendo didn't give it much support, and already replaced it with another Mario Party game on the Switch.

    5/10.

Pre release had hyped this up as a more return to the original formula i.e. no cars (didn't even bother playing those) but couldn't have been further from the truth. This turned out to be a a major disappointment for various reasons as many other people have noted in reviews.

    - There's only 4 boards. These 4 boards can barely be considered boards as they have a small grid like structure. It's almost as they tried doing some kind of grid like formula, scratched it, and said well heres 4 let's make it work. They are painfully pathetic, aesthetically and playability.

-Economy is bad. Stars are now 10 coins reduced from 20 of the original. Everyone gets coins from mini games also.

-Golden warp pipe is broke. This ties in with last point but a golden pipe is 10 coins which can be farmed to buy over and over and then buy 10 coin star. Don't remember much of the other items but not good.

-Dice block only goes to 6. No idea why they would change this but I'm sure it has to do with tiny boards for making this decision.

-Ally characters also impede flow of game. If someone gets one, two, three or even four, (don't know how many you can get) they are able to lap the entire board it makes no sense. Now had they done it where you get an ally and can use their special dice ability, that would have been fine as that idea is the only decent new addition to the game. But it doesn't work that way they roll extra dice on the turn allowing for more travel on the tiny maps with broken economy.

-Online support was a joke. This made it sound like, and I'm sure most people agree, that online meant you could play the maps online with others. Not the case of-course. You're allowed to compete in FIVE mini games online to see who wins.

    - And my least favorite I saved for last, motion controls & Joy Con. This is the worst aspect in that you cannot use the pro controller or even two joy cons. You have to use one joy con but it gets worse...there's motion control. I hated that about the Wii (least favorite NINTENDO console ever) but now you have to give high fives and other motion BS. Don't get me started on the motion control specific modes I'm sure as F*** not getting up pretending I'm in a marching band.

And there you have it for reasons that ruin the game. But why 4 /10? Well, realistically I'm sure some kids and people out there will enjoy so even though I overall don't like it, I can see where some may enjoy it. Especially kids who never played originals. As an adult who grew up on the originals and probably too old for my age to be playing Mario party (F*** it) there's bound to be some young kids or dumb adults who will enjoy it. I, however, would not recommend this Mario Party.

However, the minigames are refreshing, it's very hard to keep on going after so many iterations of this franchise and still come up with new, fun ideas for minigames. It's very enjoyable to play with friends.

This is by far the worst Mario Party to date. NDcube shows no idea of the direction the franchise is going, and at this point I don't care if they want to change the formula or stick to the original one, but for the love of god, they NEED to commit to a direction instead of delivering this half assed attempt at OG Mario Party.

Only redeeming qualities are the graphics quality, and the potential fun the side modes can provide during the first times you play them.

There are a few let downs though, first, there’s only 4 game boards in both the Team Party and Mario Party modes. The Power Stars cost is too low and should have been a way to increase the price for difficulty or turn purposes. The Bonus Stars at the end aren’t as special as they were too. Super Mario Party is a party game – a digital board game that is also a collection of minigames, as well as a few other modes that are also, in effect, collections of minigames, such as the cooperative River Race as well as the Sound Stage area, which is a party rhythm game.

The board game is the “heart” of Super Mario Party, and here, there are actually two closely related board games.

The board game is the “heart” of Super Mario Party, and here, there are actually two closely related board games. The objective of each game is to collect stars, but there are two ways to play – as single players, and two teams of two. The individual player mode has you moving around a fairly linear board with a few branching paths, while the team mode has you moving around on a rectangular board with various features interrupting the flow through the board. In either case, your goal is to get enough coins and then to land on the star space, which allows you to buy a star, which then causes the star to move afterwards to a new location.

This mode is chaotic but reasonably okay. There’s some strategy involved – each character has special dice, which can be rolled instead of a normal six-sided die, with various dice giving less random results or more extreme results (Bowser, for example, has a die with 0, 0, 1, 8, 9, and 10 on it, while Shy Guy has 0, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4), but as the rolls are random, there’s only so much control you have over where you land. Various spaces have various effects, and while you can control what area of the board you’re aiming for, you have no guarantee of actually landing on critical spaces. The team game gives you a bit more control, as the players roll dice and have them added together to determine the team’s movement, and the board gives you more control over where you’re going. There are allies around the board (player characters who you aren’t playing as), which can give you additional movement as well as access to their dice. The team mode gives you more control over getting these, but both modes give you at least some access to them.

The minigames are ultimately at the heart of the game, and are where players make most of their coins. Some of these have the players competing against each other as individuals, while others have them paired randomly into teams (sometimes with your allied characters following you around a well!). These games are much more skill-based, which is both a good thing (more skilled players have an advantage) and a bad thing (it’s entirely possible for better players to literally never lose at the minigames).

All in all, this is an okay game, but it’s nothing particularly special; I wouldn’t play it very much, and it isn’t worth the asking price of $60.

The Sound Stage mode is a pretty generic rhythm game with Mario theming, which is cute enough, but very limited in scope.

The River Cruise mode has you paddling a raft down a river as a team while completing a series of team minigames against the clock to try and get more time. This mode is actually really easy, so while it is kind of nice to cooperate as a group, you’re going to succeed every time, which means that repeated trips can get boring after a while, especially as there isn’t all that much variety in what the actual river trip brings.

Finally, there’s Challenge Road, where you play through all 80 minigames back to back to try and get to the end of it. You can quit whenever you want and come back to it, but it is still nothing particularly exciting or special.

All in all, Super Mario Party is what it is – a mediocre party game. It is chaotic enough to create some potentially interesting moments, but ironically, the minigames may be *too* skill based, making it less random and thus making me wonder whether it’d be better to just play a game like Super Smash Bros. or Super Mario Kart, which are more fun as actual *games*.

If you can rent this from the local library for some short term dumb fun, that’s not a bad choice, but I can’t really say this would be worth buying – if you play it much at all on your own, you’ll get too good at the minigames to really be able to play it as a fun party game. The game itself is rather repetitive, so it isn’t something you want to play a ton of, and after about 17 hours or so, you’ll have seen literally everything the game has to offer many times over.

The reason that I'm giving this game a 0 is that I've never seen a boardgame that solely depends on such skill (because of the minigames). The game itself revolves around coins. And the minigames are the game changer. Also the cpu's are the worst teammates in group based minigames, the cpu's programming is awful.

    1. There are ONLY FOUR BOARDS! I remember playing Mario Party games on Game Cube that had way more variety. That was a decade ago. Given the advancement in technology, there should be MORE boards, not less.

    2. You can't play boards online. Not even with your friends in a private match. Instead you are forced to play a small set of mini-games, over and over again. I bought a Nintendo Online Subscription specifically for this game when it came out. I cancelled it after a month.

    3. So many features in this game just seem poorly balanced. Numerous items are completely useless to buy, while others are over-powered. Stars are waaay too cheap. After only a couple turns, there isn't even a risk of not being able to afford one. The random mini-game wheel seems to heavily favour playing the same games over-and-over again. Certain characters' dice are just awful compared to others.

I can't believe Nintendo is still selling this lackluster game for full price. It's been out for almost two years, and despite many complaints, they haven't updated it at all.

But surprisingly there is a single player and it’s a cool edition, it shows you all the amazing minigames in this game, the minigames are a perfect selection they even reward you with unique stickers very cool. Super Mario Party is a Mario Party game i've been waiting for since Mario Party 9 came out. Starting off with the characters I thought that Nintendo did a good job incorporating default, returning, and new characters into the game. Toad, Toadette, and Kamek should of been in the game. I think Nintendo should make Mario characters for this game like how Rosalina was made for Mario Galaxy. I thought Pom Pom should of had Boom Boom also side her in the game but whatever. The boards for me were two small and simplistic. I do like the Beach and Mine boards but the last board is honestly so boring for me. The items were not even enough and some of the items you couldn't get unless you landed on a item space. The red space count was low, and the battle system was kinda dumb to be honest. Also the bad luck spaces were lame and weren't a good substitute for Bowser Spaces. The mini games were amazing as usual. I found that a lot of them were enjoyable and very creative. I felt that the developers of this game spent about an equal amount of time on all 5 modes because it didn't feel like Mario Party was the main mode of this game, it felt the popular mode instead. I know that Nintendo saw the reception of this game and definitely we will be seeing a great Super Mario Party 2. Expand

Hope you like repetitive bs, on the fewest boards in the series, in a game that has received no updates or support! It's super!

It doesn't matter how well you play everything is left to chance and I have the worst luck.... This game is stressful for no good reason -10/10

Great party game, played it regularly in the beginning, later not so much. River mode is mostly played at our house. Would benefit from more content

Really fun gamer to play with friends and family. I always have a blast with it. can't complain about that. But I wish it had more boards, characters and mini games to play. You get tired of same 4 Boards super fast. Mini games are fun and use the HD rumble and gyro control on the Joy cons very very well. One of the best party games for the switch no doubt !

It's Mario Party and IMO it's the best in the franchise. Personally, I hem and haw over how high to rate this game. Mario Party matches tend to last 1 hour or longer so if someone quits out it can ruin the rest of the game or end it but at the same time you could just replace a quitter with a computer. You add computers playing locally anyway. For the local play I give the game a 10 but the fact that it misses what is, for me, a long awaited feature in the series I rank it a 8. Truly disappointing that there isn't full play online. Expand

Es un juego muy divertido perfecto para pasar el tiempo con los amigos o con la familia, sobre todo con los más peques, lo único que considero que le falta es un modo historia algo así como el de DS

A lot of potential, poorly executed. Too little content, small boards and few game modes.

I did over play it when it first released; I believe coming back to it and playing it a year later, the biggest thing that sticks out to me, negatively, would be a lack of boards. Although, it is definitely a fun party game played in small bursts. The controls work well and the motion related controls tend to work most of the time.

Super Mario Party goes back to its roots and delivers just like it should. The vast number of different modes, really prevents any to shine the brightest, but the entire game is a small step back that greatly leaps forward. It makes us only more excited for the next entry. Something we haven't felt with the Mario Party series in ages...

Both players and critics agreed that in the last couple of years Mario Party’s quality has been dropping. Nintendo decided to go for broke this time and I hope slapping “Super” in front of the title heralds the restart of the franchise, because SMP finally delivers what we expected. [12/2018, p.51]

Complex and unpredictable board game, numerous mini-games and being able to play as your favorite character – those are the three pillars of Mario Party’s success. Neither of these elements was polished to perfection over the years, but together they offer a very enjoyable experience. [Issue#234, p.72]
