This combo is amazing, some of my favorite Mario games ever, but the lack of creativity is terrible. Nintendo basically did nothing new. Cameras are the same, no new hidden stuff, they even removed some of the awesome glitches in Mario 64 that Nintendo knew we all liked. Also, why is this game limited edition? There was no reason to do this. They just want people to rampage over on EBay. IThis combo is amazing, some of my favorite Mario games ever, but the lack of creativity is terrible. I feel like people are dogging a little hard because of the lack of extra content. They said we would get three legendary titles and we got three legendary titles. You can't fix what's not broken so I don't see the problem. (No excuse for Mario 64's lack of widescreen, c'mon Nintendo.)

I have to say, I was quite disappointed with Super Mario 3D All-Stars. While it was great to have three classic Mario games in one package, the overall experience just didn't live up to my expectations. Awful collection. I rate 5 ONLY because I never played any of these in the past, it would be like 1 otherwise.

This collection contains nothing new. Nintendo just took three random games it thinks they are "breakthroughs" in the franchise history, put them into one game and that's pretty much it. I understand they didn't modify these games in order to preserve their "magic" and age, but

They SHOULD HAVE improved the horrendous controls of Super Mario 64. The controls are so garbage it's unplayable. Swimming underwater is a literal nightmare. Bad camera makes the games two times as hard than they are.

This mess of a game proves that Nintendo made this game only to milk some extra money.

    Nota: 8/10

If you take something like Crash, he had 3 of his games, but they were remastered. Now I understand that Nintendo can't remaster the games, and that's ok, but Crash was only $40, but $60. I will say the smaller updates to the games are so dumb, Mario 64 got sightly better graphics, Sunshine got a wider screen, which makes no sense, and can't the others do the same, and I forgot about Galaxy. Overall this game isn't garbage, but other games truly do the classic games they were trying to be back justice, like Crash. Expand

The only good part of Sunshine is the music, the creation of Bowser Jr. and E. Gadd references. Mario galaxy barely has any good music and all of the new characters are rubbish. Mario 64, as usual, knocks the music out of the park, the low poly graphics are very charming and some of the enemies introduced here are great too! I do wish there was a way to view all of the artwork outside of the loading screens though, and the soundtrack/ jukebox section is a nice addition. Both 64 and Sunshine felt terrible too control. They don't come close to nowadays standards. For everybody who is not completely blinded by nostalgia: They are not worth your time or money. I know that there are millions of people who will argue that they are objectively 10/10 masterpieces, but that's just because most of them played them when they came out and hold on to the nostalgic feelings. I don't want to say that that is bad, I'm glad that you can enjoy them. They are just nothing for people who didn't play them as kids, while titles like "Super Mario 3" are still good and playable for youngsters.
Mario 64 has terrible controls. They feel really slippery and weird, and it's hard to say where Mario will be next and what comes next. I don't know why people keep saying that the controls are precise, because they are not. And then you get to the water level, and it gets even worse. Even the wing cap is hard to control, for some reason it steers down regularly. You don't exactly feel "free" when you are constantly wrestling with the controls and the camera. The graphics are hideous too. And you constantly get knocked out of levels, sometimes for beating a challenge, and sometimes for dying.
Even without all those obnoxious stuff that could easily be fixed, Mario 64 is simply not as revolutionary as it used to be. If you remade the game with Odyssey graphics and quality of life upgrades, you would still just have a mediocre game. All of 64 has been redone better in future games, especially Mario Odyssey. That game just dunked Mario 64 in the trash can of history.
Mario Sunshine has better graphics. I don't care that they are old, they are still nice to look at. However, controlling the flood device is no fun at all. And the levels get too hard too fast.
Mario Galaxy is the only game out of the collection that I enjoyed. Its levels have inconsistent quality, but most of them are good. The boss level was a real challenge, and it felt nice to beat it. But even as a standalone game, I would not say it's a must-buy. It was nice to pass the time, but not as good as Odyssey.

NINTENDO'S EXPLOITATION AT ITS WORST: This game was only available in shops and on the eShop for a limited time, creating artifical scarcity. Nintendo is not always anti-consumer, but when it is, it stoops pretty low.

MARIO 64 IS MORE ABOUT NOSTALGIA THAN ANYTHING: Mario 64 was revolutionary when it came out, and it's still uncanny how many new ideas this game nailed–but it didn't nail *all* of them, and today it often feels frustrating and unfriendly. That darn camera!

SUNSHINE IS HIT AND MISS: Of the three games, Super Mario Sunshine is the most controversial. Whatever your thoughts, it's certainly a game that should have been better balanced, ridden with frustrating moments and difficulty spikes.

    PROS:

THREE IMMORTAL CLASSICS: You can dissect each game and evaluate its strenghts and weaknesses. Still, nobody can deny that ach of these games deserves a place in the history of videogames.

A HUGE AMOUNT OF CONTENT: Just completing these three games can keep you busy for dozens of hours. If you ever decide to 100% one or more of them… prepare to spend a very, very long time on this collection.

SUPER MARIO GALAXY: Super Mario Galaxy is still a fantastic game. If it came out today, it would still be one of the best games of the year, and one of the highest notes ever hit by the Mario series.

The games are all the original games playing in emulators - flawed emulators. Enhanced graphics are done by having the emulator swap out textures with higher resolution ones on the fly. Sure, that's something that's been done before, and since. But the emulators themselves are buggy as well. There's a lot of popping of models. There's graphics glitches. There's a lack of widescreen support. What the world was expecting was to see the games remade with better graphics, like the original Super Mario All-Stars. What the world received was one of the laziest compilation jobs out there. At the very least, the collection did include some side content, mostly in a music player. But that doesn't redeem that the games themselves, already limited to three with several other titles that people were looking for absent, were presented this badly. Expand

Absolutely loved this collection. Personally having never played 64 it stood out as the weakest of the three. The camera controls are pretty bad and movement feels less precise than in later entries. It's also tough to figure out what to do a lot of the time but it was a fun experience overall.

Revisiting sunshine was just an absolute pleasure. I'd forgotten how much fun that game is.

Revisiting sunshine was just an absolute pleasure. I'd forgotten how much fun that game is. There are a couple of annoying levels. The chuckster one and yoshi's fruit adventure can be a little annoying but the vast majority of the game is just pure fun. The story has quite a bit of charm to it as well.

This was my first time playing galaxy and boy was it a joy to play through. It's a little lacking in challenge I think but there's so much fun and creativity present that I just had a really amazing time playing through it.

The only real downside is that these games were removed from the e-shop. It's a shame that Nintendo would remove it. I can't fault the games themselves though. It would also be nice if they'd included super mario galaxy 2 as well. I'd love to try it.

I also found the collection kind of highlighted some of the issues with odyssey. Having gone back and replayed odyssey I can see how the lack of challenge, the ease of finding power moons and the focus on exploration over platforming would frustrate some long time fans.

It doesn't offer anything in the way of improvements or new content, so the only the only real bonus you'll get from the package is the option to listen to each game's full soundtrack in its entirety any time you want. This understandably makes it a hard sell for those who have already experienced these games, but if you're like me and never played them before it's not so much of a big deal. Especially since each one still carries the distinctive feel of its original console even on this new hardware.

I was surprised how well Super Mario 64 still holds up after all these years. The restrictive camera is a constant source of frustration, but with a few exceptions (those dang slides...) the level design and puzzles are still some of the best in the genre. It's easy to see why this is considered one of the best platformers ever made. Plus it might be more playable than ever here on the Switch because you don't have to put up with the Nintendo 64's awkward M-shaped controller.

    9/10

Shockingly the title that's aged the worst is Sunshine which originally came out on the GameCube back in 2002 making it a full 6 years younger than the game I just got finished talking about! On top of the controls being somewhat loose, Mario's movements feel too unwieldy in design for the level of precision required to make it past some obstacles. This leads to a portion of the challenges being an absolute nightmare to complete and to make matters worse this is the only game where you don't have the freedom to skip certain stages if you want to. Meaning that you have to suffer through its worst moments to see the end. The majority of the time it's still an excellent experience and I absolutely loved the visual style and bright, colorful island environments. Yet, the way it frequently shifts between being a masterpiece to reaching 3D Sonic levels of bad makes it easily the worst Mario I've played to date. Which at the end of the day is still actually pretty great.

    8.3/10

Galaxy, being the newest and therefore the most refined, of course stands out as the best part of the package. It's unique gravity mechanics turn the platforming quite literally on its head allowing for one of a kind scenarios that remarkably haven't been replicated anywhere other than in the game's own sequel since. Plus it has so much content that in order to fully complete everything you have to play through it more than once, and nearly every aspect has been so meticulously crafted that it's genuinely worth doing so. The one quibble I have is with the motion controls. I can't attest to their quality on the Wii as I never tried that version, but I feel fairly confident in saying they didn't make the jump over to the Switch very well. Those playing in handheld mode or who own the "Lite" model must often make unsatisfactory use of the touchscreen and at its lowest points resort to things like tilting or rotating the actual console itself. Far from game breaking, but are nonetheless elements of an otherwise incredible game that I would have rather not experienced.

    9.2/10

Due to it's time-limited release (which as of this writing has already passed) 3D All-Stars will one day make a nice collector's item, and if you've never played the games before this is probably the best way to do so as it's likely going to be cheaper the hunting them all three down individually. My overall score for the compilation itself is based on an average of the scores you can see listed above that I gave to each of the included titles themselves.

In an age where remasters/remakes of beloved games and franchises have dominated sales figures, like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, it was an odd choice for Nintendo to simply release these classic games without any apparent upgrades or changes. This bundle includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy almost entirely in their original form. Besides the necessary Wii remote changes made for Super Mario Galaxy, these are exactly the same games you remember. Even down to the wonky camera from Super Mario 64, which should have been the first thing they changed. In addition to the odd choice to not improve these games, Nintendo is also enacting a forced scarcity model on this title by only selling it until March 31st, 2021. We are not making this up.

This isn’t some remarkable collectors edition that comes with limited edition art or a cool steel case. This is a glorified emulator for two of the best games ever made and one okay game. Forced scarcity is a weird thing in the era of digital gaming. Do you expect me to believe that there is some bigger reason, beyond greed, that you can’t keep a digital game on your store longer than 6 months? All of this complaining and I haven’t even touched on the actual games yet, but for the most part, these are the same exact games that existed on their original consoles, good and bad included.

The likelihood that this review enlightens you on some new aspect, of these two amazing games and one okay one, that hasn’t been covered over the last 20+ years is low. These games are markers for generations of gamers and signify the leaps we have made. They've driven the video game industry forward and laid down the framework for 3D platformers. Super Mario 64 signaled a change for what video games could be and the fact that it is included in this bundle elevates it to high levels. Even with Super Mario Sunshine trying to pull it down. To clarify, Super Mario Sunshine is not a bad game when compared to most 3D platformers. It is just an okay Mario game, especially in contrast to its successor, Super Mario Galaxy.

Super Mario Galaxy revolutionized what a Mario game could be and it's an absolute delight to play. It's a whimsical and beautiful adventure through space that replicates a lot of the magic felt in Super Mario 64. It is worth noting that this was my first time playing Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, and let me tell you, playing Super Mario Odyssey before these two paints them in a much different light than they were originally played in. Galaxy still has unmatched gravity mechanics and world design, but Sunshine falters significantly when it comes to creative environments and enjoyable move sets.

The most stark realization after playing these three classics, in contrast to Super Mario Odyssey, is how unenjoyable it is to be taken out of a world after acquiring a star or shine. Odyssey beautifully maintains momentum when playing through worlds by allowing you to continue your adventure in the same location after obtaining a moon. This momentum is critical in a grueling game like Sunshine, where the difficulty level was turned up to 11, and the temptation to throw down your controller and turn off the console is high. For the most part, these three titles hold up very well, but they also highlight the masterful evolution that is Super Mario Odyssey.

In summary, Super Mario 64 is as good as you remember, barring the camera issues. Super Mario Sunshine is still the black sheep of the Super Mario 3D family, though offering some interesting mechanics that are worth trying if you’ve never touched the title. And Super Mario Galaxy holds up pretty well as one of the best 3D Marios, even though it can feel awfully linear at times. Super Mario 3D All Stars is exactly what it is described as and nothing more. That being said, we discussed on a recent podcast episode who the demographic for this game is. We do not recommend this bundle to those who did not grow up with nostalgia for it, but would rather suggest Super Mario Odyssey for a new Switch owner. For those of us who have nostalgia for these titles, like the BLG team, we definitely recommend this. These three games are must haves for any fan of the classic 3D platforming genre. At the end of the day Busch League Gaming gives this a very nostalgic, biased 8 out of 10.

While these are lazy ports and the could've been so much more, they are still amazing games that will give you hours of entertainment even if the ports aren't ambitious. Even by how lazy this collection is I'd still recommend to pick it up since these 3 games are so amazing and they could take up to 100 hours to 100% complete all 3 games as there is enough content in these games to keep you entertained for a long time, especially if you haven't tried one or any of these games this is the perfect time to try them out. This is the best official way to experience this retro content (although that's not saying much).

However, this collection is a disappointment in many ways, not the games themselves but what it could've been. For one thing, Super Mario 64 isn't even widescreen when we've seen PC modders being able to do that very easily with so much less money and resources than the global billion dollar company Nintendo. There aren't many control or picture options which are features you'd expect from an anniversary collection, not even the slightest additions of textures to make the games look better. However, the thing that baffles me the most is that Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine still run at 30fps when we've seen PC mods able to run those games easily at 60. It baffles me that Nintendo didn't even take the effort to make these games 60fps ESPECIALLY when Mario Sunshine already had a 60fps build at one point for the Gamecube. Also outside of these ports, Nintendo didn't really add much of anything interesting to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Mario. No behind the scenes footage of the creation of these games, no interesting trailers or art, or much of anything at all. The only real content 3d all stars gives a soundtrack, but in the year 2021 with our smart device always connected to YT and the Internet, do you even need the soundtrack when you could just go straight to youtube and access thousands of Nintendo or video game soundtracks

Honestly, I feel like this collection is disrespectful to gaming's number 1 icon that in the past 35 years always strived in being in the most consumer friendly and fun

    Pros
    Classic game (s)
3D platforming that set the standard
    Simple gameplay
    Fun characters

    Cons
The limited timeframe to purchase the game
    Disappointing extras
The camera really needs to be fixed
    Interacting with objects was difficult

Playing Mario 64 again on a hybrid console felt great and I will play through the other games. I don't like what Nintendo has done with the limited time to purchase the game, but I don't regret my purchase. Yes, you can play these games on an emulator for free, but that takes away from the Mario franchise. I paid to support Mario and to enjoy three games (two of which I haven't played) on a hybrid console. These games are old, but they're still fun.

On Mario 64, the camera got frustrating at times because I couldn't look where I wanted to and I had to get creative. It also would have been nice to see it get the same love as Mario Sunshine so that it could fit the whole screen. It's a faithful remake, but I would have liked to have seen basic improvements to the game to make it more user friendly. It's annoying when you know what to do, but by golly, you either can't interact with the object immediately in front of you, or the ai doesn't move so you stand for a full minute, watching and waiting. However, that is for Mario 64. I expect that the next two games won't have the same problems.

These games are great, clean fun. They are worth looking into, but soon won't be available (unless you buy off a third party looking to make a profit).

I hope in the future, Nintendo offers bells and whistles for a limited time and then just the ports of the game in the future because what happened here took away from three great games.

Not sure why this release is worth $60, it's just a ROM dump of three old games with very little changes. Fans have made better attempts at Mario 64 HD for free.

These 3 games are played for the first time in HD and with the possibility to play them portable. Still, it's not enough, as they haven't been retouched in any way, as was done in 'Super Mario All Stars', and even for collector's purposes the content falls short, missing 'Super Mario Galaxy 2'. As for the games themselves, 3 masterpieces of the best of the platform genre.

Most of the complaints on here are borderline idiotic. You buy the port to play the games, you’re certainly acting entitled to think you should get extra features. Mario 64 and Galaxy are masterpieces. Sunshine is a fun little different game. If you expected more that’s on you worth every penny to play these games on Switch and on the go, legally.

Game does not include manuals scans, Nintendo Power scans, concept art, promotional materials, adjustable controls, Mario Galaxy 2, or the additions made to Mario 64 DS. Very disappointing. I expect the Metroid Prime Trilogy will be more of the same.

Super Mario 64 being the only game remastered with the other two not. The fact that the game is limited, and the collection to celebrate the plumber's 35th anniversary is bland and I like this collection. But this isn't a way to celebrate a mascot's anniversary. Perhaps when he turns 40 we'll get more, more extras, something like Kirby's 20th Anniversary. This game needs more content and games. Expand

I'm sorry Nintendo but this is not how you treat your most iconic character. The 3 games are very good obviously but this compilation just feels lazy and simple, even the menu doesn't give you much thing to do apart from listening the soundtrack. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Mario 3D all - stars game is a bit of a disappointment. I downloaded it recent on my switch and booted up the game. I loaded into Super Mario 64 and immediately noticed the game didn’t fit the switch’s screen. The camera controls are a bit wacky, and whenever you collect a star or die, all of the red coins reset and you are booted out of the painting. Then I tried Super Mario Sunshine. I collected Fludd, and got to cleaning up the graffiti, I somehow could not fighter out how to beat the boss of the level, and the controls are super different to the original game. Then, reluctantly I booted up Super Mari Galaxy, and found the controls were wacky and you can’t skip cutscenes in ANY of the games. My favourite out of the 3 would be Super Mario 64. I give this game a 4/10, and don’t recommend buying it unless you have the money to spare. My advice: read reviews before you buy the game. Expand

The best 3D Mario offering on the Switch IMO. Classics preserved without too much updating. Every language is available, even Korean in Galaxy! Please play this instead of Odyssey, 3DW, or Bowser’s Fury World- these games are much better.

Mario 64 was my favourite game and felt revolutionary at the time. I don't mind the lack of wide-screen but fighting with the controls and camera angle makes the game really show its age.

Mario sunshine looks fantastic. Much better than the original. Shame the game is super frustrating and easily the weakest in the 3d mario series. Galaxy was a brilliant game. Easily as good as most

Galaxy was a brilliant game. Easily as good as most modern day platformers and in my opinion better than the sequel. Again, it looks fantastic and plays great when docked. Unfortunately, the controls in handheld haven't been thought through at all. You are expected to take your hand off the controller to touch the screen and collect things while performing difficult platforming sections at the same time.

So there we have it. One game really showing its age, one game that wasn't much good anyway and the only decent game by modern standards completely ruined for handheld players.

This is Nintendo at its worst. It just took three old Mario games, pasted them in one bundle and added a soundtrack for each game. This is the recipe for Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Granted, they did similar moves in the past as well, but then they always added a bonus. Think of the Lost Levels (the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2) in the compilation game Super Mario All-Stars so many years ago. Moreover, they updated the Super Mario games on NES with SNES-worthy graphics.

In this case Nintendo added nothing. No graphical updates whatsoever and no extra content. It doesn't play any worse than the original, but if that's the major selling point of a compilation it's time to start asking some critical questions. The advantage of this bundle is that you can play three different Mario titles on one system, but in my opinion that convenience isn't worth full retail price. If you haven't played one or more of these Mario games it's worth picking up Super Mario 3D All-Stars if you don't mind the age. They remain very solid platform games after all and I consider Galaxy as one of the best 3D platformers to this date and even one of best games in any genre.

A mediocre product by Nintendo is scored with a mediocre score. Ten for the actual software and zero for the effort that Nintendo put in this compilation bundle. A five overall for something that is basically a quick money grabbing scheme by Nintendo.
