i really hate the "free to play" microtransaction type of structure in video games. but at the same time, fighting bosses in Kirby games is always fun. and as i look at my switch profile, it seems i have put over 15 hours into this game. anyway, to get the most fun out of this game, you're gonna have to make that tree grow, but you could always do what i did: use gold points instead of real money

I’m pretty surprised to see so many negative reviews. This game is pretty fun, and it has a story mode and an online mode were you can play with friends. For free game this is great. The only bad thing is there is a meter, limiting the amount you can play at a time.

It's a fun little Kirby free to play game with RPG aspects, multiplayer, grinding and level up system. Fun or what it is but can get repetitive.

Despite having gorgeous graphics and nice music, Super Kirby Clash is as shallow as free to play games get. With repetitive, uninspired levels and almost zero depth you have pretty much experienced the entire game within the first 5 minutes. As a free to play game, its okay. Not something I would necessarily call ‘bad’ but not something I will play for more than 2 days either.

This is a great bulid up from the original. I mean NIGHTMARE IS BACK!!! The feels very good to control and now can be played with your friends on one system or online. The loads of new bosses do make it feel different from the original. There's no reason not to at least try it.

Super Kirby Clash is the perfect case against microtransactions. True, the game never gets greedy, and you can enjoy all of it without paying a dime. But the "free to start" foundation ends up poisoning the game's flow, and making it more grindy that it needs to be.

Super Kirby Clash could easily be a pleasant quick boss rush with a couple dozens of fun bosses and a decent online component, and leave before it overstays its welcome. Instead, it waters down the experience by forcing you to play the same bosses again and again, just to provide a frame that encourages you to pay for otherwise unnecessary shortcuts. The fights are fun enough, but they grow old quick when you have to go through them multiple times for reasons that have nothing to do with gameplay.

All in all, Super Kirby Clash is a missed opportunity. I'd pay a few bucks for a condensed version of it–but as it is now, it's mostly a waste of gaming time that can be spent on more focused, less repetitive experiences.

Now if your someone who has never played or heard of any monster hunteresque games then this might be something to kinda of introduce you to that genre. stats and armor making is as simplified as it could possibly be, and there's online play(very spotty near end game fair warning) local wireless, and 4 player co op on one system which is great. four over arcing problems. only consist of monster from team kirby clash deluxe edition and the original team kirby clash bundled with planet robobot with maybe like 2 new bosses and subspecies, with the spotty online, unlike other monster hunting games where a player leaves the quest still go's on just that player isn't there anymore kirby clash disconnects all players and this also has the nintendo "rage quit" punishment system as in the more you disconnect the more you have to wait to play online again, for smash thats great for kirby clash that means if someone decides to rage quit or forced dc. not only did it cost you the quest but you could be possible banned for a bit till you can play again. third the valor system, this is here to do nothing but to restrict how much you play and force monetization( will get to that soon). i don't know why but they kept the valor system(which was part of Kirby deluxe and not the original mini-game i believe) which is basically like every mobile restriction bar. granted it instantly fills up and increases by 2 everytime you level up and it cost 2 apple gems to refill but in early game this is tolerable, end game this can be an annoying obstacle especially since higher lvl quest use more valor. finally the BIGGEST problem with super kirby clash is....Apple Gems aka the main currency for the game. I know some people talk about Mario kart tour being "Nintendo being greedy" and while that's a stretch for that game oh boy they should try this. when the player is introduced to apple gems it seems very tolerable and the choices seem easy to make. you are told you could pay for them but in early game it feels very easy to decide between whether you want armor, more levels, or cosmetic items. you get gem apples for completing quests and doing heroic missions (achievements essentially). they are also used to revive everyone if you all get killed or you run out of time so it will refill it. as well as refilling your empty valor bar. there is also a tree in central hub that a player every 12 hours can harvest 3 gem apples. here's the thing, near end game you have spend more above 80 gem apples for both pieces of one armor set for one class (as the demand for gem apples increases with rarity). end game quests cost like around 35 gem apples, and you'll probably run out of time on these quests as it depends on the level and armor set a person you join up with has. and you'll run out of valor more than you'll level up. and heroic missions start becoming nightmarish with missions like complete this level 45 quest with beginner gear and earn a platinum which is under 50 seconds. here's the thing with the tree in the hub though. while it give 3 it can be leveled up. how do you level it up you ask? buy buying bundles of apple gems using real life money. the more apple gems you buy the more your tree levels up. now the first bundle you'll see is 50 cents which doesn't look so bad but its the last couple bundles you should look at first . the max pack for this game is $35 dollars they get 5000 gem apples instantly and 2000 per 12 hour harvest. meaning if someone paid $35 during the end game grind or as soon as the first time they load up the game ever. they don't have to worry about this troubling grind at all as they just got past it with that transaction. honestly nintendo makes it really hard to avoid the microtransaction in this game. its so tempting heck even i ended up falling for it and fell for it(used my gold points though so i guess they came in good for something). in the end this isn't what i would say an excellent game to start the MH genre with but its really fun with friends and most fights are fun i'll give them that. but even Nintendo who seems to be one of the few companies doing DLC right these days. really did ended up making a f2p game that iss pretty much like a modern day f2p if you ever played. in the end i still have fun with this Kirby game but its super disappointing especially since they did nothing really "new" after the previous "2" installments this spin off serious had. i recommend this as a game to play with friends or for short burst, but not to learn the MH genre or to MH fanatics either. Loved this game on the 3DS and it's even better on the switch. The graphics look crisp, although the frame rate dips occasionally, and the gameplay is fun and varied depending on the class you choose. Although the freemium concept gives this game a grinding curve, like its predecessor, I felt less held up by the bosses, and unlocking new weapons is still satisfying.

Having just finished the "True Final Battle", I can safely say that Super Kirby Clash is the most forgiving free-to-play game I have ever encountered, to the point where comparing it to a mobile game feels unfair and insulting.

The game lets you beat it's main story up to the true final battle and get up to level 60 with ease, giving you plenty Gem Apples along the way and always providing alternatives so you can keep playing constantly. While it's true that main story quests require Gem Apples to unlock, they give those apples back in the form of quest challenges once you beat the quest itself, making it so you never run out of in-game currency for the main story.

Not only that, but the new vigor for the online mode let's you grind more Gem Apples and XP while you don't have enough for the main story, you can usually just play some online quests, level up once and get back to story mode with your regular vigor all filled up. Even then, if you join a friend's party, you don't have to spend vigor, but you get XP regardless, making it so you can just take turns and play together as much as you want while filling up your vigor for the main story.

Honestly, this game felt to me like a simplified version of the Monster Hunter style formula, where you take on big bosses within a time limit without being able to see their healthbar. Performing your class' role correctly and taking advantage of each special ability they have is key to success specially in the online mode, where coordination between players is key to getting gold or platinum medals even when you're several levels below the recommended. Basic resource management is also a necessity if you want to beat the campaign without waiting or paying, but that just makes it all the more challenging and rewarding when you actually do it in roughly 20 hours of total playtime.

After the main story, you unlock quests in the "Super" difficulty and can reach up to level 100. Thought Gem Apples become more scarce, and heavy challenge grinding is required to 100% the game. Luckily, HAL was kind enough to provide an option to just directly pay 40$ and forget about microtransactions whatsoever, getting an insane ammount of Gem Apples daily (2000 every 12h) that just remove the waiting and heavy grinding in favour of a more straightforward post-game experience. So if you're uncomfortable with microtransactions you can just "unlock" the full game for a fairly common retail price of 40$ (it's still possible to beat the main campaign with easy for free tho as I've previously stated).

    To summarize:

    - Fun and challenging gameplay
    - Amazing OST
    - Free 20 hour campaign
    - Option to pay for the game straight away and ignore Gem Apples

Sounds like a good deal to me :D

Leave it to Nintendo for making a teamwork-based game into a Freemium* game. This CONSOLE game has microtransactions, waiting, a stamina bar, and really stale gameplay.

Now let's compare it to a traditional mobile game: In this example, Clash of Clans.
In CoC, you can pay money to get gems. That's microtransactions.
You have to wait for your builds to be finished. That's waiting.
You can't always attack other bases because of not having enough troops (waiting) and a stamina bar last I checked.
    And barely anything new happens.

Super Kirby Clash follows almost this exact same formula. It feels more of a mobile game than something Nintendo likes to make for their hot new console.

Now, I understand that this game is free and the developers need to make money out of it. But there are so many better ways to do it. For example, just make it cost money. It would be a whole lot better than having to deal with mobile game cliches.

Or make it a side project and pull WAY back on the microtransactions. Both ways would function much better.

And then there's the next problem. The lack of variety. There are 4 classes in Super Kirby Clash that the player can pick. Sword Hero is versatile, Hammer Lord deals a ton of damage, Doctor Healmore can, well, heal, and Beam Mage can stop time for the enemy.

But that's it. it would have been a lot better if more abilities were added so you just don't have to pick 4 Beam Mages and spam Time Beam to win. Just programming one of every Copy Ability's attacks to be chargeable wouldn't be a big deal.

TL;DR: Too much of a mobile game. Waiting, microtransactions, a stamina bar, stale.

*Freemium is defined as a game, usually on mobile, that can be played to the end without ever spending any money. However, the game is usually full of waiting that can be skipped by paying money. As such, Freemium games are generally looked down upon.

Brief intro, I'm somewhat familiar with a lot of freemium models for games, I always seem to try them out, most I quickly give up on. Super Kirby Clash, however, is part of a "new style" of freemium that is MUCH more about "paying what's appropriate" than manipulating you to pay for the same thing multiple times.

So let's back up a moment, and say why it's good. You can play with 4 people at a time (including locally on one Switch), with simple controls, against engaging and cartoony bosses. Even if you take damage and run out of "stamina", your character falls down, yells "Help!", and someone can come over and press a button to pick them back up with some health. It's extremely forgiving, the only way to "lose" is to run out of time, or if everyone gets knocked out at once. I played with my 6, 7, and 8 year old (two boys, one girl), all pretty new to video games, and they all loved it. There are 4 different "roles" to play, and it was neat to see them choose the role they like best. You also have very simple upgrades to weapons and armor, which update very simple stats. It is an extremely chill but engaging game, especially for adults to play with kids.

Now, let's circle back to the freemium model. The "premium currency" is "gem apples", you spend them for various kinds of progression. However, putting money into the game gives you a PERMANENT increase to the amount of gem apples you get every 12 hours. The cheapest is less than a dollar, to buy 50 gem apples, and which will forever give you 20 gem apples every 12 hours instead of 10. You can also spend gem apples, fairly cheaply, for other kinds of benefits that permanently improve playtime or progression.

That's why I call this "pseudo-freemium", because it's almost like you're paying for the number of boss battles you can reasonable expect to unlock and win against. Because most of the "game" isn't progression through some story, but choosing a boss fight, choosing an interesting combination of roles, trying to beat your record time, or trying to get all the achievements for a particular boss. And all in a way that's still extremely accessible for young kids. Using gem apples to refresh your playtime is extremely cheap, compared to how many you get every 12 hours, so there's very little lost when losing a particular battle.

Personally, I tried out the game, looked at the options, and chose the one that was about $4. That gives me 30 gem apples per 12 hours (tripling the original rate), and I've never needed to put in more money. I've already unlocked enough interesting boss battles to last our family for quite a while.

That all being said, I'm deducting some points, because some of the information I have put here is NOT very clear or obvious in the game. I feel like the game needed a better tutorial or consolidated reference page. The game works best when there's an adult to "facilitate" things, especially getting those permanent benefits early. Also, yeah, if kids play unsupervised you need to put your credit card behind a password. But with those caveats, it's still one of the best whole-family action games on the Switch.
