If this is the only game that I play on the Switch, I would still consider it $300 well spent. Expand

Areas to work on: While gameplay is good, but after 3-4 hours, it begins to feel stale; you'll need to revisit areas and beat monsters or dig around until you find stones for money. After 5 hours, I found it less-than-enjoyable to run around and try to locate gems, stones, or other means for getting money.

In the end, it's a better than average title you could complete in about 9 hours during a weekend.

So, in a way, it's the precursor to the love for downloadable titles that has defined my gaming habits this decade. I guess one can only wonder how much stronger that effect would have been if that game was Steamworld Dig 2 instead, as this sequel takes an already addictive formula and goes completely nuts with it. In a good way, if you can't already tell.

You play as Dorothy (or Dot), who gets to the city of Tumbleton looking for Rusty, the player character in the previous game. The game's world is a post-apocalyptic yet colorful land, inhabited mostly by steam-powered Robots, and strange earthquakes have been worrying Tumbletonians about the city's future. As such, Dot agrees to enter the mines below the city, previously explored by Rusty, to investigate, while looking for her friend's whereabouts.

The gameplay follows closely in the footsteps of the first title, meaning it's got an extremely addictive loop. You go down the mine, dig around, collect minerals, find new weapons and upgrades, then comes back to the surface once your backpack is full. The main difference is that, quite literally, the entire world of the first Steamworld Dig is a single are in this sequel.

I know, bigger isn't necessarily better, but my goodness did Image & Form deliver the goods when it comes to gameplay progression. This is, simply put, one of the most satisfying metroidvanias I've ever played, by virtue of how it manages to keep giving you new abilities that seem overpowered in the surface, but feel just right in practice. They make traversing previous areas a breeze, but are integrated into new ones in smart ways, so that the difficulty curve never feels dampened. It's really a masterclass in open 2D level design.

Aside from the 'main' weapons and items found in secret chambers, Steamworld Dig 2 allows you to use cogs (which are found during your exploration) to upgrade various aspects of Dot's abilities. By going back to the surface, you can add new cogs to new slots, or even exchange old ones, and as such customize your own skill tree. This helps immensely in the exploration, which is the game's true meat, but also in bosses (which, sadly, are few and far between) and puzzle-solving.

If you manage to get 100% of the items in each of the game's various areas, there's also post-game content in the form of a series of gauntlets. Those dial the challenge all the way up, requiring you to truly master everything you've learned during the game if you hope to succeed.

    TL;DR:
The first Steamworld Dig was a lovely and unique metroidvania. This sequel is exactly that, except with an incredibly larger scope, featuring many more areas, themes, and mechanics. With a super addictive gameplay loop and almost perfect design in levels, puzzles, items, and abilities, Steamworld Dig 2 is destined to go down as one of the original gems in the Switch indie scene.

Instead, imagine that steam was the major form of power for all devices. Yes, imagine a steampunk world where war desolated the planet and the only way to survive was to dig. Dig for treasure, dig for materials, dig for life. There have been several games made in the SteamWorld, but the most recent is a sequel to a fairly popular entry that involved a whole lot of digging.

Three years later, the fine folks at Image & Form Games release the sequel, and while I didn’t love the first, SteamWorld Heist was certainly up my alley, so I figured I’d give it another shot. I’m not sure if I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind with the first one or what, but I was immediately enamored with SteamWorld Dig 2. The game is absolutely beautiful, and the western twang for the soundtrack certainly gives it character. I knew from the get go that the game wouldn’t just be about digging, as there is a decent amount of platforming and a boss fight within minutes. Well, not so much a boss, but a good indication of what was to come.

You play as a Dorothy (Dot), a Steambot looking for Rusty, the main character from the first entry. There are a series of mysterious earthquakes, and it’s possible that the rumblings and the missing Steambot are connected. Why and how are up to you to figure out. You’ll meet an assortment of characters on your journey, each with their own bits of amusing dialogue, as well as your own sidekick that would love for something bad to happen to anyone and everyone.

During your trek through the mines, you’ll come across varied enemies and landscapes. What starts off almost like a puzzle game soon becomes much deeper with the new equipment you receive, such as the luxurious hookshot and jetpack. It’s honestly amazing just how much the game opens up after a few hours – it’s almost as if it changes genres. Learning the best way to battle enemies, finding all the secrets that the game has to offer, and solving the story’s mystery is truly something that makes me consider going back to the original to give it another chance.

There is one major difference between the first and second game though. The first was procedurally generated, whereas the second is handcrafted. I don’t have any qualms with making a game either way – Spelunky is one of my favorite platformers, but that almost feels handcrafted the way Derek created it. It’s possible I felt a much stronger connection with this one from the start because of the love put into the level design. Outside of the digging that you’ll be spending most of your time with, there are some rooms with specific solutions that are checked off once you not only complete the obvious puzzle, but find all the secrets within. These will offer artifacts that can be traded for blue prints to enhance your gear, and you’ll also find cogs which are used to equip said upgrades.

Weapon upgrades are also made available as you level up your gear with the treasure you find in the mines to sell. Is your light running out too fast? Is the radius it lights up too small? Is digging with your pickaxe taking to long? Do you want to boost the distance your pressure bombs go before exploding? All of these things (and many more) are available to you as you upgrade your gear with cogs, and each one feels necessary. Don’t worry though, you aren’t stuck with your decisions. If you decide one of the upgrades isn’t for you, just respec. You’ll also want to make sure you’re killing enemies, as they boost your experience, and each level gained gives an added bonus to the amount you sell your treasure for, meaning more upgrades.

While spending time in the mines, you’ll come across tubes that you can open up that serve as fast-travel points. In some cases, these may mean life or death for your character. At one point I had run out of light and had mined down in a way that I couldn’t make my way back up. Luckily I was able to make it to a new tube without dying, as that would mean losing a good amount of my findings. The gameplay structure of traversing the mines for treasure, making progress to your next goal, and upgrading your gear is as rewarding as it gets in this type of game. And if you’re able to more or less 100% the game, you’re able to continue past the final boss, which will no doubt be the end of the game for many.

If you enjoyed the original, you’ll love SteamWorld Dig 2. As someone that thought the first was fine, I’m amazed at how much improvement there was in the second. There’s so much to do and so much to see. It’s been a great year for indie sequels; Image and Form continues that trend with this. Pro tip: if you have a Switch or Vita, this game is perfect for short bursts on the go.

SteamWorld Dig was already a very good little game. SteamWorld Dig 2 takes everything that worked in the first game, and supercharges it. The charming "robots in the old west" setting is the same, and so is the game loop: dig for a while, collect resources, travel back to the basecamp, upgrade, repeat.

Where the first Dig was almost skeletal in its simplicity, however, this second game adds some much-needed diversity to its environments, and a map that extends in multiple directions instead of just downwards. You could argue whether the first Dig deserved to be called a "metroidvania", but this second one definitely does. Some areas are not accessible until you get movement upgrades, and you get those signature metroidvania moments where you suddenly connect to a known area.

Speaking of movement upgrades: the most powerful ones are a mixed bag. Minor spoiler: the jet engine improves your quality of life and guarantees that you won't struggle to traverse heavily mined areas, like in the first game. However, you could argue that it makes your life a bit *too* easy. Once you can fly around, the entire point of the game (digging tunnels) becomes moot: you just happily move around the map with barely any limitations whatsoever. On one side, this upgrade is very welcome–on the other, it almost nullifies the premise of the game, and removes almost all the challenge from the endgame.

The Image & Form team is great at building compelling upgrade and exploration loops that hook you in and make you want to have just one more go, and this game is no exception. It's not a must play like SteamWorld Heist, but it works perfectly as a nice chilled diversion.

Not bad. Some of the puzzles were genuinely challenging and fun to complete. Challenges near to the end of the game did not feel as challenging as they did not do enough to take advantage of the rapidfire new abilities - I felt extremely overpowered by the end of the game. This however gets easier after first few hours of the game in most of the cave settings, the game starts in a desert that is particularly clutttered. Let me start of by saying that SWD2 looks amazing and feels amazing. That being said, I feel like it's missing some things here and there.

The first three hours of the game are the best. You get to familiarise yourself with the townspeople, find minerals in the mines to upgrade your stuff and explore the lands of steam world which is amazing.

But as the game went on I realized that there was not a lot of variety even though at the same there were... There are few enemies and very few "blocks" to mine and the minerals all look the same (if you don't look close). There are, however, many upgrades and a somewhat interesting story which keep you going.

At the end of my play through I caught myself hoping it would end soon so I could play something else, even though it just took me 7 hours to beat.

I feel like the price tag is too big for the amount of game you get. The quality of game is good but the amount is too little but if I were to keep exploring to find every little object in the world, the quality wouldn't be good enough.

It's a good game, but not the best. 7.5/10

I thought I would read some of the reviews from the first game and see what this new one was all about. I admit that the game trailer wasn't all that exciting...but decided to give it a try.

    What an awesome game!

I played through and enjoyed almost all of it (there were a few challenging parts that I was just not prepared for). The only real complaint would be that it is too short of a game, but for the price it is worth the ~10 hours of gameplay. I'm not sure if I would play through it again, but I will likely pick up after the last save and see if I can complete all of the caves.

The game feels very well paced with goodies and upgrades coming steadily, but not easily (played on Normal mode). The graphics are pleasing and the gameplay is smooth. I was impressed by how smooth the controls felt. Only two issues held me back a bit (I wanted to swing my pickaxe in the air and the jetpack is tricky through spiky areas).

I am excited for a Steamworld Dig 3!

I had a lot of fun with this game. What makes the mining mechanics unique is how much thought has to go into every dig, because there are limits to where you can mine. It's not immensely different but it's quite different to anything I've played before and it makes for some incredibly tense and entertaining boss fights, some of the better ones that I've played in a while. The final boss fight was somewhat disappointing, in that it wasn't much different from the prior bosses and it was honestly too easy, but it was still a fun time and a satisfying enough conclusion. The ending is interesting; one which left me feeling conflicted on how exactly I was supposed to feel (in a good way, mind). I have a feeling it was designed to set up the next game which means it felt a little underwhelming, but I'd easily be up for a SteamWorld Dig 3 any day of the week. Great game, check it out if you haven't. Expand

Even watching people make it through the final challenges on YouTube, I couldn't manage some of them, as the controls must be very exact and precise.

But that's not that big of a deal, as they're completely optional. If you ever enjoyed the first game or the old flash game Motherload, you should buy this game.

I love this game! One of the best Metroidvania titles I've played in years. The music, controls, progression, exploration, and appearance are all top notch. Some of the platforming challenges were Very hard which is a big plus for. I wish it were a bit longer but I'll definitely come back again and again for years to come

There's more abilities to find, better visuals, a better soundtrack, a decent story, and a bunch of well hidden collectibles too. The final boss is a big improvement on that of the first game. There's a lot more puzzles than there were in Dig that are a nice change of pace from the usual digging gameplay. I enjoyed the movement abilities you pick up along the way which make getting around pretty fun. Overall there's just more meat on the bones in Dig 2. That said, the story ends quite abruptly, the combat is still kinda weak, and a couple extra boss fights to shake things up would've been nice. Getting all the collectibles isn't really worth it, and as I was trying to find them all after finishing the main story I was finding it a little annoying but this is optional and it really wasn't too bad.

In the case of Steamworld Dig 2, I'd say bigger is better and that this is a great sequel that's even more fun that the first game. I picked this up on sale for around a fiver and it's well worth the asking price.

This time, however, you'll have to dig deep to find those upgrades and uncover new areas. Along the way, you'll discover these caves that offer unique challenges that range from easy to rather difficult with a reward at the end should you decide to tackle it. My only two critiques are that it had too few bosses and areas, but other than that, the game is just fantastic throughout.

Get ready for an axe picking good time!

Rusty, the protagonist from Steamworld Dig one, has gone missing and you play as the fembot Dot whose mission it is to track him down. Equipped with only her trusty pick axe, you begin building your tool kit of gadgets by yep, you guessed it digging. Just like it’s predecessor, you dig your own path through the randomly generated per play through mine. Where you collect resources to sell in order to upgrade your gear. Throughout the game you earn more advanced gear that is also upgradable, therein lies the loop. Diving into the deep dark depths of the mine, collecting as much ore as you can carry, before your light runs out, only to make it to the top and come back more powerful than before, is such an addictive gameplay experience that it’s easy to lose track of time while doing it.

Each new section of the world is built specific to your most recently aquired tool, layering skill upon skill, think 2d zelda style, and yes there’s a hook shot. One moment you're grappling your way across a barren windy desert and the next you're animating molten iron giants with your ignition axe. Every inch of this world so cleverly designed combined with the fact that you dig your own path , it feels like it was designed just for you. Rewarding you with intuitively hidden secrets and just the right amount of difficulty for the perfect challenge. (desert clip, molten robot, button hook shot puzzle shot)

Steamworld dig two has a lovely cast of characters with a variety ranging from goofy/crazy to prejudicial. The mayor of the town for example, warns you of the shiners, the crazies that live down deep in the mine, well once you get here they're just lovely and help you wholeheartedly . It's amazing that even though I'm a fembot mining my way through this fictitious underground, some things ring real and true.

A very welcome change from the original are the boss fights. Throughout the game you will encounter many different boss fights, which are a great combination of level design and enemy attack pattern maneuvering. With your different mechanics that you acquire throughout the game, you have multiple options for defeating every enemy. Stick that mine roach with a hydrobomb, or shove that fire demon into a pool of water, the choice is yours.

Another upgrade is the length of the game. While steamworld dig one was on the shorter side depending on your play style steamworld dig two can take you well over ten hours to complete. Especially if you like to get your hands dirty.

For a 2d open world, metroidvania experience, steamworld 2 will deliver in every single way. Some metroidvanias leave me frustrated searching for ways to open the next section of the world but in steamworld 2, taking a wrong turn and getting lost on some random self imposed agenda is half the fun.

Whether it's a great movie, a book, or a video game. It’s rare that a sequel can perfectly capture the same lightning in a bottle as the original while elevating the franchise to the next level. Well steamworld dig 2 has done just that.

With an engaging world, rock solid mechanics, and a gameplay loop that will keep you digging for more.

The main digging mechanic is a fairly unique diversion, but it doesn’t offer quite enough, for me, to really be that interesting or entertaining. That said, the character handles responsively, and the friendly mapping and transport system both help to keep the momentum going.

And SteamWorld Dig 2 does a few key things very well indeed. First, it does a brilliant job of guiding the player; you shouldn’t ever really struggle working out what needs to be done next. Second, the ‘mini-puzzles’ scattered around the main area, and the sub-areas are frequently very well planned and rewarding. And, third, the upgrade system, and extra movements that can be gained are both generous, making for a satisfying learning curve.

Graphically, the game is bright, welcoming, and — fully in keeping with the overall aesthetic — entirely accessible, clearly highlighting objects, enemies, and hinting at secret areas. I guess you’d call it a ‘cartoon’ style, and it’s very attractive, particularly in handheld mode.

Is it all just too easy? I guess so, a little, but in being so, it offers such an enjoyable experience, a really accessible counterpart to some of the more challenging titles in this genre, that the difficulty and length can be forgiven. This is a game you’re meant to stroll through, stopping occasionally to think a bit, enjoying the journey.

The music is phenomenally atmospheric, and while the environmental cave music isn't the most memorable, most of the soundtrack above ground is just as good as the games it takes its inspiration from, and all of it fits the theme! My only real complaint/request for the next game in the series is to make it longer. This is truly a quality over quantity -game, and in a perfect world where SteamWorld Dig 3 already exists, the only thing really holding it back from it being a literally perfect game is it's short length. Sure, it has a challenge temple, but for newer players it's too frustrating and older players it doesn't make the game's runtime that much longer.

Additionally, gears and special blueprint items can also be discovered and can improve your equipment in other ways. There are a variety of enemies to kill and a few boss battles as well. Overall, I had fun with this game and it gave me a solid 12 hours of gameplay. 100% completion would probably take a few more hours.

I do have two complaints though. At $20 digital and $30 physical, this game on the switch is a bit overpriced given both the short playtime and the fact that it's only $10 physical for PS4 on amazon. My other complaint is that the exploration element is a bit limited. The map isn't all that large, and it is very restricting in the horizontal direction - caverns go down pretty deep, but don't extend very far from side to side.

By the way, ALL the other Steamworld games are also amazing!!! Expand

if you like metroidvanias, this is a pretty note perfect example of the genre. cool upgrades, a great map, challenging enemies and bosses and a great iteration on the first steamworld dig game. I'm hesitant to give a 10 usually but i think this deserves it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SteamWorld Dig 2 is a Metroidvania developed and published by Image & Form International. You play as a Steambot named Dorothy and you are on an adventure find your missing friend, Rusty. As suggested by the title, the game sets in a steampunk world where humanoid robots are the main characters and you will explore the underground by digging and digging! Locations are interesting and you will equip better gear along the way in order to go even further. Visual and audios are beautiful! The game has an auto-save feature. So to make you sure your progress is saved, you probably need to fast travel to the base (El Machino).

And the puzzles are well-designed. Sometimes it requires your attention to detail skill i.e. you have to find a rock/stone that can be dug and help clear the path. It’s also worth noting that there’s a mark on the map, which indicates where your next destination is. It’s particularly helpful in making sure you won’t get lost or wander off without a purpose.

The exploration is very incentivised. You will come across a secret area and get a new upgrade (ability). Besides that, as you know, the underground mine is very dark. So you will need light (lantern) which can run out easily and you will need to upgrade it as well. There are other things like water tank that needs an upgrade or your management skill if you want to dig deeper into the ground. Without equipment efficiency, further exploration is next to impossible. But don’t worry about that. As you progress, you will be able to upgrade these gears. There’s also this special item called ‘cog’. You can use it to make different equipment build options to your liking. Another thing to note is that although it’s a Metroidvania, there’s a rogue-like feeling to it. If you die, all of the gems collected in a particular run will be lost and you will respawn at the base and start to dig again.

It took me about 9 hours to beat the game. I would say SteamWorld Dig 2 is very accessible to casual players: You can dig deeper down at your own pace, the boss fights are not crazy hard and the puzzles are both easy and sweet. For me, it’s a 9/10 game.

Owned this game since day 1 and replayed it countless times, I think it's the beautiful visuals and the digging that makes this game so addictive... To me, it's a MUST OWN and THE BEST indie game on switch.

This game's a little bit better than its predecessor.

I really enjoyed my time with the game. It´s just enough hard that you don´t want to stop playing if you lose.

The controls are really great and work with the joy–cons really well. Mining is fun and puzzles really make´s you think how to use you´re hookshot, waterbombs, jetpack (what it is) and other fun things.

Thats another thing. I always got exited when i saw a new upgrade. There really aren´t any useless upgrades (if you don´t count the ones you get with upgrade cogs).

Overall, a really solid 2D platformer that has it´s own charm and takes you to a great mining adventure.

Finding the hidden goodies was also mostly fun, and this game is one of the few game maps that I've gotten close to 100% on (if it helps, I am usually more than satisfied with doing about 70-80% of content for any exploration-based game- I'm no completionist for sure). Just the right amount of challenge and good for 15-20 hours of enjoyment. Expand

Didn’t do enough different to the first game for me. Still a good game, well worth picking up on a sale.

One of the best games you can play on switch. It’s simple but oh so fun and easy to follow. I only regret I also bought the first Steamworld dig, which is not half as good as the second version.

Expand

SteamWorld Dig 2 is a textbook sequel. It is bigger, nicer and more addictive, but still without a good story. Despite the shortcomings, this is still a funny game. [Issue#279]

I wish everyone who develops platform games understood movement mechanics as good as Image & Form. SteamWorld Dig 2 is a very good game in every aspect, but the cherry on top is the joy that comes from running around, jumping and climbing. [12/2017, p.62]

Steam World Dig 2 is one of the very best side-scrolling games on the Nintendo Switch, and it is the perfect game to play in between the system’s masterpieces.
