All seems lost – until the fates of Cyris and Lea intertwine! Join our two heroes and save our dying planet in this sci-fi action RPG. Welcome to the future – where everything is automated, recycling is at 99.9% efficiency, and Earth is considered at its peak. Humans and aliens now live side-by-side in sky cities far above the planet’s inhospitable surface. It all could have been perfect ... but it just wasn’t meant to last.

Mysteriously, the systems started failing and the drone networks began acting up – nobody knows quite why. Two strangers, Lea and Cyris, each experience these system failures in two different ways and find themselves brought together by unforeseen circumstances. As a team, they’ll soon uncover dark secrets on the Earth's surface and find a chance at salvation somewhere out there in the cold darkness of space!

Although the game is fun to look at, and to think about, it rarely lives up to its lofty ambitions once it’s in motion. Combat is thankfully sparse enough that players get pushed towards their next objective briskly. Although enemies aren’t always fun to fight, they do look cool, and their bullet patterns are always an impressive spectacle. And while I came in expecting a 3D bullet-hell action RPG, what I got instead was an interesting sci-fi world to explore. It’s a pleasant surprise to see that a world this rich and complex came from a studio this small. Origamihero Games is a developer with huge ambition and a lot of promise, so I’d be keen to see the team iterating on ideas from this game and continuing to polish their craft.

Whatever their biases may be, whether looks, polish, depth, or any number of other potential complaints, making headway to change minds can be tough. While Starlight Alliance shows some effort, there are aspects of it that I think fall in line with some of those stereotypes though, so I would hope the first chance someone takes on an indie wouldn’t be with this game. The controls are a bit funky, collision detection is spotty at best in places can be frustrating, and there are simply some design choices in how the game should play that feel odd, possibly tied to limitations in what either the creative or development teams could pull off. For the patient who have scaled-back expectations there’s a mix of platforming, puzzling, and some light combat here to enjoy… but it can be hard to overlook some of the warts you’ll see along the way.
