The initial Splatoon, despite being the first of the series, made so little missteps that I thought it was impossible for a sequel to keep up the quality. So when Splatoon 2 was first announced, I was skeptical. However, Splatoon 2 didn't just manage to maintain the quality of the first game, it surpassed it even.

The single player campaign now lets you use all weapon classes in the game, including new ones like the dualies and the brellas. All of them will be required to use at some point, which accommodated with great level design, makes you learn and appreciate all of the weapon classes. The single player doesn't just serve as a tutorial though, as it can become quite challenging as well. No level ever repeats itself, and it's full of charm and cool ideas. If more elaborate, it could even stand as its own game, so you definitely shouldn't go thinking it's just a tacked on mode. If you go for all the collectibles, it can even take quite some time to complete.

The real meat of the game is the multiplayer, though. All of the modes from the first game return, with some changes made to the ranked modes to help them feel fresh. The maps these times are much more thought out than the ones from the initial release of Splatoon. They are created with all weapon classes and modes kept in mind, so no longer are there any map-specific bans for certain modes, like Rainmaker on Blackbelly Skatepark. Even the returning maps have been adjusted to be more playable competitively, with Moray Towers no longer being a charger heaven and Port Mackerel's general layout having been changed to no longer have Splash Walls dominate Tower Control on that map. Single-player mechanics like the inkrails and sponges have also been added to the multiplayer maps, making them even more dynamic and fun than in the first game.

An entirely new mode called Salmon Run has been added as well, which has you team up with three people to take on a hoard of invading salmonids. What might seem easy initially can easily become very hard and require clever and coordinated team play. Weapons are randomly assigned here, so you have to know which role you should fulfill with the currently assigned weapon. This keeps things fresh, and also helps you to get good with weapons you normally would never use. Salmon Run feels very different from the regular multiplayer gameplay, and provides a different experience every time you play thanks to all the different events that can occur, like special salmonids appearing, fog limiting your view distance, or low and high tides changing the size of the battle field (just to name a few).

Finally, there have been made some other smaller changes that are still very welcome, like you no longer having to watch the news when the maps rotate or having different ranks for the different modes of ranked battle. You can also play league battles (which are essentially ranked battles) with friends now without putting your rank on the line once you hit B- in any mode, which is a very welcome change from the first game, where you had to hit S rank to be able to play anything but Turf War a bit more casually.

Splatoon 2 has greatly improved upon Splatoon 1, which was already a fantastic game to begin with, so I can safely say this game is nothing short of a 10/10, and if you own a Switch and are still thinking about getting this game, just do it. The price tag of $60 is a steal compared to the endless hours of fun you'll have with this game.

The Perfect Shooter! You don't need to play the first game in this magnificent series to enjoy the beauty which is Splatoon 2! Amazing graphics, several different game modes such as tower control and splat zones and more, and even an outstanding single player experience! and if that doesn't make a great game i don't know what does!

I love this game. The single player is amazing, a better story as well. Salmon Run I'd really fun, I love that you switch around weapons every wave. The online multiplayer is still as good as it has always been. I'm addicted to this game, Nintendo, great job. Also I personally think it should be counted as a sequel.

Fun with some obvious flaws, menus are confusing and the game doesn't do a great job of explaining the basic mechanics of the game. I don't mind the stages or modes being swapped but I still wished there was turf war ranked that ran along side of the regular turf war. one other complaint is the weapons, some are just trash imo (i.e the snipers, roller blasters) vs weapons like the areospray or the sloshers., and it's curious as to why they are even in the game, or at least not buffed. still, spla2n is a fun game, not as deep as I'd like to be paying 60 dollars but to be fair it deserves the price much more than ARMS did. If I could I would give this game 75/100 because despite all the issues I have with it, I still cannot put it down Nintendo has some serious potential moving forward I hope the developers can continue to work out some of it's flaws for the 3rd game.. This is the definitive Splatoon experience. Did you like the first game? Then this is all you could ask for. New story, weapons and supers, maps, features, game modes, on a hybrid console with upgraded graphics (1080p60fps docked).
It's an all around upgrade compared to Splatoon 1, they improved upon it in every aspect.

Consistent weekly updates proves just how much lover and care was put into this brilliant game. The single player is a clever Mario galaxy inspired tutorial that prepares the player for the epic and awesome online. That may sound like a bad thing, but the levels and bosses are all extremely fun and well designed, and will supply you with hours of enjoyment. Those willing to stick around and complete every level with a certain weapon will be rewarded with a unique hero weapon to take into the world online and show off. Speaking of online, this is a masterpiece when it comes to online play. The basic turf war never fails to entertain, and is always fun to play and also allows for quick pick up and go play. More experienced players can then play ranked modes, which consist of amazingly tactical gameplay, from escorting a weapon to the enemies base, riding a moving tower, controlling a certain area with your ink and playing american football with clams. Not your thing, try the addictive Salmon run, the horde mode of Splatoon. Take on the zombie like beings in epic survival maps and earn unique rewards. The only downgrade is the lack of two player due to the Wii U pad being absent. Putting this aside, this is a brilliant game and is one of the best games of 2017. This is a must own for any Switch player, and is a perfectly good reason to buy a Switch. 9/10 Expand

It's mild fun, just don't expect to have any fun with friends and family at home, as split screen is not an option. Otherwise there is a short and bland single-player mode, and the main meat of the game is online. Very little has changed from the previous entry as well. Avoid this game unless you live for online play.

Otherwise, you are not playing with your friends, unless you reach B- rank in ranked mode (which also can not be played with friends). Getting that rank is extremely difficult, because you play with bunch of randoms and also, rank is given per mode, and modes rotate every 2 hours. The map designs have been improved. The single player campaign is more robust and flushes out the game mechanics much better. And the portable nature of the switch makes the whole experience better.

That said, Nintendo is being ridiculous with this game. If they created a car with infinite reusable energy, a breakthrough that could change the world, they would decide not to put in an air conditioner or enable the windows to be rolled down.

My rating instantly goes to a 10 when they make Salmon Run available at all times or at least allow you to create a lounge for it online at all times . They way they schedule this mode is one of the stupidest things I've seen in years. I'm also extremely frustrating that this is also the only realistic way I can play cooperatively with my friends. We cannot play cooperatively in turf war because the matchmaking randomizes the teams. We cannot play cooperatively in ranked either. Instead I have to wait for all my friends to become eligible for league battles. Come on Nintendo these simple-to-change things are having a major negative impact on this game

Also there is a new story for the single-player campaign, that was something i was expecting bigger improvements in terms of length and production value for this sequel. However, even good, it is disappointedly similar and short as the first game.
So, i'd say that if you skipped the Wii U, go for it and have a great time, but if you have played the original to death, you may get tired of playing the same stuff all over again.
Splatoon 3 will probably happen some day, so i'm counting on a completely re-invention for the series next time.

There was no way to make local multiplayer to work on the system without cutting the framerate in half and multiplayer based shooters have to run at 60 fps for the best possible controls. You guy's have to realize Nintendo will prioritize framerate before resolution in games that need it or online multiplayer games. Mario Kart, Arms, Mario Odyssey, and this game are examples of this. Now for my actually review.

The motion controls are nice, giving me close to mouse and keyboard accuracy. The game is very colorful, runs at a nice 60 fps, has plenty of content, and has free DLC down the road. Splatoon 2 is unique on the surface; new creative ideas for design, but within is the same tired, monotonous gameplay design Nintendo refuses to budge on. While I understand this might be what core players desire, it means Nintendo is now ONLY making gameplay for that player base and the rest be damned!

Everything works in the game. Shooting is fun, maps are fun, the objectives are fun, upgrades feel good to get, but there is where and how far I felt it was worth to go. After getting compete gear what is there truly left to do with Splatoon 2? You are left with simply getting to an equilibrium with combat against other players to endlessly do the same thing over and over and over. I personally find this is indicative of the current video game market; but Nintendo are the LEADERS in monotonous game design.

As said said before: everything works, but there's nothing to work towards, nothing more akin to a past trope equivalent in video games: Earning Points. This is how the gaming industry has moved in the last few years: Build a game, debase things that worked in generations past (story is dumb in games), exclaim ONLY gameplay matters, hide ineptitude (can't be bother to make a story that works) build EVERYTHING around gameplay, create boring endless pvp fighting that amounts to nothing but more of the same, just with the same handful of maps/objectives. How many times can someone do the samething I wonder? And I know there will be people which will disagree here; that's expected. You are part of the community that ALWAYS wanted this, the vast majority though are stuck.

If you are looking for something new from Nintendo with Splatoon 2, you will be getting only half new. A solid pvp shooter which is nothing more than a monotonous point collector simulator with vibrant colors.

There are 8 battle stages, but they change every two hours, so if you're interested in short session you'll be able to play only two of them. Every single day you get to watch unskippable cutscene presenting current stages even though you can check these anytime yo want in menu. Matchmaker is not very good, you either get into battle instantly or wait three minutes to be kicked out because there's not enough players. There's a lot of AFK players, whom in 4vs4 make a huge difference. After reaching level 10 you gain access to ranked battles (which is reasonable). There are three ranked modes, which also change every two hours. Therefore if you don't like one of modes, you won't be able to play other modes until time window passes. After reaching rank B- (which means gaining three ranks, or actually two if you're good enough) you gain access to league matches, which can only be played with friends against other teams. Since I only have two pals who own switch and neither of them have splatoon, I'm unable to play league battles. You cannot change weapons without quitting lobby (it's due to matchmaking being weapon based - which is BS, it matches completely wrong weapons sometimes, like 4 identical weapons in one team and 4 different weapons in another). You cannot communicate with teammates, so if someone does something stupid you cannot tell him what to do or insult him for being stupid. Only three messages are availabe - "booyah", "this way" and "ouch". It doesn't suit my communication needs at all. You can also use MOBILE APP for voice chat but only with your friends, so it's easier to use TS or Discord. There's also fourth game mode - salmon run, which is cooperative rush mode. I really like it, but you can't play it all the time since it has time windows (WTF nintendo?!). So, to sum things up - I don't like the matchmaker, I don't like time windows, I don't like playing two levels over and over again, I don't like completely unbalanced weapons. I get more annoyed than satisfied by this game.

There's also a single player mode, but it's so dull, there's no point in even launching it.

Team "balancing" is an issue. One game is a "blow out" for one team, the next, a "blow out" for the team you are selected for. "Blow outs" should be a rare occurrence, but they are not. There should be more games that are competitive. A regular "Bell Curve" should apply to game distribution.

This of course does not apply to "League" or "Custom" in #2.

Also, game "precision" could be improved, accounting more for evasive maneuvers that a player does in "close shot" situations. The game seems to err on the side of the shooter getting the "splat", rather than the "dodger" getting away.

On the defensive side, it's really easy to "stack" your player defensively (with clothing bonuses), making them way too difficult to splat with direct shots firing on them. Toning down the defensive bonuses might help here.

If you liked #1, #2 is recommended. If you've never played Splatoon before, this is a cool game that is fun, and can be addicting. Sometimes, it can be a little frustrating though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd like to state that I've been trying to love the splatoon series since it's inception on the Wii U. However, Splatoon 2 Isnt the fix the game has desperately needed. Splatoon 2 in short is just a large add-on to the original splatoon 2. The singleplayer story and gameplay are not far different from the original. The game's main focus is online multiplayer but for one reason or another nintendo decided to keep the same poor-net code that plagued the last installment by choosing web-style hosting rather than dedicated servers and further lowering the games tick-rate. This has led to one thing I noticed about splatoon that always stays consistent, its how inconsistent the game feels. Theres no consistent hit detection, the games net-code favors weapons that instant kill than those with lower DPS such as the ink guns. So while playing you see that you hit a player enough to kill them yet due to the delay in the netcoding you are far more likely to die first if they are using weapons such as the sloshers, brushes, etc. This makes the gun type weapons less desirable in online matches because of they sheer reaction time you would need to even be able to compete. This leads me onto the motion controls. Ive had massive problems with the motion controls with the switch version compared to the last. Simply because none of the aim movements feel consistent, in my case using the pro controller which makes aiming a complete and utter chore. I hope in the next installment of this series nintendo puts on their big boy pants and actually do the framework of a competitive shooter rather than trying to make it look like one. Expand

This is an excellent game; it has loads of creativity, personality, and mechanics that are both solid and unique. BUT the game is plagued with horrible servers. I'm constantly disconnected (as are many others, apparently) while using a network that runs Overwatch, Rocket League, and Battlefield 1 with no problems. Otherwise, I would give this game a 9/10.

Worst of all, totally spineless nintendo shop doesn't give you returns that you could get your money back from useless products.

I have never met a motion-controller that I like, and Splatoon 2 didn't change my mind about that. It uses motion controls to aim, and that makes aiming awkward and frequently frustrating. There is no precision to aiming, and that is very important in a 3rd person shooter. The single-player campaign is hidden in the city. I found the first two levels, which took me about an hour to complete. There are 5 levels total from the guide I read. I quit the game after the first two levels were completed because of the motion controls though. The game has an interesting mechanic where your character can turn into a squid and swim in any ink you've laid down, which happens with every shot of your gun as it shoots ink. But your gun doesn't have a very long range, so you can't hit anything more than 5 feet in front of you, much less the balloons floating above you that you need to target to progress, and there are frequent platforming sections where you need to ink the platform in front of you, squid to the end, and jump to the next platform. With motion controls, these are the embodiment of frustration, as I had to attempt a simple jump more than a few times, and it just isn't fun. Ultimately, I decided the game wasn't worth my precious time and returned it. Your tolerance for motion controls may vary, but if you hate them like I do, you're not going to like this game. 2/5 stars. Expand

I bought this game in the classic tradition of Nintendo games, to play with friends especially while hanging out in proximity with eachother. Unfortunately, I can't, I cannot stay connected to this game online even long enough to get though a single 4 minute match, this game is literally unplayable.

The first problem is that the antennae in the Nintendo Switch are made out of Laffy Taffy, as has been observed by multiple reviewers and journalism sites. When I connect wirelessly I DC from every match even when sitting literally 8 feet from the router.

To get around the hardware problem I figured I would just play the game with the console docked and with an ethernet cable. Turns out the Switch doesnt support the first two $30 ethernet adapters I bought, took a week of back and forth shipping to figure out which one that was supposed to work actually did.

So finally, with my $30 adapter, with my console docked which is not how I would prefer to use it, with my router's QoS set up to prioritize my console's connection above all else I invite a friend over for a week to stay up late and marathon this game that they like so much.

Nope, doesnt work, Splatoon's netcode wont allow it. We can both connect to the internet on the switch via ethernet cables, but as soon one of us tries to join the other's lobby it disconnects the first person who joined.

OK we say, one of us can be docked and the other can be wireless. Whoops we are back to square one where the wireless doesnt work.

I wish I could say something positive about this game, I do, but this is a multiplayer game, where because of bad hardware and bad netcode I had to spend unnecessary amounts of time and money to even get it to work properly, and then as soon as I actually try to play it with a friend, as a nintendo game, it all breaks.

Thats not even starting on the fact that when you join the lobby of a friend you cannot ensure that you will actually be on the same team. This game has just the least support for actually playing with a friend of any game ive played in the last 10 years.

    Cons:

still favors who kills(splats) the most
gameplay is too much like modern Mario sunshine fluud controls
    unintuitive weapon firing
    motion controls
not friendly enough to newcomers who jump into multiplayer

overall i really was disappointed, i had hopes this would give me a satisfying shooter experience but instead i got something that felt stuck between FPS and a weird platformy art game. I loved the visual design and wanted to love the fact it gave a match win to territorial control, but the game ended up giving up the gameplay benefits mindless shooters and keeping the whoever kills the most in practice. i did not enjoy this game and it continued my disappointment in Nintendo releases for switch after Zelda. may not keep my switch now if Mario turns out this way.

Now, just like with Fortnite, I kept an open mind for this game. But I just couldn't. Just like with Fortnite, the online isn't very beginner friendly, and the single-player campaign is VERY lack-luster. The worst part is, I can't take it back to the store. So, the moral of the story? Shooter games don't target the casual gamers.

A couple quirks that Nintendo decided to go with for he game may have detracted more from other games, but Splatoon 2 is so dang fun, I can't get myself to care about minor annoyances.

    Pros:
    - New weapons, including the splat dualies, really mix up play styles.
    - New abilities seem to be much better balanced. None of the abilities give timed invincibility as many did in Splatoon, and are counterable without feeling useless.
    - Matchmaking is usually pretty quick and fair, but not without occasional issues.
    - Salmon run is a wonderful PvE addition to the game and fleshes out the experience as a whole
    - Single player campaign continues to add truly unique gameplay functions, and a relatively entertaining little story.
    - Splatnet 2 App is really useful, letting you see details from previous matches, and order unique gear from a marketplace
    - Music is once again FANTASTIC in this game, love the style of Splatoon's music, and this iteration stepped up the quality in my opinion.
    - Motion controls are very intuitive and accurate after a short "break-in" period of getting used to controlling a shooter in a new way. (I wish y-axis analog stick control wasn't forced to be disabled when motion controls were on, though)
    - Nintendo will be supporting the game with free maps and weapons for the next year, providing reasons to continue coming back.
    - Splatfests continue to be lots of fun and very rewarding for participants. #TeamKetchup

    Cons:
    - You've already heard it, I wish I could quickly change my weapons and/or gear between matches without leaving the lobby. Just a nice quality of life feature that would make it more fun to change up your playstyle.
    - Playing with friends is clunky. I don't have a whole lot of friends with Splatoon 2, but I wish it was easier to team up for online play. Journalist reviews will explain the strange excluded features better than I can if you don't know what I'm talking about.
    - Lack of useful chat options. "This Way", "Ouch" and "Booyah" just aren't enough many times. Quick chat options in Rocket League promote great communication between strangers on the internet, and something similar would be very useful in Splatoon 2.

One of the biggest hits was new Nintendo franchise Splatoon, a wacky MMO shooter involving squids, children and massive puddles of coloured ink. It was an incredibly addictive game and a huge hit for the Japanese gaming giant. With the recent high sales and praise of the Nintendo Switch, the company have now released a follow up simply titled Splatoon 2 (or in our office Spla2oon) exclusively on the Switch. The sequel features a better story mode, new online features and new and different ways to splat your opponents.

Playing in story mode, the games picks up a few months after the first one. With The Great Zapfish (the source of the Inkling’s power) being restored, things are going relatively well until Callie goes missing and surprise surprise so does the great Zapfish. Players get recruited as part of Agent 4 of the Squidling Splatoon to save Callie and retrieve the Zapfish (yet again!) at the Octo Canyon. The story mode this time around feels like a lot more love and attention has been given in comparison to the rushed first game. If you are not interested in playing online, just getting this game for the story mode is worth it.
When you first start the game, you are given a fairly in-depth tutorial so newcomers can get used to the controls, similarly I would recommend playing Story Mode as a great way to learn the controls and the best way to take down your opponents. Getting to know which weapon suits which character as well as recharging your ink, the coverage of the splatter and getting your speed up will ultimately benefit players when they reach online mode. This may look like a game for kids but it is far from it.

Playing Splatoon 2 online arranges players in teams of four with the goal of covering as much ground as possible in your chosen team’s coloured ink. Speed and ink-recharge are the skills you will need to be successful at these skills and working the controls to win an online battle (particularly against seasoned players!) The mix up of the colours in each round help not getting your teams colours mixed up and you also have the option to turn off motion controls in the settings menu (something I highly recommend!
f you want to use chat and social features there is a companion app for Smartphones, and while some have complained it is clunky and slow, I found no issues and enjoyed having it there next to me, and really when you think about it, when you play games in this day and age, having your phone next to you and constantly checking it is just part of our life now so it makes sense to put it on an app on a device we are checking anyway right? (that’s just my two cents!)

Splatoon 2 delivers a highly addictive and satisfying sequel for the Nintendo Switch system. Featuring intuitive controls, a more thought out story mode and a bunch of Splatoon themed accessories including controllers, amiibos and joy-cons, Splatoon 2 has taken the Switch by storm and after spending an embarrassingly large amount of hours playing online and with friends, this is another gem in the Switch’s crown as one of the most social and entertaining console’s that Nintendo have ever produced.

Splatoon 2 is a sequel in the same way pickles are a sequel to cucumbers. It doesn't do much different from the first game but does leave me feeling salty.

It's a decent game, the story mode is okay and the multiplayer is okay.

If they hadI missed out on experiencing Splatoon for the Wii U, so my experience with Splatoon 2 on the Switch is untampered by some complaints I've heard by people who did play it on the Wii U, namely the fact that they're calling it a sequel, though there's a sparsity of new features and overall it doesn't feel as though Nintendo heeded the feedback they received from the first game. If they had called it a "deluxe" edition, as they did with Mario Kart 8 on the Switch, rather than "Splatoon 2," I think the disappointment could have been avoided.

But luckily, this is the first experience I've had with the game, so my impressions are overall very positive, if number of playtime hours displayed on my Switch's profile are any indication, which would be 70 hours within just a month getting the game, and I don't see myself taking a break from it any time soon. I'll make a list of pros and cons, starting with the cons:

    Cons:
-there really should be more modes than there are. What is there is apparently fun enough to drain 70 hours of my life throughout the course of a single month, but with only four modes (five if you include Salmon Run, which is only available on specific days at specific times), it really does make you wish for more
-the single player campaign is fine, but there really is a lot more potential for it, given that the core gameplay mechanics are so unique. And locating the actual levels in each of the five worlds is irritating
-there are a lot of different loading screens in the community area, whether you walk into a shop, walk into the lobby, walk into the Salmon Run waiting area, or equip new gear. A loading screen pops up for everything
-the game does not do a good job of acclimating new players to the different features, and things you can do. There are some things I just recently found out about (after playing for a month), such as all the different things Murch can do for you, like ordering specific gear items you like that you see players in the community area wearing, or scrubbing slots, or collecting ability chunks, etc. That's probably my fault for not going out of my way to talk to the NPCs, but I still wish there had been a more comprehensive tutorial available somewhere (maybe there is, I just have to go out of my way to find it, I have no idea. Most informative and useful things to know in this game you need to go out of your way to find out about, which is frustrating)
-that freaking "talk show" that comes up EVERY time you turn the game back on, and is completely unskippable, wasting 45 second of my life on information that can me conveyed in three seconds, makes me want to rip my hair out. What the hell was Nintendo thinking when they made that unskippable, and why the hell has there not been an update allowing you to skip it after almost a year since the game was released?
-there isn't an option to save replays of matches. The screenshot button allows you to record up to 30 seconds of footage, but there's no way I can know something awesome is going to happen before I start recording. Really wish they would include a replay feature.
-I am not convinced it is conceivably possible to win a match if one of your team mates dips out last minute. One time I got stuck on a team of three and we made it within four percent of winning, but that is the closest I've ever seen it. Typically it's just a slaughter. It isn't as if their team has an edge over you, and you're simply fighting with the odds stacked against you. Nope. You're just done.
-no split screen competition of coop. I'd love to play it with my wife, but we'd have to get a second Switch and a second copy of the game, which is a shame.

All that being said, this is still some of the most straight up fun I've ever had with a game.

    Pros:
    -kids that are also squids
    -game mechanics are super unique
    -matches can be ridiculously tense
-you play as kids, and squids
-there may be a lack of modes, but the sheer amount of mileage you get out of such few modes is amazing
-customization options are expansive, but it never feels as though other players have an unfair advantage over you because they have better gear
    -First I'm a kid, then I'm a squid, then I'm a kid, then I'm a squid
-all of the control options feel good, whether I'm using joy cons, my pro controller, or handheld mode
-no lootboxes, no paywalls, no "pay to win" features. You buy the game, you play the game, the end
    -so many colors
-there are kids and there are squids and the kids are also squids

    Edit:
I thought I might retroactively change my score, because I wrote this review back when I had only spent around 15 hours with this game and I original scored it with an 8. I now have spent over 300 hours playing this game, and I'd feel dishonest not giving any game that managed to steal 300 hours of my life away a perfect 10.

So, when I heard Nintendo was making a sequel, I was...kind of confused. Sure, I really loved the first game, and I knew I would play this game, but I was shocked that Nintendo was making a sequel so soon (it's only been 2 years since the first one). On top of that, Nintendo is very rarely the one to settle for a sequel that's so similar to the first one, and that's what "Splatoon 2" was looking like. Even so, having played the game, I can say that Nintendo has succeeded once again.
As expected, "Splatoon 2" looks and plays great. Visually, it's absolutely gorgeous, and the game runs smoothly, as it should on a new and more powerful system. The game also remains just as fun as ever, the campaign's levels are still varied and exciting, the multiplayer is still fun and frantic, and the new modes and small changes are nice enough that the game does stand well next to the first one.
That said, my one small, minor criticism, and the reason I can't really comfortably give the game a perfect 10 is that, as I said before, the game is VERY similar to the first, so much so that this could've easily been a "Splatoon Deluxe" instead of a full-blown sequel. Oh, and while I'm glad Nintendo added voice chat this time around...why is it so cumbersome?
All that said, "Splatoon 2" is still a great game and a worthy buy if you're a Switch owner. I'm sure I'll still get plenty of longevity out of this game thanks to the Switch's portability.

I personally only attempted the campaign for any potential unlockables (hoping for something like Splatoon 1) but ultimately got fed up with the level section process. On the last world, it felt almost impossible to find just the entrance to the level.

Characters are a major draw too. A new set of hosts join you in map change announcements as well as my personal favorite Splatfests that occur monthly.

Nintendo promises two years of continual support for this title leaving little room to doubt that you won't get your money's worth.

Wish Nintendo would have more customisation of the controls to be able to set horizontal and vertical sensitivity seperate (on motion control, when aiming, up down is uber reactive but left right is not natural, requesting thumb input to aim sideways more than just a few degrees, it just doesn't work).

My original score on the game was a 4/10. After playing the game for a while I’m willing to bump up my score 2 points for not having mico-transactions, season passes, or charging for new maps. However, the matchmaking process is rubbish and I end up on a team that is either stomping on the opposition or being stomped. About 1/3 of the time there is a dropped player that dictates what side loses. It is less than satisfying to win a match only to see that the losing side had a zero point player. I’ve also been dropped from games with a “connection error”; when I start another match I’ve been greeted with a ban threat if I keep dropping. I haven’t rage quit this game yet. I have a stable internet connection (fiber optic) and I do not have connection issues with any other online game I’ve played on PS4 or PC. Considering the match making problems and dropped players I have to give the game a -1 point; the resulting delta then +1, so 5/10.

The game play was fun I really like the concept of a cartoon shooter that would be fun to play with my son. That being said there is no split-screen multiplayer mode. I could understand not supporting split-screen multiplayer for a game like Call of Duty but not a cartoon game that should share the same demographic as Mario Kart. With the exception of the very short campaign/tutorial the lion’s share of the game is online only; this becomes a problem when you find out Nintendo will be charging an annual fee for online play. On principal I’m not willing to pay full price for what is a yearly rental. Because the Switch doesn’t support voice chat it can be difficult to coordinate with your teem but that really didn’t hurt the game when I was playing it. I would have given this game a much higher score if it supported split-screen multiplayer and was either exempt from the online subscription fee or was a $40 game.

    - Players can’t leave match making while searching for a game; waiting times can be very long and the timer resets every time a player enters the lobby or turns off their game
    - Voice chat…
    - Players can’t create parties with their friends; chances are you’ll often be fighting against friends rather than with them

The game is a bit short on content but that doesn't matter since you can easily put 100 hours in the onlie gamemodes that currently exists. The thing that drives this up to a 9 for me is that this game is just plain adictiv and fun, the combat is super fast and easy to learn but still hard to master and there is always alot of room for improvement in skill. Truely a great game Expand

I own a Wii U and like it, but never played the original Splatoon and have looked forward to jumping into Splatoon 2 since I heard it would be launched this summer for Switch. Based on word of mouth, I expected a great game and wow, it delivered beyond my expectations!

I give a 10 only if a game is transcendent (Zelda BOTW) or it is positively addictive, which very few games really are. This game is absolutely addictive, and has officially replaced Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as my go-to when I want to blow off some steam with some arcade-style action.
    LOVE IT.

Splatoon 2 builds on the strong foundation of the first game but, while it has some welcome tweaks and additions, there are still a few inexplicable missteps that prevent it from being the true killer app for Switch shooter fans it could be. Mostly, it's just that playing and communicating with friends is still cumbersome and inefficient. Mostly, it's just that playing and communicating with friends is still cumbersome and inefficient. This is an integral ingredient in the appeal of online gaming for most people, so it's just baffling and frustrating that Nintendo seems resistant to doing it right.

Still, Splatoon 2 is a beautiful, creative, frenetic game in both multiplayer and single player experiences. The matchmaking variations are innovative and hectic fun well suited for either casual or competitive play and the new horde/swarm mode, Salmon Run, adds a welcome layer of depth to online options. The single player campaign is reminiscent of some of Nintendo's bests, offering the charm and progression on level to level basis of something like Mario.

Splatoon 2 is a great game - with just a few changes, it could have been a superb one.

Though never fun in real life, spilling ink all around is even more fun in Splatoon 2 than it was in the first game. Teaming up with your squid friends has never been better. But even though some weird Nintendo elements can drag the fun to a stall, everywhere that Splatoon 2 shines makes it a deserving heir to the original.

Splatoon 2 builds on what its successor did so well, with a much larger base of assets that has allowed Nintendo to provide more to consumers right off the bat.

Splatoon extended its content and has brought a funny storyline in the second episode. Both newcomers to the Switch and fans of the first game, this is a must-have for you. [Issue#277]
