If you enjoy beat-‘em-ups and are looking for a unique take on the genre, give Speed Brawl a look. Otherwise, I can’t recommend the game for more casual players as trying to clear screens as fast as possible is often easier said than done. Without a doubt, speed kills, but in this case, it would be nice to slow down a little.

I picked this game up knowing very little about it, hoping to fill the beat 'em up/brawler itch, but what I found was something surprisinglyI picked this game up knowing very little about it, hoping to fill the beat 'em up/brawler itch, but what I found was something surprisingly deep for the genre.

In addition to your standard 'punch bad guy in the face' game play we all know and love, you can eventually get different characters with their own strengths/weaknesses, lite RPG elements to help customize (IE equipment from shops giving stats and effects) as well as skill trees, and environments that really do help if you play smart and utilize them - there's a lot to love here. And in addition to all of that, speed plays a large factor - not only in your score and completing levels, but also even into how much damage you're dealing.

The art is colorful and fun, music is fitting, and the flavor of the game is entertaining. The devs took a kind of game that's been done a million times, did it well, and added some really neat stuff in the mix to put out something that really hasn't been seen.

That's not to say the game doesn't have a few shortfalls - I do wish, while there *is* co-op, that there was more to online play rather than 'add people to go through the campaign again' with you. There have been a few release bugs that are there, and while not game breaking,do effect the performance at times, which is a little rough when you're in a game about speed and combos. Still, the devs seem to be aware and very pro-active about all of this, so I do believe they will take care of it.

Bottom line is that there's way more to this than mashing buttons and bashing heads - there's a lot of other stuff here to enrich and make game play more challenging, and the art and tone of the game makes it a lot of fun on top of that. Definitely recommend this game to anyone .
