    The quality of the package in Mania Plus is so good that it is becoming one of the best, if not the best, Sonic game of all time.

    Sonic Mania Plus is a masterpiece of a game. Adding more content into an already-perfect game. With the added Encore mode, plus the addition of Mighty and Ray and better multiplayer support (up to 4 players), Sonic Mania Plus is by far the most definitive version of Sonic Mania and the best Sonic game in 10 years. An instant buy for anyone wanting to seek an amazing retro-styled platformer.

    Just can't believe how perfect this game has become, they've removed a bunch of bugs, added a LOT of stuff, it's incredible, the perfect Sonic game.

    Sonic Mania was already an awesome 2D platform game but with Sonic Mania Plus the game is just perfect. More stages to play, more characters each with unique gameplay to play and many more things to do it's simple : just buy it, to experience the amazing experience this videogame has to offer!

    Sonic Mania Plus managed to take the greatest Sonic game ever and make it better! With a $5 extra price tag (or $5 DLC depending on your preference) it really is the definitive edition of Mania! They even took the time to add tiny things like bug fixes, stage transitions for every zone and even a new bonus stage! The Sega Genesis reversible cover is another amazing touch. Just a littleSonic Mania Plus managed to take the greatest Sonic game ever and make it better! With a $5 extra price tag (or $5 DLC depending on your preference) it really is the definitive edition of Mania! They even took the time to add tiny things like bug fixes, stage transitions for every zone and even a new bonus stage! The Sega Genesis reversible cover is another amazing touch. Just a little tip, if you want to get Super Sonic, Tail, Knuckles, Ray or Mighty in Encore mode, then you have to be the master of Mania special stages so definitely practice!     So encore mode: 7 new special stages which are difficult. They are not nearly as easy as Mania Modes. Remixed stages with new color palettes. The new palettes really pour new life into the stages, and tweaked areas in zones make stages feel new enough without feeling completely foreign. New life system. You don't have lives per say but a shared life system where every time you die, the character you were currently using is lost and you immediately continue with the characters you have remaining. (think of shared stock in Subspace Emissary in SSB Brawl). You can recover characters in certain item boxes and in the new Bonus Stages, a pinball minigame like the bonus tables in Sonic Spinball crossed with the character select in Knuckles' Chaotix.

    So Mighty and Ray: Mighty is like an easy mode where Spikes don't initially hurt him, and he has a ground pound, which allows him to reach new areas below ground. Ray is like the cape in Super Mario World, and gliding is fun to control when you get the hang of it allowing for ridiculous speedruns of acts. There are new cheat codes that allow creative manipulations of gameplay and so much more. And that's not mentioning the godly music by Tee Lopes and the already great level design by Stealth, Taxman and the team already found in Mania. There's still more surprises in store, but they're more fun t be discovered in person than told about in text.

    Mania Plus truly is a golden return to form for Classic Sonic and something that can't not be skipped, for a Modern/Classic/Adventure Sonic fan or a fan of momentum platforming in general.    … Expand

    I thought Sonic Mania was amazing when it came out last year! Mania Plus continues to be just as great and makes us even more excited for the inevitable sequel!!!

    Love the new little details like the new cutscenes/stage background and color changes in encore mode!     The two new characters Ray and Mighty are fun to play; they fit right into mania
    Overall really love the DLC and encore mode, although I wish for a bit more like new bosses or one more map!!!
    The price point is excellent and if you do get the physical ver, you get all the goodies :)

Sonic Mania is a product of love, a collaboration of long time sonic fans and SEGA. From Tyson Hesse animation to Tee Lopes soundtrack passing by Hyper Potion music for the trailers we can feel the passion this game tries to convey. Pagodawest, Headcanon and ChristianSonic Mania should be praised not only for how awesome this game is but the context this project came out to existence. Sonic Mania is a product of love, a collaboration of long time sonic fans and SEGA. From Tyson Hesse animation to Tee Lopes soundtrack passing by Hyper Potion music for the trailers we can feel the passion this game tries to convey. Pagodawest, Headcanon and Christian whitehead did an amazing job of balancing the gameplay and gathering the memorable stages, bosses, gimmicks that we all loved in the 16 bit sonic era and put their own signature names on it.

    Sonic Mania is not only a celebration for Sonic fans but also to SEGA fans. This game is filled with Easter eggs and homages to what made SEGA beloved. Sonic Mania should be celebrated by all gamers not only because it's a very good game but also because it opens a new chapter in the gaming industry that companies like Valve used to practice and companies like Nintendo should be more lenient about (AM2R).

    Sonic Mania seems a portable friendly games which seems to be a perfect fit for the Nintendo switch. The small size of the game and its high replay value makes it a potential game that will never leave your switch drive.    … Expand

    It's been almost a year since Sonic Mania has been released to the world and everyone soon fell in love with the game and it's no secret that the team behind Sonic Forces admits loving Sonic Mania as well by connecting the events of the two games together for rather two epic games to play for the price of one.     This is the best Sonic the Hedgehog game ever made. It is what Sonic should be. Sega take note of this. Sonic was meant to be side-scrolling. But this is way better than Sonic 4, and the level design in this game is off the charts. Believe it or not it is better than Sonic 3 and Knuckles hooked together.

    Only con: The boss music is kind of silly compared to Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

    This game is a pure nostalgic trip. Even SEGA is scared to say that this is the best Sonic game ever made. The whole group of Mania dev's are genius!

    I didn't really enjoy this game. Its pretty hard. I've had it for almost a year and I haven't even finished it yet. I don't plan to finish it though. I still think it deserves to be the #6 Best Switch Game of 2018 I'm just not one of those people who love Sonic games.

    Firstly, I liked the game when I started to play it and how this game made such references to past Sonic games. I also enjoyed some of the surprises in it as well as how it worked as a retro game. I think it was a good idea for the franchise and that it was cool to bring back the classic Sonic to a starring role.
    On the other part, after finishing the game, I didn't feel the game in the same way as when I played it. Before its release, I had no problem with the remade stages. Later, on the contrary, I realised this idea made a drop in quality to the game. It contains just a few original stages while the rest are taken from the Genesis titles, making it look more like a levels compilation than a completely original game. My most disliked ones where Green Hill Zone and Oil Ocean. In the first case because it's been so repetitive how they re-added this stage once and over again in the series that it loses its effect as an iconic level for it. In the second case because it's boring in both aesthetically and musically; its remade version doesn't convince me neither. On the positive said, my favourite ones were Flying Battery and Hidrocity, which I still love since I played them in the Genesis.
    There is no much replayability at all, unless you want to beat the game with the different characters. You only have the Mean Bean Machine minigame, the Blue Sphere stages and the multiplayer. I liked these features but I think it could have been better if you added more to it like online matches.
    The Plus edition didn't improve it a lot. You could add more interesting characters like the Chaotix or Amy Rose. Just because SegaSonic the Hedgehog became obscure and it was never re-released doesn't mean Mighty and Ray deserved to be playable. Some stages are unbalanced with them such as Ray's flying ability. The new Encore Mode didn't add much to this game. Just the same Mania Mode stages with different layout and style. When I played it it, I felt I was playing the Mania Mode again. The new partner mechanic is OK, I like how you can switch between your characters. However, it doesn't offer much to it neither. One thing I consider cool is the 4-player mode though, as I mentioned before, it could have a online mode too. I also preferred more the Metal Sonic boss in Stardust Speedway in its previous version than in the new one here. It's just easier and, once again, you don't fight him directly.
    To end up, I would have liked if Mania Plus had more than just reusing or adding more to existing features. The only interesting feature for me was the new characters, even though I'm not a fan of Ray and Mighty. I consider this is not enough to release it in physical form. So yes, it's a good game but not one to consider it excellent or that it improved the franchise. Sonic Adventure and 3 & Knuckles are still better than this one.    … Expand

    I honestly hate to be a contrarian (again), but beyond new characters this game does nothing I wish it would. And even then, those new characters are still way too similar to Sonic. They honestly might as well make Sonic the only playable character.     Best Sonic game in years. The game engine delivers that classic Genesis Sonic look. The music by Tee Lopes is superb, it's reminiscent of the classic games but also new. Lots of content including many playable characters, minigames, levels, and modes. My one gripe with the game is that there should have been more original zones instead of leaning too much on the classics.

This game is not nostalgic for me; Despite that, I absolutely adore it. The gameplay, art style, and music are among the best and most polished in the franchise's history. Los niveles sacados de los juegos anteriores de Sonic están muy bien recreados y bellamente modificados mientras que, los nuevos niveles, están a la altura de cualquiera de sus predecesores.     I´ve never played any Sonic game before this one, and for my big surprise it is a really awesome game.
    The level design is so good and creative. Playing as Sonic an Tails an all of the characters is just so fun.
    I really appreciaded Sonic more than I did before, really awesome game.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's how I would sum up the Encore DLC:

    The additional characters (Mighty and Ray) are fun new additions to the game, though I will admit that Mighty is a bit overpowered.

    Encore Mode is a nice addition; the remixed zones feel familiar but also different.

    The 4 Player competition is also a nice add on, though I wouldn't personally use it.

    The lesser known addition (as far as I could tell) is that the Pinball Bonus stage normally found in Encore Mode can be used in Mania Mode if you get all of the gold Medallions.     Overall, Mania Plus is one of, if not THE best Sonic game so far. Every aspect about the game is near perfection. The Encore DLC is definitely worth your $5, and the physical version is a steal at only $30. I mean, it has a reversible slip cover, shiny outer cover, the 32 page art book, AND ON TOP OF THAT, includes Sonic Mania and the Encore DLC, again for $30. An amazing game at an amazing price.     With the addition of encore mode, this game is cemented as the best sonic game of all time. Exactly what 2d fans have wanted for 15 years. It is hard to think of anything more that could have been done to improve this game but with some well chosen additions, the package now feels complete.

    A further improvement on an already great game. Similar to the original trilogy on the Genesis in gameplay and appearance, the game goes back to the more looked up upon period of the series, and the add-on features extra characters, an encore mode, and with the collector's package you receive an art book, along with a beautiful looking package.

    This is my first Sonic game. I think it is enjoyable but not for everyone.

    Pros:
    Re-playable
    Music
    Non repetitive levels and bosses
    Difficulty (it rumps up quite quickly, some levels are challenging)

    Cons:
    It feels too much chaotic for me.
    Controls are not as sensitive as other platform games and (initially) feel weird (maybe it is because I am not so used to play Sonic games)

    I don’t really like modern sonic, but this isn’t just another nostalgia based review. As I’ve never played a sonic game before, I decided to pick this up on steam. I don’t regret it. The Encore Pack (I bought the original a month before Plus Released) was dirt cheap for the amount of content it has. As long as you get the hang of the controls, you’re in for a treat!

    what a great game. an expanded version of sonic mania, a great retro throwback to the series. definitely preferred to the sonic forces game released around the same time. makes me feel like i'm playing the games on the Sega genesis.

The Sonic Advance games on GBA released in the mid 2000s ensured that the series kept one foot in the 2D camp, whilst 2010’s episodic Sonic 4 was also a fun if unremarkable reminder of the recipe that made the original Genesis trilogy so popular.

    Sonic Mania takes things to a new level for the series. Enlisting the talents of talented hobbyist developer Christian Whitehead, Sega looked to the thriving online community to cultivate a title that stands out. It not only pays homage to those original games but also stands up today as an example in 2D game design and execution.

    If the graphics look to be taken straight from the 16-bit era, then that’s because they really were. Christian Whitehead made himself known to the Sega dev team due to his creation of the Retro Engine, a 2D game devkit created to facilitate development of self-made ports of older Sonic games. Impressed with Whitehead’s work, the Retro Engine was eventually used to create the official Sega mobile ports for Sonics 1, 2 and CD. The success of this early project is what has ultimately led to the development of Sonic Mania, built on the back of the same technology.

    The game plays beautifully; modern hardware ensuring that the frame-rate never stutters, which really makes a difference in creating that sense of speed the series is known for. The levels have been created with speed in mind and, given the amount of memory now available to the developers, they’ve now been able to create huge stages that allow Sonic to loop-de-loop and double back on himself giving a sense of freedom not possible on older consoles. The stages, whilst fundamentally left-to-right are sprawling areas with multiple routes to the finish, successive playthroughs allowing you to complete the same stage in completely different ways. The difficulty isn’t quite as high as in previous games, the confidence the dev team had in allowing the player freedom to run through levels in unique ways has meant that the game didn’t have to be bogged down with fussy jumping sections requiring pinpoint timing and accuracy. There are of course many sections where traditional platforming skills are required but the excellent level design has ensured that the tricky sections never impact on the flow of the game. This is a game made to keep players coming back after the final boss fight, the addition of a time attack mode (with online leaderboards) underscores this point. As does the ability to go back and play the levels with either Tails or Knuckles, whose individual abilities allow extra possibilities for navigating the game’s huge levels.

    Fans of the original games will be happy to see that the fundamental mechanics haven’t changed. Collecting rings increases your score – 100 for an extra life, and getting hit causes you to drop all of your rings, prompting a mad dash to grab them all again. The bosses are also an eclectic bunch, providing some variety from the main gameplay. Whether this is in the form of a game of Mean Bean Machine or fighting a giant robotic sandworm onboard a biplane, I found the bosses to be enjoyable and memorable once the final game was wrapped up.Pseudo-3D mini-games are also accessible from the main game world, which also pay tribute to the various (if at times misguided) attempts at implementing 3D during the Sonic series’ chequered history. These short stages include racing around a mode-7 style stage trying to chase Robotnik’s blimp or running through a giant chest board collecting blue balls and trying to avoid the red ones. These are the weakest part of the game, although the collectibles to be gained from completing these parts makes them worth the initial distraction.

    The soundtrack is certainly worth a mention, it’s jazzy dance riffs a fantastic nod to the original series as well as 90s club music in general. Several times I came away from the game with the level music stick in my head and the tunes did not grate upon revisiting the game for the umpteenth time. One more the one occasion I was reminded of the what-if story of Michael Jackson’s alleged involvement with the soundtrack to he original Sonic 3. The sound effects of the game are taken straight from the original games, the ring chime and robotic crashes and bangs have not changed from the 16-bit days at all.

    To summarize, Sonic Mania is an absolute must-have for fans of 2D platformers, the 16-bit era or action games in general. I found this to be an absolute perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch, perfectly playable on the small screen and looks fantastic on a full-size HD TV with its vibrant graphics and imaginative course designs.    … Expand

    Its very difficult to find anything wrong with this game, it looks, plays and sounds gorgeous. The stages are all vast and full of nooks and cranny's and the balance between set pieces and precision platforming is chef's kiss level. Seriously a great game, I highly recommend it.

If this game had like an opening tutorial or like a fun little opening movie explaining how sonic works, this would work a lot better in my opinion, unfortunately, the game lacks this, I would also like to say that some of the zones are really bad, the final world is harder then it should be which is fine in my opinion because most sonic games are like this, but the flying battery zone, and the volcano one, are really long and drawn out, both of these hardly have any speed sections as well making them underwhelming, honestly, after playing the first 3 zones of the game I don't feel like playing anymore if I start up a new profile, this game also has a bit of a lack of content, I wish they had 1 or 2 more unlockable modes like a sonic Spinball mode or something that relates to older 3d sonic games like 3d blast, also I know that this game is replicating Sonic 3, but not having a save point after each act is over is dumb. If you get a game over on the final boss you have to redo both act 1 and 2 of the final zone which can take anywhere from 10-25 minutes just to try again on the final boss, overall sonic mania is worth the $20, and if you can find it for $10 or less I would recommend it, it's one of the best Sonic game ever, and is well worth the price, but isn't really for everyone… Expand

    The game is an ideal length and difficultly not leading players too frustrated. The main campaign (with some extras) took about 15 hours. Completionists will devote more time (maybe 25hours).
    Encore mode felt a little like deja vu from the main mode and only did the first few zones to try other character mechanics.
    Couple of issues I had is about level speed/flow. There are not so often moments you the level will suddenly halt you for some tedious platforming and a badly placed spike or enemy. Luckily these are not too common. The other factors is, although the level design is ingenious, I found the levels to be far too long and can time out or get close to timing out due to the levels length. It needs to be slightly smaller or free-flowing to speed though.

There have been very few masterpieces released in my lifetime, the word masterpiece is something that I do not say lightly - this game is 100% a masterpiece. The best sonic game ever made by far, and I am VERY critical of the sonic franchise. With an asking price of 19.99 (or 24.99 with plus) there is no excuse not to check this game out. I keep thinking of a way that I can critique this game, a way to point out the games flaws and give an honest review - but I feel that I am being honest when I say this game is perfect.     This game is awesome.I don't know why it has only 8.1 user score.This is the best classic sonic game.It has nice zones,nice environments 5 characters,one of the best sonic final bosses and it has the encore mode

The new Encore DLC extends the game's playability including a reskinned surprise-filled mode of the OG Mania Mode, two new characters, Mighty and Ray, and also you can now bring up to 4 friends to competition with this upgrade!

    My rating? 10/10. It brings back the Genesis/MD era in a perfect and clever way,    If you have played the original Sonic Mania you definitely have to try this out.     Sonic Mania Plus, for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, etc. (Maybe it will come for PS5 and Xbox Series) is a great game that deserves some recognition still to this day.
    And to the actual review, the levels that were slow paced, are now SUPER fast, even the fast going levels are faster!!
    The level design is just right, the same thing goes for the graphics, now we can finally play just as Tails or just as Knuckles, with debug mode, we can play just as the new characters: Ray and Mighty!!
    Sure there is another remake of Green Hill, but the combination of acts 1 and 2 from the original, makes it better, and Act 2 is awesome, the Death Egg Robot is no longer obnoxious.
    Chemical Plant still has the grooviest tunes, and its super exhilarating, and Mean Bean Machine is finally back!.
    Studiopolis Zone has a great miniboss and its a blast to run through.
    Flying Battery is back and now its stronger. As a sky level, its fast and slow which makes varied and i like it.
    Press Garden its like Studiopolis: its a blast to run through and feels like a lost zone which is way past cool!
    Stardust Speedway is back, and the Metal Sonic Boss is brilliant.
    Hidrocity is a water level but unlike Labyrinth Zone, it has a darn well level design, and Good music, even gives you the chance to be the boss of the zone!
    Mirage Saloon is unique in every way and its SUPREMELY NOSTALGIC!!!
    Oil Ocean is as underrated as in Sonic 2, but now its more advanced.
    Lava Reef feels just right, the music slaps and its extremely underrated too!
    Metallic Madness isn’t a maze anymore! And it’s not going for too long too!
    And Titanic Monarch is infamous for being one of the most confusing zones! But it’s just great, the level design isn’t random like Super Mario Bros 2 from Japan, and that music... ITS JUST THE BEST. Do i need to add more?
    And the rest of things are fun. Blue Spheres is back and it NOW has a fun gimmick! And the extra modes are cool too.
    You get to hear the entire and PHENOMENAL soundtrack with one of those.
    Encore mode is basically the same but it motivates you to get an alt ending!
    And the last thing: the special stages. THEY ARE FUN AGAIN!
    It's models are based off in the 90s stages and they are just perfect. The difficulty on these is just right as well as the difficulty of the entire game, the controls are fluid and the music just makes it almost perfect. Because the physics are kinda slippery. BUT IT DOESNT MATTER.
    This game is so close to perfection, and that’s why you should buy it. Also it costs 25 dollars!! (Game and DLC together)
    There isn’t really anything that’s bad with this game and even if you played 1000 times the same stages, they never get old. So my final opinion is: By all means, BUY THIS GAME (The intro is just amazing too)

    as a classic sonic fan this game was perfect to me they brought back my favorite zones such as green hill, checmical plant, and hydrocity zone and also added new ones like studiopolis, press garden zone, and mirage saloon. This is the perfect sonic game.

    Sonic Mania Plus builds up on Sonic Mania and tops it off. The ensemble of the two builds the best 2D Sonic game available and the Encore mode brings a new approach to the plot. While the extra characters don't bring any significant change to the way the game is played, Sonic Mania Plus is essential to any committed fans of the supersonic blue hedgehog.

    Sonic Mania Plus keeps the essence of Sonic Mania and extends the experience with interesting contents, although they may be insufficient for those who already have the digital version of the game, so this version is recommended for players who did not buy the original game and / or lovers of cartridges.
