Salt and Sacrifice is the follow-up to Souls-like dark fantasy RPG, Salt and Sanctuary.

A once-peaceful kingdom is plunged into chaos by encroaching tides of Mages: merciless embodiments of elemental chaos. The Marked Inquisitors, a doomed force of the condemned, once again mobilizes to stand against the existential threat of Magic. A buried secret threatens to bring an ancient empire to utter ruin.

As a Marked Inquisitor, you'll journey through the western frontier: pursuing, hunting, and obliterating the Mages that roam the realm.

You may be bound to the Inquisition, but your choices are yours. Take up the hunt with your fellow Inquisitors: all Mages must die.

If you own a Switch or Steam Deck and never played Salt and Sacrifice before, your wait has been worth it. If you enjoy Metroidvanias, Soulslikes, and have wanted a blend of Monster Hunter in games like that, this is an easy recommendation. While I think Inti Creates’ Dragon Marked for Death is better in its current state, I welcome more games trying to blend in Monster Hunter with their own flavor. After a few updates, Salt and Sacrifice will be essential. Now it is excellent with some caveats.

Salt and Sacrifice isn’t completely perfect—it suffers from some weird decision-making regarding boss speeds and invincibility frames, and it doesn’t come with the same kind of polish that larger companies are capable of applying to games. Fortunately, none of this really stops that from making it a solid game. All-in-all, Salt and Sacrifice proves itself to be a worthy successor to Salt and Sanctuary, and its focus on Mage hunts helps it to stand tall as a unique (and fun!) 2D soulslike.
