I'm new to the SaGa franchise and I'm happy I picked this title to dive in deep. You have 4 protagonists, each with their own story in the same universe. Choices you make along the way effect what happens in your playthrough and I. Other characters stories. The combat is turn based strategy and absolutely brutal. It takes ti.e getting use to it as the tutorials are pretty minimal. There isI'm new to the SaGa franchise and I'm happy I picked this title to dive in deep. There is no handholding and progress is non-linear some of the voice acting and setup is a little dull but it picks up later on. Expand

While SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions is definitely not a game for anyone, those who can approach it with an open mind and a willingness to meet the game on its own terms will find this to be one of the finest RPGs ever made. The story is minimalist on purpose, the progression can be obtuse, and the difficulty can be extreme. When you can break past that initial wall, you’re treated to an RPG that cherishes player choice and exploration. The gameplay is addicting to its core, and it’s very rare to see an RPG as meticulously thought out like this. It lived up to all the hype for me and is perfect for genre fans looking for a breath of fresh air.

I love so many of the ideas behind Scarlet Grace and its inventive nature, but it can’t assemble those elements into a consistent experience. Scarlet Grace has its flaws and frustrations, but it also colors outside the lines of the genre. Sometimes that’s good and exciting. Other times, it’s just scribbles.

When all is said and done, SaGa: Scarlet Grace: Ambitions proves why the franchise is often overlooked in favor of its more familiar RPG cousins. The battle system requires much trial and error, and many optional scenarios, party members and outcomes may be skipped over entirely due to the extra challenges they offer for newcomers. Yet there is no denying the dense amount of strategic systems to play around with as well as the massive amounts of replayability thanks to its multiple characters and outcomes. Patient gamers will be rewarded with an RPG experience that is both familiar and fresh at the same time, not to mention another hundred hours to sink into the Switch as it continues to be the ultimate haven for the genre.
