Unlike the vast majority of EastAsiaSoft's recently published titles, Rule No. 1 stands out as being perhaps the most praiseworthy release in their repertoire this year. Originally released on Steam, the game made it's transition to Switch remarkably well.

Originally released on Steam, the game made it's transition to Switch remarkably well.
Pros:
- The moment-to-moment gameplay is addictive by nature and extremely fun. It's hard to deny the appeal in running, jumping and dashing around like a maniac fighting enemies with an arsenal of handguns, shotguns and other toys to satisfy your violent urges.
-The main character Rule has a suprising amount of voiced in-game dialogue. From her humourous pause menu quips to her frequent pop-culture references, she provides the game with a pleasant sense of personality and her interjections never feel forced or obnoxious.
- The game offers a good number of extra modes completely in the service of replay value, ranging from Competetive and Arcade modes, a "God Stiletto" mode which lets you run around with a powerful rapid-fire dagger weapon from the get-go and a Basketball free-throw mode, most of which have Leaderboards to compete against the communities high scores.
- An overarching EXP system spread across all the game's modes in the form of small green cubes gathered from defeated enemies and crates is present, which are used for players to unlock Gallery images, including some tasteful NSFW pictures if so inclined to put the effort in to earn them.
- The game is very reasonably priced, going for a meager $5.99 on Switch even while not on sale. While not as cheap as other EastAsiaSoft published titles like Project Starship, the massive quality bump this game has over those titles justifies the price.
Cons:
- As a holdover from its PC roots, the game has absolutely no Controller Rumble or Haptic Feedback of any kind. While the issue doesn't affect gameplay much, the guns have a tendency to feel much more hollow without it and damage done to the player isn't conveyed as easily whenever it happens.
- There is no listing of the controls in-game, nor is there the option to remap them if needed. This can have the issue of the player not knowing the full range of abilities at Rule's disposal and could have you spend hours or longer without knowing about them.
- With how fast paced the gameplay is, it is extremely easy for enemies to damage you from off-screen or attack you from behind in cheap manners. The game doesn't have any sort of radar system to alleviate this issue either, so at times it can feel as though enemies come from nowhere and gang up on you.
- While the enemy designs are good, the variety of enemies faced is rather lackluster and as a result you'll be fighting the same bouncing cube enemies and scantily clad zombie girls for the majority of your time with the game.
- Despite the ESRB rating of M, the game contains an undisclosed amount of censorship per Nintendo's guidelines. This is mostly contained within the game's promotional artwork and main menu screen and doesn't appear to be present elsewhere. The unlockable Gallery items still contain scenes of nudity, but it's along the lines of what was present in a game like Cyberpunk 2077's character creator and not overly excessive.
It's important to note that most of the game's issues are overall quite small and don't hamper the enjoyment much, but are just prevalent enough to keep it from getting a higher score. Despite this, Rule No. 1 is well worth the price of admission and is a worthwhile title to add to your collection to kill time or while waiting for a download to finish. The transition to consoles was done with great care, and with any luck the consoles could eventually be blessed with the game's vastly superior sequel Rule No. 2 as well.… Expand
