Gorgeous, soothing and challenging at times. Lovely to get stuck in this forest with its endearing themes and widely set up puzzles.

I bought this game because of the stellar reviews, and I am disappointed.

The mechanics are awkward. Moving around feels slow, and sometimes things that should work don't, till you try them again. The style of the game is back and forth and back and forth to get a new item which enables you to get another item, run over here, run over there, run back here again. It got old pretty fast

The style of the game is back and forth and back and forth to get a new item which enables you to get another item, run over here, run over there, run back here again. It got old pretty fast for me. This became almost tedious in the second phase of the game. Also, some of the puzzles have weird solutions (as opposed to clever). However, the mechanics shift a bit in the third phase of the game, and I enjoyed that much more.

OTOH, I do appreciate the overall story and the graphics.

The gameplay style and level of the puzzles, and even the fairytale quality of this lend itself to playing with kids (or a game FOR kids), but... there are some scary parts that would not be good for some kids, including monsters that come after you.

I finished this in a day, FWIW, though it was a longish day.

Update: I've thought about this more and here's a relevant facet for me about not quite enjoying the game. I tend to prefer an adventure game when there are different sorts of tasks that you can work on when you're in a different mood. In a lot of games, you can run around gathering things, or you can focus on leveling up, or there are sometimes "big tasks" and "little tasks". This game is mostly the running around little tasks, to my mind (and the puzzles are not especially fun), and that's my issue here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the kinda game that has its highs really high, and its lows pretty low as well.
I have only played it on Nintendo switch and beat it within a weekend. 7/10: I would play it, but never again (even if it’s not a puzzle game).

You can easily tell that this game is made with love. For sure. The storyline is so touching, and arranged in a beautiful way. Characters’ personalities are vivid and real, such as the pickle-holic dad that seems too depressed to stay awake until his home got destroyed by Roki. You will appreciate the emotion journey when you finished the game.

Artwork? Phenomenal. The visual language in this game is just so gorgeous. Details were carefully designed in the graphic too. When you are in the wolf vision, you will need to navigate around by peddle on a cookie. And when the girl stepped on the cookie, the cookie just sinked slightly. That is a very nice touch! You will see this kinda details a lot within this game.

Puzzles are good too, the majority of them are pretty logical, so you would find them where you think they should be.

    The not-so-good part:

First, this game is a heavy subtitle reader. I mean I get it, the producer wants to use the dialog to make the story line complete. And important hints are given in conversations. I get it. But having to press A button for every-single-sentence is ridiculous, especially for the beginning and the end.

“Where are you” Press A button,
    “Go peeing” Press A button,
“Wake up papa” Press A button,
“Time to climb” Press A button.

    You cant even skip them!

It’s just so very slow. There are a lot of the conversations that can be packed in animations. I sincerely don’t understand why they didn’t do it. Instead, they think it’s better for you to press A button hundreds of time for meaningless dialogs.

2: Loading is extremely frequent and takes tons of time, breaking the whole game into pieces. For a puzzle game that is trial-and-error based and does require you to travel multiple rooms/sections for even the simplest missions, the loading time is unbearable for an inpatient S.O.B. like me. Especially for the last Chapter, every time you walk our a room, there is a 8-second loading. You may end up playing the game for 3 second but wait for the loading for 8 second and then another 3 second of playing followed by another 8 second of load. I truly don’t understand how can this game loads much more frequently than Zelda or BioShock. (Note: I was playing the very first version of this game right after it’s released, so they could optimize that in updates.)

This two points made this game unnecessarily slow to play.

If you have never played it, it’s definitely worth a try. But there are many times I just want to abandon this game due to this slow gameplay design. I only continued till the end because I spent 16 dollars on it.

Mixed feeling: Great story. Great graphics. Good puzzle and two-character-to-control design. Terrible game play design. It’s like playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on a PC from 2004: The game is great , but your user experience might be really shirty.

Röki has all the charm you'd expect from a point and click adventure, mixed in with a modern twist. The story is set round a daughter, Tove and her incredible adventure through a fantasy tale with her little brother. Featuring some of the Monster they only dream of. It feels perfect on Switch, each scene looking like a postcard. With easy to use controls and a beautiful soundtrack.

I own this on both Steam and Switch. It looks fantastic on the Switch and really suits the handheld experience, though it looks great on my TV too. Absolutely loved the characters and the dynamic between them!
The setting is very atmospheric and all-in-all it's a lovely adventure with a lot of heart. A couple of tricky puzzles but they feel satisfying to unravel! Highly recommended!

I've always been a fan of the classic point & click adventure games of old including the Monkey Island & Broken Sword series of games. With the Nintendo Switch release it was an instant purchase & l'm incredibly happy to say the game is an absolute delight! The story is the real highlight weaving a surprisingly deep & heartfelt story with Scandinavian folklore & it is completely engrossing.

The game mechanics work incredibly well & thankfully the puzzles & solutions are not too ridiculous which you often find within this genre & only a couple of times were i truly stuck & that was down to me not exploring properly & missing an area i could investigate.

I'll also add that the visuals are gorgeous too, almost like a painting coming to life & i loved the little touches such as mushrooms popping back into the ground when you get too close. It really made the forest feel very alive.

Too conclude, this is easily one of the best indie game releases of this year, with plenty of game on offer too. It's a must have for the Nintendo Switch & I hope we see this genre continue to make a rivival. I very much look forward to what the team creates next!

I played through this game over the course of a week, falling in love with it almost immediately. The delightful art style mixes old school puzzle solving (reminiscent of Monkey Island) with intriguing Scandinavian folklore. The Switch proved the perfect device to play this game.

    2. the puzzles are really well designed, I never felt like it's insulting my IQ nor it's mocking my capability. I like that you really have to read carefully or talk to certain NPCs to learn more about what to do next, it kept me in the loop
    3. the visuals are outstanding

    Not so good stuff:
    1. Tove talks way too much. every time I use an item or pick up an item, she has something uninteresting and unremarkable to say, cutting them does absolutely nothing to the story or character development. it's just so annoying sometimes when solving a puzzle, it slows me down so much
    2. Forced animation. whenever you enter or leave a room or climb down or up a ladder, there is an animation. I don't need to see this animation for the 5000th time, as if the loading screen wasn't enough to slow me down
    3. the notebook is not fully utilised. there are a few cases when the clues are not written down in the notebook until AFTER I've solved the puzzle. by then, I don't need the clues anymore, so what's the point...

    Bad stuff:
    1. this is to any game developer out there, please, PLEASE, don't use fade-in fade-out effects for dialogue boxes. It is atrocious.

A well-assembled puzzle game that mimics an open-world RPG in the size of both of its primary maps, where you are presented a massive tangle of problems and obstacles and slowly unravel them one by one. It’s a very satisfying feeling to get the item you’ve been looking for for SO long, and to put it in its home, opening the way forward.

    Good:
—Interesting cast of characters and monsters to meet. You never really know what is around the next corner.
—The puzzles were fun and generally fair, although on the Switch Lite there were a few items that were so small my wife and I weren’t able to see them. We had to use a guide to find out where the item we were missing was.
    —My wife liked the music.
—The art direction works for the style of story.

    Meh:
—The story doesn’t have any twists or turns, really. Even the ending is not ‘surprising’ so much as just a resolution.

    Bad:
—The final level overstayed its welcome a little bit. Actually, honestly, when we finished the first level, we were surprised that the game was continuing—it had already been so long that the game could have ended there and we would have been content. The second level was good, though, and we enjoyed it, but with how simple the game’s mechanics are, it was a bit lengthy.

All in all, a game we enjoyed and do recommend.

It has a nice pace to it and the puzzles are not too difficult that some younger player might struggle, yet challenging enough to test your brain.

For me there were strong Simon the Sorcerer and The Secret of Monkey Island vibes. If you like those games, you will love this. If you are younger and haven’t ever played those games, give this a try anyway. It’s a great title for the Switch and a great addition to your game collection.

The game is basically picking up objects and delivering them to the creatures or using them to solve puzzles/get to other areas.

I bought this game because I liked the art style and I wanted a somewhat relaxing game, and I think that I got what I wanted. It looks really beautiful and you get lost in their world for a while and feel like you're a kid inside a story so if you want something chill, this is a good choice.

The only thing lacking for me in this game is a memorable soundtrack, and overall I felt like the ending was a little weak. But I still had a lot of fun playing it and it feels really satisfying when you figure out what items to use where and you manage to progress, and I feel like it's great value for money if you buy it on sale :)

Very "chilled" game. I actually started it a year ago.. got stuck and came back to it after an 8 month break.

The puzzles are very well thought out and you do need to think a bit however there is a lot of "back and forth" and, as is common with this type of game, you do find yourself walking around clicking on anything looking for the next door to open up etc.

    Overall a fun experience.

It's obvious that Röki has a certain ability to touch plyers in their souls and that's clear from the very beginning. With a plot and development that feel anguishing, solitary, but also comforting and reassuring at times, this point and click adventure may not be the most ambitious production ever made in the history of gaming but this shadowy fairytale earned its place on the collections of Nintendo Switch owners.

Incredible art and animation lift Röki up even without any particularly exciting mechanical design present (though what is there is very good). If you don’t enjoy point and click adventures you might find Röki lacking, but otherwise, this is an enjoyable and touching tale.
