Jul 14, 2026River City Saga: Journey to the West brings together the classic Chinese myth and the Kunio games under the form of an action roguelite and as odd as that may sound, the game's comical approach, quirky visual style and immediate combat satisfaction will make players feel right at home. There's plenty of skills to learn and movements to perform, and the game's formula follows the Kunio legacy. At the same time, there's a feeling of repetitiveness that makes itself felt too quickly, and the lack of cooperative multiplayer is hard to understand. The combat is fun, but a more ambitious depth would work wonders for the game's roguelite structure.

It will take hours of attempts and upgrades to reach the end, but even after finishing it, replayability remains high—not only due to the experimentation with various builds and the addictive quality typical of the best roguelikes, but also because the levels become more complex and a "true ending" can be unlocked by completing the game a second time.
