I have always been a fan of this game from the time I first played it a Norm's Milkbar on Mosley Street, Strathfield. I even have a arcade PCB ready to go. So i was very excited to see this remake of the game. I think you need to look at this remake with that lens; an old arcade game remade.

The core of the game is a platform game using 5 different characters which have different abilities and not all are available at the start. As you work through the levels you gain access to new characters. Each character has a hammer with different attack levels as well as a jump and float mechanic. There has been a slight upgrade to the game mechanic as you can hover now by holding down the jump button as well as the original mechanic which was to hold up on the joystick following a jump.
The new additions to the arcade experience are the options for updated graphics and widescreen, both of which can be turned off and on on the fly. The widescreen is an excellent addition and opens the game up quite a bit. The new graphics don't stray too far from the original's excellent pixelart graphics and the animation is very good. If you compare it to the update graphics of Ultra Streetfighter II which looked a little like a well animated flash game, the new Psychic 5 graphics are less jarring on the eye which is probably a result of simpler animation requirements.
The core gameplay remains the same and there are plenty of descriptions out there.
The game remains fun and frantic with a great scoring system which provides excellent replayability. The witch seems much easier to hit in this version compared to the original arcade version.
New additions:
You can read the website for all the details but the time attack and survical modes are great two player addistions. There is also an extended storey with new levels and characters which are essentially reskinned original characters but you get them in a different order now. The new boses are hard but generally fun. There is also a new charge/throw attack available with the new characters.
Overall, I think this is a excellent remake of the game with plenty of new additions that improve on the old gameplay. If you liked the arcade game then you will really like this remastered addition. Hence the score. The overall arcade experience is good. Its not the best game ever made but it was fun at the time and fun to play now with plenty of hidden secrets and scoring options that will take you a while to master. If all the remakes of the arcade games were this good, I would be very happy.… Expand
