I think this one may be one of the worst mainline Pokémon ever created.

The game is one of the most linear experience of the entire franchise, even more than the original Red and Green on Game Boy, and the game general design is bland, slow, uninteresting. After a few hours in, there was nothing that motivated me to play the game more since all there was to know and do was throwed at the player face during the first hour and that was it. Nothing more is introduced after the first hours of gameplay, nothing. It never changes, it never tries to give you something new.
The game is so easy, it's basically a button mashing game since your Pokémon will always be 15 or 20 levels over the average enemy.
The only good thing about the game is that there's a decent degree of personalization, from your team of Pokémon to your character clothes, and catching 'em all is less frustrating than past games thanks to the high catch rate and how easy is to find any species.
As for the story, it's mediocre even for the series standard: the character had potential that is just not used at all. Their only purpose is to get destroyed by the player.
Kinda forgettable soundtrack (Idc Toby Fox made one OST, that's not gonna change the fact I don't remember 3/4 or the soundtrack), dull and lifeless art direction and the worst online interface I've ever saw in a videogame.
Also, bad graphics, bad performance. A mess of a game...

Pokémon has been on a steady decline for years in terms of quality but this was undeniably the breaking point. I know it’s all been said before but Dexit should have NEVER happened. Cutting major content while increasing the price of your product is always an L & I don’t care how many Nintendo apologists throw themselves into the fire over this pile of crap. This game should have been delayed for another year at most to get it right & it’s incredibly frustrating because there’s glimmers of hope in this trainwreck. The gym battles are actually an event this time & got me hype everytime, the visuals don’t always look terrible in spots, the new Pokémon roster took some getting used to but there are many gems among them like Appletun & Toxtricity, & I did enjoy the max raid system a lot more than I thought I was going to. At this point in the game’s lifespan I’m completely burned out on just about everything though. Despite my criticism, I played this game for 400 HOURS. That’s mostly from shiny hunting in max raids & being the only new Pokémon game out in a while. The DLC is overpriced tbh but the Crown Tundra alone was infinitely better than anything else this game had going for it. My biggest problem with this game’s existence is the pitiful excuses the developers gave for its shortcomings. Focusing on “higher quality animations” as a reason for cutting over half the Pokémon in the dex is a load of bull, especially since we got very few of those animations in the final product. Then adding some of them back later saying “it was always planned this way” is damage control 101 & y’all know it. Pokémon is a stagnant bubble waiting to burst & the sooner they get GameFreak’s crap together, give them a workable budget & timeframe, then they can maybe avoid a potential Pokècrash. Because this is unacceptable. I can’t believe this is the same studio that gave us classics like Platinum, HGSS & Black n White. While the game can be fun at times & has things going for it, it pales in comparison to the rest of the series (I’d still rather play this than any Gen 1 game though). Summing up some bulletpoints on my thoughts of the game below, for reference this is after beating both ScVi 3 times and going back to SwSh after. I did not get / play the DLC as the base game offered so little there was no incentive to prolong this.

Game is always on local wireless, this massively hinders connecting to wifi as it will frequently bug out and fail to connect to network after the game is open. This feels like a massive oversight for something that the developers forced on the game.

Gameplay is very linear, moreso than Gen 2 and possibly even more linear than Gen 1 which is a very sad downgrade. The main story only took me roughly 20-24 hours to beat and the postgame did not offer much more; at what I feel was a moderate play pace.

Postgame- After beating the game, gameplay massively falls off and feels very unmotivating. Farming the battle tower may appeal to some, but its gatekept behind needing to clear the BT for the currency (BP) to get the items that you need to clear the BT; which feels very outdated and counter-intuitive. You can clear all / most of the tower with provided rental teams which further detracts from the experience as by time you can make your own team with your own mons, you already beat everything. You can aim to complete the pokedex, breed, and shiny hunt; but this is nothing new or exciting from previous games really; and aside from team building for the BT it feels pretty pointless to build up mons. The game introduced raid dens, but they didn't feel at all appealing personally.

Performance - I've encountered more performance issues with SwSh (~40hrs) than I ever did with ScVi (>1000hrs).

Graphically, it is a change for the better. The wilderness area is a beta, it is very underused as for the story. Compared to the rest of the Pokemon games, it seems to be lacking in some aspects. I hope they use this base well for the future.

Pokemon blue, red, yellow, gold, silver and crystal are easily some of my favorite games of all time. I have replayed them countless times. I have waited for 25 years for a 3D pokemon game and this game was an insult to any lifelong, diehard pokemon fans. I don't have enough space to list everything that is wrong with this game so I'll keep it short.

This Game Is Not Fun. Plain And Simple.

Shield certainly has several flaws, but it also brings many new interesting Pokemon into the series. The biggest flaw is that you can blast through the game with seemingly no challenge, as it is easy to level up your Pokemon to level 60 before beatiflng the first couple of gyms. This ruins most of the game, but the Wild Area and new Pokemon make the game better.

Fun and addictive game that preserves the essence of the Pokemon saga. the attempt to implement a more open area is a bit mediocre. As a negative point, the caves are very uninspired. The implementation of raids can extend the life of the game ideal for play with your friends.

This eventually got doubled-down on by Scarlet and Violet. Now outside personal biases, they also even went as far as to interfere with the singles battling experience for millions of players alike, thanks to their insertion of the 20 minute battle time, the effects of dynamax, and the games having an absolute joke of a battle facility. I cannot forgive Pokemon Sword and Shield. These games were a massive step down for the series, and served as evidence that the makers of Sword and Shield did not care about the players involved. They made dexit to improve animations, improve graphics, and improve the overall state of pvp battling, when all 3 ended up regressing from games we had a full National Dex in. Need I say more? To defend these games, you must attack large departments of the Pokemon community. I'm sorry but that's the truth. How these games ended up was used to easily predict the state of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as well as leave less room for mystery regarding Scarlet and Violet. If you care about the Pokemon community and want Pokemon games to get better from here, this is one of the few games that need to outright get rejected. I can't even say this about any game prior to Sword and Shield. Expand

The "main story" unfolds by itself without us havin any role to play. There is no epic moment, no plot twist, no real story after all. The game is much too easy, so much so that I tried to add more difficulty by myself. When I remember Pokemon Blue or Silver, even Black... Did they try to makes peoples dumb and lazy by avoid the frustration of difficulty ? And what about difficulty options ?! There is no options to organize Pokemon Boxes. It's that hard to make ?! The list is long and it really is a beautiful mess. Because of laziness, lack of time or developers ? I don't care. Releasing a product like this is insulting. When I see that they added content that should be in the base game for 25€, I find it disgusting. There are no excuses, Game Freak don't put any effort on it, it's just easy money. I bought it second-hand years after its release because it's the only game on Switch that has all my favorite creatures and despite everything, it's not so bad next to Pokemon Scarlett Violet, that's to say the level of this last game. The story-where to begin? They highlighted gyms, even though they were gone for, like, 4 years. Whatever. This chairman guy sees potential in you, and same as the champion. So you join the Pokemon league. Oh boy! Pokemon games always have at least satisfactory stories, but this one makes no sense.

Pokemon games play very similarly. Don't fix something that isn't broken, right? Well, it gets stale. These games have become more and more linear, and you don't get to do decide your fate... at all. It becomes very, very, VERY boring. There is an open-world area called the wild area. I think that it is the predecessor to Legends: Arceus or Scarlet & Violet. But it's just so worn in and small. 6/10 gameplay. Way too boring.

The presentation isn't great. It doesn't load that well. If you're expecting a game that looks good and runs well, like Super Mario Odyssey, don't be surprised if it's not what you want. It doesn't load that well, look good, and runs at 30 fps. The music is pretty good, though. Toby Fox composed a song. 7/10 presentation. Nothing to say.

It's content is a bit light. The main adventure is too easy, and takes 10 hours. The post-game takes about 5 hours. Then you can "Catch Em All!" and shiny hunt. Yeah, this should be a 40 dollar game. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker cost that much. I didn't play it, but I hear it has a lot of content. 6/10 content.

It is way too linear, and what was good in it is way too worn in. I don't get why Scarlet & Violet has a lower user score. It is ambitious, big, and creative. Gen 8 was pretty good, but this game wasn't. I'm sorry, everyone in the U.K.

The graphics do not bother average players. A good chunk of people have been hating on every single Pokémon game since X and Y for no real reason. They have no idea what they actually want. They just like to complain.. so do yourself a favor and ignore most of these negative reviews. Shield is fun,

The game has very good ideas that it did not know how to take advantage of, the high points are overshadowed by the lowest points, so the game remains a weak product, which hardly supports itself, it is a strong step back then the small advance that had been achieved in the seventh generation.

this game is a prime example on why you should only trust user reviews and never critic reviews.

dexit nixed a ton of pokemon, including fan favorites. then gamefreak released two dlcs (which combined totaled the cost of the game itself) whose only real draw was the inclusion of pokemon missing from the main game. But even with these DLC, the dex is still missing huge swaths of pokemon.

But even with these DLC, the dex is still missing huge swaths of pokemon. it leads me to believe that dexit was not only motivated by laziness, but by greed - the DLC was always the plan.

the plot was nonexistent, and the games mechanics come nowhere near being able to make up for it. the main enemy team is completely unrelated to the main antagonist - the main antagonist whose motivations were nonsense and who was only revealed to be the antagonist in the last hour or so of this 20 to 30 hour game.

im giving it one point to acknowledge the only good trait about the game: the setting design for the locations were all very strong. its the only strong thing about the game. if it werent for PLA i would have been sure that this spelt the end for the pokemon franchise

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pokemon Sword and Shield is perhaps the most controversial game of Generation 8. I remember hating this game during my first play through back in high school. With its overpriced DLC and its lackluster post game content. But while taking a look back before the release of Scarlet and Violet, some positive memories came flooding back to me.

And with more critical eye, I can tribute the moments I did really enjoy all those years ago. Because when you take a moment to ignore the overpriced DLC, as a stand alone game, it's actually quite enjoyable. Let's take look into one of Game Freak's ultimate mixed bags.

The game starts off with you and your best friend Hop obtaining your Galarian Starters from the Champion himself, Leon. Who decides to endorse your Gym Challenge, hoping to meet worthy opponents in the future. The Gym Leader challenge has returned, now paired with a "Sporting Event" theme. With Galar's design heavily based off of Great Britain, it makes sense to throw the country's love for sports in the mix.

And while not every Gym Battle is a winner, hearing that roar from the stadium took me back to the days I watched Ash Ketchum compete in the Pokemon League. The closest games to create that effect were the Pokemon Stadium games and it's great to play a core-series game that creates the same effect.

And to add to the flavor, trainers can now Dynamax their Pokemon and transform them into giants. Increasing their HP drastically and giving them the ability to use powerful new Max Moves to crush opponents into dust. Some Pokemon even have the ability to change their form and Gigantamax, allowing them to use powerful signature Max Moves and show off a Kaiju inspired appearance.

The only thing standing in the way of my enjoyment is the story. Which isn't as bad and yet somehow just as bad as I remember in multiple portions of the game. Problem number one, Hop, the Master of None.

While not as pathetic as the X and Y rivals, Hop doesn't build a decent Pokemon team until the post game. And is entire character can be summed up as unfocused. He's really positive like Hau but also pretty bland like most of the Gender-Swap Rivals. And at the end of the post game when he decides to become a Professor, I'm simply confused. Enter the Pokemon Hall of Shame on your right.

Whenever the story annoyed me, I went to to explore the wild area. A large world designed for those who love to capture Pokemon. At the surface it's really fun to explore. You get to find rare items, high leveled monsters, gorgeous lakes to surf on...it's everything you would want out of long Pokemon level. Hiking through this open world is incredibly relaxing, it's a grand mechanic that several Switch games are aiming for these days. It doesn't feel like you're exploring Galar anymore, it feels like you're exploring the world of Pokemon itself.

Their's one fatal problem with this set up, some Pokemon are exclusive to the wild area. Making Pokedex completion an eyesore since some Pokemon will only appear once per week...half of the time. I'm not joking when I say it took me two real life weeks to build my original ultimate Pokemon team, because certain members couldn't be found in the wild area yet.

It's not that there are no decent Pokemon to capture in the main game routes, but it's really annoying that the game will only allow certain Pokemon of the week to appear. It's bad enough that Gamefreak had to remove several Pokemon and moves in order to make room for this new content. But it's outright scummy to make some of those rejected Pokemon obtainable through overpriced DLC.

And as for the adventure itself, it's still enjoyable. Rising from the ranks of the Gym Challenge tournament aiming to dethrone Leon. But the game gets unbelievably easy after the fifth gym. Version exclusives mean nothing to me, Rock Types and Ice Types are not difficult to defeat.

The villains of this game are a huge let down as well. With Chairman Rose being a weak twist villain with a pathetic Steel-Type Team to match. His plan is to use the Legendary Pokemon as an energy source, he just needed a master trainer to control it. And while Leon did say he would comply and battle Eternatus after the tournament, the Chairman proceeds without him, due to his inability to wait one day.

And then theirs Sordward and Shielbert...who are perhaps the most annoying villains in the entire Pokémon franchise. They have all the most annoying quirks. Ex Machina fleeing powers, an army of evil NPCs, boring Pokemon teams. And if you want the new staple legendary Pokemon on your team, you have to complete a post game challenge where Sonia mentions her new assistant, who has no name.

So in conclusion, the game gets annoying half way through. It reminds a lot of Skylanders Trap Team. A game with really fun new gameplay mechanics, a predictable story, overpriced extra content, and a bunch fun boss battles mixed in with pathetic ones.

Had a whole bunch of fun with this title playing alongside my son who was playing the opposite title at the same time. I hear all the complaints, but hey, as someone who's not in for competitive play, I just want to collect fun-looking monsters and win, it was perfectly fine. Could the graphics be better? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Historia 5
Banda sonora bastante cumplidora.

It's different from the past games, and that's what gets it a lot of bad reviews. It's very easy, it's not balanced for competitive play, the story is mediocre, there's not a ton of available pokemon (looking at Skitty), the postgame is short, and it's easy to complete the entire game in two weeks. I love all of these things (except the lack of Skitty). This game was designed for children to play and I appreciate that – the first game I ever played was Pokemon White and I still haven't beaten it. Tiny Me got frustrated just trying to find my way to the next gym.
Sword/Shield fixes everything I hated about the previous Pokemon games, and that's a long list:
Curry is my favorite feature. Cooking makes it possible to heal your pokemon without using items or a pokemon center, and gives XP. Curry also makes it easy to make your pokemon love you, so friendship evolutions are a LOT easier. Friendship and happiness are combined in this game, so there's no "affection isn't the same as friendship" bullcrap like Sun/Moon. Getting Eeveelutions is a simple process.
HMs are gone from this world, finally. Flying to a location is just going to the map and clicking where you want to go, and a flying taxi takes you there. A godsend.
Most pokemon encounters are in the overworld, and caves are no longer the most annoying thing ever! Repels aren't a necessary item anymore.
The X menu tells you where your next objective is and how to get there, so you can't get lost or forget where you were supposed to go.
Leveling is very easy and the EXP is automatically distributed throughout your party. Playing with your pokemon is a lot more fun and open, with the ability to throw balls for your Yamper and Legendary; you just can't pet them (this also gives XP which is nice). Dynamax is a fun thing that helps make the game super easy, and raid dens give XP Candies and sometimes Rare Candies, which makes leveling even easier. With XP Candies, you don't have to grind wild pokemon all the time.
Boxes are accessible from the X Menu wherever you are, and they're much easier to use.
There are both regular TMs and breakable TRs that are free and purchasable.
Moves can be deleted and relearned whenever you visit a Pokemon Center.
Berries are easily acquired but not easily farmable like the Poké Pelago of Sun/Moon.
It's also fun to customize your character with clothes! Since money is so plentiful, you can pretty much buy everything eventually :D
This is my personal favorite Pokemon game because it applies to my style of gameplay: "Who wants things to be hard?" I'd recommend SWSH to anyone who disliked previous Pokemon games for being too difficult, people who like messing around after beating the game, and for anyone who wants to play a chill game where nothing threatens you :3

It also is the exact same as other pokemon games. I wish they would change the gameplay a little bit, make it open world or make fun puzzles or dungeons. Their really isn't anything different in this game then from the last... Also the animations are lazy, and they removed some pokemon from the national dex... So your favorite pokemon might not be there. Honestly, the only reason I would buy it is if I didn't already have a traditional pokemon game. 3/10.

It's a shame for the first entry on switch to be this lazy. The game looks like a wii game in 2019.

plain and simple, if that statement does not appeal to you, please god dont buy this game. luckily it does appeal to me, and i mustered quite a bit of fun out of this. not enough to get the dlc tho. Btw dexit is fine, it was inevitable. their excuse kinda sucked, as this game doesnt look too good, but with PLA and Sc/Vi it looks like the smaller scope is

Enjoyable game, wild area is fun and the locations look nice and varied. I do find the story gets a but rushed and nonsensical however its pokemon so not exactly playing it for the story.

The worst entry in the Pokemon series. The scenario does not exist, the characters are all mediocre. The roads are just straight lines without any level-design. The game is immeasurably ugly, though being pretty wouldn't change much at this point. Galar is the most insipid region in the series.

A rushed, lazy, boring mess. There is almost no reason to buy this game, there is nothing fun about it. I love Pokemon but this game just makes me sad.

First Pokemon game I've played since Gold on GBC. Probably a timid entry regarding the changes they wanted to introduce in this console generation, specially after playing Legends Arceus. The main story felt short and the post game was ackward story wise. Still a enjoyable Pokemon journey.

This game is probably the best Pokémon game to come in a long time. So many unique pokémon and fun fights will make you forget about the real world.

Expand

Another nice addition to the Pokémon game series. Sure, It's kinda short, and the story is godawful, but I liked most of the new Pokémon designs, the gym battles were super exciting, and the wild areas were decent. Overall, it was better than I expected and I liked exploring Galar with my favourite Galarian Pokémon.

An absolutely pathetic game to add to a franchise with so much potential. Extremely disappointing.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are very lazy, uninteresting games. Battle timers for online battling are still a major issue, and the lack of many pokemon from previous games is disappointing. DLC feels like it made up for what should have been in the games, to begin with. They are still pokemon games, however, and there is some fun to be had, it's nice to have a legitimate online ladder and competitions from time to time. New pokemon designs are a very mixed bag, generally on the worse side. Dynamax is a generally unpleasant gimmick. The game is laughably easy. The two strong points in the game are the wild area, which definitely could be improved, and the fantastic soundtrack, as is the case in most pokemon games. Expand

Sword & Shield have a lot to love for old and new fans, and they're pure quality from top to bottom. [Issue #44 – January/February 2020, p. 72]

I enjoyed my time with Pokemon Sword and Shield, but I ended feeling conflicted. I appreciate many of the changes and felt that it generally respected my time, but I almost felt like a passive participant. The more complex gym challenges had a meatier role, but the narrative shouldn’t have been shoved to the side. Overall, I would recommend it to players who want to have a Pokemon experience, but this one won’t stick with me the way the older ones have.

Pokemon Sword/Shield is uncharacteristically user-friendly: now there’s no need to backtrack half across the world to heal your entire team of pokemon or to get to a particular city, for example. [Issue#242, p.66]
