No abilities, no items, broken stats, bugged battles, frame drops on Viridian forest
Fake mainline game, it’s a phone game legalized for a gaming console.
The battle system confuse the new peoples, they will be more confused when the real next mainline games will come out. It’s better to play Pokémon 3ds games, 3ds games are better also for the kids who start playing for the first time

If you care about the future of gaming, the future of Nintendo or even the future of Pokemon, then stay the **** away from this cash grab.

P.S. I will never accept such a **** argument as "this game is made for the casual crowd".. I mean how much more casual can a Pokemon game get? I was 7 years old when I beat Pokemon Blue (which might actually be the most difficult out of all)... 7 YEARS OLD! And you're telling me that it needs to get more casual? Everytime I play a Pokemon game, I catch whatever Pokemon I want and faceroll everything until the elite 4 which gets A BIT challenging. So screw this game and everyone who thought that this was a good idea.. Also screw the Pokeball controller and it's Mew exclusivity. This game is a fraud

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty much the same typical pokemon game you ever expect from Game Freak. Nothing screams challenging single player content. For a JRPG it's pretty low in standards. I'm just going to cut to the chase and give you what exactly what you want.

Is there single player post game content and is there any good replay value?

Yes there is post game content such as the master trainer battles, and SPOILERS! You get to fight trainer Blue, Red, and Green. As for replay value, no. Most modernize pokemon games from the 3DS era onto the Switch STILL weak in the replay value department.

There! That's pretty much what there is to it. If you want to buy the game because it's "Pokemon" then by all means go ahead, but if you pretty much play every single game in the generation. Expecting more of a hardcore single player challenge, more post game content, higher replay value for single player content. I'm terribly sorry but you're sadly mistaken if you think you'll be getting those.

Funny enough, the story is just as bland as X and Y. Despite it being a remake and all. Then again, Red, Blue, Yellow, Fire Red, and Leaf Green always had terrible stories. Don't expect that to change.

Overall, it's just another cheap cash grab, lack of replay value and most of all. Another babies' first JRPG. It's not worth playing and I suggest everyone to turn away from it and hold off until gen 8 comes around. Though let's be real honest. Gen 8 will be **** too so long as Junichi Masuda, Shigeru Ohmori is at the helm of directing these games. Nothing will ever change.

A disaster of a game. GameFreak's laziness masquerades as "a game aimed at beginners": these games are lacking elements that would have made the experience more broadly enjoyable without actually hurting the beginners (no Sevii Isles? Common excuse? The lower budget then. Which makes no sense for a $60 game. This should have cost $25, and instead what we got is a full priced release that better not be a preview of what's to come in the next year.
To top it all off, this is using a basically upscaled port of the engine used on the 3DS, as this does not offer graphics worthy of a home console game (even for a Pokémon game, this could have a much more interesting, detailed overworld), and yet it STILL manages to have its framerate dip at times.

Truly, a disaster that better not set a precedent for the upcoming titles, sold at more than twice the price it's actually worth. Keep that in mind when reading reviews from the press, who didn't have to pay for this title.

If you're an adult, you will likely find this game to be a bad purchase for the price point. It's an extremely watered down experience; many features such as abilities, held items, weather and battling wild Pokemon have been removed, whereas battle animations (or complete lack-thereof) haven't been touched. This all leaves battles boring both visually and mechanically. There is no challenge to be had, and the game also suffers from lag in some areas because it's badly optimised.

Overall I played around 20 hours before loosing interest. I don't feel it's worth the price point at all, and I would not recommend purchasing it when there are far better games available on the Switch.

    1. The game is way too easy. It's impossible to lose a battle. You gain so much experience, that you will always be over-leveled relative to your opponent but also have a team of 6. In the original, going through Mt. Moon was a grind and you either had to fade out or go back to the Pokémon Center. In this game, you just blaze through it with your overpowered and over-leveled starter.

    2. Exp. Share should not be mandatory, and it is broken. The experience each Pokémon gains does not change according to relative level differences. This means that the forsaken Magikarp you buy before Mt. Moon will be hopelessly under-leveled, as it belongs to the slow experience group. Moreover, any Pokémon you catch will usually be under-leveled relative to your starter. The only way to train these Pokémon on their own is to remove all other Pokémon from the party and go around catching useless Pokémon in combos.

    3. There are no wild battles. I honestly cannot understand why they thought this was a good idea. I'd welcome novel ways to capture Pokémon. I mean, you could try befriend them and they would willingly want to join you - a bit like what happens with the starter. The new catching mechanics on their own are stale and boring. Moreover, the fact you don't have to battle wild Pokémon means there is no risk-reward to catching Pokémon in places like the Victory Road, Mt. Moon or the Rock Tunnel.

    4. Very poor frame rate performance in many locations (e.g. Viridian Forest) and poor overworld animations.

    5. Lack of content. If the game is focusing more on catching wild Pokémon, it makes no sense to remove all the next generations.

Very disappointing. I think this game is going to simply gather dust.

Now if that's what it actually was then maybe it would be fine, I would understand if they were limited by hardware or something but they're not. Nintendo has already shown what the switch is really capable of and astounded us with things like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. In comparison this is utterly pathetic. Especially as one of their mainstay franchises.
It just feels so barebones. So many basic features have been stripped away. Of all the features removed the absence of wild battles is the most noticeable. Sure they could be annoying but that annoyance mostly came from the fact that these encounters were randomised. They found the perfect remedy for that by having pokemon appear in the overworld, the player can now decide what pokemon to encounter when they choose. But why then remove the battle element? Having to use this silly catching mechanic for the entirety of the game is just not fun and the joycon controls for it are awful. At least those battles gave some kind of variety to gameplay. And it should be noted that by removing wild battles you're not just stripping away one the most fundamental elements of every mainline pokemon games gameplay but from the story too. The whole reason you're given your starter pokemon in the first place is to protect you from all the other pokemon in the world. In the original red and blue Professor Oak yanks you out the grass and tells you it's not safe out there. Here in let's go the pokemon in the overworld don't even bother chasing you, they just stand around waiting to be caught. The only challenging aspect of wild encounters now is making sure you've brought along enough pokeballs. Theres very little challenge in the game overall. The incredibly broken candy system and the exp share which is stuck on at all times make the trainers who are already pushovers no obstacle at all. Most pokemon games are fairly easy but at least there was online play to supplement that but here online features are incredibly limited, there's no GTS, Wonder Trade, or Battle Spot and you can only battle or trade with friends locally. With no challenge in the main game, very little post game content and limited online features its just a dull experience overall. The bland visuals don't help either. The environments feel sterile. I was initially somewhat excited to see a revisit to kanto, but only because I was interested to see how it would be reimagined with the capabilities of the switch. There is no re-imagining though, instead we just get the same maps and layouts, outdated grid system included, lazily rendered in 3D. They're reusing the models and animations for pokemon that they made 5 years ago for x and y and i've noticed some reuse of animations from sun and moon for npcs too. And fair enough, we're approaching nearly 1000 pokemon now, it's not worth the time to redo those every game, but surely then that should also afford you time to actually put care into rest of the games visuals. And the soundtrack that I've seen a lot of praise for, in the end just turned out to be generic midi orchestrated versions of the originals that lack any real personality of their own.
And all of this is excused because its meant for children and to bring new people into the franchise. So did children not buy any of the previous games? Were those games not designed with them in mind? Did the kids back in the day who's nostalgia Gamefreak are now banking on drop out of the franchise back then? No. A lot of the 'accessibility issues' this game tries to solve were never really problems in the first place. A full understanding of the complexities of breeding, training and battling required for competitive play online were never necessary to make it through the main story. And you never had to touch online if you didn't want to. This already simple game series didn't need diluting further to make it more accessible. And with Pokemon currently being the highest earning media franchise, i don't evenk think accessibility is even an issue for them anymore anyway.
Really not optimistic about the 2019 games if this is all gamefreak has to show for the switch.

Lets move on to the battles. Gamefreak managed to make the game even easier then sun and moon. You don't have to battle wild pokemon anymore. It takes another bite out of the strategy these games used to have. Now you don't have to worry about your pokemon's moves PP. The fun part about pokemon games was the catching mechanic. Taking down the HP of each pokemon, inflicting status effects all to make the catching proces more easy. Its completely gone in this game. Now you just keep throwing stuff at pokemons. Its like they thought "hey, lets change pokemon red in a huge safari zone".

I'm so frustrated with this game. This was supposed to be the first big step for pokemon to a new console generation and they blew it. Luckily we still got smash this year, because Nintendo really dropped the ball this year.

I played the thing for like a 2 weeks, put it down cause i got bored and never picked it up again. I can't decide whether to throw it away or burn it because i don't want anyone playing it if i can help it. I work at walmart and the dang thing sits untouched in the glass case i swear let's go pikachu hasn't been touched in 9 months. Let's go eevee was only worth it because of the frickin eevee. I had to start making my own rules for the game just so i wouldn't get bored. I am so glad that sword and shield came out and have battles in them as far as i can tell because we can hopefully forget about this crap piece of game and let it die in the dust. Great for kids yeah but extremely infurating to me. I don't even play competitive. If it had battles i would have no complaints but no frickin no it left me feeling hollow and like all the pokemon i caught weren't even worth it. Another thing is the fricking forced catching the game makes you do, i literally caught a bellsprout and released it after i made it into brock's gym just because screw that piece of crap. The rule's are great as an idea but horrid in exicution and i dare you to tell me it was "fun" because i will debate you till morning come and tell you it wasn't. This game is bad. Now who is it good for? Families. There are good ideas in it and such but it is just a family game. The company may say it's a core game but i will never count it as such nor do i even want to remember it's existance. I got it as a christmas present because i didn't wanna play it and guess what? I was right. about it all. unequivically right. Now if you're a parent that wants to bond with your child sure go play it but the co-op is terrible and it's completely simplified and base-line. They ripped out every bit of challenge from it and i basically beat the game with my eevee while the other pokemon road on its coat-tails, which i got rid of when i went to face the champion because i never needed them. I hope sword and shield are good because literally nothing else could have been worse than this, even games that are literally made to be a joke are better than this joke of a game. There are some aspects of the game that I like. For example, I believe that you are able to choose which Pokemon you want to catch instead of random encounters is nice and I preferably quite like it. I also think that because of the new combo feature and the Shiny Charm, it makes catching shiny Pokemon more enjoyable and easier rather than spending hours on end trying to find that one shiny Pokemon you were looking for. There are many features that are unpleasant and disappointing about this game as well. I found this game to be quite fun when I was playing it. I liked battling all the gyms and battling the Elite Four again, but after that I quickly lost interest in the game. I myself am not a shiny hunter so that takes the aspect of "chaining" as I call it and filling up the PokeDex out of the question. The "Master Trainers" don't provide a interesting thing to do after the game, and Team Rocket does a lousy job of trying to battle your trainer again after the game. Overall, I am disappointed in the post game adventure unlike Sun, Omega Ruby, and X. I also am not a fan of the catching mechanism that Game-freak used in this game. I find myself using too many Pokeballs and infuriating myself on how Pokemon somehow instantaneously flee from battles breaking my chains. I am used to spending 1-3 Pokeballs in the other core games rather than 7-9 Pokeballs in this game. I also dislike how there are only 151 core Pokemon in this game (excluding the legendary, special Pokemon, and the Alolan Pokemon). This makes for the game to be somewhat boring and tiring going through. I honestly think there is a lack of story line here both in game and post game. The way that Game-freak merged the game with Pokemon Go was disappointing and unpleasant for the core gamers. Overall, I think you should give this game a try. It's not only my opinion that shapes your mind to whether you want to buy the game or not. I think it should not be called a core series game and more of a sub-series game. Disappointing overall. sigh...I am just so upset and worried at this point after playing Let's Go. It has so little content and many of the wonderful things that made the game progressively better were suddenly removed (held items, abilities, a ton of moves, BREEDING?!?!, fishing, day/night, wild battles, exp share off/on option, a developed story...) it is just so bare...SO bare that you can play and feel like you're the loneliest person on the planet. I want to attack and fight with my pokemon, not throw balls all day....but that is just me. I worry for the future...I hope they don't use these simplifications for the next game to be released because that will be crushing.
On a positive note...this game having an IV checker is fantastic and I like being able to easily tell how good or bad my catch is...that is about the only addition I was thrilled with though.
Please...PLEASE, Nintendo...also realize we are grown-ups now for the most part...intrigue us with something a bit darker if possible next time, or just keep the strategy alive so we are stimulated....

The fact that you can longer battle wild pokemons automatically makes this a different game. I like how every Pokemon in the group gets exp though. Nice graphic. Expected a bit more of the game. Maybe a bit more story and a bit more little side challenges. Not asking for a lot. If I had got the game for $10, I would have gave it a 8. At premium price, this game is garbage.

Now if you're fine with Gamefreak/Nintendo saying "All the fans need to see is that it has Pokemon in the title" then by all means I guess this game is for you. If you're fine with them putting in less and less effort in every subsequent iteration of your favorite franchise then by all means throw your hard earned cash at them and see this the video games sink into mobile/casual territory. The Director himself said in an interview that "People/Kids are used to mobile games and watching games on youtube", so by his defintion, you the consumer have the attention span of an ant to even be able to enjoy fully fleshed out video games and would probably just enjoy watching beautiful scenery than actually playing the games. But enough about that.

See the problem with the games is, its a switch game, not only that but its pokemons debut game for the console itself. Its priced at 60$ which is 20$ more than the previous games and it has less content. This is a fact. Stripping the other pokemons itself is already a huge chunk of the content out of the games. FR/LG had sevii islands in the post-game, HG/SS had the battle frontier, OR/AS had soaring, mirage islands, battle-resort, Delta episode then LGPE has well.. 1 on 1 with a bunch of trainers just re-scattered around kanto. I get it they want to lure in the Go community and the people that left the games a long time ago but at the cost of alienating your LOYAL fanbase. That a bit of a kick in the nuts. Why couldn't they find a middle ground to make the games appealing to both and then again by the way they designed this game it shouldn't even be appealing to the casual-fanbase, in truth its insulting, basically them saying that the games in its current state, a childrens game btw is too much for other people to handle so they had to dumb it down even for grown adults to enjoy? ridiculous. but hey people will probably just eat this up because its pokemon and its pretty.

If you're a long time fan of the series and no matter how much this game looks appealing to you, just think about what this game means for the future of the series. Speak out, vote with your wallet. Maybe you won't feel the effects yet by the already announced gen 8 title, but at somepoint gamefreak is going to realize even without putting any effort into these games that they will sell, I assure you the video games will become shells of its former self. Im sure alot already feels this way with the 3DS games.

I can't believe that I paid $60 for this game and got the Pokeball controller. One of the biggest turn offs to this game for me was the inability to use the Switch Pro controller. Another thing that they did was remove the Safari Zone, and you can tell that this seems to have been done late in game development because they didn't replace the dialog for a lot of NPCs in Fuchsia City. I played all of the GameBoy (Original/Color/Advance) games and I found this title to not live up to expectations. Another somewhat annoying thing is that you can't skip the credits when you beat the Elite Four, so grinding them to reach level 100 isn't going to be any fun. If this was a $30 title with the previously listed issues, I would probably rate this game 7/10 mostly for nostalgia's sake. The kicker is that I didn't spend $100, I spent $160 because I bought both versions of the game. I don't see myself buying a pokemon title again. In addition to the many things (literal dozens) they've removed from the series since 2009/2010, they further removed another half dozen features including some of which had been there for the entire series duration meaning no one who likes the series as is wanted them removed because if you like a game you don't want the basics changed arbitrarily, you want them built upon.

I wasn't against a return to Kanto in the slightest when leaks started happening that made it appear to be the case. But it should have been a BotW or Odyssey outing. A return to the series roots to build up with all of the content that had been present since the originals and more new content.

Instead we get a game worse than a nearly 15 year old remake that wasn't that great itself objectively speaking.

Graphic style is fine, following Pokémon is a nice return but this is a game and the game play is SEVERELY lacking. Especially for a the price. This is what should have been an easy mode in a full content game sold separately for people who don't know better or can't help themselves.

I love Pokémon. Have played the series for about 65 THOUSAND hours over the last 20 years and this is not at all what I ever wanted Pokémon to be. The last few weren't impressive but to say they were outright bad would have been a lie. Just barely a lie in the case of the most recent brand new games, but a lie nonetheless when considering the game play alone. The same is not true here.

To be a little more specific:
-Level design which makes children characters look like they're either 7 foot tall and 8 foot around or building look like they're 5 and a half feet tall and 6 and a half feet wide as opposed to being much more reasonably sized comparitively in the actual gameboy games they're based on.
    -Terrible mobile game controls.
    -Lack of wild battles.
-No random encounters making the grass utterly pointless to have included
-Everything appearing in the overworld and with little animations build up and cause extreme graphic lag the 3DS games already only hit 30 at best and now you get about 15.
-Stat system is ridiculously OP even beyond what the originals were.
-Messes up the previous game's storyline entirely by introducing these into the same story without any explanation as to what's happened to change things.
-Requirements on gyms. Some of which don't just teach you the game like some erroneously argue since it requires you to have very specific stuff even when those things are NOT the only way you could do it. They're teaching you only part of the game which I'm sure will lead to confusion on the part of any new players they might be targeting with this. To be clear, I know this isn't needed at all. Tens of millions of people have figured all of this out just fine on their own even as very young children - there are world championships for children if they can understand the metagame they can play casually without issue - but even accepting that as the intent, it's been done wrong. And done worse than the previous remakes which had the Teachy TV item for this and should have just been kept in and updated but is one of the dozens of things that these games have continued to leave out instead.
-One of the Pokémon can only be obtained from physical DLC - a controller which has limited functionality than the ones it replaces and doesn't work with any other game.
-You cannot access 80% of the only characters who matter AT ALL.

And I could go on but I think I've gone on long enough.

If you like what the series is you should not buy this. Game Freak's track record is to let each content lesser game define what the next ones will be because they have admitted to wanting yearly games at the cost of quality. You will get something worse than this if you let them know you will buy it no matter what.

If you think you might want to transition to the other games from this? You should not buy this. The originals are available on 3DS and will actually wean you in where this is the furthest thing from the modern main series they've created to date.

Like Go? You shouldn't buy it. I may not like it but you already have access to a superior and much more cost worthy version of this game.

Are you a child or thinking about buying it for children? Do not buy this. Go buy the recent 3DS games. While they're certainly not the best of the series, you/they will find this game entirely condescending with it's baby talk and probably dislike anyone involved in buying it for them. You have a much more cost effective way to appease them and not treat yourself/them like mental invalids in the 3DS games.

Are you nostalgic for Gen 1? Do not buy this game. It has a host of many things you do not want that were not in the originals. If you want straight Kanto HD this is not the game for you. Once again, the 3DS has what you're looking for on it's Virtual Console at a much better price point.

Cara, isso me enfurece.

    Enfim, é isto.

What's terrible about it? Well there's so much that it's really hard to say for certain, but I have to be honest, its worst, and most heinous crime is being boring. Fantastically amazingly boring. Beyond that, the game has removed features that have been a series staple for 16 years, items, abilities, and about 656 monsters, most of which I really like. What did we get in its place? Watered down, milquetoast Pokemon Yellow. Yellow was 20 years ago and by virtue of its limitations still quite charming. This is anything but. Every two out of three balls will miss, guaranteed, wasting time, wasting money. The few quality of life features the games do have are overshadowed by the game's major problems. Additionally if you are familiar with Pokemon go, the rules for a monster fleeing are different, and can happen anytime instead of just after a failed catch.

But why is it important to give this game a bad reputation? Because this laziness, this pandering to the lowest common denominator could become the way the rest of the series is. Imagine Pokemon 9 with even less new monsters than XY or Sun and Moon, with more restrictive movement than Final Fantasy XII. That's what this game could portend. However, maybe Morimoto will be the director from now on. Fire Musada and promote Morimoto

But then it gets insanely old with no interesting storylines to keep us interested, and grinding for anything like a shiny is so monotonous, at least I used to have to go to the Pokemon canter to refresh PP. Battling and trying to catch a rare Pokemon used to pay off, now what's the point of training up? I can use every Pokemon I have at any time during the game, are there going to be events or expanded multiplayer? With the absence of held items, random battles, and everything else that made the main series different from every other knockoff, I feel like I'm playing a knockoff. If I wanted to just play anything with the Pokemon name on it, I'll pick up Pokemon Pinball again, even that has depth.

Really I'm just disappointed, this feels like a game that could have come out on my iPhone 5 years ago. Anyone who's played one of those online Pokemon MMO's knows the potential of this game. We could have seen real players walking around in game and spark up a battle in Viridian Forrest, or at least battle something. Why would you advertise or even hint at such potential and then deliver such a stripped down version, are they taking tips from Bethesda? lol. I really wish this game was fun. They've had me hooked since I was 10 and I want to play a great (or even good) Pokemon game, but this isn't it. Just download one of the knockoff Pokemon games on your app store, any of those will deliver about as much content.

I will say the music and graphics, etc. have improved, but who gave a hoothoot about that when playing Pokemon? Priorities are reversed, hopefully some of this feedback gets to the developers and they make a game for us again. This game is for children or people who have never played a Pokemon game or video game at all. If it was billed/marketed this way, there would be only a fraction of these poor reviews.

-Tons of cut corners for overworld character animations (some walk like robots in only 90 degrees, some just do a static jump to convey an action like hand chopping, some just have an emote quote bubble above their heads instead of giving them facial animations).
-Motion controls are forced despite portable mode not having it.
-You still can't skip cutscenes, only the very few CGI movies in the game
-Copy-pasted the story from Yellow but edited some parts to make it worse, like your "Friendly Rival".
-Instead of reimagining the region, they copied it 1:1 and just gave it a graphical paint job
-low effort "Master Trainers" being the only post game and is the most tedious grind in the entire franchise
-Legendaries feel like checklists instead of explorative hunts because they didn't change ANYTHING
-Instead of giving Mew its own in-game quest, they force you to buy a $50 useless peripheral

The only TWO postives about the game are them changing random encounters to physical encounters (which they should've done a long time ago) and following/riding pokemon. Both could have been done better though. The former has pokemon popping out of thin air so it feels unnatural and the latter just feel like robots that follow behind you except for the occasional scripted event where it "finds" an item. Riding pokemon just feel like a sprite swap with increased speed. It feels nothing like riding a horse in BotW. And it's annoying how they disppear every time you go near an NPC or ledge.

These games are absolutely terrible and the fact that it's getting such positive reception makes me fear where the future of the franchise is headed. Whatever happened to standards?

As a HUGE Pokemon fan, I have blind faith in the franchise and literally went out and bought a switch specifically at the prospect of a new Pokemon game, but unfortunately I have never been more disappointed. While the game is beautiful, Nintendo really took a HUGE step back here in gameplay... taking away abilities and held items is probably the biggest mistake they could have made and completely removes any form of depth from the game. Outside of typing, Let's Go has no meta game WHATSOEVER, which resulted in the most dumbed down, bland experienceI have had in a game in years...

I get that the idea here is to onboard new comers from Pokemon go so that the company can make as much money as possible, but this game does a terrible job at it because it actually a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT game from what the legit core series is about.

Coming from a Pokemon fanatic, it breaks my heart that I can't recommend this title to anyone

Yes, they know what Nintendo said about the game not being exactly like the others and, yes, they know about the mechanics that Nintendo said would not be in the game. With that said, that does not invalidate their entire review because, like everyone else, they had their own experience with the game and just want to share their thoughts. So, don't be so quick to down-vote. This is what reviews are for, to show an overall reception of a piece of media. So take in all of these reviews and form your own opinion about the game.

    ANYWAY,
I beat Pokemon Emerald in 3 days when I was 5 years old. That being said, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu (and Eevee. They're the same game. Don't be a sucker and buy both) are dumbed down to the bear minimum.
    - Always on exp share (not a big issue though)
    - Pokemon GO wild battles
    - constant hand holding
    - friendly rival (because children are sensitive and words hurt I guess)
    - No abilities
    - No held items
    - Only first 151 Pokemon (plus Meltan and Melmetal)
    - No working game corner (because I guess that counts as gambling and we must shield the children)
It's almost as if Game Freak assumes that kids these days are getting dumber every year. The games were already easy and, now, they're just lifeless.

I don't have a problem with going back to Kanto because I really like Kanto. The issue lies in that there are no new places to go. In fact, places like the Sevii Islands have been taken out. Personally, I would have really like to visit Johto afterwards but I guess that was too much to ask for.

I also don't have a problem with wild pokemon appearing outside of battle rather than being randomly selected when running through tall grass. The issue with this, though, is that there are so many of them and, a lot of times, you will have your path blocked by randomly wandering wild pokemon whom you can't touch because then you'll be forced to play carnival ring toss with them.

The story is fairly the same as pokemon yellow with little to no change. You start out as a trainer in pallet town and end after beating the pokemon league. Simple. There is also no post game unless you think that "Master Trainers" actually qualifies for being post-game content. I don't see why Nintendo made a big fuss over master trainers. They're just 1v1 battles of the same pokemon and you get a title of that specific pokemon when you beat them but, those titles don't make sense in any context if you use more than one species of pokemon.

You can also try to complete the pokedex but that only works if you get mew who is locked behind a paywall. That's right! You have to buy the pokeball plus to acquire mew which is another $50 ($40 dollars if you buy the bundle pack) because, I guess, EA must've taken Nintendo aside and told them that consumers love getting screwed over at every turn.

Also, half the animations were quite literally ripped from SM/USUM so expect a lot of things to look familiar. ALSO, the graphics look sub-par. The switch is definitely capable of more than just SM/USUM graphics without the black outlines. So, that was unimpressive.

Character customization is pretty shallow despite being much better in previous titles on an inferior console. Once you pick your character appearance, you are not able to change anything about it from then on (hair style, color, eye color, etc.) You can still customize your outfit but, that has been dumbed down to just a few sets (some of which are version exclusive) and any attempt to mix and match between the sets never looks right.

The thing that I think this game does right is the music. The music is always top notch, largely because everything else is still conveyed through text. Taking the soundtrack up to orchestral level is always nice though.

Overall, this game is just... okay. It plays fine. It looks fine. However, once you beat it, there is no reason to ever come back. The online sucks and, now you need to buy a Nintendo Switch Online Subscription to even do something simple like that.

(TL;DR) Not worth $60. Designed to appeal to the very small brain stunted children. This game is Baddy Bad.

However, there is a role for this game as an entry point for new players. It looks a lot prettier than the older games and they decided to tone down the difficulty to a ridiculously easy level. I would definitely recommend this game for new players to acquaint themselves with the Kanto region and the original 151 pokemon. For players who have even touched another game in the series, this game will get boring very fast.

Overall, this is a fairly uninspired Kanto reboot, and I hope that Pokemon doesn't continue moving in this direction.

This is not Pokemon, this is Pokemon Go. This is a game about buying and throwing pokeballs instead of battling pokemon. I don't know if the critics were afraid of giving a big franchise and much hyped game bad reviews or what, but this game does not deserve an 81 meta score.

It's incredible how Game Freak can dumb down such an incredible franchise to milk as many pennies from the casual audience. Sadly, the new graphics and music can't make up for the removed gameplay elements such as wild Pokémon battles (I guess they were too difficult for the casual market?).

The graphics are okay, marginally better than Gen 7 (though the capture sequences are virtually indistinguishable from GO), and seeing Pokémon roam around the overworld is pretty cool and something I hope carries over to later generations. No HMs is nice but USUM already fixed that. Thus ends my list of pros.

I don't understand all the meddling with the core formula. The story is that GF wanted to make the game more accessible for new players so they removed wild battles, abilities, held items, etc. But last I checked, young kids have spent the last 20 years being able to figure out the inner complexities of Pokémon, beginning with those of us who started with Gen 1 when we were 6 and 7, all the way up to the kids whose first Pokémon game was USUM. Not to mention every iteration of Pokémon has sold like hotcakes, so it's not like having abilities or whatever was frustrating new players to the point that they weren't buying the game.

The real reason that this game has been so stripped down, that the difficulty is such a joke, is because it was obviously a rush job and a cash grab. Wanna know why IVs, which are easily the most complex thing about Pokémon, made it into the game but not abilities? Because IV's are easy to code into a game, it's just RNG pumping out a series of numbers. Same with natures, which are even more frustrating than IVs (still in the game despite being universally hated). Unlike abilities, but putting abilities in requires effort, unique animations, effects, weather (also removed), etc. Same with hold items. Nobody ever complained about hold items, we've been able to figure those out since the first time we gave Totodile a berry in GS, but those got purged too. So don't buy the BS that GF was concerned with new players being confused - what really happened is that they didn't have enough time to cram everything in before the holiday deadline.

The GO mechanics are also supremely frustrating, mostly because the catch system is designed for GO (a F2P game) and not a game that people paid $60 for. Pokémon GO is designed for kids to spam Poke balls until they have to use Mommy's Visa to buy more. Getting a Nice/Great/Excellent has zero bearing on catch rates, which is now 100% RNG that the player has very little control over - all you can do you is press the berry button and hope that the Pokémon doesn't immediately run away. The result is a catch minigame that feels incredibly frustrating - anyone who has hurled 5+ ultra balls into a green circle only to have their 30+ chain broken because the target fled knows what I mean.

It's charming being back in Kanto, and seeing a big-ol Onix rumble around is cool. But this game is not worth $60, and with less features than the 3DS games it might not be worth $40 either. I understand why this game exists, but man is it a disappointment, and if GF doesn't really crush Gen 8 then my interest in Pokémon might finally collapse. Also they left Stealth Rock in the game but removed Rapid Spin and Defog. You have been warned.

The people settling for this are blind complacent fanboys who don't care about the quality of what they consume because they idolize what they like to dangerous levels and adopt ''my team must win and can do no wrong'' tribalist mentality(which ironically enough they're the same people who will try to paint you as ''afraid of change'' when it's the same exact kanto just with GO mechanics instead of series staples) or casual players uninterested in challenging and in depth experiences and just want to have a relaxing and fun time, which is perfectly fine but I feel like previous pokemon games do a perfect job of being a fun experience for everybody no matter what kind of player you are and there's no need to dumb down a series iconic for being newcomer friendly and easily accessible. this just feel like a poorly thought attempt of trying to get more casuals in the series out of the mistaken belief they have to sacrifice everything long time fans enjoyed to do so, and also a way to test how many times they can get away with selling kanto over and over again. While the games themselves do have some redeeming qualities and aren't worth a 1 (probably a 5 imo as they're not atrocious but just painfully dull and mediocre), I feel like pokemon should remain appealing to everybody and strike a balance between the various markets and that the core idea of needing to make everything easier and dumber that sparked this game into being in the first place is completely wrong and shoudn't be encouraged. I have been playing Pokémon for the last 20 years, and this game is a disgrace to the franchise. Now, don't get me wrong, this game does have entertainment value, but absolutely not worth the $110 for this game plus Mew. The months leading up to this game's release have been the most confusing times prior to anything I've ever seen revolving around a video game. The game's director,I have been playing Pokémon for the last 20 years, and this game is a disgrace to the franchise. Now, don't get me wrong, this game does have entertainment value, but absolutely not worth the $110 for this game plus Mew. The months leading up to this game's release have been the most confusing times prior to anything I've ever seen revolving around a video game. The game's director, Junichi Masuda, has made so many claims that all refute each other in terms of the target audience.

The games take place in Kanto, so there is no reason to market this game to younger children because they don't have nostalgia for Kanto.

Yet, he said this game was for kids that weren't able to play Pokemon GO due to not having cell phones.

Yet, still, the only way to obtain Meltan and Mew are through playing Pokemon GO and buying a $50 peripheral respectively. Not things his claimed target audience are going to be able to do.

He has stated that Let's Go is also intended to get younger players introduced into the more mainline games, yet on the same token, has said that younger players don't have the attention spans for complex video games like Pokemon anymore.

These conflicting claims aside, there have been a lot of decisions in respect to the gameplay that point to a low-effort release, but I'll highlight the positive aspects first.

    - First, the removal of wild battles. This was a controversial move, but not inherently bad. I understand this change, and why it was made for these titles specifically, as the players coming over from GO are going to be most familiar with these mechanics (but I thought the target audience was kids who didn't get to play GO? Hmm...)

    - Secondly, wild encounters are no longer random, but happen in the overworld. For me, this is a welcome change, as it helps the setting feel more alive.

    - Thirdly, pokemon can follow you and allow you to ride them. Something fans have been asking about since Black and White.

But here's where the games fall short:

    - The games only have the original 151, plus the new mythical, Meltan and Melmetal. All the other pokemon have been removed.

    - The difficulty of the game is nonexistent. Gyms have prerequisites, one of which is that you are stronger than the gym leader before you challenge it.

    - The new height system for pokemon means absolutely nothing. The models don't scale depending on how big the pokemon is, all are the same size regardless of what the game tells you.

    - Abilities, held items, several moves and eggs have been outright removed from the game.

    - EV's have been removed from the game, but the stats you CANNOT control, such as IV's, remains.

    - You play as a new character to the pokemon franchise, yet there is no customization, unlike the previous two generations as well as GO.

    - Animations and models have not improved in the 5 years since X and Y came out. Most pokemon still stand around as if they are just waiting to get hit.

    - Pokemon Amie (the petting and nurturing mini-game from the past two generations) does not exist for any pokemon besides your partner pokemon.

While these games are intensely flawed, overall, yes, this game has entertainment value best suited for small children. I would rate this game much higher than a 0 if it were already clear that this is a game best suited for children, but the Kanto pandering of these games has muddied up who this game is really meant for. If you are a grown man reading this review, who is not satisfied with the qualities this game possesses, please, do not buy it. This game is perfectly suited for a child who would otherwise need help during the course of a normal pokemon game. If you are willing to spend $60 on a game for a child's birthday, this is not a bad way to go, but do not feel obligated to buy strictly because you are a pokemon fan. You are missing very little.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well rather than just saying "it's bad," let's take a look at the product as a whole.
    Graphical Quality
The game has relatively basic graphics. Not abhorrent, but nothing special either. Notable model clipping and models that are somewhat bland doesn't make a huge impact on this game's graphics, although it doesn't really compare to less profitable JRPGs on the same system. When playing, I noticed that there was also some minor text errors. Overall, 4/10. It's not great but not vile either.
    The Gameplay
The catching of Pokemon mimics the rather poor quality experience I had when playing Pokemon Go, waiting for a circle and throwing a ball. While this seems done to incentivize catching over battling, it doesn't make for a terribly engaging experience and becomes repetitive and boring much faster than even a mediocre health absorbing enemy in a typical JRPG. Online components seem strangely weaker than other Pokemon games or even other games in general on the system, which is odd for a game that utilizes a paid subscription to use the online in the first place. The battles are extremely easy, which isn't a huge negative for the intended audience, but the unfilled movesets, small teams, and weak enemy AI makes one wish for an autobattle function, as there is zero brainpower required to defeat most trainers. The postgame content, something I'd not expect a child to bother with, is insultingly poor, solely consisting of mindlessly grinding out every Pokemon (not just the full evolutions) for a mirror match with an NPC. Overall 1/10 if you're over the target age, 4/10 if under it.
    The Music
Nothing terribly special. I prefer many of the pieces from Firered and Leafgreen more, but it's passable. Some pieces aren't great but overall 5/10, mediated from the solid 7/10 themes and terrible 2/10 ones.

Overall, the game is of poor quality. I would not recommend this game for purchase. I cannot return my copy, but I sincerely hope you do not make the same mistake. For children, I would suggest just buying them a nice Lego bucket instead. It would be a better use of the money.
As a rating, the game is really a 4/10, but as this is a user review I am rating it at 0 to ensure that an impact is made clear to any reading this. Immense buyer's remorse on my part factors into this.

cheap nostalgia grab: misses all pokemon post gen 1, items, abilities, graphics actually utilizing the switch's potential, and you can't 100% the game unless you shell out money to get mew which is actuall revolting. wait for the 2019 game instead, hopefully it's too late for this trashheap having any negative influence on it.

This is the game you get when your fanbase doesn't like change. When people complained that Black White had too many new Pokemon, they stopped introducing as many new pokemon. When kids found the games too difficult, they made them so easy that they are basically interactive powerpoint presentations. An unnecessary and absurdly silly game. It shows the mockery of Game Freak and Nintendo to the consumers, since they know that they are Muggles and will find wonderful everything that has the name "Pokémon".

Easily the worst Pokemon RPG. There is nothing remotely challenging, lots of features have been removed and the graphics are bland.

    - EASY, this game is only for kids.
    - A game with less content than normal Pokemon.
    - The "capture" with sensor move is poor, and bored.

This game is abysmal and its only mission is to pander to nostalgia cravings and GO fans and it's honestly offensive to people who love franchise for the story and gameplay of traditional games.

Simplified game mechanics, lack of content and lack of content's quality. This game is not what pokémon fans really want. Moreover, the strategy of getting Mew buying he pokeball plus is a robbery.

Could be an ok entry level, budget game for YOUNG kids on the 3DS - but as a full-priced Switch game, it's lacking in every way - feels uninspired and pretty boring.

I bought the game because a lot of people calling themselves true Pokémon fans wrote that it was the best Pokémon game ever. Even after reading the negative reviews I decided they were just salty because of the formula change. I was so wrong. The game itself it´s a mess. Tries to be a Pokémon Go and Classic Pokémon fusion, but fails at being as least as fun as the aforementioned. Graphics are nice and clean, but they look like something from a mobile game rather than a full- price Switch game. I played the original games so I kinda enjoyed the nostalgia ride, but after the initial euphoria ended, what I was left with was a boring easy, simplistic, annoying, overpriced and dull Google Play-tier game (pay walls included). So if you are planning to buy this, don´t be fooled, while is not as bad as some of the negative reviews say, it is definitely not a good Pokémon game. Expand

    What a lazy, overhyped garbage.
I have been a fan of the series ever since the very beginning. Munched up Red and Blue, then Yellow, then the amazing Gold, Silver and Crystal alllll the way to Sun and Moon. While there are ups and downs throughout the series, it was never this bad.
Its attempt to make it more 'casual-friendly' is simply too much. A lot of the complexity behind the game

A lot of the complexity behind the game is stripped away from the series and now you cannot even battle wild pokemons... all you can do is throw balls at them. and your pokemon gains exp from catching wild pokemon... Let's not debate if that makes any sense, the main issue is it is extremely boring. in contrast, back when you can battle wild pokemon, you can at least test the effectiveness of the your pokemons' skills and have a variety of sorts so it's more interactive than throw a pokeball, catch the pokemon, throw a ball, catch a pokemon, give all the excessive pokemon to professor, throw candy, throw a ball, catch a pokemon, fight a trainer....... this game is god awful and you should avoid it at all costs.

Even the crystal version available on their online shop is way better value and fun compared to this junk

This game is GAMEFREAK's way of delaying the main series game while making money until 2019. Those who bought this fell into their traps and are "encouraging" and allowing them to make mediocre games.

What new content? What graphics? Look at Zelda BOTW. THAT is a switch game. This is a 3Ds game on steroids.

If I had to sum up my problems with these games it would be that they're very shallow, unambitious and soulless. After having normally proportioned humans and non-grid based environments in Sun and Moon it feels like a huge regression to suddenly have chibi characters and unnaturally squared world designs again, especially since the Switch is a much more powerful console than the 3DS. ItIf I had to sum up my problems with these games it would be that they're very shallow, unambitious and soulless. After having normally proportioned humans and non-grid based environments in Sun and Moon it feels like a huge regression to suddenly have chibi characters and unnaturally squared world designs again, especially since the Switch is a much more powerful console than the 3DS. It doesn't help that it looks much cheaper than all other big Switch titles such as Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey or even Splatoon. That wouldn't really be a problem if it wasn't sold at the same price as these.

"But graphics aren't everything!" I can hear you say and you're absolute right. Sadly, the gameplay reflects the same half hearted, lackluster attitude as the game's looks. This 2018 game's map offers the exact same content as a Gameboy game from 1996. You might try the weak excuse of "It's a remake" but even that fails when the 2004 GBA remakes offered more content in form of the Sevii islands which also greatly expanded the amount of Pokemon you could encounter. LGPE has no such thing, no new post game areas, no way to encounter new Pokemon. It has the smallest regional dex with 153 since Diamond and Pearl but even GameFreak realised this and expanded it with Platinum. So this fully priced Switch game gives you less content than the 2004 GBA Kanto adventure and has the least Pokemon of any game since 2006.

Saying that LGPE are an overpriced, lazily made cash grab is at this point an understatement. But it even gets worse. The Pokeball plus accessory is the only way to obtain Mew in this way. Locking a Pokemon behind a 50$ paywell is just bad business practise. It's especially shocking to me that gamers are just accepting this since there was such a loud outcry againnst stuff like day 1 DLC, lootboxes and pay2win strategies. And GameFreak made sure you can't transfer Mew from Pokemon Go to Pokemon Let's Go. So they're fully aware of this and simply using it to exploit their customers.

I could go on about how the combat was stripped of all the mechanics that were introduced over the years such as abilities, hold items and natures or how the gym requirements further casualize a series that's already overblown with casualization but I think I've made my point. However, I do want to be fair and mention some positives for me like the usage of Pokemon on the overworld or that some characters were more fleshed out with more interactions.

On a technical level these games are fine. They're harmless fun for people who want to relive their childhood experiences of Kanto. But as someone who has been with this series for over 15 years I can't just ignore all of what I've said above. I can't ignore how much these games have been a regression from what came before and how exploitative and cheap they feel. It's not anyway near what the Switch or Pokemon as a franchise is capable of. And GameFreak is aware of that. They know they can just release mediocre, lackluster products and they will sell. That's the real reason why despite saying that on a technical level these games are fine I'm giving them such a low score. Scummy behavior like this should be discouraged as much as possible. I can only hope that Gen 8 will be better and have some actual effort put into them.

You start the game, same as the others, but you don't play the game quite the same. Half the fun has been removed. Where you used to be a trainer battling Pokemon, getting stronger, catching the ones you like and having engaging battles with other trainers, well, all of that is gone now. All you do is catch Pokemon. You get bonus multipliers for experience when you catch the same Pokemon multiple times in a row. You keep the ones you want and give the rest to professor Oak. He gives you candy as a reward. At first I thought this was kind of funny 'haha I'm turning Pokemon into chicken nuggets' then the sad, glooming shadow of realization finally struck me, this is the entire game. Catching Pokemon, which levels up your party, and turning the rest into candy. The battles with trainers are shallow and lack energy. Almost every trainer you meet only has one Pokemon and most gym leaders only have at least two. This makes all the battles short and unengaging which takes away the best part about being a 'pokemon trainer'. I cannot in my right mind leave a good review for this game. Your kids will enjoy it as a fun little past time activity, but if your like me and you grew up with the games and the cards, and you were looking for the next great game, this isn't it so save your money. The franchise doesn't care about the fans that stuck with them through the years. Which is something we will have to deal with.

I'd also like to leave a short review about the pokeball pro controller. As I get older and after working with my hands they have gotten stiff. The pokeball controller is way too small. I can not comfortably play the game with it for more than an hour. Again it's great for kids but trying to grip this little controller for more than an hour is pretty difficult for an adult.

A Honest review for both Lets go Games
I picked this game up Thursday morning off the Japaneses eshop it took around 2 hours to make it to the point in the game to receive the gift in the mobile game "Pokemon go". In that time i had a single lvl 30 Pokemon with 250 in each stat making the game so easy there was little point for me to finish the game. here are some pros and cons

-so easy my 3 year old beat it.
    -multiplayer is a giant letdown
-online is the biggest joke to try to connect with a friend
-capture mechanics are down right broken in docked mode
-unfaithful remakes as many things are changed
-only around 1/6th - 1/7th of the pokemon are available so forget using your favorites if its not Pikachu or Charizard
-end game content can be beaten with lvl 19 making it irreverent
-locks content behind a 50$ purchase

In the end save yourself the money and don't buy this unless you want to see what a HD Kanto game would look like without playing a game.

A simple, nostalgic return to the Kanto region, offers little if you are a series veteran eager for complexity and challenge. But if that's not your main interest, Pokemon Let's Go has it all! It's a simple, cute and fun game that will keep you hooked for hours. An excellent starting point for newcomers, and a great nostalgia trip for those in a search for one.

It’s hard to make sense of the game that’s basically a Switch port of iOS/Android remake of Pokemon Red/Green. Is it a step forward, step backward – or maybe just a shameless cash-in? Turns out, it’s a great remake – the world looks exactly as we imagined it back when we were staring at black and white pixels of original Red/Green. [Issue#235, p.44]
