by far the best pikmin game ive played, ive seen people rip at the coop mechanics and how it isnt like traditional coop where you would be able to control another captain, however i personally enjoy this type of 2 player gameplay even more :D both being the pebble pitcher and player 1 are both engaging and fun :D

It has a lot of content, yet it never feels like it is overdoing itself nor does it ever get overwhealming, the ammount of caves may seem too much at first, but the creativity of each cave and boss fight makes it worth it, and the best part, if you dont want to go through all of the caves, you dont need to! there is only a few caves to be completed for you to complete the game, so if you dont like 100% games, you still can enjoy it! The new night mode is a good twist to the gameplay, where you finally get to go to the world of PNF-404 at night, where you have to fend off multiple monsters in order to win, only a few are needed to play in order to complete the game, so if you dont like the game mode, you are not forced to play it either! Overall a good time for both hardcore fans and casual players! 100% would recommend. Expand

Playing Pikmin 4 made me feel a type of joy that I cannot describe. Before this game I would have trouble deciding which was my favorite game but Pikmin 4 made this very clear. The content it has is quality and quantity, the variety it brings from the caves to Oatchi and other things later on just make for a game that I cannot recommend enough.

As a fan of the series that has played every game in the franchise before Pikmin 4, I can say that Pikmin 4 has gone above and beyond the expectations I had for the game. It has both quantity and quality of gameplay and I found myself greatly enjoying every second I played. To anyone on the fence about buying this game, do it. Amazing mesh of the previous games with caves and all returns Pikmin types (except bulbmin) with new and returning enemies including variants of older enemies. The missions and upgrades are super useful and the hidden upgrades are nods to previous games which are very enjoyable. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People always say Pikmin is a childish game, I get it. but I feel like it's meant to be like this. fun for the whole family type thing. my first GameCube game was Pikmin along with Luigi's mansion so maybe I'm biased but give this game a playthrough. buy a physical so if you don't really like it you can sell it. but this game is nearly (if not better) than pikmin 2. so if you've ever played pikmin 2 you'll love this one. but this game does have its downsides. not as many as some people thing but still downsides. I feel like louie's side quest (normally the last one in the game other than sage leaf) was a very last minute "oh we need a bit more content" type quest. I think that the dog (oatchi) is very cute yes but he made the game too easy, I've played Pikmin since I was young and i still found myself riding around on oatchi almost everywhere. and it feels like they wanted that. the whole game, maybe for newer fans? rewind feature is cool but I think it should have been more limited. I only lost about 50 pikmin. The final boss was very cool and better than pikmin 3s final boss (in my opinion) but It's just the same all elements coming together in one big enemy you kill. but what else are they going to do realistically. I didn't really like tears very much so this releasing after was a good move for them. and this game is my favorite switch game no doubt Expand

It's easily my favorite Pikmin game that I've played now and, if it weren't for the absolutely atrocious loading times that plague this game, it would have been right there in my top 5 Switch games I've ever played. It feels like they had to sacrifice the loading times to get that rock solid 30 FPS as the game never dips once below that, at least from what I could tell, even when there's a ton of creatures on screen at once. I can't recommend this enough for anyone with a Switch. Expand

-The return of dungeons from Pikmin 2

-Couch co-op (haven’t played it, but apparently 2P throws rocks)
-Lots of arena style battles sprinkled in
-The Beach level is a work of art
-Retains morbid sense of humor from Pikmin 2

    Cons:
-Constantly skipping cutscenes and dialogue gets old (+ button is your friend)
-Splitting up squad into groups is still slightly trickier than it needs to be, especially with Otchi around
-Your command options change, somewhat confusingly, depending on whether you’re on Otchi or foot
-Otchi is a little OP, nerfs game a tad
-New horde mode is fun but thin, a little undercooked - would like to see this given more love in the future

Wonderful game, best parts of all the Pikmin games in one

The visuals are attractive, the controls are responsive and the world is immersive. This definitely makes up for a charming experience that will please and - most of the time - soothe players of all ages. As all Pikmin games, it still manages to feel frantic or eerie at points; that essence remains. The game overflows with collectibles and types of different species, and does an excellent job at returning enemies and introducing new ones. No matter how familiar you are with the Pikmin franchise, this 4th installment finds ways to keep you on track until the very end, even though the first hours might feel overwhelming to veteran players.

    World experience:
The world of Pikmin still coexists with our own in this game, and it seems Mr. Miyamoto and his team wanted to push that narrative further by the new unique over-world regions found in this game. However, at some points some may feel just a bit unoriginal, and I wish we'd have more verticality while exploring. Although, the underworld areas do make up for that sense of world diversity.

    Storytelling:
The narrative follows the same overall narrative as every other Pikmin game, but this time around you get to meet a lot more people that you could ever imagine coming from this license. All of those individuals have character traits that differentiate them. That coupled with the incredible amount of dialogue they have, and the excellent liveliness feelings of the natural regions give an amazingly built world.
Pikmin lore fans will also enjoy this entry thanks to some surprising elements that link up directly with older titles. Some questions are answered, and some new mysteries are brought up for how PNF-404 behaves.

    Difficulty:
For veteran players, the difficulty bar may often feel too low. And there is no reason for Nintendo to not add more difficulity either. This isn't "because it's Pikmin'. Look at Kirby, HAL managed to keep a really good balance there. I'm sure there are many ways to combat this in the Pikmin series.
Caves make up for a satisfying puzzle experience, but even then there is still room for more advanced trickeries that could mush our brains like I wish it did.
Your friendly dog companion also makes the game easier, and by a lot. Some times, it is greatly used as a puzzle element through its jumping ability, but the other traits (that you can upgrade!) often feel like you own a portable swiss knife that will get you through every challenge. In some sparse cases the dog also makes the Pikmin useless. Yikes...
The hardest challenges may come from the few enemies underground that will roll all over your Pikmin and make you return to the surface illico. That is not a bad thing, but I wish I encountered situations that felt as hard as this, with lighter consequences that flatten my family of eighty to death in an instant.

    Gameplay:
The overworld experience is as pleasing as the other entries.
Caves are amazing puzzles, that live up to the ones from Pikmin 2.
Dandori battles can turn really frantic and confusing, but stay very fun. It really is a bummer though that there is no online support for them!!
Dandori challenges is the most satisfaction I got from the puzzle experiences in this game. Thankfully they challenge you to beat your own records after the first completion.
Night expeditions feel way too easy sadly. The Glow Pikmin type is way too overpowered, as they essentially resist to anything except being eaten, and they teleport to you when idle. The main reward is the only reason I keep on doing those missions (aside for the 100% completion), but this reward... won't scale with the difficulty...? The secondary reward can also make the caves way easier too, which could feel overwhelming to greater players least when it already feels too easy.
The gadgets come handy in every game mode they're in. You also don't get all of them that fast (which is good).

    Other few notes:
    - The two-player experience in the main exploration is as useless as Mario Galaxy games. A second player could have controller Oatchi, as you are able to do that on your own.
    - The soundtrack is excellent, and comes with a few notable surprises. Most of it is forgettable but is great for the atmosphere.
    - The high amount of text is very well distributed. The dialogue is only overwhelming at first and treasure/species descriptions are absolute gold. Although at some points the characters feel like they are backseating by reminding you to pluck Pikmins or save the ones in danger
    - The items in your bag are almost useless most of the time. Although I feel like some players will enjoy trying them out and using them to figure out new strategies.

Several quality of life features have been added to make the experience more smooth and user friendly, such as the dog Oatchi (who is a genuine highlight), a more dynamic camera, and auto lock-on. These changes do make the game quite a bit easier than previous series titles, but overall their addition is for the most part appreciated. The amount of content is really quite large, and pretty much all of it is enjoyable. The story is basic, but the quality of the writing is quite good and there's plenty of charm. The music is fairly good and is line with soundtracks of the previous games, but it's the sound design that has seen a noticeable boost. In a related area, HD Rumble has been implemented throughout and is very well done.

In terms of complaints, the tutorial contains too much text, and is a bit overbearing. the constant reminder that you can rewind time when you fail can be annoying, as there's no way to turn it off. I also didn't love some of the limits set on the player, such as starting with a limited amount of Pikmin and only being able to have three types out at a time. There are also a few too many upgrades for my liking, and I found some of them were not really neccessary.

Pikmin 4 is certainly the best entry point into the series, and in many ways surpasses the other titles. It does have it's issues but all in all it's a triumph.

There’s so much attention to detail, so much content, and so many prior attributes from past games, especially from 1 and 2. However, what Pikmin 4 does most important of all is that it evolved the series much further than any prior game before it, the maps are so large and with caves, they simply add much more depth to the areas, and unlike Pikmin 2, the maps remain full and satisfying to explore instead of heavily relying on the caves for content. Speaking of caves, they’re so much more polished this time around, the theming of them are so much more interesting and in many cases, they’re just as beautiful as the the overworld maps. Another great thing is that the Pikmin feel a bit more balanced this time around, and the fact that all prior Pikmin are utilized with new ones equally is honestly a dream come true, one of my biggest disappointments with Pikmin 3 is that whites and purples weren’t included in the main story. Another strength of the game is that the charm of PNF-404 (or the Pikmin Planet) is cranked to 11 with the inclusion of more human influence than ever with one area being straight up a house and while it does break the illusion that humanity has been gone for a very long time, I think it adds a new flavor and makes 4 standout against prior entries in terms of aesthetic. Anyway, if you’re still reading this, you can tell I’m trying to be as spoiler free as possible, but let me tell you, as a Pikmin fan, this game feels as monumental of a jump as Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild does for their respective series. I urge anyone interested in the game to try it out as it’s very inviting and difficulty is low at first, however be warned that it ramps up gradually, making its mission to hit you with the craziest stuff at anytime, and as a Pikmin 2 biased fan, I’m very pleased by it. Now that all my praises are out of the way, I’ll finally talk about the stuff that keeps this at a 9/10 instead of a 10 out of 19 for me. Autolock… this is a big one, in prior games you could freely aim where you through and in 3, they added a lock on button to help you aim more precisely which was honestly perfect for those who weren’t the greatest at aiming, however for some reason, the team thought it would be a good idea to have the game automatically lock your pointer with whatever’s around you and while on paper it would seem like it would be a great help for newcomers, it quickly becomes a problem when there’s multiple enemies or an enemy near intractable objects, meaning that if your in the middle of throwing Pikmin at something, one slight movement of your pointer will cause it to jump to a different object, and oddly at the same time it feels like you have to fight the pointer to put at the right object… it’s not the most well thought out thing in my opinion and most of the fans I’ve talked with are on the same boat. I’m hoping that Nintendo fixes this via an update where we could simply switch it off, which is something it we should’ve been able to do from the start. Anyway, there’s much more I wanna talk about, but I don’t wanna spoil hard, I really hope that this game is a great success as it’s very unbelievably deserved, Pikmin remains as my favorite video game series, and Pikmin 4 only puts it even more ahead of the pact for me. Tends to be a bit too easy; Too many loading screens keep breaking up the action; Night expeditions can be a bit repetitive.

    Thoughts-
Even with the few relatively minor issues it has, Pikmin 4 is an excellent game. Coming a decade after the series’ last mainline instalment and eight years after it was first said to be nearing the end of development, Pikmin 4 had significant expectations to live up to, and it does so with surprising ease and confidence. It’s yet another significant step forward in a series that has only ever improved with each new entry, and proves once again that Pikmin deserves way more love and attention than it gets. In what’s clearly the twilight era of the Switch’s life, Nintendo has delivered yet another gem in its adorned library.

    Super recomendo!

Pikmin 4 is a fantastic game with great visuals and fun, relaxing and addictive gameplay. I just got into Pikmin this year and this game made me quite happy I did.

To start, the graphics are very good. Nintendo should use this graphical engine on more of their games, probably even most of them. The items you are collecting look extremely realistic and the lighting is very good.

To start, the graphics are very good. Nintendo should use this graphical engine on more of their games, probably even most of them. The items you are collecting look extremely realistic and the lighting is very good.

The gameplay is also quite fun and they added a lot compared to previous games. I enjoyed how they brought back all the previous Pikmin from the previous games instead of picking and choosing which ones to bring back. It was great to see the Pikmin from both Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 3, some of which have never been seen together before. The ice Pikmin are also a nice addition. But I think the best new addition is Oatchi. When I first saw the dog in the trailers, I wasn't completely sold. It made it seem like some of the Pikmin might even be useless completely, but he really does add a lot and make the game better. The ability to sniff out treasures, survivors and onions was a huge addition that made the game much better. They also made the game VERY beginner friendly and I think this might be the best starting point in the series.

I don't care much for how they changed the number of Pikmin you can have. In previous games, you could always just have 100, but here they make you start with a much lower number and collect garlic to increase the number of Pikmin you can have. They also made it so you can only have 3 different types of Pikmin at a time. I think this was kind of dumb, especially given how they let you have access to so many types of Pikmin in one game, it's a real shame you can't just have them all at once.

I really liked the additional characters in this game and the upgrade system added quite a bit. I was surprised by how much content is in this game. There's almost as much new stuff post game as there is before you roll the credits. In fact, I was slightly annoyed by some of the stuff they held for the post credits. Without spoiling anything, there were a few things I think should have been just a part of the main game instead.

I really like all the new options as far as how you can play the game. The auto targeting makes this game much more accessible. I do wish the camera controls were a bit better, as they can sometimes get a bit funky when fighting certain enemies, but outside of that the different control options are very good. I love the upgrade system. It gives me even more to collect and makes me want to keep collecting everything.

All in all, this is a very fun, very addictive, very relaxing game that was clearly designed with new players in mind. If you've never played a Pikmin game before, this is a great starting point. And if you were already a fan of Pikmin, you'll especially love this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine a game, where everything good from Pikmin 1, Pikmin 2, Pikmin 3 and the Pikmin ROM-Hacks comes together to blend into a phenomenal part of the Pikmin series. This is what Pikmin 4 is.

Pikmin 4, although not without flaws, improves on almost every point of criticism of the previous games.
It is heavily inspired by Pikmin 2 at its core, but also features a side story mode similar to Pikmin 1, while having graphical fidelity and game mechanics from Pikmin 3. This game, if you choose to complete it 100%, offers around 35 hours of gameplay, around 20 hours if you play through it casually, with much variation in its content. The positives are not hard to find in this game:

    - it features huge "worlds" to explore
    - you can go as slow or fast as you like
    - the difficulty depends on wether you use the assistance the game offers (so you can choose how hard of a game you want)
    - in the main campaign, every Pikmin type is included, plus the new Ice Pikmin in the overworld
    - the Pikmin "AI" is heavily improved
    - the Pikmin types are sort of balanced (except for the Ice Pikmin)
    - the "Upgrade"-mechanic for your captain and Oatchi is very nice, you may choose your own playstyle
    - the Dandori Challenges and Battles are hard if you're going for Platinum, but otherwise fun
    - cave exploration now takes away 1/6 of your overall daytime
    - a lot of familiar content from previous entries (enemies, cave layouts), but also a bunch original stuff
    - nothing feels "overused"
    - you do not need to backtrack to previous worlds for 100% completion
    - there are a lot of easter eggs in this game
    - the game has very good graphics, and bugs are very unlikely (as per usual for the Unreal Engine 5)

Of course, those aren't all aspects that have been improved, and it is clear that the developers really understood the criticism of the previous games, and the games themselves. It feels like this was really a passion project. But of course, not everything is perfect about the game, the negatives are:

    - The auto lock-on feature is not well suited for later parts of the game, especially with a lot of targets at once, and you can't disable it for some reason, which is especially weird considering that the game has good controls and customizable hotkeys
    - there is no motion control for some reason. They had it in Pikmin 3 Deluxe, but not in this game, which is a bit odd
    - the multiplayer mode for the campaign is a HUGE downgrade from Pikmin 3 Deluxe's multiplayer. For some reason, the 2nd player just gets to use a sling shot, Mario Galaxy style, instead of an actual multyplayer. There is no real reason for that, Oatchie is a playable captain, just like your main captain, and can do almost the same things (some Oatchie abilities need to be unlocked), so it would have been great if the 2nd player could just use Oatchie as a playable captain
    - the Soundtrack for the game is very calm and atmospheric, fitting for a game like Pikmin, but it sadly has no rememorable tracks like Pikmin 1 or 2, although some tracks are reused
    - some features, some even from previous entries in the series, like the swarm function, are locked behind progression, and can only be unlocked when it is too late to be useful.

Overall, I would consider Pikmin 4 to be the best entry in the series, and with Pikmin 1 + 2 and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Switch, people who have not played the first 3 games should definitely check those out. For old-grown fans of the franchise like me, this game is a must play. You will not be disapointed. This game just offers a lot of fun if you're into this sort of game, and is very beginner friendly. It is consistently good, and with only a few rough edges.

You can ride on your pup to smack enemies and objects out of your way. When exploring, you can't just go anywhere you want to in the game. When you reach a certain area that's supposed to be a bridge, there is no bridge to cross. You have to make sure that you have enough diamonds to reach that area and have enough Pikmin to help build it for you. Your Pikmin have to go into one of the spaceships in the base area to recieve the bridge parts by making them pay for the diamonds first. You have to be patient when you're doing that, which I like. Going into the underground caves are a great way to recieve more items, beat tougher enemies, face bosses and find Castaways that you have to rescue. It's amazing that you have to use certain types of Pikmin depending on where you're going sometimes. The only thing i wish i saw in the game is when you have to collect fruit to make yourself a smoothie after the day is over each day. That was another to survive in the game. You had to make sure you had enough smoothies to drink each day. Dandori battle is the funnest mode in the game and it's another way for trying to rescue a castaway. You have to collect the most points as fast as you possibly can by having your pup and Pikmin snatch items from your opponents. Your opponents will do the same to you too. The music in the game is very relaxing. The only problem with this game is that sometimes its on the easy, but its excellent nonetheless. Expand

The game has less puzzles than pikmin 3, but it really makes up for it in pretty much every other aspect. I like how dandori battles are interspersed throughout the game. It adds a lot of variety and they are generally quite well made (though I don't like how the screen is cut in half it feels weird). I also have an issue with how much information about the pikmin world is still left unanswered after beating the game. We see many more human constructions, but are still left in the dark as to why PNF-404 is in its current state, (Why are human creations still in pristine condition if the ecosystem has seemingly evolved so drastically? What is causing so many tiny people to crash-land on the planet? Why is Louie so weird?). Hopefully Pikmin 5 answers these questions when it finally comes out in 2040, instead of leaving it all to speculation. Would highly recommend the game though, its definitely worth the money.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. -THIS REVIEW GOES INTO EVERYTHING IN THIS GAME, INCLUDING POST GAME STUFF-

This is an amazing Pikmin game, it takes a lot of elements from 2 but makes so many good changes to it:

    - Caves are no longer randomly generated (thank god), this was one of the major problems I had with 2 so I'm really happy they removed that.
    - Caves are now in way shorter but there are way more, this helps make caves feel less boring as there is a lot of variety in caves now.
    - This is also what makes the final cave so impactful, having only around 5 sublevel long caves the entire game makes the big 20 sublevel final cave so memorable.
    - Amazing final boss, I was very afraid when I depleted its health bar the first time that I thought it was over in seconds but the extra phases were a lot of fun, especially the final one (glow pikmin's are very useful on this fight).
    - THERE IS AN ENTIRE PIKMIN 1 STYLE MODE WHERE YOU PLAY AS OLIMAR! This really surprised me and it was a lot of fun, really brings back the 15 day time limit in a fun new way.
    - Completing this side mode unlocks some of the hardest challenges in the game, getting platinum on these 10 missions was a lot of fun but very difficult (story 7 still haunts me).
    - Unlocking the White and Purple onions this way was a nice way of making sure these 2 are hard to get.
    - Night missions are a lot of fun, especially the later ones get kind of tough with you having to balance getting more glow pikmin and killing the really strong monsters like smoky progg which isn't as deadly as in Pikmin 1 but to compensate they just throw multiples at you at once.
    - There are also some really fun rewards from beating all the side missions. After you beat the final boss Louie will also give you some missions, beating all these unlocks a pretty useless but funny piece of equipment as well (it was actually useful once when I was trying to get a platinum medal in one of the stories of the Secret Trial of the Sage Leaf.
    - I really liked the balancing of the Pikmin types, I do think generally Purple's are still a bit too strong but I personally don't mind as they are relatively hard to get (especially if you don't do the secret trial of the sage leaf)
    - I was also a big fan of the new progression system. Having to upgrade your abilities, Oatchi's abilities and the size of your Pikmin was really satisfying.

Even though I love the game I do think there are a couple of things that I dislike:

    - I love that there are a total of 6 levels (the most in the series), none of them come close to looking as stunning or interesting as the levels in Pikmin 3, but they are generally more fun to play in.
    - Pikmin 3 had amazing boss fights which Pikmin 4 didn't have.
    - I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the auto lock on, I personally thought Pikmin 3 Deluxe handled the controls much better, but it wasn't a deal breaker.
    - Oatchi is a bit too powerful sometimes, especially if you upgrade his strenght to 100 (which is really easy to do). This becomes especially powerful once you have the swallow skill unlocked which makes carrying heavy objects a breeze.
    - Can't believe they brought back the doomsday apparatus (isn't actually a big deal in this game because there is a purple onion but still, can't believe they did it)

Wonderful post game content, and a surprisingly diverse variety of pikmin, enemies, modes, and level environments to encounter. The story, while fairly simple, is cute and fits well into this package Nintendo has created. That being said, this game has one fatal flaw that prevents it from resonating as a perfect 10: The dialogue! Pikmin 4’s dialogue is an absolute nightmare to get through. The writing is corny, it’s stretched very thin with many characters stating the obvious, and it often finds itself explaining the solutions to puzzles without letting you try to figure things out on your own first. Pikmin 3 had much better dialogue and writing, so it was very disappointing to see Pikmin 4 downgrade.

Overall I think this is still a must play Nintendo Switch title. I hope this series can continue to grow because it is incredibly underrated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very fun game. I've only played 3 deluxe so far, but I think this one might be the superior game. The visuals are so damn good! The variety in enemies, constantly encountering new enemies, the boss fights, the caves, the level design, Oatchi, the dandori tests... almost everything is perfect!

I really like that you need to upgrade your onion to be able to have more pikmin in your squad. Farming in the beginning so you already have 100 pikmin is boring in my opinion. Constantly expanding your squad is very rewarding!

The multiplayer mode isn't that great though. Missed opportunity to make P2 control Oatchi, but I could see the problems that would arise (e.g. how would entering caves work?).

After rescuing Olimar in the 4th area, I thought the game was over. Luckily, I was wrong! 2 whole new areas to explore, a side mode where Olimar needs to collect his missing ship parts within a time limit and a challenging big dandori test to obtain some special items; this game is beefy (especially if you try to get platinum medals)!

The night mode is a refreshing twist on the Pikmin formula. But I'm sad to say that it's quite repetitive and almost all stages are pretty easy to beat (apart from the last area!). I switched between night mode, the regular story and Olimar's side mode so I wouldn't have a burnout on constantly playing the nightmode. I wish we could have explored the area freely though. Tower defense is fun and all, but you're still "stuck" on a small portion of the area, constantly defending.

The new pikmin types are decent. Both ice and glow pikmin are quite overpowered. Freezing an enemy with ice pikmin makes them very easy to kill with your other pikmin and Oatchi. But being able to freeze water is very "cool"! Glow pikmin rarely die, making the night mode even easier!

Some people say that the intro sequence is very long, but I don't mind honestly. Setting up the story and introducing many new players to the franchise needs some time! It might lead to people not wanting to continue playing the game, but after the first area the dialogue drastically decreases.

All in all, I highly recommend this game. If you are a hardcore pikmin fan, or if you have never played a pikmin game before, or if you are pretty new to the series (like me); I bet you are gonna have a good time!

Now for things I like, the upgrade system in the game is a nice way of making the player feel stronger even if they can only use 3 types of Pikmin, dandori challenges are time trials that test you on how fast you can get high scores with whatever Pikmin they give you (also with your oatchi upgrades) they are fast-paced and probably the most fun part of the game for me, the bosses of the caves present some forms of actual difficulty that I think anyone can appreciate

from what I can tell the game is a revamp of the series with an alternate timeline which makes it a great game compared to other games before it, I think it would be better with a patch that allows the player to increase the difficulty but in the franchise, I think it will be viewed as the worst of the Pikmin games once the hype dies down not saying it's bad but the other 3 objectively better

the biggest reason for this is the dead overworlds that have 0 enemies respawns to keep you engaged and while I said it's a noob friendly game I think pikmin 3 is a better place to start

I do have some issues with the game, there is essentially no replay value, the 30+ hours hurts what little replay value the game has with enemies not re spawning at all, once you beat it that's it since there is no ng+ or difficulty option. Auto lock is a common complaint ive seen, not having an option to turn it off is crazy in 2023. Redundant gear/oatchi abilities, timer meaning less than it ever has been. ease of the game in general. I love the game as a whole as a pikmin fan but there are alot of small issues that add up. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is clearly the best pikmin game and easily will be game of the year. The gameplay loop is incredibly fun and addicting! And by the end makes me want more.

There are a few flaws that prevent it from being a perfect 10/10.

First is the tutorial.......... IT DRAGS ON. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO END. Its was okay for my first time playing because I didn't understand half the things it was throwing at me. BUT REALLY THE SECOND TIME AROUND TOOK HOURS..... THE TUTORIAL ALONE IS EASILY 2 HOURS TO COMPLETE.

The second problem of the game is a small problem, the plot. Its really boring, I get why they did the crash landing (I would be disappointed if they stopped making crash landings part of the plot) but really? "Olimar crash landed on PNF 404! He calls for help. The rescue corps arrive! Uh oh they also crash land. This isn't even mentioning how they re-use sparklium and they reboot the plot of the previous games.

The third and final flaw is the difficulty. It takes well over 10 HOURS for anything that isn't BABY FOOD. IT TAKES TILL AREA 5 FOR THINGS TO GET MILDLY CHALLENGING. Oh yeah ENEMIES DON'T RESPAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHICH MEANS IN LIKE 1 DAY OF BEING AT AN AREA IT WILL BECOME A FREAKING BARRAN DESERT WITH CORPSES LAYING AROUND. IT WILL LOOK LIKE A WARZONE. NOTHING STANDING. EVERYTHING IS A CORPSE. THE PIKMIN HAVE DOMINATED EVERY. LAST. CREATURE.

To this masterpiece's credit there are a few challenging parts. Like the fourth area's nightmode and the post game's night mode was nothing to scoff at (But I personally struggled more on the pre post game night mode). The final area has a few challenging parts. Specific dungeons called "Oasis of order" (A challenge level) And "Cavern for a king". There is also a hidden dungeon unlocked after beating a side mode called "Trial of the sage leaf" Which is a series of 10 slightly challenging challenge stages.

Ps- The dandori battles later game should have gotten harder

Overall the game is incredibly fun, very relaxing and overall my pick for game of the year.

Ps- Autolock on is cause for half of my pikmin deaths

While you wait, you pummel the button to no effect, which is so frustrating, I quickly switched from the next button to the skip button. And while you fortunately can skip pretty much the whole story this way, you still have to sit through so much meaningless, elongated chit-chat, it makes the game feel sluggish and annoying.

Once you unlock radar, which is very early in the game, the game tells you where all the treasures are too so nothing is ever really hidden or challenging on locating everything. It was ok, I think hype around the game is a little overblown as it's not necessarily very fun, more so just something cozy, light hearted and with a good loop behind it to mindlessly go about tasks.

It really was repetitive, the differences in pikmin didn't make a huge change to gameplay as they ultimately all did the same thing except color coordinating what pikmin is used to destroy what wall, not very clever and just felt a little cheap. This is my first pikmin game too, so i really didn't have any nostalgia for this type of gameplay to overhype my expectation.

The puzzles were not challenging either, Its hardly a puzzle when you the same solution is used for nearly every puzzle.

Boss fights also were meh, you have so many pikmin you can just kill most bosses with sent your entire swarm and they'll go down in a few seconds.

I think a small child would enjoy this game because of its simplicity. If I was a child though I'd probably get a little bored of it too once reach the 4th area and really just doing the same thing over and over again. It felt like work or doing chores.

The things I did like was the camp writing conversation, treatures were fun to see their description and the night time tower defense was fun.

Overall it was an ok time for someone looking for a mindless time sink, it's however nothing very memorable as it doesn't leave a lasting impression.

    Cons:
    - A step backwards in terms of boss design from Pikmin 3
    - Pikmin limits on the field
    - Oatchi oversimplifies the game and feels unnecesary as he completes tasks that could have easily been done by different pikmin types. It almost feels as though the 3 type limit was introduced just so that Oatchi would have an artificially justified use.
    - Fewer captains means less multitasking capabilities. This effectively leads to less "dandori" in Nintendo's "dandori" game.
    - Classically difficult bosses have been oversimplified to the point where they are mind-numbingly easy to defeat.
    - Lack of creativity in boss designs following Pikmin 3 led to the development team simply reusing bosses from Pikmin 2.
    - When caves were announced to be returning, something along the lines of Pikmin 1's Forest Navel or Pikmin 3's caves was expected. Instead, Nintendo fell back on the archaic Pikmin 2 design philosophy, and while these caves follow their own unique designs, they fail to keep up with the above-world enhanced level design.
    - A lack of real two-player functionality as was seen in Pikmin 3 Deluxe. This feels like a harsh step backwards for a feature that was perfect for the series.
    - Lack of general captain and individual Pikmin animations
    - Way too much dialogue for a Pikmin game
    - Lack of control options and toggles, forcing players to use the autolock feature and limiting overall variability in gameplay
    - First game since Pikmin 1 to not have an expansive Challenge Mode outside of the main story
    - Game is simply too easy and lacks any real challenge for players of the past Pikmin games. It was a common criticism that Pikmin 3 was too easy, but it seems as though there aren't ever any real consequences in Pikmin 4.
    - The night mode feels very "thrown together" and definitely does not live up to its potential
    - No online multiplayer

    Conclusion:
It feels as though Pikmin fans have been so starved for content ever since the famous interview about Pikmin 4 being near completion that they are willing to praise Pikmin 4 for anything good and simply ignore the good aspect of past games that have been removed or glossed over. As a fan, I am very happy that Pikmin 4 has been released and will likely sell well compared to other entries in the series, as it is the first new Pikmin game to be released on a well-selling console. However, it would be ignorant to pretend as though this is a perfect game. As a whole, Pikmin 4 is a good entry, but it sacrifices many of the things that make the other three games great. Hopefully Nintendo can take a little more time in fully fleshing out Pikmin 5 once they gain the confidence in the series that the higher Switch release sales numbers will undoubtedly provide.

Nintendo's current game design philosophy seems to not include the word CHALLENGE. A balanced challenge is not present in any game they make these days including this one. Many players are able to have fun in a game that poses no challenge whatsoever (like the new Paper Mario, the new 3D mario, etc. etc.) but I can't.

Pikmin 4 has probably the best over-world design in the series, but serious mistakes have been made.
    - It’s way Too easy.

    And so many more issues.

Nintendo still hasn’t made an overall good Pikmin game. That it takes over potentially over 5 Pikmin games to finally get the basics right across the board is a joke. I also blame N cultists for this situation.

Still, the basic formula of a Simple tactical & task driven game, still has moderate pleasure to its fundamentals.

I'm a huge Pikman fan. I played 1 and 2 on the Gamecube, 1 and 2 on the Wii, Pikmin 3 on the Wii U, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Switch. This is easily the worst Pikmin game out of the series.

I'm a huge Pikman fan. I played 1 and 2 on the Gamecube, 1 and 2 on the Wii, Pikmin 3 on the Wii U, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Switch. This is easily the worst Pikmin game out of the series.

    1. The controls are overcomplicated and poorly implemented
This game has a lot of buttons that you can press. I found myself fumbling the controls 10 hours into the game still. There's just too many buttons to remember, all of which are extremely contextual. The game stops you from throwing more than the minimum Pikmin required onto objects.

    2. The dog takes too much focus away
There's a progression tree for the dog, and the dog can pretty much do everything the Pikmin can do. Pikmin latch onto the dog, which takes away the feeling of having a mass army trailing you. Some tasks REQUIRE the dog too.

    3. There is a really bad auto-lock on in this game. You can't turn it off.
There's an auto-lock feature that causes your cursor to snap onto enemies and objects. It's really sticky and I couldn't get used to it. Some may find this helpful if they have trouble aiming in games, but it can be really hard to target the enemy you want with the auto-lock. The manual lock-on isn't great as it randomly decides to disengage.

    4. The game constantly backseats you
The characters in this game never shut up. They will constantly backseat you. If you leave a Pikmin unplucked, they will remind you to pluck it every few minutes. If a single Pikmin catches fire, they will tell you to whistle it back. They state the obvious no matter how many hours you've been playing for.

    5. The tutorials drag out for forever
Pikmin 1, 2, and 3 gave you access to Pikmin and the core "Pikmin" experience of growing your army fairly quickly after a minimum of 2 minutes. In this game, it takes about 30 minutes (if you don't skip the dialogue, about 10 minutes if you do) in order for you to get access to an Onion and grow your Pikmin. Even after this, the game constantly interrupts you for another hour with cutscenes telling you what each and everything does.

    6. The game tells you what Pikmin to use
The game recommends what type of Pikmin you should bring. Every area in this game can be completed with the three recommended Pikmin. The dungeons in this game also tell you what Pikmin you should bring, and automatically sets your squad of Pikmin to those types. You can change it after the fact, but there's hardly any ever reason to change your Pikmin up. On top of this, there is a 3 Pikmin type limit that stops you from mixing up your squad in unique ways. There is no strategy or thought to what Pikmin you want to bring out.

    7. The writing in this game is atrocious, and the story is convoluted.
All of the dialogue in this game is completely flat. It's not even memorable or laughable bad. It's just garbage text with no meaning constantly being spewed at the screen. All of the characters are one note. The story retcons the events of Pikmin 1 and so it desperately tries to make the stories of 2 and 3 make sense, but it fails to do that.

    8. The game is too long and has no replayability
The entire game is progression based. Once I put this game down I got sick to my stomach at the thought of having to play the game again and do the progression mechanics all over again. The length of the game actively harms the good of it. To 100% the game's campaign, it takes about 20 hours. Speaking of which...

    9. There is no mission mode
The campaign in this game is more or less the only way to play. You can play the Dandori Battles mode against your friend or against a CPU, but you have to unlock all the maps through the story. Get bent if you want to download this game and play against a friend. Gotta unlock it all first.

    10. The co-op in this game is not true co-op
Player 2 is forced to throw pebbles and items. They don't get to play as a captain.

    11. Too many puzzles
Half the caves in this game are puzzles. Not a whole lot of strategy, just puzzling. Some may enjoy this more, but I didn't.

    12. The music in this game is generic and forgettable
The music in this game is... can I say this? Can I just say it's flat out garbage? Not a single one of the songs stuck with me. Almost all of it is generically whimsical. Any returning tracks are butchered beyond belief and don't fit in the game.

    13. You don't blast off into lower orbit
This is a "returning fans" opinion, but one of the most memorable things about Pikmin was flat-out removed. You instead go off and land somewhere else on the planet. Doesn't ruin the game, but it's still worthwhile to mention, I think.

Character limit stops me from talking about the positives, but the negatives end up outweighing the positives in the end. Pikmin 4 feels less like a strategy game and more like a puzzle adventure game. It feels like it wanted to be mainstream and streamlined too much and so all in all it was a fairly forgettable experience compared to the original trilogy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. one of my most anticipated games of all time as a diehard pikmin fangirl! ...oh no.

I was bored for a lot of this nearly 30-40 hour game, this game is long, and yes, i beat the entire thing, did all the louie stuff, beatthe final boss, got all 8 of the onions, got all the castaways, the treasures, olimar's shipwreck tale, all of it.

So positives: Very charming and very pretty game! Very beginner friendly too (at the beginning anyway) and definitely nintendo's second attempt to not alienate non rts players like they did with pikmin 2. The characters are still funny sometimes and I loooove Louie shenanigans, his antics really succeeded in making the later half interesting, especially after i had to grind purples by playing the sage leaf stuff just to get the golden bar treasure (one of the worst gaming experiences of my life to be honest). i love oatchi as a character too he's very cute and so are the pikmin! Strangely enough, the CAVES managed to be the most fun part of the game for me, which was astounding considering pikmin 2 made me never want to think about them again. The bosses are AWESOME too! The final boss had like one really stupid phase but other than that they're all cool fan service or groovy long legs (best part of the entire game) the puzzles were fine, dandori battles were fun to blow up all of louie's pikmin and win, the dandori challenges were fine too. Oh yeah! Don't think I'm not gonna point out how much smarter/convenient the pikmin AIs are, even if I think a lot of the new stuff like rewinding or the idlers alert and homesick signal is easy baby mode (until the ending bits), the tools and countless accessories you can get are very useful! the music is fine.

okay so negatives: this game is long. in my opinion, way too long. I feel like the game is too big for its own good, both in playtime and size. Half of the time I'm spending sitting on this dog walking around these beautiful but pretty barren feeling areas. They're nothing like the small yet lively areas of the previous games. They're so boring to navigate through because they take forever and it also doesn't want to make me replay this game like ever again. i admittedly don't like how the night expeditions take up a day too, which means the total day count is going to be up in like the 40s, which is a new high for pikmin. at the very least the expeditions were entertaining enough (although way easier than they were made out to be). all in all, very unsatisfying for someone like me to want to optimize like I do 1 or 3, there's little incentive I could have for wanting to go fast to get my objectives, especially because the objective just doesn't get at me like 1 or 3's either. I don't care about wanting to know these castaways or my crew, there is simply too many damn characters for me to properly like any of them. I don't care to go faster or have any personal motivation like Olimar getting to see his family, Koppai's food crisis, or hell, even the debt had more personal motivation for me because those casts were tiny and easier to know them on a deeper level. Don't get me started on the leaflings, I straight up never want to hear the word "dandori" again. The only characters I could reasonably care about were oatchi, olimar, and louie and to a small extent shepherd, colin, and yonny (because they're the only rescue corps who actually feel like they have a presence on anything in the game) its also just not fun to finish from a gameplay standpoint too because playing with two different controlling captains is a cool idea but it felt like most of the areas were built around being able to jump, which the captain can't do, but oatchi can't use the charge ability which is useful on certain spots, so half the time it just felt more convenient to have the two together because everytime i'd try to split up it would just be inconvenient, both by clunkiness and also because there'd be SOME obstacle in the way i'd need the other captain for. Learning the area would be a good solution but guess what the areas are still stupid massive and learning all of that would be a giant headache. i hate the camera, it feels like its trying to focus more on the pretty landscapes than the gameplay i needed to look at. if you want to show off the pretty landscapes, give me pikmin 3's koppad camera, boom easy. i also hate the auto aiming stuff, trying to work with it has gotten my pikmin thrown into the void or made collecting something super annoying more often than not i much would've preferred what they did in pikmin 3. Maybe I just don't like open worldish games.

okay im done now. pikmin did it again, made a new game with the same formula but a completely different play structure than the last installments, again! There's now a new pikmin game for a different selection of players, making selecting a definitive best even more impossible. This is still a good game as its hard to screw up pikmin, i just didn't like it as much...

This, for me, is the Etsy pikmin I've even played and probably the worst Nintendo game too. Nintendo have made some of the best games ever and all represented a challenge. There is also some sort of story but it's mind numbing. In fact, this is the first time I've ever feel asleep whilst playing a game!

    A truly monotonous borefest.

This game is complete garbage. The greedy developers are charging $60 for an indie quality game. The graphics are complete trash. The textures are pukeworthy. The animations are laughable. This whole art style stuff is just an excuse for developers to be cheap and lazy. When I pay $60 I expect top-notch AAA quality. That is exactly what this game lacks. The physics are beyond horrible. The gameplay is boring and repetitive. The story is terrible with poorly written dialogue. The auto-lock is annoying. Boss fights are poorly designed.

The local co-op campaign multiplayer is a complete joke and very limited. All the second player does is throw stuff. Are you freaking kidding me? This isn't a true co-op experience. Pikmin 3 Deluxe offers an actual co-op experience, so why can't they do it with this game? It just goes to show how greedy and lazy these developers have become. I recommend you pick this game up until it's $10. Although it's unlikely it'll ever drop that low, so I don't recommend this game at all.

This game came with a free Pikmin steel water bottle at Walmart online. The only thing the developers got right, even if it has nothing to do with the actual game. Probably sold out by now, but the fact I got a Collector's Edition quality item at no extra cost is biblical. And no CDPR, your stupid stickers and "free DLC" is nothing to brag about. You want to be "consumer friendly"? Then give me something like this. Seeing how Sony games are a bunch of movies, they need to ship their games with good quality popcorn and a 2L soda at no extra cost. That's the least they could do after increasing the price to $70 for just half of the game. You do that Sony, I won't give you a zero guaranteed. If developers are going to release expensive garbage, at least be generous enough to give me decent physical items for free. Here's a 2 for the generosity, even if this game deserves a 0.

In an attempt to make Pikmin 4 a good entry title for people who might experience this franchise for the first time, Nintendo forgot that there are fans following the series since the first title.

Pikmin limit in the overworld, pikmin type limit, pikmin task limit (the game stops you from putting more pikmins that needed for a task with an auto stop feature that annoys the dandori experience a lot)

Tutorials are neverending, the corps never shut the f up. Oatchi is getting hurt, pluck your pikmins, gather pikmin. Annoying af

The auto lock is a good addition for newcomers but you cannot for the sake of whatever miyamoto smoked, you cannot toggle off any of this babymode features.

I agree that a game should be made and tailored for newcomers and old fans, but give the people who make your game successful a chance to experience this without babymode activated.

Nintendo releasing more crap at 30fps. This should of been a switch 2 60fps game. Too lazy to add a 60fps mode. Got headaches at 30fps? Too bad no game for you! They dont advertise 30fps strains and damages eyesight. If you want 60fps you got to google yuzu emulator.

The game cannot surprise me with amazing new graphics on the old platform, even though it is fun, but after a few hours I got bored, there are no new mechanics compared to the previous parts of the series, in a word, "outdated"!

This game is awful. It’s plain and it’s boring, nothing about this is interesting. All you do is guide your stupid creatures around and collect items. Occasionally fight an easy enemy and that’s it. The gameplay loop is so monotonous. I would never recommend this to anyone if I wanted to be nice.

Pikmin 4 is one of the most overrated games currently. I would not peg it as one of the best not even one bit unfortunately.

I would say it is too easy, too simple, and too childish.

As a giant fan of Pikmin 3, my partner and me were looking forward to Pikmin 4 for months. After finally playing the game it was a giant disappointment for us. The "coop" mode which was the most important feature for us was basically removed.
Adding a stone throw mechanic so they can write "local coop" on the package just feels like getting cheated.
In general a large step backwards

It's a thrilling ride. You go for one short game and wake up after five hours, only to return to playing immediately because you've figured out how to beat your opponent. The graphics may be simple, but they make up for it with the colour and thoughtfulness of the environments, and one genuinely enjoys exploring every nook and cranny. This is really worth it. Pikmin 4 marks the return of one of Nintendo's most beloved series, and this return could not have happened in a better way. Thanks to its exquisite audiovisual world, slick gameplay mechanics, an enveloping strategic component, and the adorable relationship between the player and the little alien creatures, Pikmin 4 is nothing short of a jewel on the crown of the Nintendo Switch.

Too childish, and too little new compared to previous games.
