As a longtime fan of the series (starting with Pikmin 1 on the GameCube), I must say Nintendo has absolutely knocked the ball out of the park with Pikmin 4. In just a few short days, Pikmin 4 has easily skyrocketed to the top of my personal Pikmin game tier list. By carefully extracting the best components of each past mainline Pikmin title and blending it all together, Nintendo has created a masterpiece of an experience that has it all, both for first-time players and longtime fans of the series like myself.

I’ll begin with what this game has to offer for newcomers to the series — namely, that it is the most accessible entry in the franchise. The addition of mechanics such as the time rewind feature (which lets you “rewind” the game a set amount of time in cases where you, for example, lose a lot of Pikmin in a fight, or want to retry to get a certain task done before sunset) is very helpful, and the careful focus to ensuring that all the game’s core mechanics are both adequately explained and demonstrated, with ample opportunity for practice, makes this game the easiest entry of the series for first-time players to jump into. The removal of a Day Limit — which was previously a point of contention that kept potential new players away from the series — shifts the focus of the game away from the central pillar of maximizing time management in 1 & 3 and more towards exploration and adventure. But though the focus is no longer squarely on time management, this does not mean it is entirely gone! Pikmin 4 does still encourage time management (presented in the game by the concept of “Dandori”, a Japanese word describing the art of time management); however, unlike in 1 & 3, one must no longer worry about running out of days and having to start the game from scratch. Rather, Pikmin 4 encourages time management primarily in “battles”, which are self-contained challenges presented to you throughout the game, where you fight against both time itself in some instances and CPU opponents in others. If you fail any of these challenges, the game simply immediately offers you the chance to try it again. And of course, as in past titles, time management is also encouraged by the personal challenge of improving upon your past records. For example, one of the ways I enjoy repeated playthroughs of games in the series is by challenging myself to see how many in-game days I can complete that title in. In Pikmin 1 for example, my current record is 9 Days — and each time I replay the game, I always strive to see if I can bring that number down to 8, or even lower! Pikmin 4 is no exception to this: I’m already looking forward to my next playthrough, to see how many less Days it will take me to 100% the game!

While the game does focus on being as welcoming to newcomers to the series as possible, this does not detract from what this game has to offer for its veteran fans! In addition to the meta challenge of lowering your Days taken to beat the game, there is of course also challenging content to be found in the game itself. Certain enemies and some later caves will see you lose many precious members of your squad. Rewinding time is always an option; but if you don't believe in hitting that Reset button, you are never forced to use the feature: rather, the game may simply suggest it to you as an option at certain times. Getting Platinum medals in Dandori Battles is another challenge one can undertake if you find merely “passing” the challenges to be too easy. In addition, later optional post-game content sees the challenge and difficulty of the game reach — and possibly even exceed — previous series highs. Beyond the game’s difficulty, veteran fans will also be excited by the nods to prior titles. Of course, I won’t spoil what these nods are; but each time I encountered a new reference, I always found myself grinning like an idiot for at least the next few minutes. One last feature of the game I’ll talk about that’s sure to please those who’ve played past games is the return to prominence of all prior Pikmin types. Unlike in Pikmin 3 where the Pikmin types of Pikmin 2 (whites and purples) were relegated to side content, in Pikmin 4, all types are accessible in the main story mode!

There’s so much more I could talk about, but due to the character limit, I’ll leave it there. This game is the culmination of a decade of work, and the sheer quality reflected in every aspect of the game clearly shows that this ample time was put to excellent use. As someone who was admittedly not the biggest fan of Pikmin 3 as compared to 1 & 2, Pikmin 4 is essentially the Pikmin sequel I’ve waited almost my whole life for (for reference, nearly 19 years have passed since I first played Pikmin 2 on the GameCube in 2004!) Pikmin 4, in my opinion, is the absolute peak of the franchise, and I’m unsure how Nintendo can possibly top it in the next game — but even so, I can’t wait to see them try!

Nintendo's current game design philosophy seems to not include the word CHALLENGE. A balanced challenge is not present in any game they make these days including this one. Many players are able to have fun in a game that poses no challenge whatsoever (like the new Paper Mario, the new 3D mario, etc. etc.) but I can't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The level design and gameplay are the best the series has ever been. It takes everything the previous three games did well, and puts them all into one experience, while keeping out almost all those games’ mistakes. It does absolutely everything I wanted it to do and then some. One particularly noteworthy aspect is that every area can be 100% completed with just the Pikmin you either enter the area already having, or will find in that area. No backtracking is ever required, though some puzzles may become easier to solve if you choose to wait and come back with more resources. It’s very satisfying to go to a new area knowing you’ve done everything you possibly can in the previous one.

The game gives us access to all nine primary types of Pikmin in the main campaign, which was great to have after Pikmin 3 chose to omit Purple and White Pikmin. To balance the diversity, and keep things from getting overwhelming, only three types of Pikmin can be chosen to be with you at once. (Though you can get more than that if you find other types while exploring a cave.) This helps to make no Pikmin feel unhelpful, as even if two Pikmin are both capable of completing a specific task, which one will be more useful in other ways will change from are to area, and from cave to cave. For example, both Rock and Purple Pikmin are great in combat. Purples are stronger and can damage multiple enemies at once, but Rocks are immune to being crushed or impaled, making them a safer choice in many cases. But Purples also have the carry strength of 10 Pikmin, but you may opt for them despite their relative vulnerability to help carry back those items after the fight is over.

Oatchi the Space Pup adds a lot of intricacies to the game’s strategy and combat. He functions as a hybrid between Captain and Pikmin, mechanically, having all the same abilities as a captain, but also being able to be directed in battle, and to carry objects back to base. You can upgrade him, just as you can your captain, allowing him to have higher carry and combat strength, as well as increased defense and immunity to hazards, among other things. Not to mention you quickly gain the ability to ride Oatchi, letting you jump up ledges and keep the Pikmin all huddled together on his back. And soon he can swim those Pikmin across water as well. There’s always more than one way to tackle a puzzle or fight thanks to all the options he adds to the table. Deciding the most effective way to do things can be difficult, but satisfying to figure out, thanks to this adorable companion’s help.

The new Glow Pikmin do not live in the onion, and instead a certain amount will enter your inventory after clearing one of the Night Mode levels they are obtained in. This allows you to have them anytime you want underground, without counting them towards your three other choices. They cannot be used above ground or taken out of caves, however. The night mode you get them in is a completely new and kind of terrifying way to play Pikmin, with it mixing Pikmin’s Real Time Strategy Gameplay with the Tower Defense genre. You need to very carefully manage your time to increase your number of Glow Pikmin, while simultaneously keeping enemies away from the objective you are protecting. Luckily, Glow Pikmin are special, and automatically return to the active character when idle, making it very easy to keep track of them as you switch between your captain and Oatchi to try your best to multitask.

The game’s length is staggering, with it having over 1.5x more collectibles than the previous three games had combined. However, unlike Pikmin 2, the game never begins to feel as if it is dragging on. Every single sublevel of every single cave is unique, and human-made rather than randomly generated, so no at no point does the experience grow stale or feel unbalanced / unfair. The game does feature multiples of a lot of its treasures, with only 239 unique ones out of the 410 you can find. But this helps make it even more special when you find something completely new. The same can be said of the enemies, of which many return from previous games, including many fan favorites that haven’t been seen since Pikmin 2 or even as far back as Pikmin 1. And many of the old foes manage to feel just as fresh as the new ones, thanks to improvements in their AI and changes to the way they fight or the way you battle them. For example, the Baldy Long Legs now roams all around the maps it is found on, rather than being contained to a Boss arena.

Nintendo really hit it out of the park with this game. They absolutely delivered to the fans who have waited a decade for this sequel, while also creating an experience that can certainly be enjoyed by new players just as much. It’s a game I will no doubt be returning to over and over again, just as I have with the first three games. Even though it is a significantly longer game than them, it’s still one I will almost definitely never get sick of.

This game has several nods to both 2 & 3 and seems to have combined the best of all the other games! You'll find caves with familiar layouts and enemies, and even in the overworld you'll see old and new enemies alike.

My disappointments lie in the targeting system, as the lock-on function can be frustrating at times. As well as the character customization. I feel as though if they wanted to let us create our own character, they could have given us more options to truly make our character represent us. There is one area in particular I wish we had access to explore more of, but I won't go into detail as to avoid having to mark spoilers. I will say, you'll know when you get there what I mean. (We only got to see half, maybe a quarter of a potentially huge area)
The biggest flaw of this game that we all can agree on is the co-op. It was truly a downgrade from 3's co-op and I'm hoping that, like 3, it will be redone to give us a much better experience. Pebble pitching just isn't a true co-op experience vs being able to control another character like in 3. They could easily have P2 play as Oatchi! We'll see if we get better co-op later on but until then, that is definitely the biggest problem with the game.

Other than that, the game is phenomenal. There's SO much content. I'm 30 hours in and still have some more content left to do, as I'm doing a completionist route.
The visuals are amazing, each area we go to is beautifully made with stunning colors and unique layouts.

If Miyamoto decides to make a 5th installment of the main storyline after this, I would be ecstatic. (And hopefully it wouldn't take 10 years? Haha) There's plenty of room for improvement still, if they did make another game. Pikmin 4 truly gives us everything we could have wanted from the past games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pikmin 4 is the Peak of this series with little Mins. As a first timer to the Pikmin series, it's a pleasant experience. The visuals are stunning, for one. The rewind time feature lets you try your hardest to save everyone, but is only optional. Mastering the art of Dandori through the Challenges, Battles and the Trials of the Sage Leaf is a genuinely fun experience trying to maximise efficiency (if only I could do so irl too) and the Night expeditions provide a decent challenge through the combat. With a whole host of treasures to collect, caves to explore and castaways to rescue, this game keeps you well occupied during Day expeditions, and the risk of whether or not to rush in last minute tasks as the sun goes down is incredulous.
Olimar's Shipwreck Tale is a nice reward for saving Olimar, a fast paced Pikmin 1 style rush to collect 30 Ship parts in 15 days, and the reward of the Trials of the Sage Leaf is worth the while.
The one complaint I have about the Trials of the Sage Leaf is that a day passes when you exit. The challenges are very difficult and truly put your Dandori to the test, not to mention the White and Purple Onions you get as rewards for the Trials (Trial 5 for White, Trial 10 for Purple).
Each and every Pikmin has it's time to shine, the Piklopedia entries are a joy (especially Louie's cooking guide), the treasures are varied and charming it's a blast all around to complete.

There’s so much attention to detail, so much content, and so many prior attributes from past games, especially from 1 and 2. However, what Pikmin 4 does most important of all is that it evolved the series much further than any prior game before it, the maps are so large and with caves, they simply add much more depth to the areas, and unlike Pikmin 2, the maps remain full and satisfying to explore instead of heavily relying on the caves for content. Speaking of caves, they’re so much more polished this time around, the theming of them are so much more interesting and in many cases, they’re just as beautiful as the the overworld maps. Another great thing is that the Pikmin feel a bit more balanced this time around, and the fact that all prior Pikmin are utilized with new ones equally is honestly a dream come true, one of my biggest disappointments with Pikmin 3 is that whites and purples weren’t included in the main story. Another strength of the game is that the charm of PNF-404 (or the Pikmin Planet) is cranked to 11 with the inclusion of more human influence than ever with one area being straight up a house and while it does break the illusion that humanity has been gone for a very long time, I think it adds a new flavor and makes 4 standout against prior entries in terms of aesthetic. Anyway, if you’re still reading this, you can tell I’m trying to be as spoiler free as possible, but let me tell you, as a Pikmin fan, this game feels as monumental of a jump as Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild does for their respective series. I urge anyone interested in the game to try it out as it’s very inviting and difficulty is low at first, however be warned that it ramps up gradually, making its mission to hit you with the craziest stuff at anytime, and as a Pikmin 2 biased fan, I’m very pleased by it. Now that all my praises are out of the way, I’ll finally talk about the stuff that keeps this at a 9/10 instead of a 10 out of 19 for me. Autolock… this is a big one, in prior games you could freely aim where you through and in 3, they added a lock on button to help you aim more precisely which was honestly perfect for those who weren’t the greatest at aiming, however for some reason, the team thought it would be a good idea to have the game automatically lock your pointer with whatever’s around you and while on paper it would seem like it would be a great help for newcomers, it quickly becomes a problem when there’s multiple enemies or an enemy near intractable objects, meaning that if your in the middle of throwing Pikmin at something, one slight movement of your pointer will cause it to jump to a different object, and oddly at the same time it feels like you have to fight the pointer to put at the right object… it’s not the most well thought out thing in my opinion and most of the fans I’ve talked with are on the same boat. I’m hoping that Nintendo fixes this via an update where we could simply switch it off, which is something it we should’ve been able to do from the start. Anyway, there’s much more I wanna talk about, but I don’t wanna spoil hard, I really hope that this game is a great success as it’s very unbelievably deserved, Pikmin remains as my favorite video game series, and Pikmin 4 only puts it even more ahead of the pact for me. Pikmin 4 is the DEFINITIVE Pikmin game. It carries over and builds upon elements from the previous games while also maintaining a sense of consistency in the gameplay. The graphics are also just impressive to put it simply. I now see why they decided to use Unreal Engine 4 for this game. As Unreal has very good asset streaming technology.

This game just blew me away in terms of how fun and joyful the whole experience is. It's wholesome entertainment throughout. You feel complete immersed in the various levels, the gameplay is top notch and the graphics are really good. The gameplay loop is very addictive but it might not be for everyone so definitely worth taking a shot at the demo before you buy.

    Small edit, this game

Small edit, this game is not perfect, no game is, but don't listen to those poor souls who think that praise for this game means you belong to a "nintendo cult" . Some of us are able to enjoy fun gaming experiences such as this one while others are just permanently embittered and sad with their holier-than-thou approach and "reviews".

When compared to past Pikmin games:

    Pros:
    - Improved Visuals
    - Length of playtime
    - Number of treasures to collect
    - A character inventory is something that has really been missing up until now
    - Above-world level design is expansive and fun to explore
    - Moveable bases
    - There is a night mode

    Cons:
    - A step backwards in terms of boss design from Pikmin 3
    - Pikmin limits on the field
    - Oatchi oversimplifies the game and feels unnecesary as he completes tasks that could have easily been done by different pikmin types. It almost feels as though the 3 type limit was introduced just so that Oatchi would have an artificially justified use.
    - Fewer captains means less multitasking capabilities. This effectively leads to less "dandori" in Nintendo's "dandori" game.
    - Classically difficult bosses have been oversimplified to the point where they are mind-numbingly easy to defeat.
    - Lack of creativity in boss designs following Pikmin 3 led to the development team simply reusing bosses from Pikmin 2.
    - When caves were announced to be returning, something along the lines of Pikmin 1's Forest Navel or Pikmin 3's caves was expected. Instead, Nintendo fell back on the archaic Pikmin 2 design philosophy, and while these caves follow their own unique designs, they fail to keep up with the above-world enhanced level design.
    - A lack of real two-player functionality as was seen in Pikmin 3 Deluxe. This feels like a harsh step backwards for a feature that was perfect for the series.
    - Lack of general captain and individual Pikmin animations
    - Way too much dialogue for a Pikmin game
    - Lack of control options and toggles, forcing players to use the autolock feature and limiting overall variability in gameplay
    - First game since Pikmin 1 to not have an expansive Challenge Mode outside of the main story
    - Game is simply too easy and lacks any real challenge for players of the past Pikmin games. It was a common criticism that Pikmin 3 was too easy, but it seems as though there aren't ever any real consequences in Pikmin 4.
    - The night mode feels very "thrown together" and definitely does not live up to its potential
    - No online multiplayer

    Conclusion:
It feels as though Pikmin fans have been so starved for content ever since the famous interview about Pikmin 4 being near completion that they are willing to praise Pikmin 4 for anything good and simply ignore the good aspect of past games that have been removed or glossed over. As a fan, I am very happy that Pikmin 4 has been released and will likely sell well compared to other entries in the series, as it is the first new Pikmin game to be released on a well-selling console. However, it would be ignorant to pretend as though this is a perfect game. As a whole, Pikmin 4 is a good entry, but it sacrifices many of the things that make the other three games great. Hopefully Nintendo can take a little more time in fully fleshing out Pikmin 5 once they gain the confidence in the series that the higher Switch release sales numbers will undoubtedly provide.

This is an amazing Pikmin game, it takes a lot of elements from 2 but makes so many good changes to it:

    - Caves are no longer randomly generated (thank god), this was one of the major problems I had with 2 so I'm really happy they removed that.
    - Caves are now in way shorter but there are way more, this helps make caves feel less boring as there is a lot of variety in caves now.
    - This is also what makes the final cave so impactful, having only around 5 sublevel long caves the entire game makes the big 20 sublevel final cave so memorable.
    - Amazing final boss, I was very afraid when I depleted its health bar the first time that I thought it was over in seconds but the extra phases were a lot of fun, especially the final one (glow pikmin's are very useful on this fight).
    - THERE IS AN ENTIRE PIKMIN 1 STYLE MODE WHERE YOU PLAY AS OLIMAR! This really surprised me and it was a lot of fun, really brings back the 15 day time limit in a fun new way.
    - Completing this side mode unlocks some of the hardest challenges in the game, getting platinum on these 10 missions was a lot of fun but very difficult (story 7 still haunts me).
    - Unlocking the White and Purple onions this way was a nice way of making sure these 2 are hard to get.
    - Night missions are a lot of fun, especially the later ones get kind of tough with you having to balance getting more glow pikmin and killing the really strong monsters like smoky progg which isn't as deadly as in Pikmin 1 but to compensate they just throw multiples at you at once.
    - There are also some really fun rewards from beating all the side missions. After you beat the final boss Louie will also give you some missions, beating all these unlocks a pretty useless but funny piece of equipment as well (it was actually useful once when I was trying to get a platinum medal in one of the stories of the Secret Trial of the Sage Leaf.
    - I really liked the balancing of the Pikmin types, I do think generally Purple's are still a bit too strong but I personally don't mind as they are relatively hard to get (especially if you don't do the secret trial of the sage leaf)
    - I was also a big fan of the new progression system. Having to upgrade your abilities, Oatchi's abilities and the size of your Pikmin was really satisfying.

Even though I love the game I do think there are a couple of things that I dislike:

    - I love that there are a total of 6 levels (the most in the series), none of them come close to looking as stunning or interesting as the levels in Pikmin 3, but they are generally more fun to play in.
    - Pikmin 3 had amazing boss fights which Pikmin 4 didn't have.
    - I personally wasn't the biggest fan of the auto lock on, I personally thought Pikmin 3 Deluxe handled the controls much better, but it wasn't a deal breaker.
    - Oatchi is a bit too powerful sometimes, especially if you upgrade his strenght to 100 (which is really easy to do). This becomes especially powerful once you have the swallow skill unlocked which makes carrying heavy objects a breeze.
    - Can't believe they brought back the doomsday apparatus (isn't actually a big deal in this game because there is a purple onion but still, can't believe they did it)

The visuals are attractive, the controls are responsive and the world is immersive. This definitely makes up for a charming experience that will please and - most of the time - soothe players of all ages. As all Pikmin games, it still manages to feel frantic or eerie at points; that essence remains. The game overflows with collectibles and types of different species, and does an excellent job at returning enemies and introducing new ones. No matter how familiar you are with the Pikmin franchise, this 4th installment finds ways to keep you on track until the very end, even though the first hours might feel overwhelming to veteran players.

    World experience:
The world of Pikmin still coexists with our own in this game, and it seems Mr. Miyamoto and his team wanted to push that narrative further by the new unique over-world regions found in this game. However, at some points some may feel just a bit unoriginal, and I wish we'd have more verticality while exploring. Although, the underworld areas do make up for that sense of world diversity.

    Storytelling:
The narrative follows the same overall narrative as every other Pikmin game, but this time around you get to meet a lot more people that you could ever imagine coming from this license. All of those individuals have character traits that differentiate them. That coupled with the incredible amount of dialogue they have, and the excellent liveliness feelings of the natural regions give an amazingly built world.
Pikmin lore fans will also enjoy this entry thanks to some surprising elements that link up directly with older titles. Some questions are answered, and some new mysteries are brought up for how PNF-404 behaves.

    Difficulty:
For veteran players, the difficulty bar may often feel too low. And there is no reason for Nintendo to not add more difficulity either. This isn't "because it's Pikmin'. Look at Kirby, HAL managed to keep a really good balance there. I'm sure there are many ways to combat this in the Pikmin series.
Caves make up for a satisfying puzzle experience, but even then there is still room for more advanced trickeries that could mush our brains like I wish it did.
Your friendly dog companion also makes the game easier, and by a lot. Some times, it is greatly used as a puzzle element through its jumping ability, but the other traits (that you can upgrade!) often feel like you own a portable swiss knife that will get you through every challenge. In some sparse cases the dog also makes the Pikmin useless. Yikes...
The hardest challenges may come from the few enemies underground that will roll all over your Pikmin and make you return to the surface illico. That is not a bad thing, but I wish I encountered situations that felt as hard as this, with lighter consequences that flatten my family of eighty to death in an instant.

    Gameplay:
The overworld experience is as pleasing as the other entries.
Caves are amazing puzzles, that live up to the ones from Pikmin 2.
Dandori battles can turn really frantic and confusing, but stay very fun. It really is a bummer though that there is no online support for them!!
Dandori challenges is the most satisfaction I got from the puzzle experiences in this game. Thankfully they challenge you to beat your own records after the first completion.
Night expeditions feel way too easy sadly. The Glow Pikmin type is way too overpowered, as they essentially resist to anything except being eaten, and they teleport to you when idle. The main reward is the only reason I keep on doing those missions (aside for the 100% completion), but this reward... won't scale with the difficulty...? The secondary reward can also make the caves way easier too, which could feel overwhelming to greater players least when it already feels too easy.
The gadgets come handy in every game mode they're in. You also don't get all of them that fast (which is good).

    Other few notes:
    - The two-player experience in the main exploration is as useless as Mario Galaxy games. A second player could have controller Oatchi, as you are able to do that on your own.
    - The soundtrack is excellent, and comes with a few notable surprises. Most of it is forgettable but is great for the atmosphere.
    - The high amount of text is very well distributed. The dialogue is only overwhelming at first and treasure/species descriptions are absolute gold. Although at some points the characters feel like they are backseating by reminding you to pluck Pikmins or save the ones in danger
    - The items in your bag are almost useless most of the time. Although I feel like some players will enjoy trying them out and using them to figure out new strategies.

I'm a huge Pikman fan. I played 1 and 2 on the Gamecube, 1 and 2 on the Wii, Pikmin 3 on the Wii U, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Switch. This is easily the worst Pikmin game out of the series.

I'm a huge Pikman fan. I played 1 and 2 on the Gamecube, 1 and 2 on the Wii, Pikmin 3 on the Wii U, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on the Switch. This is easily the worst Pikmin game out of the series.

    1. The controls are overcomplicated and poorly implemented
This game has a lot of buttons that you can press. I found myself fumbling the controls 10 hours into the game still. There's just too many buttons to remember, all of which are extremely contextual. The game stops you from throwing more than the minimum Pikmin required onto objects.

    2. The dog takes too much focus away
There's a progression tree for the dog, and the dog can pretty much do everything the Pikmin can do. Pikmin latch onto the dog, which takes away the feeling of having a mass army trailing you. Some tasks REQUIRE the dog too.

    3. There is a really bad auto-lock on in this game. You can't turn it off.
There's an auto-lock feature that causes your cursor to snap onto enemies and objects. It's really sticky and I couldn't get used to it. Some may find this helpful if they have trouble aiming in games, but it can be really hard to target the enemy you want with the auto-lock. The manual lock-on isn't great as it randomly decides to disengage.

    4. The game constantly backseats you
The characters in this game never shut up. They will constantly backseat you. If you leave a Pikmin unplucked, they will remind you to pluck it every few minutes. If a single Pikmin catches fire, they will tell you to whistle it back. They state the obvious no matter how many hours you've been playing for.

    5. The tutorials drag out for forever
Pikmin 1, 2, and 3 gave you access to Pikmin and the core "Pikmin" experience of growing your army fairly quickly after a minimum of 2 minutes. In this game, it takes about 30 minutes (if you don't skip the dialogue, about 10 minutes if you do) in order for you to get access to an Onion and grow your Pikmin. Even after this, the game constantly interrupts you for another hour with cutscenes telling you what each and everything does.

    6. The game tells you what Pikmin to use
The game recommends what type of Pikmin you should bring. Every area in this game can be completed with the three recommended Pikmin. The dungeons in this game also tell you what Pikmin you should bring, and automatically sets your squad of Pikmin to those types. You can change it after the fact, but there's hardly any ever reason to change your Pikmin up. On top of this, there is a 3 Pikmin type limit that stops you from mixing up your squad in unique ways. There is no strategy or thought to what Pikmin you want to bring out.

    7. The writing in this game is atrocious, and the story is convoluted.
All of the dialogue in this game is completely flat. It's not even memorable or laughable bad. It's just garbage text with no meaning constantly being spewed at the screen. All of the characters are one note. The story retcons the events of Pikmin 1 and so it desperately tries to make the stories of 2 and 3 make sense, but it fails to do that.

    8. The game is too long and has no replayability
The entire game is progression based. Once I put this game down I got sick to my stomach at the thought of having to play the game again and do the progression mechanics all over again. The length of the game actively harms the good of it. To 100% the game's campaign, it takes about 20 hours. Speaking of which...

    9. There is no mission mode
The campaign in this game is more or less the only way to play. You can play the Dandori Battles mode against your friend or against a CPU, but you have to unlock all the maps through the story. Get bent if you want to download this game and play against a friend. Gotta unlock it all first.

    10. The co-op in this game is not true co-op
Player 2 is forced to throw pebbles and items. They don't get to play as a captain.

    11. Too many puzzles
Half the caves in this game are puzzles. Not a whole lot of strategy, just puzzling. Some may enjoy this more, but I didn't.

    12. The music in this game is generic and forgettable
The music in this game is... can I say this? Can I just say it's flat out garbage? Not a single one of the songs stuck with me. Almost all of it is generically whimsical. Any returning tracks are butchered beyond belief and don't fit in the game.

    13. You don't blast off into lower orbit
This is a "returning fans" opinion, but one of the most memorable things about Pikmin was flat-out removed. You instead go off and land somewhere else on the planet. Doesn't ruin the game, but it's still worthwhile to mention, I think.

Character limit stops me from talking about the positives, but the negatives end up outweighing the positives in the end. Pikmin 4 feels less like a strategy game and more like a puzzle adventure game. It feels like it wanted to be mainstream and streamlined too much and so all in all it was a fairly forgettable experience compared to the original trilogy.

    - The overall gameplay is a blast ! Very tactical and dynamic just like previous games but much better !
    - The game is actually pretty long to finish (unlike previous Pikmin games).

The bad : - The tutorial is terrible (way too many cutscenes and dialogues. .. it's very very boring and I actually didn't like the game during the first 2 hours ...). Pikmin has never been about the story but about the gameplay.
I get it they wanted to teach the gameplay to new comers.. but still... it's too long and boring. - The overall difficulty of Pikmin 4 is a disappointment (it's too easy) not challenging enough... thankfully it gets harder by the end of the game and it's still super fun to play etc... but where is the " ultra spicy hard mode " ?? Why don't we unlock a hard mode after finishing the game once ? This kills the replayability to me and to lots of people.
Give the players the choice and let them have fun with different difficulty levels . Pikmin is best when it's super challenging.

Conclusion : Despite " the bad ", I still put 10/10 to Pikmin 4 in order to support this underrated franchise that deserves so much more love ! To top the main story off, there's a great postgame offering. There are a few negatives, albeit small ones (mostly). My only complaints are the limited customization options for the player and the lackluster civilian castaways, but those don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Está increíble el vídeo juego si se nota una gran evolución en las mecánicas nuevas y también una mejora de las ya usadas en anteriores entregas, los paisajes son muy hermosos y diría más pero no quiero arruinar la experiencia.

The best game I have played in years. I would highly reccomend this game to everyone of all ages. Despite its at first childish appearance and nature this game can be enjoyed by anyone.

    Pros:
    -Amazing gameplay / musical / graphical / UI / camera / quality-of-life upgrades
-Series finally hits a sweet spot with collectibles and side quests -Completionist / Perfectionist dream game (replay and rewind abilities) -New casual / action gameplay mode -Tons of new characters -I would die for Otchi - cutest character since Baby Yoda -3 New Pikmin types mix it up a little

-I would die for Otchi - cutest character since Baby Yoda

-The return of dungeons from Pikmin 2
-With the addition of assignable commands you will find a button setup that suits you
-Couch co-op (haven’t played it, but apparently 2P throws rocks)
-Lots of arena style battles sprinkled in
-The Beach level is a work of art
-Retains morbid sense of humor from Pikmin 2

    Cons:
-Constantly skipping cutscenes and dialogue gets old (+ button is your friend)
-Splitting up squad into groups is still slightly trickier than it needs to be, especially with Otchi around
-Your command options change, somewhat confusingly, depending on whether you’re on Otchi or foot
-Otchi is a little OP, nerfs game a tad
-New horde mode is fun but thin, a little undercooked - would like to see this given more love in the future

Wonderful game, best parts of all the Pikmin games in one

Nintendo releasing more crap at 30fps. This should of been a switch 2 60fps game. Too lazy to add a 60fps mode. Got headaches at 30fps? Too bad no game for you! They dont advertise 30fps strains and damages eyesight. If you want 60fps you got to google yuzu emulator.

Pikmin 4 is the most charming (and dare I say the most fun) release of 2023. Stunning hyper realistic terrain, juxtaposed with fun, toy-like character design. An incredible amount of incentive to 100% each available area. And above all else, absolutely addictive gameplay.

Hopefully many more people will finally be able to jump into the Pikmin series with this being the most accessible addition in the franchise. I have nothing but praise to say about this game from relaxing, addicting and all out fun to run around and explore. If you are looking for a new game and have been on the fence about this franchise I highly recommend picking this one up and giving it a try!

I’d say read Natedoinglife’s review for the main points, but this will probably go down as the most underwhelming entry in the Pikmin franchise for me. Very good game for single player. Co-op is a joke, but for how good the game looks, it's understandable that rendering 2 screens would not be possible

Pikmin 4 has probably the best over-world design in the series, but serious mistakes have been made.
    - It’s way Too easy.
    - The few Boses are embarrassingly 1 note, bad AI & a pushover. - Nighttime mode is a pointless add-on. - Caves design is worse than the over world. - Music is either copied or worse than the previous Pikmin games. - Full Item & command wheels is desperately

    - Full Item & command wheels is desperately needed. Instead of the unresponsive awkwardness Nintendo have implemented.
    - Most seriously, Like all of Nintendo’s games the AI is a simplistic joke. But you won’t ever hear Nintendo cultist complaining about that fact…..proving their cultism. I want better games. Cultism want worse games.
    And so many more issues.

Nintendo still hasn’t made an overall good Pikmin game. That it takes over potentially over 5 Pikmin games to finally get the basics right across the board is a joke. I also blame N cultists for this situation.

Still, the basic formula of a Simple tactical & task driven game, still has moderate pleasure to its fundamentals.

This game is a massive love letter to longtime fans of the series - nothing short of a masterpiece. Takes all of the best parts of Pikmin 2 (which was my personal favorite entry in the series) and evolves them further into a succinct and wonderful game that was, in my opinion, well worth the wait.

Graphically, "Pikmin 4" is impressive. The environments are lush and beautifully detailed, effectively portraying the wonder and strangeness of alien worlds through the perspective of these tiny creatures. The soundtrack also deserves praise, with its mix of serene and energetic tunes, which subtly enhance the gaming experience.

I cannot explain how good this game is. From its concept, the its gameplay, to its visuals, everything is amazing. The game is about 20h long and the post game adds over 10h to the experience.

If you have never played a Pikmin game, i highly recommend you to start with Pikmin 4. It is beginner friendly.

It's a thrilling ride. You go for one short game and wake up after five hours, only to return to playing immediately because you've figured out how to beat your opponent. The graphics may be simple, but they make up for it with the colour and thoughtfulness of the environments, and one genuinely enjoys exploring every nook and cranny. This is really worth it. Pikmin 4 marks the return of one of Nintendo's most beloved series, and this return could not have happened in a better way. Thanks to its exquisite audiovisual world, slick gameplay mechanics, an enveloping strategic component, and the adorable relationship between the player and the little alien creatures, Pikmin 4 is nothing short of a jewel on the crown of the Nintendo Switch.
