Pentiment is a fantastic adventure RPG that revels in a studious approach to history and immaculate recreations of the styles and traditions of 16th-century Bavaria. There's a super smart, funny, and engaging murder mystery to investigate here, but it's how that mystery is so fully rooted in the world that's been lovingly crafted around it that really elevates this experience. It's one of the best games of the past decade, hands down, and to have that experience running and performing perfectly on Switch is a joyous thing — it feels like it was made for Nintendo's console. This is about as essential as games get.

It turns out Pentiment, just like good cheese (ask Josh Sawyer about this) and wine, only gets better with age. Not only do I think it is a magnificent experience from start to finish like it was back on Steam Deck, but it has found a new home on Nintendo Switch delivering the full experience with gorgeous visuals on the OLED screen. If you skipped it before, now is the time to rectify your error and play one of the greats. Hopefully Obsidian can add touchscreen support in an update because that’s literally the only thing I’d like to see added in this port.

A unique and beguiling historical murder mystery that this scribe can't recommended enough.

Pentiment stands as a testament to originality and meticulous attention in gaming. It faithfully recreates the Renaissance era, and the weight of your decisions significantly impacts the entire narrative, making it a game that everyone should experience. Kudos to Microsoft for enabling a wider audience to engage with the artistry it offers.

Obsidian’s medieval murder mystery Pentiment is a small but incredibly dense narrative with little gameplay but heaps of some of the most exquisitely crafted dialogue in all of gaming. It’s more captivating than it is exciting, and it may appeal more to readers rather than gamers. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and already know its writing will stick with me far longer than most bigger, more technically impressive games.

Available now on Nintendo Switch, it provides an accessible yet profound storytelling experience that evolves over 25 years, offering diverse choices and thought-provoking scenarios. With its captivating narrative and engaging gameplay, Pentiment stands as a must-play title, now reaching a wider audience beyond its initial release.

Obsidian's Pentiment is not for everyone, but this RPG does offer a fascinating look at the religious and political unrest of the early sixteenth century. A variety of backgrounds and a time limit that doesn't allow you to pursue every plot thread in one playthrough, it also offers good replayability. Unfortunately, it also somewhat overstays its welcome when the last hours repeat a lot of what you already know. The Switch port isn't flawless, but will suit you just fine if this is your platform of choice.
