Paper Dolls Original isn’t the scariest horror game, but it’s a solid attempt from a restricted studio and it does have some charm.

The setting and atmosphere, as well as the idea to situate the whole game in a small, interconnected space, are wonderful and lend well to the developers’ overall vision. That being said, the core gameplay loops hold the experience back, and while I loved the Eastern spiritualism theming, there was a lack of emotional weight to the stories of both the protagonist and the ghosts themselves. This is a game which gets me hoping that there is something like it, but better, out there in the future.

There’s nothing wrong with trying to emulate another game’s success, as long as it’s done effectively. Paper Dolls Original borrows every horror trope under the sun, but fails to implement them in any meaningful way. It’s painfully boring, and considering its price is comparable to other, more accomplished horror games on the eShop, you’d be best off leaving this ghost in its mansion.

    Paper Dolls: Original
    Absolutely terrifying
Paper Dolls is a 2 hour long first person horror game where you play a dad searching for his daughter in a haunted house.
You can play this game both in its original form as well as with PSVR,
Paper Dools is very puzzle based, it’s a lot of search this area for as many items as you can and then figure out what to do with them, much like a point and click adventure game.. except you can pretty easily put two and two together…
The entire game takes place on one floor of this house, so naturally that means as the game goes on, solutions to different puzzles will be in a room all the way over there..
Youll be completing puzzles and getting keys to unlock new rooms inching towards saving your daughter.
At first that’s no big deal, sure the house is spooky and you get scared here and there… but you have a flashlight.. what could possibly go wrong…
how bout some ghosts haunting the house that instakill you if they catch you.
This is what makes paper dolls so terrifying, the constant stalking while youre trying to explore and collect…
worse is this game doesn’t autosave. If you make any bit of progress, its up to you to run back to the save room and save without getting caught on the way back..
There are desks and closets for you to do that.
The story here left me pretty unsatisfied though, it sequal bates but at the end I feel like I deserved more for what I just put my heart through which really hurst my overall opinion of this game.. it doesn’t quite feel complete…
Theres a way to sequal bait without letting a game feel unfinished.. and this isn’t it…
otherwise this is a great horror game that will keep you looking over your shoulder.
    I give Paper Dolls: Original
    a 7/10
