Feeling more like a remaster than a true remake, this game feels extremely old fashioned. The aiming system is poor, and the 360-degree gameplay flat-out badly handled. This game needed to be reimagined, not just ported with better graphics. A disappointing, overpriced and unimaginative effort.

I'm giving this game an 8. Really, this is a 10/10 game, but it's marred by some major issues, mainly in handheld mode, which could potentially be patched out.
This is a remake of the original Saturn game, which was, for it's time, one of the greatest games ever made. Unfortunately the original ran at 20 frames per second and had huge amounts of pop-in. Graphics were about half-way between Star Fox on the SNES and a PS1 game. But for an old Saturn game, it was definitely impressive. Luckily the remake is here to fix the technical issues and modernize the graphics. Unfortunately there are times when the game performs terribly in handheld mode, though frame-rate seems fine in docked mode. This is at its worst in episode 4 which oddly enough, takes place indoors where you would think you would get a more stable frame-rate. It seems like the game may have been rushed to get it out while people are staying indoors due to the pandemic and need games to play. The upside is the game appears to be running at a high resolution, it does look like a 1080p game in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode, though it could also be using good anti-aliasing, upscaling, or other trickery. We'll have to wait for digital foundry to analyze the game to know for sure. However, there is no excuse for frame-rate problems like this in handheld mode when that's how the bulk of people play Switch games. Let's hope this can be patched out.
Another problem is the poor controls with joy-cons. Since most people use the Switch as a handheld this is a serious problem. I tried playing it with the best gamepad ever, the Game Cube controller, and it was night and day difference. Unfortunately this leads to my next complaint, you can't remap controls. And unfortunately, in this game you fire with the "b" button, when you would want the the large "a" button to be the fire button on a Game Cube controller. Why the mother****ing f*** do game developers, in ****ing 2020, not ****ing give you the ****ing option to remap ****ing controls? Especially when the Switch is compatible with the NES, SNES, and Game Cube controllers, both wireless re-releases and vintage ones with the proper adatpers, and one of the primary appeals of Nintendo consoles is their gamepads. It's so frustrating that I can't use a vintage NES controller with certain retro-style indie games that would be perfect for it, if they just gave you the option to remap controls. FFS, if a Sega employee by some miracle reads this review, please patch this in. Another gripe is that you can't change the sensitivity of the analog stick without going back to the main menu, and I can't recall a single game that does this. Since the game controls so poorly on the joy-cons, I had to restart several times to get the sensitivity right
The best way to play the game is definitely docked mode with something other than the joy-cons as a controller. But it's disappointing when a Switch game has a poor handheld experience. As of right now, this is a Switch exclusive, so it's not as big of a loss if you're forced to play in docked mode to not get a sub-par experience, but frustrating nonetheless.
A minor gripe is that the game is pretty short. Hard mode is tough, but you're probably only looking at 10 hours of total play in this game before you beat it in hard mode, based what the GameFaqs ratings are saying. There was no very hard mode in the original, and maybe they added it to this game, but I doubt it. Still, this is kind of giving you an AAA experience for $25, so I can't complain that much about the length.
Also, what's with the load times? At least you won't see the loading screen that much.
As it is, this is an amazing game, a great update of the Saturn classic It also throws in a new dual-analog control scheme which would make some bosses easier, but I couldn't get the hang of them(maybe later I'll try to learn them). And really, this is a great experience in docked mode with a gamepad. If that's how you mainly plan to play then you don't have much to worry about. The game also looks much better on an HD TV. Unfortunately, if you're like me and almost exclusively play in handheld mode, then you're going to have an inferior experience. I guess I could give docked mode a 10, but since I mainly played in handheld mode, I'm going to rate it based on that. Apparently gyro aiming is coming, which could maybe solve the handheld controls. And if the frame-rate is stable in docked mode, it could probably be made stable in handheld mode with a couple of patches. At the moment though, you'll want to play this game exclusively on the big screen if possible.

As someone who has played and beaten every Sega Saturn Panzer Dragoon game (Orta you’re on my list, don’t worry) I believe I have something of an authority on the quality of this game. This breaks my soul in half to say, but besides the impeccable visuals, this game is a downgrade in almost every way possible. Let’s start with the positives, the game looks fantastic. Almost every region will blow you away with its distinct style and intense detail. You may even find yourself fiddling around with the photo mode which allows you to put the controller down and appreciate how much went into this game artistically. The developers somehow managed to keep the charming (albeit alienating to modern day players) cutscene style that was so distinct to the Sega Saturn original with its confusing gravity and trademark stiffness. I found this charming and sincere, and I’m probably the only one. Now, time for the bad. The music is definitely all the tracks you remember, albeit it less charming and more run of the mill. The controls are slow, and there is noticeable lag in the hit detection and camera movements. The aiming reticle even feels like it’s struggling to lock on to enemies and when it does you hear a pathetic sound effect that sounds like a memory of a translation of what used to be the Panzer Dragoon sound effect. For some reason, some one up the ladder decided to chang the gun the rider wields (all non lock-on shots) from a multi shot to a single shot, and with unreliable controls it just turns into a button mashing fest. Load times are unreasonably long, although to be fair it was downloaded to my micro-sd rather than the switch itself. Even though the original only ran at 20 frames a second, it still managed to convey speed properly, your lock-ons were instantaneous, your dragon moved across the screen swiftly, AND IT WAS STILL DIFFICULT. I tried to bust this review out as quickly as I could so that people have an idea of what to expect. I looked everywhere for reviews on this game to see if I was crazy and I found no voices speaking out. Hopefully that adds some weight to mine. I’m giving this game a 5 (which for me is quite low) because although it failed my expectations to give me 7 satisfying levels due to fighting with the controller the whole time- I do believe we are only a couple of patches away from this game being at least decent. I do truly believe that Nintendo it rushed out as there is no pc version available yet and the Corona Virus has given Nintendo’s online store quite a platform; However, this is just a (game) theory. I do have hope that patches can fix many of the issues keeping it from being an exceptional remake, and I hope all of these issues are ironed out when we get its sequel remade- which is arguably the best in the series. If nothing else, hopefully this put Panzer Dragoon on the map, and shows Sega that we fans through word of mouth do grow, and that we do still hold a candle- especially when our memories of it shine so very brightly. Negatives: - Here we go.
The controls are laggy and very jarring. Enemies end up between quadrants and rather than just panning from side to front.. it actually won't let you.
Aiming and shooting is more annoying and fiddly than enjoyable.
The sound effects should have been the original.. especially the dragon screams. Those noises from the dragon are iconic for the game.
The graphics, while updated are missing that gritty organic look so iconic with the originals. It all looks a touch cartoon-like and often it cheapens the feel of the game. The main character's face is a bit weird also.
I finished in about an hour and 15 minutes. No issue with that as I've beaten the original but there are no extras once you finish the game. Nothing I could see at least. No Pandra's Box. I feel no compulsion to return to the game as the controls made it so cumbersome to play.. so for me - $37.50 AUD seems like a very steep price to pay for a game that has nothing else to offer.

Immediately from opening cinematic, it seems familiar, but "off". It's like a bunch of game devs that don't understand why people love games. The cinematic, has okay music, but the sfx are TERRIBLE. Just shockingly bad. The whole cinematic is too up tempo, tranistions into other scenes weirdly and animations and set pieces are all wrong. Spider creature moves in a way that makes it seem like it's injured rather than intimidating. your weapon is supposed feel weak, but spider reacts to your weapon yoo much... WHAT?!? It's supposed to make you feel small and weak, and your weapon makes it reel back? WHY?!? VO is too low. Frankly this is the high point of the game.

Get into gameplay now. Huge loadtimes for some unknown reason. Reticle is terrible. Lock-On is haphazard, like a tiny reticle to lock on from, and the reticle is no longer 3D like it used to be, so it's hard to tell where your dead center lock-on is, because it's obscured by the rest of the reticle. this is not how the saturn version functioned at all. Single rapid fire is too slow. You used to be able to rapid fire an attack, but now it's forced pacing shot. Which makes it useless most of the time. No more having decisions between lock on or single fire. Heavy target in front of you and you want to unload with rapid fire? not even worth it.

Your Dragon bounces around CONSTANTLY. Literally bounces. Makes it near impossible to determine position to dodge. Second boss for instance, good luck figuring out where you are and how to dodge. It's not even hard, just annoying.

Enemies are too colorful and so is the environments. No more shadows or severely reduced. Making them impossible to see in many instances. Radar is no help, because the radar makes no sense. Distance and position are off. Enemies that seem right in front of you are considered too far to lock on to, but are close on the radar. Enemies that are in front of you are actually under you. I think the radar is based on speed scale. So if you are flying slow or stationary, the radar has some kind of zoom, but it's not clear.

Enemy hitboxes. The lock on reticle is so small and annoying, it's really difficult to get multi target locks. You are constantly struggling with the controls to line it up, and you MUST use lock-on, because its the only way to find hitboxes at all. They changed the looks but not the hitboxes, so you will fire on a wing, but not at the exact pixels they want, but there is no visual feedback. It's a complete mess. Also, the targeting is as annoying with single rapid fire. So it's a huge hassel to figure out how to shoot. Shot em ups are my thing, this feels like a bad remake on Dreams (PS4).

The SFX are the worst. Dragon Growls, to fired shots, to that annoying ambient sound when you are holding the lock on. it's terrible. Get to the end of a level, and you'll see how bad it is. Audio is badly mastered. SFXs cut of abruptly and jarringly, like someone made 10sfx in a single wave file and badly edited them apart. Truly shocking how amateur hour this feels.

Bosses: in original, some felt grindy. Here it feels haphazard, barely feels like your doing damage, cause you can't target or find hit boxes properly. Giant ship, you get 1 or 2 lock-ons as you pass. When you should be getting up to 8. So it feels broken, but they must know this in playtesting, because as you fumble barely being able to find a hitbox, it suddenly dies... What? I remember unloading on turrets of first boss to try and do pure damage, or get as many lock-ons across all the targets. Now, it feels terrible, but they know the balance sucks, and just make the bosses die anyway.

How others here are giving it 10s, i don't know. Do you let nostalgia rule you? did you just want to get in with high scores cause fanboyism? I LOVE Panzer Dragoon, and this ain't it. This is a pale comparison. Even the music is not as good. The only good things about this game, are the things they were able to lift directly from the original. Some of the musical score is 80% as good as the original, and based on how good that is, that's good. But it's pathetic here. Because it's squandering epic content to make meh content. I don't even have a sense of the music while in levels. Used to be quiet moments where enemies build up, and feels like an echo. All contributing to overall sense of flight. Here, it's too dark, too much color that the enemies are pretty much invisible before they jump on you (i'm talking docked mode on large HD display, don't get me started on undocked. It's unplayable)

Honestly, how do you mess this up this bad?

Maybe wait to see what they can fix in patches. It just feels frustrating to play.

This a good remake, it remind me of the old Arcade games, where you have to "earn" the continues.
My only complain are the gyro controls, they are mapped very linear with the movement instead of being more fluid and accelerate when moving the controller faster, it;'s not like a Splatoon 2 experience.
This is a shame because it's really hard to use the "modern" mode of controllers with a bad gyro experience, "Classic" mode of the controllers is quite good, so It's the default way to play, but I feel this is a missing opportunity, I would like to move the dragon to avoid damage with the sticks and use the gyro for aiming.
I got my version from Limited Run games, the physical release comes with a nice manual with comments of the original game and nice art box with a cover that has art on both sides.

A lot of potential destroyed by so many flaws on design.
Do not buy even on sale, buy a better space shooter, like galaga tbh.

Following a major update in which most problems were resolved, this game is much better than many pre June 2020 reviews suggest. Still a bit expensive for a remake of a very short 25 year old game but if you enjoy games like starlink then you will enjoy this.

From the very beginning with the opening cinematic, it’s clear the small crew over at MegaPixel Studios are certainly Panzer fans like myself, putting a lot of time and effort into making this as familiar as possible, the recreated opening cinematic runs in sync with the original version on Saturn, just with far much more detail.

Graphically, the game obviously looks far better, even on Switch the game runs with nary any framerate issues to speak of. That being said, MegaPixel may have bitten off more than they can chew, with this being one of the first games they have ever released besides the Switch ports of Agony and Grave Keeper, with the character animations feeling a little stiff in places.

But it’s not all bad news, the game still utilizes the old arcade feel with credits, but you can thankfully resume your progress if you decide to leave after several levels. Plus, the remake introduces the best upgrade for the game, dual stick aiming and being able to fire and turn using the shoulder buttons, so aiming is an absolute breeze and plays more like Sin and Punishment then Starfox, but this can be a real double edged sword, the original controls were horse **** even with the 3D Control Pad, it could be a real struggle getting past even Episode 4. But with these new controls, I was able to breeze through the entire game in almost a day.

Aiming can have a learning curve for other people though, I found that the three spinning squares used as a targeting reticule could prove disorientation to where you are actually aiming, but the game seems to allow you to lockon to an almost infinite amount of enemies on screen, so just wiggle the reticle around and hope for the best at first, and in just the latest adjustment, it seems you have fair more energy compared to the original.

Despite the ups and downs I’m still going to support this game, hell I’m gonna shell out for the Limited Run physical release. Why? Because I want more, I bloody love Panzer Dragoon, more specifically the 3rd Iteration in Panzer Dragoon Saga. That game alone justified the purchase of a Saturn……and a modchip because holy **** have you seen the prices online. However, while it is certainly in vogue right now to get RPG’s from the Mid 90’s remade in glorious HD, I wouldn’t want Saga in the hands of such an untested studio like MegaPixel, recreating an on rails shooter like Panzer Dragoon and Zwei is one thing, but Saga is a multi hour adventure spanning four discs and unlike a similar game released at the same time on Playstation, barely anyone played it legitimately. Which is sad as it truly is one of the most uncovered Gems in Sega’s history. There has been suggestion that Yukio Futatsugi, the man behind the series wants to tackle a Saga Remake himself, and expand upon the original with a much larger world to explore, and all I can say is, Yes, Yes to ALL that please.

But back to Panzer Dragoon on Nintendo Switch, if you are a fan of the original then you really can’t go wrong, it is everything you loved about the original back in 1995, with a really really shiny new coat

Es una gran adaptacion del clasico de Sega. Se echa en falta mas modos de juego y estar un poco mas pulido pero tiene toda la esencia del original.

It takes between 150-200 seconds to load each (short) level! This makes the game practically unplayable! This is unacceptable! Avoid!

"Despite offering little replay incentive for this short game, Panzer Dragoon Remake achieves what it set out to do perfectly: remake a classic game for modern consoles.

When Panzer Dragoon was originally announced, I was pretty interested in this game. Being a fan of other similar on-rails shooters such as Space Harrier, Star Fox and Panorama Cotton, I figured I would give the game a shot, and livestream it to some friends. What followed was a pretty disastrous display of disappointment.

I feel that a long explanation is unnecessary. While I did find the visuals to be fine, everything else just didn't sit right with me. Sadly, the area that felt least enjoyable to me was the gameplay, which in a game where all that you're doing is gameplay, is a pretty big error. Needless to say I won't be excited to replay this any time soon.

I first played Panzer Dragoon: Remake after it received a significant post-launch patch that resolved many issues critics had with it. Therefore, I didn't experience many of the same problems as launch-day players. With that in mind, I did enjoy this sci-fi / fantasy rail shooter quite a bit, though I can see why its appeal is somewhat limited.

Honestly, if you never played the original, or have no nostalgia for similar games like Star Fox, you probably won't get a lot out of PD:R. It's short, not too difficult, and its visual style isn't going to win any beauty contests. If you're an older gamer like me, you're the target audience and you might get a kick out of it.

At a cheaper price this could be recommended for a quick Sunday afternoon stroll, especially for anyone nostalgic of the original title. A nifty touch would have been to include the original game as an unlockable, which would at least help sweeten the fact that this can be completed within an hour or two. Despite its abundant and underwhelming flaws, Panzer Dragoon: Remake is still a piece of gaming history that deserves to be played, and shooting down waves of enemies does still prove to be satisfying.

Panzer Dragoon: Remake won’t be for everyone. I never played the original game, but I have a basic knowledge of the franchise. It looked familiar to a personal favourite of mine, Star Fox, but unfortunately, Panzer Dragoon was nowhere near as enjoyable. It simply lacks a lot of the fun touches and personality that make the Star Fox franchise so good. Panzer Dragoon does have some fun moments and some of the visuals are quite impressive. I didn’t care much for the story and the game is quite short. If you were a fan of the original, nostalgia alone might be enough to make the purchase. It’s worth noting that a remake of the sequel is already in development, so if you do enjoy Panzer Dragoon: Remake, you’ll have something more to look forward to.
