■A different way to level up!
Kisejima, where the game takes place, is divided into three areas with a variety of challenges ranging from fighting enemies to escort missions. The player can also level up by running away from pursuing monsters, like a game of tag, and collecting mushrooms that grow in clusters to purchase upgraded clubs.

Oni: Road to be the Mightiest Oni is a stunning adventure that offers a fresh twist on a classic story. Though the Switch version’s performance suffers some stutters, the unique combat, great range of challenges, and truly emotive narrative ensure that the touching tale of Kuuta and Kazemaru will stay with you for a long time.

ONI: Road to Be the Mightiest Oni is a messy, yet clearly heartfelt, experience. There is a lot that’s worthwhile here, between the gorgeous visuals, interesting mechanics, and superb storytelling, you just have to wade through a lot of samey content to get to it all. Might be best experienced in short bursts.

ONI: Road to be the Mightiest Oni’s gameplay and structure perfectly suit portable play, which makes the Switch version’s current state even more disappointing. Right now, I’d recommend it on another platform assuming those versions run better. This adventure game has a lot of soul and potential, but it is held back by a lackluster Switch port. The aesthetic does look great on the OLED screen, but everything else holds it back from being an easy recommendation.
