The idea behind Vlambeer's Nuclear Throne is simple: it's a post-apocalyptic roguelike-like top-down shooter. Not 'the final hope of humanity' post-apocalyptic, but 'humanity is extinct and weird mutants and terrifying monsters now roam the world' post-apocalyptic.

All you need to do is take control of one of those mutants and shoot the things trying to kill you. Use simple weaponry like quintuple-barreled bazookas, super plasma cannons or exquisite cursed laser miniguns. Or the game might just hand you a screwdriver. Deal with it.

Mutate some new limbs and abilities as you go, and become the ultimate Throne hunter. Find secret vaults with game-changing crowns, discover rare overpowered weaponry, or compete in the worldwide Daily and Weekly challenges. All these things and more you could do if only you were good at this game. Can you reach the Nuclear Throne?

The difficulty is absolutely harsh and is sure to turn some off, but feels completely fair, outside of the rare fake chest which can quickly destroy an otherwise promising run. However, no matter how frustrating a death can be, I constantly found myself right back into it without a second thought.

A perfectly constructed neo-arcade game from genre master Vlambeer, which perfectly marries twin-stick shooters with roguelike punishment.

Nuclear Throne is an absolute blast whether you’re kicking off your very first handful of runs or attempting your hundredth. The action is intense, the pace rapid and the difficulty tough but rewarding. We may be spoilt for choice when it comes to indie gems but Nuclear Throne is one you shouldn’t pass up on.

Challenging and addictive, prepare to die countless times and restart that same number of times plus one. Because you always want to try your luck again in the fight for the throne.

Nuclear Throne proves to be an enjoyable and devilishly challenging roguelike shooter that no fans of the genre will want to miss out on, even if it does tend to become more frustrating if you add in a second player. Though the visuals and music are rather disappointing, the core gameplay of Nuclear Throne more than makes up for any deficiencies through its variety and feedback loops; it’s the kind of game that’s so easy to jump into, you just can’t refuse having ‘one more go’. If you’re a fan of Enter the Gungeon, roguelikes, or difficult games in general, Nuclear Throne is going to be right up your alley; we’d give this one a high recommendation.

Down to yourThe best thing about Nuclear Throne is that you'll always feel like you can still make it, no matter how bad the situation gets. Down to your last hitpoint, surrounded by tons of enemies and bullets flying everywhere? Keep running and gunning (or stabbing or swinging), and there's always a chance you'll turn everything around with that next health or weapon drop.
While it does not have the polish of Enter the Gungeon, it has a certain rawness, speed and absurdity which Gungeon is lacking. Also noteworthy is the sound design, with every gun packing a lot of punch, and enemies and ambient sound effects all being crafted for (apparently) maximum absurdity and fun. Biggest downside is that it actually gets harder in coop because you'll keep losing your character in the frenzy. Great game!

Though it lacks some of the polish found in competitors like Isaac and Gungeon, Throne stands out as the fastest, most mechanically tight and satisfying. Vlambeer's booming sound design, simple but effective controls and screen shake make shooting and dodging enemy fire satisfying, a game-feel goal that few manage to stand up to. The ludicrous guns and the varied characters to be played, as well as a slew of mutations and build styles keep the runs fresh every time. One of the best ports to be found on the switch and well worth your time and money. Expand
