A perfectly constructed neo-arcade game from genre master Vlambeer, which perfectly marries twin-stick shooters with roguelike punishment.

Challenging and addictive, prepare to die countless times and restart that same number of times plus one. Because you always want to try your luck again in the fight for the throne.

Nuclear Throne is an absolute blast whether you’re kicking off your very first handful of runs or attempting your hundredth. The action is intense, the pace rapid and the difficulty tough but rewarding. We may be spoilt for choice when it comes to indie gems but Nuclear Throne is one you shouldn’t pass up on.

Nuclear Throne proves to be an enjoyable and devilishly challenging roguelike shooter that no fans of the genre will want to miss out on, even if it does tend to become more frustrating if you add in a second player. Though the visuals and music are rather disappointing, the core gameplay of Nuclear Throne more than makes up for any deficiencies through its variety and feedback loops; it’s the kind of game that’s so easy to jump into, you just can’t refuse having ‘one more go’. If you’re a fan of Enter the Gungeon, roguelikes, or difficult games in general, Nuclear Throne is going to be right up your alley; we’d give this one a high recommendation.

The difficulty is absolutely harsh and is sure to turn some off, but feels completely fair, outside of the rare fake chest which can quickly destroy an otherwise promising run. However, no matter how frustrating a death can be, I constantly found myself right back into it without a second thought.

Though it lacks some of the polish found in competitors like Isaac and Gungeon, Throne stands out as the fastest, most mechanically tight and satisfying. Vlambeer's booming sound design, simple but effective controls and screen shake make shooting and dodging enemy fire satisfying, a game-feel goal that few manage to stand up to. The ludicrous guns and the varied characters to be played, as well as a slew of mutations and build styles keep the runs fresh every time. One of the best ports to be found on the switch and well worth your time and money. Full Review »
