Potential is there and the music and lore are fantastic or even epic at times. The Rock Paper Scissors mechanics are a bit hit and miss but that’s kind of the charm of the game. It’s Mario Party inspired scoring system at the end of a match needs work though. I love the game and hope they keep evolving it further.

This game is free to play which is understandable but at the same time the microtransactions are really bad and hinder the full enjoyment of the game but not too much and this is an early review and my opinion and review may change as time progresses with this. This is also only the review for the free to play portion and does not include the story mode.

The gameplay is pretty decent. I did ten matches and made top three 4 times first place twice and 7th place was my lowest ranking in the battle royale matches. Simple gameplay with two modes being team mode and battle royale. The battle royale which is an eight man slap fight is pretty fun and chaotic and unlike most br games you don't have a single life but instead you are fighting to get points by doing damage, stylish kills, defeating bots, etc. Team battle is your typical four vs four that goes by the same point concept.

You have a choice of three weapon types being sword, hammer, and yoyo weapons each weapon types having four weapons each for a total of twelve weapons you can use each with their own abilities and skills to add diversity to your setup. You also have ninja cards which add special perks like lifesteal, enemy detect, start with max S meter, etc.

The flow of combat, you have your light combo attack, then you have your heavy attack that launches enemies in which after you can press the light attack to pursue your target to flow up with more combos. You have a dodge and the one thing they add to this game is a parry which is a rock paper scissor type thing in which you press a direction and hope you can slap your enemy away but at the same time other enemies cannot attack you during this lock up but instead get blown away and lightly stunned. You also have skills you can use depending on the weapon you have a (Y) button ability and a bubble juitsu combination you can do by holding the (ZL) trigger followed by the attack button and it varies depending on the weapon you are using or an air boost by holding same trigger and pressing the jump button while mid air. You also have an S meter that you can expand by destroying apple like robots and when you expand it to a certain amount you can hold (ZL) then press (A) to increase the size of your weapon allowing for longer range to your attacks. And you can also press (A) to hide in the environment by disguising yourself as a nearby object which can lead to funny moments and tactical ambushes. But my only gripe with the combat is the lockon camera is pretty jank and if you are trying to lock onto a weaker target in a group fight you will lock onto the nearest person sometimes or even one of the apple bots.

But the thing that bogs this game down badly is the microtransactions for cosmetics. Yes this is a free game and they need some way to make money but putting all the clothing behind a fortnite esque cash shop and only requiring cash is slimy. And you can get cosmetic skins for all the weapons as well but you only get them through two methods. One being finishing matches and leveling up where you get a weapon skin and the other being the gatcha machine they have in the cash shop that requires either cash currency or 300 gold medals that you only get from winning matches. But the worst part of these weapon skins is the fact that they are consumable and once you use a skin for the match you cant use it again until you get lucky enough to get another one and there are a lot of skins for weapons so the chance of getting your favorite skin again is rare as heck and more than likely you will not use the skin at all. It does not matter if cosmetics does not affect the performance of a player in a game but when you have a game that promotes Splatoon like fashion, its really scummy when you have no way to look unique unless you pony up the real life money or buy the season pass and instead be dressed like everyone else but just have a different face, hairstyle, and hair color.

With limited stages, the games graphics look really nice, and have that Splatoon vibe but you are limited to two areas at the moment of writing this one being a rooftop arena where the battle royale quick play takes place and the city which is a maze of buildings and bridges and looks pretty cool.

The music is really nice where you can choose a track that plays every match by equipping it from the appearance menu and you get new tracks by leveling up or getting it from the season pass and cash shop.

The game is decent at best but the microtransactions can turn a lot of people away and hopefully we can get clothing and other things through leveling up more in the game and they give us other options of getting things in the future as they add more to the game.

If you read this large wall of text thank you for the time. I will still be playing this game from time to time and change the review and maybe the score as I play more and make new discoveries.

It's both of those things, made better. Ninjala is a game that handles the control schemes similar to a beat 'em up, with each and every weapon having unique skill kit sets and unique attack animations for each one. The gameplay is very fast paced and well executed, with a few lag hiccups here or there. I really love how they used a rock paper scissors mechanic for battling against an opponent who is blocking, as something like that has not been done before in any other game I played. Sure it's a bit unbalanced currently, but the game recently came out so there would possibly be implemented patches introduced later as the season goes on.

I mostly see the complaints of this game being that "the premium currency is worth too much" and "the singleplayer should be free". First off, the currency is worth the same amount as it is in Fortnite, and secondly, the singleplayer is optional and way cheaper than the singleplayer campaign in Fortnite.

Most players also complain that the gacha system for the game is unfair and expensive. 100 Jala is easily obtainable through leveling tiers and spending 100 Jala on 10 pulls of the gacha is remarkably cheap compared to most free games that have a gacha system. I personally find the motif quite enjoyable as you can obtain new gum from this system, and it's like pulling a gumball out of a gumball machine.

Lastly, the game was only released four to five days ago upon writing this review and I am super excited to see new developments from this game. It's fun, engaging and especially fun to play with friends who can't afford games like Splatoon 2, Smash Bros or Mario Kart. I recommend downloading this game if you just want something new in the Battle Royale genre that isn't a third/first person shooter.

For some reason the game was unveiled two whole years ago at 2018's E3, & weirdly overhyped even for back then. The game's online is mostly stable, occasionally giving an error code very similar to the abysmal demo GungHo ran briefly before the official release. The menus are also very confusing when you first start and the tutorial offer lots of information, but it doesn't take the time or effort to show you how to do all that stuff, so the new player introduction will most likely be terrible as it was for me. On a more positive note though, this game looks amazing and I really enjoy the different combos, weapon skills and variety. The rock paper scissors party system is also a lot of fun to play with. I just wish there were more environments which allowed people to battle on walls and hide more effectively. Hopefully they add more maps asap because 2 is absolutely unacceptable, even in a f2p game of this nature. Expand

I've seen a lot of people say that it seems like people win based on luck more than skill because it's not clear what's going on (like what attack your opponent is doing) and it feels unbalanced. I don't see this game having a great competitive scene in the future just because the combat feels so imprecise when compared to something like Splatoon, and it doesn't seem like there's a high skill ceiling. Second, what is even the point of weapon skins if they go away after a game? Also why can't I join a friend's Battle Royale lobby online? There are just little things that irk me about this game, and I'm not a huge fan of the characters or busy UI so I'll probably pass on this. Gameplay wise, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, it feels as though your inputs are ignored sometimes, don’t get me started on the Perry system, it’s god awful, even more annoying, when you get hit don’t expect to find a way out because your pretty much done at that point. When playing online in teams sometimes you can start the match with less players then the opposing team (Which seems fair) it’s a 2 Vs. 4 match, spoiler alert! You’re not going to win, no matter how hard you try.

The game also does a poor job matching you with players online in ranked matches, which you compete for a points to increase your Rank. The awards given to players through out the game are.. border line useless, most of them amount to being cosmetic, changing the appearance of your character, or weapon, doing a flashy animation when you Win or Lose, some stickers to show off when you get a kill, and that’s about it, all that for a hefty price of 9.99 a month.

Don’t even think about trying to earn the in game currency without paying, it’s simply not going to happen, as soon as you look at the Member Tier awards Vs. the Non-Memeber awards, you’ll see why.

It’s a good free to play game if your not looking to get to competitive with it, but if you are, good luck. The physics are clunky, sometimes it just feels as though you don’t even have a fighting chance, a god awful Perry system, all the game really has to offer is graphics and a decent sounding soundtrack.

At first, the combat seems random and chaotic, but once you get the hang of the mechanics it becomes quite deep. Accumulating the highest score is the name of the game. Smashing robots, collecting gum, and eliminating foes will increase your score. The more stylish your elimination, the higher your score reward will be. These styled eliminations are called "Ippons". You use "gum" as your main resource, dictating when you can dash or block to avoid oncoming attacks. Gum is collected overtime or by gathering orbs placed around the map. Destroying apple-shaped robots increases your maximum gum reservoir. Collecting enough gum will allow you to craft a larger weapon, giving access to enhanced abilities. These abilities differ between weapons, and can also be tweaked via equipable "Shinobi" cards. The customization is an obvious focal point, from costumes and hairstyles, to soundtracks and weaponry. This is a free to play game, so the usual paid currency and battle pass format is utilized here. There is however a mobile-like gatcha mechanic at play in the form of a Gumball machine, allowing the user to spend in-game or paid currency to access new customization options. The available content at launch is limited, for example, there are only two maps and two game modes (not including the paid dlc story mode). Battle Royale is a 8 player free-for-all, and Team Battle, a 4v4 mode, both available in ranked/unranked formats. This is fine for now, as the gameplay loop is enjoyable, but I expect this to be expanded upon with future updates. All in all, a very solid base. If you're a fan of the Splatoon franchise, or fun focused PvP, there is something here for you. If the updates hit regularly, this could be a Switch staple. Expand

The actual problem that led me to rate this a 6 is the gameplay: I've been playing from day 1, and what I've immediately noticed is that the battle mechanics is more about luck than it is about skill. The parry system is based on a rock-paper-scissor stand-off that can be easily frustrating, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you never feel like victory was earned or that defeat was fair.

I reached as far as level 20 without really enjoying the game, so Imma go back to my Splatoon.

More than the simple Splatoon rip-off the art style would trick you into thinking it was at first glance, and not just because it replaces the squid people and ink with ninjas and bubblegum. This free-to-play multiplayer title favors melee combat over shooting, which is a style of gameplay that's always struggled in the online space. While there have been minor success stories like For Honor, for the most part hack 'n slash action has never translated over to the competitive gaming scene very well at all. Not even when big series like God of War or Ninja Gaiden tried their hands at it.

That's because it's hard to capture the same fluidity of mechanics and gameplay one would find in a single-player campaign when faced with the erratic nature of a real life opponent, and the various necessary systems proving tough to balance for similar reasons. Ninjala fares better than most, suffering more in the former category than the latter. The combat is stiff and clunky with your movements feeling somewhat slow. Your gum-based powers do a little bit to spice things up, particularly the ones that give you increased mobility, but while competent fighting is nowhere near as fast-paced or exciting as it should be. The real problem though is it's rock-paper-scissors parry system as it literally comes down to luck over skill, which is a huge no-no when it comes to multiplayer. As with anything it can still be pretty satisfying to score a knockout or win a match despite all this, but not enough so that I wasn't left wanting more from the experience overall.

Also leaving something to be desired is the amount of content. With only 6 maps, two main modes, and limited time offerings (none of which I've participated in being any fun) to give you three options of play in total there are obviously some longevity issues. What's here is fine for quick, infrequent sessions, but the game could really use some non-cosmetic expansions. Something the developers have really been slacking on given that this has been out for a little over a year now.

They have been good at least at updating the store with plenty of costumes and skins. I really enjoyed the character customization aspect. You have a wonderful degree of control when it comes to creating your avatar's appearance. Mix that in with the wealth of outfits available to purchase with in-game currency and you're truly able to give your ninja a distinct look.

It's this sort of thing that would make you think Ninjala has more personality than it actually does. It's lively, energetic visuals hint at some world-building going on behind-the-scenes, which ultimately isn't actually the case. There is a story mode, but it's locked behind a paywall of $10 a pop for each chapter and to this date the devs have still only released two. That's kind of a letdown because, again, this is over a year old at this point and without things like characters or significant plot developments to latch onto the unique, eye-catching theme really just ends up being nothing more than hollow window dressing that isn't reaching its potential.

With its non-existent price tag and a mien similar to that of other Nintendo favorites, Ninjala is certainly an attractive prospect when browsing the eShop. The game is only serviceable at best however. It could use some more attention from its creators in the form of more match types and some smoothing out of its rather rigid feeling combat. Because right now, without the support, its most appealing qualities are that you never feel the need to put down any real money on clothing or the seasonal battle pass, and that, for free, it does offer a passable (yet lacking) competitive gameplay experience.

It has a lot of flaws though. there is only two maps right now, of which one is really small and kind of unsuited for the game. There are 12 different types of weapons, each weapon has different attacks and features. The problem with this game, especially in the early game is that people dont play it correctly. New players haven't learned its combat system yet. you have multiple attacks.. ZR, ZL and ZR, R, Y and X. in the early game people basically only use their ZR attack. You will do the same as a beginner. When people use the same attack against each other they have to play this kind of rock-paper-scissors type game. Where it feels like basically luck if you press the right direction. This is encouraged by the map WNA academy. That map is very small, which leads to people attacking each other all the time. When you constantly attack people, you dont have time to recharge attacks and actually think about what you want to do. The point of Ninjala is to make points, make points by destroying drones and killing enemies. The gameplay almost completely changes when you play on the other map. The other map is really big and more encourages people to destroy drones and level up their weapon before attacking anyone. even if you can see other people they will be relatively far away, giving you time to think about what you can and want to do. I have played this game for 15 hours now and the more you play it and level up, especially if you play ranked mode, the more fun and skill based it becomes.

a few things you might want to know is everything you can buy is only a cosmetic thing. no pay to win here.
Weapon skins are called "gum" here, so they get used up after each time. if you have one... orange and black skin, you play with it, then its gone. Which is not that big of a deal because 1. they are called gum. you dont chew gum and then spit it out and rebuild it into its original state.. 2. you get loads of new gum after every match, even if you lose you get new things.

They desperately need to add new maps to the game though, which i am confident that they will do that as we have already seen a lot of cosmetic items come out.

The game developers are also very unsubtle in trying to squeeze out every microtransaction penny out its consumers pockets, with incredibly expensive cosmetics and extremely limited rng dependent gacha style rewards.

An otherwise interesting and genuinely fun, if shallow game, that is hampered by the worst aspects of modern f2p gaming. Its still very early in the games life however, so maybe things are subject to change.

However, the big issue is that gameplay fell completely flat for me. I'm sure that Pro players will be able to make sense of this mess but as a more casual player it is absolute chaos where winning or loosing feels like pure luck. It was immediatly unfun and unexciting and didn't get any better for me.
I was also surprised how strongly they leaned into the child-like aesthetic. To me it seems like this is clearly targeted towards really little kids. But at the same time the game is really complex which will propably be overwhelming for most kids. Something like Mario, Yoshi or Kirby seems more age appropriate from a difficulty standpoint.
As it stands I can at most see this game attracting a very niche audience that actually masters the game mechanics whereas many kids will propably try it out, experience complete chaos and soon give up in favor of other games.

When I finally got to play the game the day after I found myself relying on chance a lot. The game advertises itself as a game of skill but the entire time I felt like all I was doing was failing random defense checks. The defense system feels like I'm playing a game of rock, paper, scissors. I didn't see any subtitles for the menus on the menu screen so when I first started playing I couldn't exactly tell what each option did. Otherwise the graphics look nice, there's a lot of selection for player customization and weapon customization, and even though the controls are completely unconventional, I got the hang of it pretty quick.

    TL-DR:
It's not worth the space on your switch. It has a few redeeming qualities but not enough to classify as a passable game. Which is why I suggest waiting until they update the server, account security, and the user interface.

Where the game doesnt succeed, in for me, is the combat parry system. Rock, paper, scissors really shouldn't be a viable way to decide the outcome of a brawl, it really boils down to luck than anything else. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if you weren't stuck in parries most of the time or that if you fail a parry you can't do anything other than wait to be killed as you are locked into the enemies attack with no way to get out. I feel that the game could be a lot more fun if this mechanic was reworked to be more skill-based than luck-based. Aspects of combat that I did enjoy was using your gum shoot to engage with an enemy and properly timing your ultimate moves to land multiple ippons.

Another thing I'm pretty disappointed in is the fact that weapon skins are consumables... I'm not too sure why that was decided by the dev team as you pay real-life money for Jala (special currency) to spend on the gumball machine (loot boxes) which can give you rare weapon skins. These skins are really well designed and detailed. I managed to get a few rare skins using the free 100 Jala given at launch but I'm hesitant to use them as they will used up and gone forever if I use them in battle. I don't see the point in spending money on items I can't keep (except clothing items which you keep forever). This sucks big time and I sincerely hope the dev team changes this.

The game launched with two multiplayer maps... this doesn't feel like enough to chew on. I think it would have been wise to launch with at least 5 maps so players don't get bored quickly with the current rotation. I presume more maps are to come in future.

I've yet to buy and play the single-player campaign so I can't say much on that part but as of the free online multiplayer, these were my thoughts. I hope the dev team in the future consider these points and make changes accordingly. Once these things are fixed I genuinely think this game will be a lot more fun to play!

But for a real review the game is quite fun, the combat is described by many reviewers as “chaotic” which is far from it, you need to manage “S-energy”, magic or mana in other games, pick a weapon that fits your style of play, use your jutsus creatively and strategically, create good combos of shinobi cards(like perks from the cod series), and finally the parry mechanic which is more of a Rock Paper Scissors style dual where, yes there’s a lot of chance, but there is strategy to RPS, ie most people use rock so what do you use(?). The game is great for quick matches to jump in and out of especially as someone who has a very flexible work environment I can see myself picking up my switch for a few rounds during break. Oh and on a final good note it’s not pay to win at all I had the same chances of winning when I had not put any money into it compared to after getting the pass. The only issue I have with the game is lack of content but I can see that being easily fixed if the developers see interest in the game, already they’ve given all players a amount of 500 in game currency for free, since it’s got its millionth download. One main complaint i see is the dubbed "parry system" which is a rock-paper-scissors type system seen in some fighting games. many think this system is not good and kills the game, however other strategies are put into the game to combat the system. In some cases, you can get out of a parry by dashing out if one doesn't think luck is on their side and try to get a potential weapon break to get a free ippon. in other cases, some can play for the passive route by destroying bots to then get a BIG weapon to increase the odds of the parry system from 33% to 66% of winning. Many people may not know about these techniques, but once they are used by the player i believe they will start to understand the game more and implement more strategies into their gameplay. the overall aesthetic and feel of the game is quite nice, but i think there is more room of improvement in the feeling of the game and potential lag. Some of the functions such as the story mode are locked behind a $5 pay wall, however the main game offers much content for PvP and even a ranked system. This game has a great chance to grow if the right routes are taken. Expand

Maybe I've been too harsh on this game, though they really should advertise their mechanics more, unless this is their way of separating casuals from higher tier gamers who look up this stuff.

Another battle royale game. There is a battle pass just like Fortnite and PUBG. Unfortunatly like the other games there is no incentive to get it. The customization of the game is just very bland. All the characters blend in. The gameplay itself is very simple and the game has very little strategic elements to it. Most of the launch bugs have been fixed. The one big problem though is that the game doesn’t register hits and sometimes doesn’t register kill but plays the sound affects.

The game is fun, but I think it is necessary to give more content to the players, add more game modes, new clothing

I think this game is a perfect example of a free online game made for both adults and kids alike. I'm a dad and I enjoy this game a lot. I've tried to get my kids into it, but I think they need to be a little older to understand the mechanics and gameplay, but from what I've played I think it's a solid entry into the switch online gaming sector. This game has its ups and downs, making it an alright game. Much has improved since 2020, but there's still plenty of questionable bugs and features that need to be fixed. I don't want to waste much time here, so have a pros and cons list:

Pros: -Unique weapons -AMAZING soundtrack -Good supplement of events -Good collabs -Cool cosmetics and a wide range of character customization

-Gung-ho makes some questionable choices with what to do with the game
-Matches take at least 2-5 minutes to get into before they start
    -Servers aren't that great
-You'll most likely encounter 1 bug per match

It's a decent game, I suggest picking it up if you're bored :)

There's not doubt that chasing the 'Ippon Master' bonus is where the most fun is to be had. [Issue#348, p.98]

One of the best arena fighters available for Switch. Vibrant battles, colorful arenas and unique weapons are its best features. A very good free to play attempt by GungHo Online Entertainment.

Ninjala definitely has the look of something I should be in love with. It's bright and colorful, and the world-building happening here is genuinely fun. What's not fun are the poorly implemented mechanics that can ruin the fast and fluid combat. There is a solid template for something great here, and if GungHo can iron out all its wrinkles, it might have a genuine blockbuster on its hands.
