My Girlfriend is a Mermaid?! goes along the visual novel conventions but doesn't dare to try anything groundbreaking or that would allow it to stand out among its peers. As such, the game features good examples of character animation and soundtrack but its humour gets repetitive too quickly and the protagonists are not as attractive as fans of visual novels would expect them to be.

I’ve been a fan of visual novels for 10+ years. This particular visual novel is a slapstick comedy, or at least it tries real hard to be. ItI’ve been a fan of visual novels for 10+ years. This particular visual novel is a slapstick comedy, or at least it tries real hard to be. It uses the same gag over and over all the way through the entire game. Just an endless loop of the mermaid getting embarrassed and then whacking the main character with her tail, causing him to pass out and wake up later. You get tired of the gag in the first 10 minutes, because it happens that much. It’s hard to believe someone even took the time to translate this into English. It’s utter garbage. No sweet moments, no heartstrings tugged or any other type of feelings will be triggered while reading this. I was really looking forward to this game, so I am not happy at all to be writing a review like this. Expand
