Having just finished it I can safely say this is one of the most interesting games of 2021. The art style is unique and the focus on swiss folklore. It's really like nothing I've played before.

In terms of gameplay there was a lot to enjoy. The puzzles aren't too challenging but add some variety and save points are quite common so dying doesn't feel like a big setback. The ability to upgrade characteristics like aim and resistance to fear was a nice touch. I did over time come to fear some of the in game enemies as well which was nice. It wasn't an overly scary game but it's certainly a gripping one.

I found there were some really interesting choices presented which affect the ending in pretty important ways. There are also some great setpieces throughout and a couple of incredibly effective jumpscares.

My only real criticisms would be that it's a little short and the loading screens (which are pretty infrequent) can be long. All in all it's definitely worth picking up if you appreciate horror or just want something different.

Sono rimasto molto impressionato da questo gioco. Lo stile, i mostri, la scrittura e il senso di esplorazione sono molto unici e legati bene tra loro. Molto bello, un gioco che mi ha colpito e che è sicuramente stato fatto con passione! Expand

Walking simulators that have horror elements are a bit of a mess on the Switch and while Mundaun has a far more interesting art style and general feel than many of the lesser examples of the genre on the system that isn’t to say it doesn’t have issues. The great hand-drawn black-and-white aesthetic fits the pretty empty and bleak space you’ll find yourself in, though the barrenness of the environments doesn’t always feel so stylistic as just lacking in detail. If you’re looking for jump scares and thrills you’ll also want to steer clear as this relies more on tension and a growing sense of dread than pop scares, so just be sure to have an idea of what to realistically expect in terms of play. The exploration and puzzles can be a bit obtuse and leave you meandering about wondering what to do next at times but on the whole the experience is surely a unique one, and that at least has some merit.

The Mundaun experience on Nintendo Switch was very pleasant and the portable option seems to me the best to play this adventure. It's a great indie game to consider.

Overall, Mundaun is a very worthwhile horror title, even if it may be a little rough around the edges in some areas. The compelling story mixed with the game’s unique aesthetic is enough to create a memorable experience that fans of spooky things are sure to enjoy. That being said, I’m not entirely sure I can recommend the Switch be your vehicle to explore the town of Mundaun. The short render distance and constant shadow pop-in can be very distracting and does detract from the game’s atmosphere; a brief period with the game’s PC release seemed to indicate that these issues are unique to the Switch. If you’re really dead set for a portable version of Mundaun, the rest of the game is still very good tech issues aside, but I would recommend looking into other platforms if those seem like something that would bother you.

Hurt only by the Switch's take on its visuals, Mundaun delivers above and beyond its appearances and offers a robust, constantly compelling adventure game. It isn't particularly scary, but it is rich in atmosphere and hosts plenty of gameplay variety and good ideas. We found that it never compromised its tone or fell foul of any gameplay glitches, although as mentioned the visuals aren't quite up to snuff. It's a minor thing, though, as Mundaun should keep your attention from beginning to, well, one or more of its multiple endings.
