Moonshades drops you into its world and expects you to know what's going on, which is fine. Dungeon crawling is fun, combat can be as well. But Moonshades is being held back due to its controls and use of screen space, an unfortunate product of its mobile phone origins. Controls are confusing, and half the screen is taken up by spells and menu buttons. If you can work through the issues there is a fun dungeon crawler to play. Moonshades doesn't shine bright—it's more like a low glow from a campfire left unattended.

You know if you're the target market for it or not just by looking at it. If you are, then aside from some cumbersome controls and a generally generic approach to the genre, Moonshades is a perfectly decent effort that will scratch an itch. If you're a more peripheral fan of the 'crawler, or new to it all, I'd recommend something like Operencia or Hyakki Castle first. Both of those titles are far more vivid and creative efforts. Without a long history in 'crawlers yourself, unfortunately, Moonshades will likely be befuddling.

IBeing old enough to have played Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2. I was interested in this game when it appeared on the eShop. I was hoping to see a couple of reviews on YouTube or Nintendo review sites but at time of writing this none have reviewed the game. So I decided to take a punt and buy it. I’m glad I did. I know this is a port of a mobile phone game but it’s done really well especially as it’s a solo developer. Initially the controls take a bit of getting used to on handheld but after the tutorial dungeon it becomes second nature. Graphics are very nice modern paying homage to the retro games that has influenced the development. The monster animations are very smooth and their movements are great. I have only played a a few hours of game time and it went in a flash. I am looking forward to getting more involved in this game as there is some in-depth strategy in terms of skill paths and abilities. I hope more Switch owners buy this game and support this developer as it is clear that this game is a labour of love for him and he is wanting to continue with extra content. Anyone who played Dungeon Master, the Eye of the Beholder series or like old school dungeon crawling then this game is a definite buy. Message to the developer if he reads this: Excellent work and I hope people buy your game. Full Review »
