Very nice game, the combat is interesting and can be quite challeging if you face stronger monsters,

In my experience the story wasn't the main aspect beacuse I was more interested in the monster and the exploration, but i did think it was nice.

If you like to capture monsters and spend some time battling to get itens and XP, I think this game is a wonderful experience, really enjoyed it.

I've seen Monster Hunter Stories 2 described as many things including "a game for people that hate Monster Hunter". There's much I could say on the falsehood of statements like that and really does smack of MH players hating on an RPG twist to the Monster Hunter series. There's much I could say on the falsehood of statements like that and really does smack of MH players hating on an RPG twist to the Monster Hunter series. This is an RPG style game, if you don't like that move along back to Monster Hunter Rise. For everyone else MHS2 from the very start is reminisce of FF10's Besaid and Kilika.

Combat is described as "rock, paper, scissors" by some but that isn't even scratching the surface of the combat mechanic the "rock, paper, scissors" alludes to just the "Attack" command, essentially you have 3 types of attacks to use against enemies rather than just mindlessly spamming an "Attack" command. There are many other abilities too, including duo, and "tag team" type moves you can do, switching weapons during battle, etc. If you have ever played Final Fantasy 10 you'll be very familiar with the style of combat in this game.

There are a decent number of weapons and armour you can craft, buy, and upgrade including bows, swords, hammers, etc. The story isn't close to the level of a game like FF10, but I wouldn't call it terrible either what hurts the game and story the most is the silent protagonist approach.

Graphically the game is in keeping and fitting for an RPG and anyone complaining about the graphics or art choice clearly have never played an RPG, I'd dare say it's just more MH fans getting salty over a different take on the MH series for reasons that completely allude me.

I'm extremely sensitive to bad frame rates also being a PC gamer where I play at 144FPS minimum but with the time I have spent with MHS2 so far as of the latest patch I haven't experienced any major slowdown the game feels like a solid 30FPS most of the time with maybe an occasional dip to 28.

In closing, the just over 6/10 user rating very unfairly reflects Monster Hunter Stories 2. Is it the best RPG in the world? No. Is it the worst? No, there is plenty that can be improved in small but significant ways for MHS3. It is however a very solid RPG that's enjoyable enough and worthy for any RPG fan to at least try which is easy to do with the demo available on the Nintendo eShop.

As I said, I like the gameplay mechanic. It's basically turn based JRPG, no problem at all with simple mechanic of rock-paper-scissors.

Previously, I only commented on performance and how wasted the stable feature as you can't nurture your monsters as they have provided you with an asset of the small version of each monster in the game. But, since I'm able to fully play the game now, there are just too many flaws and problem with this game that keeps me hating it even more as I progress through the game.

Performance still becoming the main issue of the unpleasant experience. The graphic is not even that high or even the texturing in the game. Everything seems basically soft and flat but the game unable to properly running at a stable frame-rate. Weirdly enough, everything runs smooth on Lulucion where Lulucion seems to be filled with lot of people other than the other 3 previous village. Work on that MHS team, MHR could run flawlessly so it just unacceptable for MHS to be running like a crap.

Graphic is the 2nd biggest flaw. I truly never value game based on it's graphics as I keep thinking that good graphics is just a bonus and it won't heavily impact my experience but it's different with MHS2. It's not because of the soft texture or low resolution but the graphics of the game is not consistent. It seems they have 2 separate art direction characteristics for human and environment. It's make the art direction (?) of MHS seems not consistent and that hurts my eyes. Once again, it's not because of texture or low resolution, its all about consistency and they are not consistent with how they approach it in art perspective.

Last is of course the story and Navirou. It's better to just remove the story altogether as they can't make an engaging story. You know what? You can make a good story by just working on the lore of the monster itself that has been built in MH series and I believe that will be a lot better than creating a cheesy anime kind of story. Navirou is way too chatty and our characters is just like an NPC. I hate how the closure of Kuan Village's Arc, our characters seems stupid and weak all of sudden and because of that creating a small destruction of Kuan Village. And you better remove Navirou in the next installment, if you plan on continue to work on this series, that cat is useless and annoying. So many of my action got obstructed of his dialogue, so I need to mash the button to make sure my button input is being inserted to the system as well as skipping his dialogue.

So many things gone wrong in this game but those 3 points above completely makes me stop to play the game anymore after 18+ hours into the game. Shame, because the gameplay mechanic is absolutely addictive and engaging. Well, the AI of your companion is sucks thou.

Boy oh boy, where do I begin with this dumpster fire of a mess. I suppose I should mention, I played the first game, and loved it. This one here is well, pretty bad. Definitely better than some other games, but let me break it down.

    Battle System

    Both good and bad.

Good in which, it is much more expanded on. Bad in which the rock, paper, scissors system become very predictable for quite a range of monsters. Higher ranking monsters gets two to three attacks a turn, that you cannot defend against in most cases. It is even worse in the players favor in this game, since only the Kinship ability can bypass this system, and it leaves them completely vulnerable for a turn. More or less, it is safer to play without it. This ultimately defeating the point of building up the gauge. Previous game, I never had to play support, this game? I was forced into it. Terrible design.

    Weapons

    Good and Bad.

Sword and Shield has more relevance than Great Sword, which makes little sense damage wise. Bows are also one of the better ones to use, due to the many hits, and turn end attacks. Hammers and Gun Lance I never found a use for. They were pretty useless. This game makes weapons even worse than the last one.

    Exploration

This is probably one of the better points, but it also has its bad as well. If I am not wrong, it should roughly be around the same as the last game, if not slightly more. Anyway, it is more open to exploring, so that is good. It is also bad how flying is so limited, even more so than the previous one. The dens are larger, so that is good, and it does give incentive to explore it.

    Storyline

Now to this one, there are characters from the previous game. With a certain Felyne jumping back and forth between knowing some characters. At some points, it seems like he genuinely doesn’t know, at other points he suddenly does. I should also mention, this character is very annoying throughout the entire game. Unlike the first, when he grew on the player, and became quite likable from middle to end.

The plot of the game is everywhere, they introduce a lot of side stories, which if memory serves. Almost none of them gets finished. A Rathalos that is supposed to bring about ruin, great plot right? Well, it looks like they had a decent idea for evolution of his Kinship skill as the plot went along. However, they decided to be cheap, and simply used the one from the first game. Anyway, enough of that.

This game was pretty much just go here and there, the characters weren’t given any much time to be properly liked. The main character just felt there, and did not have much relevance. The first game, the main character was important. It was more heartfelt, and the effort can be seen. This game? Well, they had ideas, but none gets properly executed, because a certain Felyne constantly breaks the mood. Every time something thought provoking, or interesting happens, his annoying voice, and stupid remarks breaks the immersion.

All of this eventually lead’s to a final showdown, that didn’t even felt earned, and didn’t bring about a rise in emotions. There wasn’t even any sort of real turmoil to say, it was like a bunch of ideas just thrown together.

    Animations

Animations were excellent, however, if I was brain dead, then maybe I would have been focusing on this. While a lot of effort was put into this, it seems like they were hoping these graphics will be enough to distract from the poorly constructed story/timeline. I get the feeling this is probably supposed to be a standalone, at the same time? They keep bringing up points that made me think it wasn’t supposed to be.

Honestly, the only reason I am giving this a 4/10, is because I played the first game. For a $60 game, this was borderline trash. Perhaps someone can find enjoyment in this, but I went in with high expectations from the last game, and was met with disappointment. I just wanted to play the game to get it over with, honestly, this might be the last time I buy anything from this company as well. Unless they manage to really pull themself up, I don’t want anything to do with their games. I honestly felt ripped off for the price they were going for. I should also mention there are performance issues with the game, such as lag, or delayed movements.

Plenty of content in main story and lots of side quests albeit the side quests are more like kill this and that. This is the sort of game that pokemon sword and shield should have been like.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A superb game limited by factors both in and out of its control. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a beautiful game graphically, there are tons of unique areas that all look amazing. The monsters and characters look great, and there are a ton of both. Every monster has an amazing ultimate attack that are all unique and stunning, as well as tons of unique animations and phenomenally designed armor and weapons that can be made from them. Despite all this beauty, the game, on switch, suffers in the frame rate department. This is weirdly limited to the first few areas of the game and becomes less of an issue later on. The art style is perfect for this game and works amazingly. The music is great too. The gameplay works great, the combat systems work well, every weapon feels unique and accurate to the original series, which is impressive for turn based combat. The excellent combat cycle stays fresh for the whole game, which is important for a 40+ hour rpg. There is also great post game options. This is Monster Hunter Stories, and the writing of the story is overall pretty great. The main plot works well, and is primarily carried by it's characters in a great adventure. This game excels in it's characters. Every section of the game has a different companion, and almost all of them work uniquely. They are designed great, their AI acts accordingly to their personalities, and a subtle detail I like is that the Riders' monsties all have unique names. Kyle specifically is amazingly written, his actions at every point in the story make complete sense with who he is, and he works as a great companion to the protagonist. My two main complaints with the story involve two central characters- Navirou and the protagonist. Put simply, the protagonist should not be a self insert silent protagonist. As much as I love the visual customization, the protagonist has set values, beliefs, bonds, decisions, and goals. The game is focused on the relationship between the player and Ratha, but the player may not feel incredible kinship to Ratha even if the protagonist clearly does. They are not a self insert and thus should not be limited as if they are one. Navirou singlehandedly makes this game significantly worse. He, and his voice, are incredibly annoying, he makes poor decisions, provides childish "comedy", and takes the seriousness out of many beautiful scenes. Worst of all, it is incredibly annoying how he already knows almost EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER YOU MEET. This game is about a journey across an unknown world, having an annoying cat introduce you to every character because the cat met them in the first game completely ruins that sense of discovery. The protagonist isn't meeting new people and forging bonds, they're just following some weird electric creature they met in the woods that already knows everything. Some characters like Cheval and Avinia clearly received good characterization and development in the first game, but we don't get to see any of it. Cheval works great as a foil to the beliefs of the protagonist but because he already received his arc unbeknownst to the player, we don't actually get that. Too much is relied on from the first game, and while it may be good fanservice for old fans, the fact that many companions are from the first game reflects negatively for new players, likely a majority of the audience. It would take a decent bit of reworking, but removing Navirou from this game would improve the game significantly. He isn't even that essential to the plot. All that aside, I do very much love the game. The 9/10 instead of 10/10 is because of Navirou and the framerate at the start. Some small things I love include: Full Voice Acting, Amazing Character Customization , just phenomenal designs on everything, deep combat system, tons of side quests and side content, online play, the egg and gene system, the sheer amount of monsters, the sprawling cities and environments, YOU CAN FLY ON RATHA THATS AWESOME, difficulty is good, cool random things in combat like breath battles, accuracy to the original series- even random encounters feel like bosses, crafting and gathering system and a perfect vibe of adventure (cat aside). I don't like the micro transactions, there are too many and like the paid hair doesn't work with head armor making it objectively worse than the default stuff.

    TLDR: Great game, punt navirou

Not only they force you to keep ratha all the way to the end of the story, but the riding actions are so restrict that you also probably will have room for maybe 3 monsties you really enjoy (that probably will end up swapping anyway, doing to the star system).
Another negative regarding the riding actions is that they seem really clancky, sometimes I have to press 20 times the b button to nargacuga turn stealth on.
The areas feel like they aren't connected at all, and the map system you use to teleport just sucks. I wish they gave us a normal map too look the caravans.
A huge problem of this game is the repetitiveness. The way you progress the story is really repetitive. The way you farm for genes is really repetitive. The dens areas are really repetitive, and what is worse, sometimes the normal map areas look really close to the den ones.
I avoided many battles, but even so there was a point were I got bored, because they tend to be really easy (even with low star monsties) and really long (especially if you are using your favorite monsties). The animations are great, but you'll eventually skip all. One thing that makes the battles slower than they needed to be are the mini cutscenes for changing weapon and things like that. Also, there's a "animation lag" between each move, each hit and etc.
The story is nice, but also feels like some moments don't conect really well together, probably because of the way they change your partners, and the repetitiveness of this formula.
Not having how to change your monsties element or even just colour is just really dumb.
Don't fool yourself if somebody says it's a loveletter to MH fans, there is barely a ok quantity of addition to the mostie rooster compared to stories 1.
There are still many great things about this game, in production value it deserves a better score, but in real enjoyment, this is what I can give.

The gameplay loop captures that classic MH feel while mechanically being much different. And the post-game is tons of fun. While you can't play through the story with a friend you can play most of the post-game grind with one and it's tons of fun.

Also, if you've made it this far into the review, the YouTubers really make it sound like the real game starts in high rank. And I'll say, if you just really like grinding for grindings sake or you really want to get into PvP they're right. But high rank happens after the story, so if you're here for a narrative driven experience just take your time and do what you want in low rank.

Capcom acknowledges the issue on their site.

Very cute spin on the MH franchise that adds a lot onto what was brought to the table by its predecessor. Combat is simple on the surface but more complex underneath and makes for a very fun spin on the turn-based formula. For this reason alone I strongly recommend the PC version instead. Expand

Monster Hunter is a series I’ve been trying to get into for years but has never fully clicked with me, so naturally I was skeptical of an RPG style MH game because of my previous experiences with the series. Up until the demo I wasn’t sold, but when MHS2 sunk its claws into me it never let go for WEEKS. Up until the demo I wasn’t sold, but when MHS2 sunk its claws into me it never let go for WEEKS. I was convinced to bring my Switch with me on vacation JUST to play it at the hotel at night because of how addicted I was. Let’s start with the positives, I really love the majority of these monster designs & it helped that I was familiar with a lot of them already from watching playthroughs of Monster Hunter World & it’s DLC. But everytime I entered a new area I would spend hours finding all of the new monsters to hatch and fight, yeah a lot more are re-skins than I personally would like them to be, but Capcom are experts at post-game DLC so I’m sure the roster will only diversify and grow over the next year even more. The usual hook of the MH series, farming resources from monsters to make better gear, is also simplified as you only need a certain amount of parts to add up to the required total instead of certain pieces, I love this addition so much even though the game is very generous with resources & it’s simple to get any pieces you need quickly with the instant finish feature once you get a high enough level. The areas can be generic (beach area, ice area, volcano area) but they’re all great to look at even if the Switch is a weak console. Speaking of, the framerate should’ve been capped, who’s decision was that? I wish I had a PC to play this game on but.. the performance can be really shaky. It does hold up surprisingly well on handheld mode though, at times it runs better than docked mode too lol, but Nintendo is known to progress 3 generations behind the competition. The story is pretty decent, it had me invested enough to care and at times had me glued to the screen, but nothing to rewrite the JRPG genre about. And aside from some difficulty spikes in the last quarter (mostly the last 4-5 hours of the story), the game is pretty breezy and as long as you pay attention nothing is much trouble, which makes the sudden difficulty spikes all the more annoying. Something else I want to complain about is the multiplayer. I haven’t played a lot of it yet since I just finished the game, but from what I have played I’m not impressed. Also how the hell are people level 99 already? The game is barely a month old! To each their own but.. makes me feel like I suck at the game when I know I don’t lol. I haven’t been disconnected yet but just like with Pokémon Sword & Shield’s god awful multiplayer UI, this repeats a lot of the same mistakes. Only a handful of players come up at a time, many of which will be joined by other players before you finish reading them, so you’ll have to exit the multiplayer menu and go back in over and over if you want to see a new page of people. Why the hell are most expeditions only available if you have a pass for them? You have to go back through the same cave structures over and over to farm bottle caps to buy more passes, which you may not even get anything good from. Speaking of, so many of the dens are reused over and over AND OVER again to the point that it’s tedious to travel through the same cave with a different coat of paint for the 150th time. I’m not sure if they’re procedurally generated but damn, step it up. I also don’t care for games that instantly throw you into the deep end right after you finish the main story knowing you need to grind A LOT to do a lot of the post game activities. I’d love to do them all eventually plus the multiplayer ones but I don’t think the time investment is all that worthwhile when I have so many other games I still have to play. Other than that I truly did have a blast playing this game & I’ve been hooked longer than most games can grab me for, one that made me genuinely excited to get home after a long day and play for hours to see what was next is a feeling I’ve seldom felt since I was a kid. It’s definitely better than any Pokémon game I’ve played since the Gen 5 games. I’m very excited for the future updates & what monsters they’ll bring (PLEASE GIVE ME ODOGARON!!!) and if anything this game just makes me wish I could get into the mainline series even more. Expand

Monster Hunter Stories 2's story and gameplay work in tandem to make this entry a standout in the franchise and in the creature collection genre as a whole. The gameplay is addictive, and the story and characters kept me invested in the finer details of the world. Plus, there is plenty to do after you've completed the story. If you're intrigued about this series or a fan who's wondering if it's worth your while, I say give this one a shot. And ride on! [Issue #54 – September 2021, p. 71]

Wings of Ruin’s strengths are easily noticeable and will keep you playing it for weeks. Its story may not be groundbreaking, but what it offers is crafted with love and is geared to both fans and newcomers to the series. It’s definitely not your average Monster Hunter game, but its mix of RPG and Pokemon-like elements make it its own kind of wonderful.

If you never loved the Monster Hunter series, yet you found yourself intrigued by it, this could be your moment to fall in love with its world. The original Stories was an easily overlooked game since it was exclusive to the 3DS. However, this sequel is not just more available, but also an amazing and charming title on its own. And players that don't mind the more simple stories will have nothing but love for this sweet little adventure, which is anything but tiny.
