    Monkey Barrels is the definition of a solid-but-safe top-down shooter. [Issue #45 – March/April 2020, p. 19]

Monkey Barrels is a solid game if you look for a fun, cartoony approach to shooters. There are some things that would be improved or polished but, overall, it’s an enjoyable experience.

Monkey Barrels is a great twin-stick shooter that perhaps plays it a little too safe at times. There's a fantastic selection of unlockable guns and grenades, with some providing excellent visual treats and strategic advantages, but the level design leaves a lot to be desired thanks to its repetitive nature. The unlockable multiplayer mode is a decent distraction that's fun for a while but ultimately lacks the same depth as the main story mode. There are stronger twin-stick shooters available on the Switch, but this is nevertheless a welcome addition.

Phenomenal top down twin stick shooter! Very challenging with LOTS of different weapons and gadgets! Very high quality. Long levels too lol.Phenomenal top down twin stick shooter! When you think you’re coming up to the end of a level you’ll find you’re actually just coming up to a checkpoint. Replayability through the roof. Full Review »

Fresh characters and design during first 1-2 hours playing, but it gets boring fast and changes to bullethell style suddenly. The main flawsFresh characters and design during first 1-2 hours playing, but it gets boring fast and changes to bullethell style suddenly. The main flaws are 1) difficulty rising too fast and some, like the high speed stalking enemies are just annoying. 2) you can get a lot of guns in the game, but they all miss the "powerful and fun to play feel" . 3) The enemy design feels fresh at start ... But be aware thats it - you seen it all already at the start, no new ideas coming later. tiny Cubes, big cubes, TV's that look like cubes nd more cube-robots all the way...if you havent thrown your Switch to the wall already since you just died another unfair highspeed cube-enemy.
