The design concept behind Mittelborg: City Of Mages seemed to have a lot of potential. One can forgive the non-engaging gameplay but any enjoyment is quickly hampered by frustrating control and a no-brains, overt advisory information approach. The game becomes less about skill and more about random chance.

There aren't many city building games on the Nintendo Switch, let alone with adventure elements. Unfortunately the way Mittelborg was executed leads to a sub-par effort. With controls that are difficult to get used to, a lack of touch-screen interaction, very little variety on what's happening during the gameplay and a poor translation and plot development, Mittelborg: City of Mages turns out to be a major disappointment after creating reasonable expectations.

Played almost entirely on one screen with clunky controls and game play which has you at the mercy of a random number generator, Mittleborg: City of Mages is quite a tedious game to play.

Mittelborg: City of Mages is a simplistic game with dull mechanics and no high stakes within the lackluster story.

The game has an intriguing premise and I want to believe the developers had some intelligent ideas behind what they're doing, but between the painfully shallow strategy, the laboured (via translation) writing, the mundane, uninspired presentation and the shonky interface and UX, there was nowhere left for me to go to find something I admired about this game. For story-driven roguelike strategy, I highly recommend Thea: The Awakening (also available on Switch). Mittelborg is a different game to it, but the energy and intent does cross over between the two. It's just that Thea is also made exceptionally well, and this is not.
