Midnight Evil is a game in the horror genre that almost anyone can play. The entire experience is set in a darkened bedroom in the dead of night, where the bumps and creaking really do mean you may not be alone.
Urklings. Strange goblin-like creatures that are small in stature, but large in creep factor. Throughout the night, time passes and these creature will attempt to infiltrate and presumably harm you. What you thought was a bedtime story becomes your lifeline in making these creatures go away for good.
While you don’t get the freedom to move about, you can change between reading the book, which is narrated by voiceover, and looking around the room. At the end of some sentences, there’s a chance a creature may be lurking nearby. Not too far into the book, you learn that looking at the creatures directly causes them to disappear.
The main objective is to finish the book, a quest which rewards the players with banishing the wicked Urklings for good. The Urklings have other plans, attempting to sneak up on and attack the player, causing a game over if left unchecked. Here in lies the struggle: how does one balance reading the book and spotting these little nasties before they get to you first?
When a certain amount of text is read it turns purple, giving a tell that it’s time to check for one of those ugly little buggers. They’re incredibly sneaky, hiding behind objects and sometimes traveling in pairs or small groups. You’ll never know which one is fastest, so even targeting the closest one isn’t always the best choice. Once you’ve banished them, you’ll need to go back to reading the book — but if you do get caught, it’s back to the last checkpoint in order to continue. While this sounds pretty annoying, it’s honestly fast-paced enough that it doesn’t hinder this short game.
Pros:
-A different horror experience
-Creative elements of surprise and jump scares.
Cons:
-Repetitive
-Short
Overall: 7/10
Midnight Evil is an anxiety-inducing play, and though the creatures are supposed to be scary, some of their actions while they attempt to outright murder you can be fairly comical. This would be a good buy for anyone that’s just dabbling In the horror genre, or someone that likes short adrenaline rush games. I can definitely see some potential for a speed run of this game, since the events seem to be sequential. The lack of variety in gameplay does impact our score some, but this is definitely worth checking out.… Expand
