Best 2D Metroid game I’ve ever played! So glad to see Mercury steam produce this masterpiece. Smoothest gameplay, controls and animations I’ve seen for a metroidvania. Emmi provide an interesting challenge and add to the overall atmosphere. Bosses are tough and rewarding.

Really good. Getting better as it goes on. I played the OG in '85, then Super Metroid, then zero mission and fusion on GBA, tried prime on the Wii but eh, 2D is where it's at for me, and this is pretty close to perfection. I am a long-time PC user, but I have to admit that this game is better than the entirety of PC gaming. I am confused because I thought PC was the master platform, yet I can't play it legally on PC on day one? Wtf? I have immediately sold my PC and bought a Switch, I have also burned my copy of Hollow Knight. The world is now a better place in general.

The entire game is extremely polished. The environments, the animations, the little touches, they're all there to the point where you could tell the developers really cared about making this game great, which they did. I feel like I should really emphasize the art style and the environments because they really pop and look incredible everywhere you go.

The gameplay is great. The abilities come at a nice clip, and there are a lot of them. And they do a great job of making you feel more powerful as you go. Combat is fun, and the bosses battles are amazing and fun. Yes they are hard. Yes you will die a lot. The great part about this game is that it lets you retry immediately. It's almost like a roguelike at times where you get better at a part by replaying it over and over. A boss or EMMI encounter that seems impossible at first suddenly becomes easy. It's definitely empowering. I never found the difficulty to be too much (I'm near endgame)

The only other thing I'd like to point out in closing is that Samus is totally badass in this game.

10/10 must play if you own a Switch.

Metroid Dread is probably one of the best Switch game released, and one of the best Metroid game after Prime and Super Metroid. Mercury Steam finally has perfected their own formula, started back with Samus Returns, and created a challenging game that will make you glued to your Switch. What more can I say? Just buy it.

10+ years later for me, and near enough 20 for long time fans, we finally get to see what happens next, and it doesn't disappoint. The setting of the game felt extremely atmospheric, the lore implications extremely interesting, and the game play felt absolutely amazing after an initial teething period.
I would also like to point out just how *detailed* the backgrounds to rooms are in this game. Metroidvania's are a type of game that will have many rooms, and they could of just gone the easy route and made them copy and pastes, but almost every single room from start to finish, felt unique.
The new abilities felt amazing to use, and Samus has never been faster, leading to some extremely tense and adrenaline fuelled boss fights.
I can't recommend this game enough, this was almost everything I've wanted in a Metroid game in the last 10 years.

MercurySteam has easily crafted their finest game to date, and created another worthy entry to the 2D Metroid saga. It's very clear to me that they over delivered. They created something that surpassed Yoshio Sakamoto's original vision (according to himself), exceeds the wildest dreams of every fan and puts the rest of the game industry to shame. This is without a doubt one of the most polished games ever made. It even surpasses all previous mainline Metroid games which were already perfect masterpieces. The graphics are gorgeous and it's unbelievable that this is running on a Nintendo Switch. The game reinvents the genre that Metroid originally created and elevates it to an unbelievably high standard. I was also pleasantly surprised that this game is moving forward and doesn't overuse nostalgia like Disney's new Star Wars movies. By keeping nostalgic moments rare, they actually have a very big impact when they happen in the story. Especially when the Theme of Samus Aran kicks in.

I've beaten this game twice now, once on normal with a 100% run, and once on hard beating it as fast as I could, and both times I had an absolute blast.

This gets the highest recommendation I can give it has a great narrative and the most fluid combat and traversal option I've played in a Metroidvania it's word is much more open than fusion and has the best bosses in the series 10/10 it's better than super Metroid

I have to say, I am stunned at the effort MS has put on an original title.
I seriously hope they keep doing more 2D Metroid titles, especially what they kept at the end. (Play the game to find out!)

This is without a doubt one of the best games I played this year.
It has a very nice atmosphere, the enormous map, excellent gameplay, sound and a great story. At first I thought the price was pretty high for 2D game, but after playing it, I felt it was a bargain.

Metroid's always taken a lot of inspiration from sci-fi and horror movies (Alien and The Thing especially), but here, it's clearly demonstrated that it's more than the sum of its parts. Even compared to the esteemed Super and Fusion, Dread raises the bar.

I'll keep it short to avoid spoilers, but the final boss being a 3 phase slapfight with no checkpoints, I was so bored of the first 2 phases by the time I finally cleared the fight I ended up studying the details of the skybox in the background as I mostly auto-piloted my way through. This isn't the early days of video games where you were lucky if you could get 3 things on screen without massive flicker, checkpoints are a concept and should be used, I shouldn't be bored on a boss fight. A lot.

There's no mercy. Only dread. One of the few games where the difficulty actually measures up to how the game talks about how dangerous things are.

The tension is real. It's not "cinematic tension" followed by some easy BS designed to look scary but be easy -- it's tense because it's *actually tense.*

And it's relentless. Nothing is handed to you. Everything is earned. It doesn't even ever tell you where to go except in broad sweeping generalization like "you need to work your way up toward your ship." And I *love* that about this game.

Yes, there are moments that are frustrating. But there's no un-dodgeable BS. Just stuff that you haven't figured out how to pay attention to yet, or moves that you're not utilizing enough yet.

And if you don't like difficult games, I'll just say this one's not for you. Don't darken it with your "it was too hard" whines. Go back to playing Super Mario Odyssey on Assist Mode.

This game is tough, but never once felt unbeatable to me. Even with my generally sub-par mechanics I was always able to slow down, retry the encounter, and find the pattern needed to win. Often I found that my faults were in impatience, that I acted too quickly rather than having been too slow. That patience and finding the rhythm to any boss fight is key for this kind of game, and that's a good thing. There are moments that will be tough, but there's always something you can learn to get through it.

This game mixed the eerie solitary feeling of older titles, Metroid Fusion's partly guided path and all around better story, and some modern flair to bring a new touch of action to the series without sacrificing what makes Metroid, Metroid. I particularly enjoyed the story, which I won't dive into so as to remain spoiler free. Overall Dread leaves some of the series most awesome moments and obviously the best graphics the series has seen.

It's not without flaws, the game is more linear than predecessors and didn't leave as much time as I'd like to explore for powerups, but I don't feel it significantly reduced my enjoyment in the end.

I will try to keep it brief but also include some game analysis stuff in here. I've played all the 2D Metroid games except for 2. And I can confidently say that this is easily my favourite Metroid game and also among my favourite games of all time.

The difficulty is my favourite part of this game as it's so refreshing to play something that really tests your skills. The past Metroid games weren't that difficult as I never even died in Super and Zero Mission. Fusion was actually slightly hard but I managed. With this game though? I died to Kraid a lot until I got better. And that's the best part, you die until you get better at playing the game and better understand the attack patterns. It was a triumph when I got past a boss. In an era where games are so easy, this game is really refreshing.

The environments are really great in this game. I found that the graphics and how it's 3D add so much to the atmosphere you feel when going through the map. Burenia and Ghavron were magical when I stepped foot into them. I think this game also does an incredible job of subtly telling the story throughout the game by utilizing the 3D backgrounds. There were a lot of mysterious things and objects you could find when looking into the backgrounds. I would expect this game to pull it off better than the past games as the past games have pretty basic backgrounds. Also, this game uses original locations where as Super and Zero mission kept using Brinstar and other various locations like that. And one last point, Burenia gave me a very "liminal" feeling which was incredible as Super gave that same feeling when I went through the wrecked ship.

The singlehandedly best part about this game is the scope they reached. The past Metroid games feel a lot more basic compared to this entry as the rooms were smaller, and the boss fights weren't nearly as involved. This game really captures the adventure aspect the best out of the series by simply offering way more depth to the maps and abilities.

This game is a masterpiece through and through, and despite other metroidvanias existing, I think this game offers a grander experience compared to other games in the genre. It really earned its best adventure award at TGA.

Absolutely loved this game. Atmosphere, movement, combat were just about everything I had hoped for in a modern Metroid game, especially after Samus returns on the 3ds. I'll admit there were several places/puzzles I got stuck on, but I still enjoyed my time roaming around. When you are familiar with the subversive hidden blocks from previous games they almost become obvious in this game. And to be fair, the designers explicitly tell you to bomb and shoot everything when you're stuck, often incentivizing you with pickups just on the other side of a wall. The smooth movement and teleportation rooms really speed up the navigation, so I really don't understand why 'backtracking' is such a dirty word in this context. It should be a joy to go back through a previous world so powered up and smash through it.

Do I with some of the textures were higher resolution? Sure. But would I prefer that over 60fps or fast load times? Absolutely not. There is so much going on with the backgrounds, lighting, and particle effects it's still a gorgeous game.

Not much of the music is memorable outside of the game, like you're not going to be humming it all day. But it fits the areas and their mood perfectly, and songs great on the tv or handheld. Songs effects are awesome, though the new item pickup jingle is a bit... 70s synth? Idk...

Samus is a badass again, I'll take it.

La historia cierra de manera épica, y aporta todos los detalles para el arco argumental. Es un juego ÉPICO. Expand

Wow! Just Wow! This game is absolutely amazing. Firstly it looks sumptuous with its beautiful and mesmerizing 2.5D graphics. The audio is also top class, projecting the feel of being alone perfectly.

However most importantly the gameplay is close to perfect. Controls are tight and the buttons are well mapped so that it becomes second nature to pull off any of the actions required. The

However most importantly the gameplay is close to perfect. Controls are tight and the buttons are well mapped so that it becomes second nature to pull off any of the actions required. The story is the same old "Samus has lost all her weapons" deal (She really should be more careful...) , but this is of little consequence as the rest of the storyline is great. The normal grinding mechanic is punctuated by regular spurts of genuine panic as the E.M.M.I. sees you and starts its chase.

In my opinion this is the best 2D Metroid game so far and not only that but probably one of the best games of 2021 so far.

One thing to note is that if you have grown up on overly easy games then this game will be a shock to the system. However if you like challenge rather being told you are great all the time then you will love it.

Really good game, lots of upgrades and lore to be had here, especially for the hardcore Metroid fans like myself.

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
