This is The BEST Metroid game in franchise history. Totally must have.

    BESTs:
    1. Level design
    2. Graphics and framerate.
    3. Story and lore.
    4. Emmi's
    5. Difficulty
    6. The last Boss.

Really that's in a short but in my opinion this could be a better game than Zelda BOTW.

I've beaten it on normal, hard, and dread mode. Super tight and responsive controls, great visuals, and a frenetic gameplay pace is what defines this game. It is true that the game can be beaten in under 4 hours (in fact, the developers expect you to do so) but that is actually a good thing. With the multitude of open world grind fests and fetch quests, the fast paced game play is refreshing and makes the game highly repayable. Music isnt great - for example, the music in metroid prime is iconic; in dread, its a bit understated and forgettable. EMMI sections can be both tense (at first) and tedious, but they are short and forgiving checkpoints make them palatable. Boss rush mode just makes the game better. A genuinely enjoyable experience and worth multiple playthroughs Expand

A dense, tough as nails game. I was surprised as this is the sort of difficulty I’ve come to expect from indie studios, rather than the established ones. It is rather short and linear as recent Metroidvania goes, which is fine considering how intense the game is.

Speaking ofI want to start out this review with a bit of a warning; this game is hard. That said, I never felt frustrated during my playthrough of this game. The difficulty is fair and fun, and that is coming from someone who doesn't usually enjoy playing difficult games. When you die on a boss for the third time in a row, it doesn't feel demotivating, it encourages you to try again. Speaking of difficulty, the main premise of this game is the E.M.M.I. Zones. In these sections, you are stalked by rogue robots that want nothing more than to kill you and extract your DNA. You pass through these zones quite often, and every time it fills you with a sense of dread (in a good way), hence the name Metroid Dread. From the way they move to the ominous beeps they make, they are easily the scariest part of the game. Did I mention they can hear you? Nowhere is safe when you are in an E.M.M.I. Zone. Although these areas are a central part of the game, you won't spend all of your time there, as a majority of the game takes place outside these zones, with them acting as a hazard you must travel through to reach certain areas. Moving on to the rest of the game, for the first half of the game, everything is shrouded in mystery. As you traverse the vast, underground facility, you uncover many strange things, some of which are never explained. It isn't until later in the game when the story really begins. Even then, the game starts out by giving you bits and pieces of the story, leaving it up you to figure out what is going on. The controls are great, although they take a little bit of getting used to. Samus unlocks tons of unique abilities throughout the game, but it doesn't feel like a fetch quest like it does in some other Metroid games. I would recommend using a guide as little as possible, as a large part of the fun in this game is exploring and finding things on your own. All in all, I would say this is the best Metroid game that I have played (Although the only ones I have played are Prime, Fusion, and Super). If you have never played a Metroid game before, this is a great one to start with, and if you are already a fan of Metroid, then you will surely love this game. I hope this review was helpful to at least one person. Expand

Incredible game, best since Super Metroid maybe even slightly better. Metroid Returns was just a warmup act, this is the main attraction. Best in show graphics, music, gameplay, and map of the Switch (excluding the current era of Zelda perhaps). Does a far stronger job of establishing character than all of the cutscenes Metroid Other M.

    Pros
    Tight controls
    Great theme
    Satisfying playstyle

    Cons
Camouflaged blocks inhibit early progress in story
    A hidden move mechanic

I got stuck a couple times in the early game because it felt like a Mario boo house. When you’re stuck, shoot at the wall! The game says. Didn’t like that. It’s formulaic enough though to where you can learn what to expect, but still...Also, the developers put a lot of enhancements (though not required to beat the game) behind a complicated move mechanic that isn’t even mentioned in the game. And, to add insult to injury, they put that mechanic on the most breakable part of the joy-con. It was stressful to use the technique, fail, and try again a dozen times because I was worried I was harming the controller.

While the music doesn’t detract from the theme, it doesn’t carry much weight. Thankfully, the rainbow robots (why all the colors though?) pulled through. The E.M.M.I. put the dread in Dread. It was fun and satisfying to sneak around them until you could finally take them out. This is a very well made game because once you get some momentum, the game is really fun.

The items didn’t really add anything new to the game, but boss fights were fun enough to where I found myself mashing to shoot as fast as I could. The game looks fantastic and the controls are very satisfying to pull off. There are quality of life features too like the map marking where you found, but couldn’t reach, areas and or enhancements. Loading screens were put in spots that didn’t interrupt the immersion of the game. It’s a short game costing $60, but it gave me something that most Nintendo games don’t offer an adult: a challenge.

In summary, I don’t like games with guns. I don’t like platformers. I don’t like horror themes. But I like Metroid Dread and have no regrets.

If you had money and were patronized by Nintendo in every way there is no chance that you are going to create a masterpiece. This is just an over-hyped piece of trash, even with Chozo they cant hold up to Japanese development roots. And also Nintendo being outsourced their franchise to 3rd party. By doing so they completely neglect the fanbase... after Metroid Fusion it was over. AM2R was a good remake, long enough and beautiful enough. if Nintendo had only could see their potential, they were one those who be able to recreate the perfect Metroid 2.5 d remake of M SR. It's a shame but I think Nintendo became something like Konami, too much power too much money too much risks.
OH, here are some facts the spanish guys who made this game rely on post-modern their destroyed canon of Metroid. Metroid was a good game (DREAD,OTHERM,MSR,FFORCE not included) and its system was very rewarding, you get an upgrade after a really long detour to get it. First, it was a puzzle to find them! Before the puzzle however you have encountered a foe to defeat, and the pace in-game was right and the item was very close to the foe's location, it was challenging and rewarding. But now it's not. Also, do you remember how the staff who made Metroid fusion rely on the changes in the landscape in the game, you know I am not saying there ain't happening in dread, but it's different in a lousy way! Emmi sequences get very repetitive and after a while, you get used to it and it's getting boring. That's my facts. and the difficulty was above normal so you didn't see a lack of details there aren't put in the game, and the puzzles were still solely for this reason. mic drop. welcome to the new age of gaming, they feeding you the wrong retro product!

    P.S.
I AM PRAYING FOR RETRO DON"T LET US DOWN TRY TO BRING BACK ANDROID JONES ONCE MORE SHOW CHOZO HOW THEY SHOULD BE LIKE HOLY AND TRANSCENDENT, with NO HORIZONTAL EYE LINE. Give em proper design!.

    P.P.S
PARDON MY FRENCH but 10/10 reviewers have reminded me of a simp who gets to touch **** for 60 bucks for the first time. Or Gollum who gets corrupted by the ring.

And last but not least i think Yokoi Gunpei san doing shinespark in his grave, bless his soul, you should be ashamed mr Sakamoto! For the last time gather R&D1 and stop outsourcing my beloved franchise. Alien FS is already fallen but Metroid one could take a more interesting route once more! Try to Tell a story from a different point of view, change it get deeper be more thoughtful Metroid always was a more than a game it was mystical experience not emotional rollercoster or speedrun feature was just a addition to alien landscapes and deep narrated "show don't tell" stylized story!

The EMMI robot sections are awful. Like the worst stealth sections you've ever encountered x6. There are some great boss fights in Metroid: Dread that are dances of death like Hollow Knight, but then there are a lot of gimmicky boss fights that depend on using a grappling hook to hop around, or hit some weak spot. Overall, this game is still a lot of fun, and a fine addition to the Metroid series.

its not as if Metroid is out of ideas, its just getting very good at reincorporating the same old ones to suit a narrative that is frankly just getting more embarrassing as time goes by and each subsequent post-Other-M title comes out. Asits not as if Metroid is out of ideas, its just getting very good at reincorporating the same old ones to suit a narrative that is frankly just getting more embarrassing as time goes by and each subsequent post-Other-M title comes out. Is Samus just a legacy character now? Was their really enough there after all these years to continue writing a plot for her in these action games? As convoluted as most, if not all of them are, I'd dare say it may be time to let this character retire. Gone are the days of merry, even carefree adventuring with occasional puzzle elements like the Metroid Prime games, instead we get an actual action game based more off the weird pseudo-remake of Metroid 2 from the original Gameboy.

The Gameboy, in all its black and white glory was incredibly limited, but at the time they made do with what they had. It turns out, some of the simplest elements from the Metroid II - Return of Samus original stick out in my mind a whole lot more than the things they added to elongate a rather short affair in the remake on the Nintendo DS. Color is always a good addition, but some of the other things are kind of irritating. Manually aiming is cool, but finicky and the original control scheme going back to the Gameboy Advance series was intuitive enough. Desiring more complexity for no reason isn't exactly the best goal for a Metroid title when so much that works for the series is KISS. Keep it simple, stupid.

Metroid Dread, sounding more like a black metal band than a proper sequel to any Metroid game in general, is one of the more bizarre and genuinely bland experiences I've had with the series. From the opening cutscene I think something got lost in translation, because nobody has been playing the Metroid Fusion timeline nor was anyone particularly attached to that timeline either. In short, the intro is terrible and makes the Galaxy that Samus roams rather small and inconsequential. Everything is Chozo now. Everything is connected to metroid or metroid DNA or metroid this and metroid that. Its silly, its been done to death. Its just recycling older and better ideas to cram into your tired narrative, as mentioned above.

The game play is tedious. I have no other real word for it. I suppose if you were really hoping that Samus Aran would become Megaman overnight, then I guess you got your wish, but I don't like Megaman games. I kind of enjoyed that Super Metroid game on the Super Nintendo. Having all of these new features slapped onto Mrs. Metroid's move-set is exhausting. Mostly due to the fact that the analog stick is required for everything now, which is so foreign of a concept to me in a Metroid game that I just still can't understand why its so necessary. The parrying is silly, the power ups all end up being the same or with a slight twist, but they are only exclusive to this one game, and will I'm sure strangely disappear when the next sequel comes out.

Lets talk about the bots. No, I don't mean the bots on metacritic, I mean the robot adversaries in this game that are copy-pasted with all of your abilities that all have to be beaten the exact same way, and all feature the same gameplay loop up until the end of the game. The EMMI or EMMI'S, are the same robot thing that pursue Samus in order to give you a big hug and then want to either inject you with something or steal your virginity. Its tough to tell because the screen fades to black. You can QTE them away, but the timing window to stop them and escape is rather short. These are flat out the most boring element about this game. its actually kind of sad that this was the best they could come up with while recycling boss encounters from even older games for no real reason.

As far as I'm concerned, this game ends on the most ridiculous premise ever. Samus is now some sort of Jesus figure with the blood of the metroids or something blah, blah, blah. Its garbage. This series is over. What else can you even do now besides remake the older games?

No wonder I skipped a lot of things in this game, just to get it over with quicker. Battles with bosses are also nothing interesting. I don't understand why fans love this game, they probably just haven't played other games. Expand

Over the last decades, the metroidvania genre has come a long way. Especially from the indie scene, we've got many great entries.

Metroid Dread feels like a time capsule due to its traditional design choices for better and worse. It is always encouraged to expect investment of the player like old games did, but the game is also littered with mechanics that you would not expect from a game released in 2021.

Here are some examples. The controls expect you to hold 3 buttons, just to fire a rocket, while one would have sufficed, boss difficulty is artificially raised by sponginess and quick time events are back, even necessary to beat nearly every boss. A lot of the bosses are repeated up to 6 times.

These choices would be fine years ago, but due to fantastic examples like Hollow Knight or Ori and the Will of the Wisps, one knows that the metroidvania genre has come a long way and can do better. A comparison: In Metroid Dread and Hollow Knight, you are given a kind of super-jump in the game. It Hollow Knight you cling to a wall, hold a button and perform this jump. In Metroid Dread, you have to click your stick, run a bit, press down, then B, then the direction while holding B, and then you perform the jump.

Why this artificial complexity? For a game, that advertises its tight controls, this feels unlike Nintendo, who usually simplify things, which take other games three sub-menus to explain.

Of course, I pre-ordered Metroid Dread immediately when it was possible. I enjoyed playing this game to the max. Music, location and gameplay again create a powerful reverberation that will probably provide a sugar-sweet aftertaste for life.
Unfortunately, the final boss is way over it, dear developers. The whole game has wonderfully delicately increasing challenges and then comes the final boss, who almost scratches the edge of unfairness and causes me far too much stress. I can't defeat it either. I bought the game at release and after a few days I was in front of the final boss. In the meantime, I've been trying to get this over with with easily five hundred plus attempts in over a year without success. Sorry dear developers, this is not well done! It would be nice if I could change the combat to "easy", but then I have to play the whole game again! I will probably never buy another Metroid game from this developer. Gaming should be fun, not frustrating!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't remember the last time I played a game with such a ridiculously complex and unintuitive controls. I'm spending the majority of the time trying to remember which button combination I need to press, rather than enjoying the game world. it's incredibly furstrating, a mess of cussing and frayed temper. not satisfying at all. the level design is bad. the entire map is a mess, with not much in the way of recognisable areas that would be familiar when you look at the map. you spend most of the time lost, with arbitrary roadblocks shoved in your way for no discernible reason. the suit design is nonsense, with 'lights' behaving like painted lines and meandering all over her body without rhyme or reason. puzzle design is inconsistent. for example, the game tells you specifically that your scan ability will show you blocks that you can break with your abilities, HOWEVER there is a wall that can be destroyed by power bombs that is not marked in any way. just one example. the narrative is disjointed and nonsensical. there is ample opportunity for various concepts and character history to be dripfed to us so we are reminded of context of the situation, instead it feels like the end is one massive context dump and shock reveal all in one. the game just expects you to accept all this stuff seemingly out of the blue.
lastly, when did they decide to blow up a planet, and how exactly did they physically do that?

also, whoever came up with the idea of QTE as a major required game mechanic, fire them. that trash gimmick does not belong in a metroid style game.

The perfect sequel to all the previous 2d Metroid games. The movement and combat are slick and one of the best in any 2d game, the bosses are the best in the series and it truly modernizes the formula in a fantastic way. The weakest point is probably the music which is a shame but other than that it is just awesome.

It's very atmospheric, the art, sound and music are authentic and immersive, if you want a real challange like hollow knight but more streamlined and elegant this is a great game. Metroid is an important franchise because like Mario and Zelda it has a very unique formula which no other game can emmulate or has succesfully emulated, and like those games it takes its game design seriously, maximising entertainment and treating the level design as more of an art form than just a space for the game to exist in, like it has been specifically designed for you.

If you want that feeling helplessness, danger and isolation and of being all alone while surviving the dangers of an Alien planet this is for you. Absoloutely incredible game design, it's Metroid.

This doesn't feel like a Metroid game at all. If this had a different name, you'd think it was a budget, mediocre, indie game. All I've experienced so far is ugly graphics that all look the same, linear gameplay where you keep getting blocked from going back where you came from, and stupid robot chases.
Constantly running away from an invincible enemy is not fun. It's just annoying and ruins the best part about Metroid: exploration. What a flop.

Good thing I only bought a demo for this mess. I was really looking forward to this game, and I bought a demo to make sure I was ready. But boy was I wrong…

The intro makes NO SENSE AT ALL. So, Samus basically gets word that the x-parasites (from fusion) are on a new planet she probably never heard of and found on complete accident. There are also some robots that they’re using to kill the x-parasites? Couldn’t the maker of the Robots just notify Samus that they’ve got the situation under control? The robots stop working ( because the game would’ve been over before it began if that wasn’t the case), so Samus ( with a hideous close up on her face to boot) beams down to the planet And encounters this Bird who drains all her power and turns her armor blue? WHAT!?

The Combat in this is so boring and simple it’s not even funny. The way you kill every single enemy in this is to shoot them with your laser, that’s it. There’s this punch you can do to randomly instakill an enemy, which is actually a bit cool. Maybe there should’ve been some enemies that can only be damaged by that. But nope! Every enemy in this game can be considered palette swaps since they all die the same way.

The only reason this is not a 0 is because the EMMI chases are actually quite fun. They’re big mazes that you have to get out of to defeat the EMMI, but you have to make sure the EMMI doesn’t catch you and trigger the game over screen. It’s a blast of adrenaline and challenge to an otherwise easy and boring game. If there was a game based entirely off this alone, I’d give it a solid 9 out of 10.

But alas, the game itself is just tedious and I cannot imagine shelling out 60 bucks for this. Nintendo should fire mercury steam for ruining the Metroid IP. “Metroid Dread”? More like, “Metroid, I Dread what your next installment is if this is the direction you’re going”!

It is a Metroidvania game at its core. What did you expect? It made the genre (well, half of it anyway). And it has aged well. It is a lot of fun to play. At the start it can feel frustrating because you can’t go anywhere, but there is a serious sense of progression and it is very satisfying to find something new. I have to say that the controls are crispy clean, and I personally wouldn’t change them. Its difficulty is the main thing people talk about with this game. It is the first Nintendo game in a long time with perfect difficulty. Some of the bosses were really hard to figure out, but you just have to keep trying, and it’ll get easier. But I still died 200 times. The E.m.m.i.s didn’t help as they provide chase sections which are easy to slip up on, but as long as you stay calm you should be fine during them. In the start of the game they are everywhere, but later you don’t have to worry about them a ton. The game guides you along a little bit, so you shouldn’t be terribly lost. The gameplay is 9/10. It's sometimes pretty hard to find what to do next, but I still love the gameplay.

The story is that Samus (or Metroid if you know literally nothing) crashlanded on an alien planet called ZDR. Prior story knowledge is required, but you get a quick recap when you open up a save file. I won’t go into further detail because it is quite a good story.

It looks very nice, as far as an alien planet goes. One of the locations is an underground jungle, and it looks gorgeous. I don’t like how there’s just blackness beyond the platforms, but I get why they did it and I don’t know what to put there myself. The music isn’t amazing. However it fits the environment very well, and it didn’t matter a ton.
The presentation is an 10/10. It's memorable, and gorgeous.

It has a pretty good main campaign taking 15 hours to beat. You can go for a 100% which would probably take 30 hours. It is also very replayable. But post-story, you get a boss rush mode and some bonus difficulties. This isn’t the kind of game you play for 50 hours, though. The content is a 9/10. Personally I wouldn't play it forever, but that's just me.

Some people say, ”Is it worth $60?” I can gladly say it is, and it is a very good purchase. If you aren’t invested in games then I wouldn’t buy it, but if you are looking for something to play for a while then definitely check out Metroid Dread.

Great level designs and awesome boss battles. Levels are structured in such a way that we are directed directly to the power and back to unlock the new path. The map is such a complicated maze but handled in awesome way that we get a sense of accomplishment each time we find the correct way.

The Metroid series officially, and finally, advances forward with a new main entry that builds on its entire history and then some! The story is subtle but tastefully visualized, the controls are extremely smooth, the visual design is a dream, and the bosses, while not letting up on the challenge, are so satisfying to finish.

It’s a great game but toward the end I began to feel demoralized and overwhelmed by the sheer amount of controls to use and power ups. The traversal is amazing. The soundtrack is atmospheric and set the mood well. The movement and power up noises are quality and even has voice acting. The cutscenes are beautiful. The graphics are amazing and really push the switch to the max. Some of the game felt a little padded. It took me 15 hours to complete and I think they could have trimmed a few of the power ups and zones to be a little smaller. It’s definitely longer than I was expecting. Overall this game is an amazing Metroid game that is a little more action oriented with stealth as a gimmick and the bosses as the standout development. Play this game. Expand

Metroid Dread was one of the reasons I bought the console. This game is beautiful, it has great mechanis that make you enjoy the controls and has also a nice atmosphere. But sadly, this game has only that!
The game has an awful development and no story at all. It forces you to jump between places just to look for power ups in order to move forward. You don't care about what is going on.

They created a 3h main story, made it complicated with "difficult" fights ( EMMIs and more ), created a chaos in the maps with the power ups, made it hard to move from one place to the other on the same territory..... I played 10-11 hours and I felt I threw 8 of them. It was not a fun experience and I found myself feeling obliged to finish this just because I bought it. When I realized that I quitted it. Its beauty can't save the bad implementation.

This game gets a lot right but ultimately can’t decide what it should be and tries to do everything at once. The overall arc remains the same as Super Metroid, but so much is thrown at the wall: the new EMMI sections are repetitive and gimmicky like the Batmobile in Arkham Knight, the parry-based combat tries to ape Dark Souls but slows the exploration to a crawl, and the map is so complex and bitty that power-ups unlock inches rather than miles. It’s not a bad game and there are some great moments, especially some of the bosses. But finicky controls and quick-time parries make this a frustrating, flawed experience. Expand

Mercury Steam and Nintendo had already crafted an excellent 'return' with the 3DS remake of The Return Of Samus, but this game is leagues above and shows off the true talent of the developers. It's masterfully designed, certainly more linear than some other games in the series, but not without some excellent sequence breaks and branching paths. The visuals are gorgeous and immersive; the story is a great conclusion which retro-actively adds more details to the lore and leaves us hanging for more; the gameplay is SMOOTH, better than anything before in the series; the music is great, despite what most people seem to think. If you haven't bough this game yet, do yourself a favour and try the free demo. Metroid is not for everyone, especially not for casual players, but the game guides you well throughout the planet. This is my favourite game in the entire franchise and my 2nd favourite game on the Switch. Expand

Despite being a fan of Metroidvanias, this was the first actual Metroid game I have played (I have played many of the Castlevania series games). So, what do you know? I like the genre, so I liked this game a lot. Really fun to play with nice visuals. I used my turbo button sometimes, but overall, the game was fun and a decent challenge.

This game is **** perfect. I played Zero Mission afterwards and I plan playing the Metroid Prime trilogy. This game made me a Metroid fan.
It's not too easy and not too difficult and if you disagree, you can just switch to another difficulty.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Love this game. It’s level design is superb and it is the only game that I’ve replayed immediately after initially beating it. Only flaw I find with it is that the only way to usually go is forward. There were moments in which I was very happy to get a power up because I could access an area I remember not being able to, but then realize I can’t go back there yet because it is now blocked off. Apart from that, I believe this to be the best game I’ve played of the last 5 years and I hope Nintendo keeps supporting this franchise. Expand

After almost 20 years we finally have a sequel to the 2D series of Metroid games! Considering that, Dread does a great job of combining the new modern combat with the old elements of research and advancement, and it doesn't hurt that we have some of the best boss fights in the series. A true gem and a must have for all Switch gamers.

Taking up the torch of a series interrupted nineteen years ago is never an easy task, but the MercurySteam studio is doing it with honors! The developers have chosen the path of security while perfectly respecting the spirit of the previous episodes, to the detriment of true modernity.
