Probably the laziest "Nintendo" and "Mario" branded product I've ever bought. The gameplay is extremely bland and dull, with the only factor of depth being a rather stupid gimmick where you move the ball in the air in various stages, and this gimmick isn't even available for all the characters at the start of the game. In its current state (no updates released yet), I would say it's at the "shareware" level. If this game had been given away for free to NSO users it might have been acceptable, but as a $60 product it's just a joke. Nothing in the game looks complete. The feeling of playing is the same as experiencing a bug-free tech demo.

This is one of those games that is so incomplete for the price that it sounds like an insult. It's as if the seller has no respect for the customer. I'm surprised Nintendo considered a game that wouldn't even qualify for a mid-tier mobile game to be released for $60 for the main console. This game is so incomplete, so barebones, that it alone made me lose all confidence in Nintendo-licensed games. I hope more players will follow my "example" and not buy anything else from Nintendo until they start releasing full games again.

Not being able to tell ifyou are going to hit something is a problem they should fix. The special shots aren't very fun, they're mostly just for exploiting the computer or angering your friends. I would recommend you use "play all at once", and not use motion controls.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mario Golf: Super Rush is... I dunno how to explain it. I wish the game had more to offer. All you get is local multiplayer, online multiplayer, and campaign. The campaign is kinda easy and it takes no time at all and you don't get much customization for your character, plus it doesn't have a ton to offer. Even though I kinda liked it I know other players won't like it as much. Online multiplayer isn't difficult and it's just playing golf against others. Local can be fun with family and friends but other than that, kinda gets old. The character selection screen has an okay amount of characters but I wish there was more. Also I wish they made the putting more realistic. No matter what power you're putting at, it basically always goes in the hole because of the pole. I know it's most likely there to help players out, but I kinda wish it wasn't there for more of a challenge. Overall Mario Golf: Super Rush is Ok and it lacks some stuff. Expand

Gone are the ring shots modes, cup tournaments, challenges, best badges/birdie badges and star characters. None of the game modes are interesting and are very boring and basic. The graphics are pretty bad for the Switch (especially Shelltop Sanctuary golf course, it's awful). The characters only have one animation for a good or bad outcome when winning/losing a hole and it's very lazily done compared to the previous entries which had very flashy animations. The only thing good I have to say about the characters is that they have pretty good golfing outfits (save for a few like Yoshi and DK who don't have any).

If this game was 20$ or cheaper I would have gave this 7 or more but the fact it's a 60$ full game price is why it's a problem, it's like Nintendo doesn't simply doesn't care if they're ripping their off customers and simply charging that amount of money for being a Nintendo product. The seal of quality once used by the company has completely lost it's meaning. Play the previous golf entries or spend your money on another actually good Switch game.

With that said, the core golfing is generally quite good, and has sufficient depth to be engaging without alienating casual players.

The single-player campaign included in Mario Golf: Super Rush, while enjoyable, certainly doesn't live up to it's potential and is quite uneven. The difficulty curve is strangely implemented, certain challenges can feel insurmountable, while others require very little effort. The mode features a variety of different hub areas, but there isn't much reason for them to exist as there's no meaningful interactions or gameplay that takes place in them. There are a few boss fights included, and while these are pretty fun, they're for some reason all jammed together at the end of the game instead of being peppered throughout the duration of the experience. The story itself has a bit of promise at the start, but meanders and sputters out without any real memorable events having taken place. The mode at the very least does serve as a decent enough tutorial, but beyond that there isn't much to say about it.

The multiplayer is certainly the main course here, and includes enough locales and characters to feel like a full experience. I really enjoy the new Speed Golf mode, running through courses as the different characters is quite a nice change of pace from the more plodding pace of the standard golf. Online works fairly well, though it certainly isn't the smoothest experience around, with local play functioning quite well and providing sufficient customizability.

Music and visuals are functional but not exactly exciting. The game does look quite nice at times, but never really reaches the heights of Nintendo's main series Mario titles. The music is fairly generic, but is energetic enough and doesn't detract from the experience much.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is a casual friendly golf title that I enjoyed my time with, though I do recognize a general lack of polish that really shouldn't be present in a Nintendo published Mario game.

Mario Golf World Tour was one of my most-played games on my 3DS (competing with the likes of Animal Crossing New Leaf and the Picross games.) When I bought a Switch on launch day, I was already looking forward to this game.

Three years later, it finally comes out... and it's pathetically unfinished and uninspired. There is no joy nor excitement anywhere to be found. The course designers made nearly no effort to make these areas visually belong in the Mario universe, and they don't even look particularly good at all. Engagement comes in the form of "hit your ball into this cyclone to get up the cliffside" and that's about it. Oh, and you can collect coins as you run to where your ball landed, if you want -- they're nigh-pointless, as is the running to the ball itself. This was marketed as a core feature of the game leading up to release, and it's pathetically boring.

The main mode of the game forces you to play through the course as a noisy, annoying Mii character -- using Mario or any of the other characters is not an option. The golf mechanics are both overly simplistic and unrealistic, allowing you to freely bend shots back and forth in midair, with complete disregard for club choice.

There is basically nothing to unlock or obtain in the game. All included characters have one costume, and it's the one they're already wearing. You can obtain "stronger clubs" which just changes some internal numbers, and each character has a "special shot" which was almost never useful at all in my 30-or-so hours of gameplay.

There's a cutscene halfway through the "story mode" which has you hit a golf ball really hard into a makeshift dam of rocks blocking a river, which destroys the dam and unlocks the next course. The cheesiness of the whole situation, combined with the poor, uninspired graphical presentation, really act as a cornerstone for my feelings about this game. This is as involved as the game gets, right here.

2 stars because the splash screen (the artwork from the cover) looks really great as the game is loading. Then, the actual game loads, and reality sets in. I really should've fought for a refund; I bought this digitally when it came out, and haven't even thought of playing it past the first week. This is the same developer responsible for the excellent Mario Golf World Tour on 3DS and Everybody's Golf on PlayStation 4. How & why is this game so bad?

What made this game appealing to me prior to acquiring it was the idea of revisiting playing the old Nintendo 64 version of Mario Golf and seeing what has changed from my high school days.

Well, as it turns out, a lot has changed.

For one, the mechanics of the game are as smooth as the graphics. You expect that when it comes to a Nintendo console that's a few generations ahead of the vintage 64. Yes, there’s something therapeutic watching your ball sail a long way in the real world; the same thing applies when you play this game, you're left to marvel watching the ball glide seamlessly in the virtual world.

In addition, the variation of characters to choose from is quite refreshing as it gives you the option of picking the classicals such as Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser, as well as some of the more obscure characters such as Pauline from the original Donkey Kong games, Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy and Chargin’ Chuck from... I guess... Super Mario ESPN?

The pleasant thing about the courses to choose from is that they have their own unique quirk to bring to the table. Bonny Greens is generic, but also great to grasp the basic concepts of golf if you’re new, but other courses bring tougher obstacles which require ace maneuvering if you’re to beat your competition.

Pleasantly, this game offers advice about how to play your shots and includes all of the golf lingo that you'll probably hear the commentators murmur whilst you've got The Masters on in the background of your online shopping.

If you’re not a traditionalist such as myself, you can be a little more adventurous with how you choose to play golf, you can play speed golf which requires a lot more focus and precision to not only stuff up your shots, but to get your ball to the hole as quick as you can.

In addition, there is battle golf, where you compete with others to be the first player to nail three holes out of nine the quickest, it becomes very intense very quickly against family or friends and it can only spell a great time or the potential for your father to disown you in a similar fashion you would play Monopoly.

The game’s story mode is a must if you want to unlock the courses that aren’t downloadable content. It’s very addictive in the sense that you build your Mii character and then get your creation to work on the art of golfing , adding up all of the stats to how you see fit and learning all the tricks you need to master this generation's Mario Golf along the way.

It's fun to play and experience the new courses as you progress. However, the story gets more complex than hit the ball less than your opponent and beat the clock to progress to the next course as the game progresses, but I’ll leave that there in danger of spoiling the entire plot of the story.

All in all, this is a game that even the most casual of golf fans and Mario fans alike can pick up and gel with quite easily.

There could be extra characters, courses and maybe other intangibles (why super backspin, but no super topspin?) but for what it’s worth, it’s a game that has delivered a very solid drive and has landed smack bang on the putting green.

There was hardly anything to unlock like Characters via Matchplay or gaining points by doing Tournaments to unlock new course. We don't have Ring shot or Minigolf as well. Sure I'm glad we also didn't get Slot Golf but I would hardly call this a game whatsoever. This is just another example of how Nintendo fails to make a good game for not taking it serious enough because it isn't a mobile money machine.
Further WHY THE HECK MAKE BALL CONTROL RANDOM NOW? in older installments you had to have some kind of skill to make sure the Ball fly's straight and where you want it to land but noooooo this time it has to be random, prolly to better appease casual players but even back then, all you had to do is time you button press well to get the optimal control what's so hard about that that casual players need to be pampered with randomness to not be overwhelmed. This game could have been good but with such a development failure of course it will sell even worse once word got out and puts in the final nail in the coffin for this "unrentable" franchise. If your a company that long on the market you should feel an obligation to maintain your franchises good standing for at least every "Generation" your on the market, even if it isn't the big selling product but for keeping a positive image and to have continues relevance. There is always a smaller but passionate market that you shouldn't sour your relation towards.
